RESUMO

Social skills are associated with depression and self-esteem in autistic youth. Minimal comparisons between youth and parent-reported social skills to clinically relevant samples limit existing studies. This study compared the relationships between parent and youth-reported social skills, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms between autistic youth and youth referred for but not given an autism diagnosis. Regression analyses of cross-sectional data revealed that youth-reported social skills statistically predicted self-esteem, parent-reported social skills statistically predicted depressive symptoms, and self-esteem statistically predicted depressive symptoms. All relationships were weaker in the autistic group, except parent-reported social skills and depressive symptoms, which was stronger. Results indicate that poor social skills are associated with mental health outcomes among youth referred for autism diagnosis, but that autism-related factors may influence these relationships. Implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Understanding the patient's experience of mental illness can foster better support for this population and greater partnership with healthcare professionals. This study aims to explore the application of visual methods in the psychiatric field and, in particular, the experience of people suffering from psychotic disorders because it is still an open question that has not been only partially empirically examined. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using two visual methods (auto-photography and photo-elicitation) associated with the narrative that emerged from an unstructured interview, in a clinical setting of adult Mental Health in Italy, between October 2019 and February 2020. A total of 5 patients and 5 corresponding referring healthcare professionals were identified and enrolled.  Patients were asked to produce photographs following 4 thematic areas: "Fun", "Time", "Something indispensable", "Place where I feel good". RESULTS: A total of 85 photographs were produced. Visual methods have proved to be a useful technique in qualitative research in the area of adult psychiatry. From the interviews, it emerged that visual methods have allowed psychotic patients to use a new language to be able to communicate their emotions. CONCLUSIONS: The healthcare professionals involved also confirm the potential of this tool which, when combined with the traditional interview, is able to deepen the patient's knowledge by overcoming the verbal barriers that often make it difficult to reconstruct the individual experience of illness.

RESUMO

The rising prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) necessitates a greater understanding of the academic experience of diagnosed children. The present study investigates several predictors of teacher-reported academic competence among a sample of elementary school children. All children in the sample were referred for an ASD evaluation and approximately half received a diagnosis. Children with and without ASD did not differ on overall academic competence, social skills, or problem behaviors. Regression analyses indicated that cognitive ability, social skills, and problem behaviors accounted for significant variance in academic competence. Moderation analyses indicated that the relations between the predictors and academic competence were comparable for children with and without ASD. Implications and future directions are discussed.

RESUMO

This study examined differences in acoustic characteristics of infant cries in a sample of babies at risk for autism and a low-risk comparison group. Cry samples derived from vocal recordings of 6-month-old infants at risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 21) and low-risk infants (n = 18) were subjected to acoustic analyses using analysis software designed for this purpose. Cries were categorized as either pain-related or non-pain-related based on videotape coding. At-risk infants produced pain-related cries with higher and more variable fundamental frequency (F (0) ) than low-risk infants. At-risk infants later classified with ASD at 36 months had among the highest F (0) values for both types of cries and produced cries that were more poorly phonated than those of nonautistic infants, reflecting cries that were less likely to be produced in a voiced mode. These results provide preliminary evidence that disruptions in cry acoustics may be part of an atypical vocal signature of autism in early life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in visuo-spatial abilities have been well documented in the general population, but there are only a few inconsistent reports in schizophrenia. The purpose of the present study was to examine potential sex differences in performance and pattern of brain activations during mental rotation in schizophrenia patients relative to control participants. METHODS: Thirty three schizophrenia patients (17 women and 16 men) were compared to thirty five healthy control participants (17 women and 18 men), while performing a classic mental rotation task (3-D figures). Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) echo-planar images were acquired on a 3-Tesla Siemens TRIO system. Random-effect analyses were performed using SPM5 (UK Wellcome Institute). RESULTS: Behavioural data revealed a diagnosis-by-sex interaction with healthy men (HM) performing significantly better than schizophrenia men (SZ-M) and no significant difference between healthy women (HW) and schizophrenia women (SZ-W). fMRI results revealed an overall similar pattern of extensive cerebral activations (in the parietal and lateral prefrontal cortex) and deactivations (in the medial prefrontal cortex) in HM and SZ-W during performance of the mental rotation versus control task. In contrast, both HW and SZ-M showed much more restricted activations and no significant deactivations. CONCLUSIONS: Sex differences in performance and cerebral activations during mental rotation in schizophrenia patients deviated significantly from what we observed in healthy volunteers. This finding supports and extends existing evidence of a disturbed sexual dimorphism in schizophrenia. Moreover, the results emphasize the importance of including both sexes in neurocognitive and neuroimaging studies of schizophrenia.

RESUMO

Recent studies suggest that both executive dysfunction and personality traits combine with symptoms to affect the social outcome of persons with schizophrenia. This study was designed to investigate how personality traits influence executive function in schizophrenia. Forty-four patients with schizophrenia and twenty-two healthy subjects were assessed for personality using the temperament and character inventory. Different aspects of executive function were assessed using the Auditory Digit Span (forward and backward) and the Wickens' test for proactive interference and release. The results showed that the influences of the various temperament dimensions on specific aspects of executive functions differ between patients and healthy subjects. On some dimensions, schizophrenia appears to reduce the cognitive differences related to temperament. On other dimensions, schizophrenia tends to reverse the cognitive differences related to temperament observed in healthy people. These results suggest that the temperamental profile of schizophrenia patients may well be of important prognostic value in the planning of cognitive enhancement therapy.
