There is growing evidence that poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure leads to the disruption of thyroid hormones including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), and may affect telomeres, repetitive nucleotide sequences which protect chromosome ends. Many seabird species are long-lived top predators thus exhibit high contaminant levels, and PFAS-disrupting effects on their physiology have been documented especially in relation to the endocrine system in adults. On the contrary, studies on the developmental period (i.e., chicks), during which exposure to environmental contaminants may have a greater impact on physiological traits, remain scarce to this date. We carried out a multi-species study with the aim to assess whether and to which extent chicks of four gull species (herring gull, great and lesser black-backed gull, yellow-legged gull) in South Western France are contaminated by PFAS, and to bring further evidence about their potential physiological consequences. Linear PFOS showed concentrations of concern as it was generally >10 times higher than the other PFAS, and exceeded a threshold toxicity level (calculated from previous studies in birds) in almost all sampled chicks. Nonetheless, in herring gull male chicks, total T3 levels were significantly and negatively associated with perfluorodecanoate (PFDA) and perfluorododecanoate (PFDoDA) and positively associated with perfluorotetradecanoate (PFTeDA) in female chicks. Total T3 levels were also positively associated with PFDoDA in great black backed gull male chicks and with perfluorotridecanoate (PFTrDA) in lesser black backed gull chicks. In lesser and great black-backed gulls, both females and males showed significant negative associations between several PFAS and their body condition, and a positive association between telomere length and L-PFOS in the yellow-legged gull was also found. These results corroborate previous findings and need to be further explored as they suggest that PFAS may interfere with the physiological status of chicks during the developmental period, potentially inducing long-lasting consequences.

The Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus) is a semi-colonial raptor species widely but patchily distributed across the Palearctic region with recorded cases of philopatry and presence of extra-pair copulation. In order to assess Montagu's harrier spatial genetic structure and contemporary gene flow, we developed 16 new microsatellite markers using 454 pyrosequencing. Genotypes of 117 chicks sampled in a 200 × 300 km farmland area in Central Western France were analyzed to characterize genetic polymorphism at each locus and regional and fine-scale genetic structure. Fourteen markers were found polymorphic, with a number of alleles ranging from 3 to 11. The expected and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.36 to 0.856 and from 0.35 to 0.868, respectively. A single genetic unit was found at the regional scale with higher genetic similarity observed at a small spatial scale (up to 10 km). Our results are consistent with overall large-scale juvenile and adult dispersal together with small-scale male philopatry. Cross-species amplification of this set of microsatellites makers has been successful in two closely related harrier species: the marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and the Hen harrier (Circus cyaneus) for which 14 and 12 markers were polymorphic, respectively. These new microsatellite markers could be used to study the population genetic structure, contemporary gene flow and parentage analyses in these three species and to conduct microsatellite-based demographic inferences on the Montagu's harrier.

We studied skeletal muscle phosphate metabolism abnormalities to examine their contribution at an early stage of congestive heart failure (CHF) in rats with aortocaval fistula (ACF) 4 wk after the procedure. In a group of 26 rats (13 with ACF and 13 sham operated), we assessed the degree of CHF. The ACF produced a significant rise in heart weight and plasma atrial natriuretic peptide. In a second group of 26 rats (13 ACF and 13 sham operated), we performed 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the gastrocnemius muscle during motor activity produced by electrical stimulation. The rate of phosphocreatine depletion, expressed by its initial slope, was higher in the ACF rats compared with controls (0.078 +/- 0.01 vs. 0.041 +/- 0.007; P < 0.03). pH and ATP decreased and phosphodiesters increased in all rats during electrical stimulation, with no difference between ACF rats and controls. The kinetics of phosphocreatine recovery were not different between ACF rats and controls. Together with previous studies, our present results suggest that muscle metabolism abnormalities in CHF may vary according to the experimental model and may be observed early in the course of the disease.
