RESUMO

Major burn trauma is one of the greatest insults the body can sustain. Complex responses to this injury greatly increase the body's energy and nutritional requirements. This article presents the metabolic responses and associated nutritional requirements that occur with a thermal injury. Nursing standards of care for the nutritional management of the patient with thermal injury are presented, since nurses have a primary role in managing the patient's care in a manner that will provide adequate nutrients, reduce energy demands, and prevent potential complications associated with the injury, healing process, and therapeutic interventions.

RESUMO

The overall outcome for every patient is to attain the maximum level of physical and psychosocial functioning possible within their capacity. This is individualized and impacted by the severity of injury, interventions, and subsequent outcomes along the critical path to recovery. Identification of issues, whether physical or psychosocial, in a timely manner and the development of an individualized plan of care maximize the quality of care each patient receives. As the health care giver in most frequent contact with the patient and family, the nurse must serve as the coordinator of all ancillary services and the plan of care.

RESUMO

Burn trauma is the most devastating injury the body can sustain. Each year, 100,000 victims will sustain burn injuries serious enough to require hospitalization; 35% of these victims are children. The Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children Burns Institute, Cincinnati Unit (SBI-Cincinnati), is a 30-bed hospital with all of the support systems of a major university medical center. SBI-Cincinnati uses a multidisciplinary team approach to family-centered care. The primary nurse and physician collaborate with the rest of the health care team to manage all aspects of care. This approach assures that coordination of care occurs and allows the family the opportunity to maintain a unique role as the primary caregiver.
