RESUMO

Standard proxies for reconstructing surface mass balance (SMB) in Antarctic ice cores are often inaccurate or coarsely resolved when applied to more complicated environments away from dome summits. Here, we propose an alternative SMB proxy based on photolytic fractionation of nitrogen isotopes in nitrate observed at 114 sites throughout East Antarctica. Applying this proxy approach to nitrate in a shallow core drilled at a moderate SMB site (Aurora Basin North), we reconstruct 700 years of SMB changes that agree well with changes estimated from ice core density and upstream surface topography. For the under-sampled transition zones between dome summits and the coast, we show that this proxy can provide past and present SMB values that reflect the immediate local environment and are derived independently from existing techniques.

RESUMO

The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is a region that is key to a range of climatic and oceanographic processes with worldwide effects, and is characterised by high biological productivity and biodiversity. Since 2013, the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) has represented the most comprehensive compilation of bathymetry for the Southern Ocean south of 60°S. Recently, the IBCSO Project has combined its efforts with the Nippon Foundation - GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project supporting the goal of mapping the world's oceans by 2030. New datasets initiated a second version of IBCSO (IBCSO v2). This version extends to 50°S (covering approximately 2.4 times the area of seafloor of the previous version) including the gateways of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Antarctic circumpolar frontal systems. Due to increased (multibeam) data coverage, IBCSO v2 significantly improves the overall representation of the Southern Ocean seafloor and resolves many submarine landforms in more detail. This makes IBCSO v2 the most authoritative seafloor map of the area south of 50°S.

RESUMO

We present a new simple and efficient method for correlation of unevenly and differently sampled data. This new method overcomes problems with other methods for correlation with non-uniform sampling and is an easy modification to existing correlation based codes. To demonstrate the usefulness of this new method to real-world examples, we apply the method with good success to two glaciological examples to map the ages from a well-dated ice core to a nearby core, and by tracing isochronous layers within the ice sheet measured from ice-penetrating radar between the two ice core sites.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an increasingly common procedure in the United Kingdom and incurs vast costs, with a mean length of stay (LOS) of 5.5 days. Reducing LOS plays a key role in improving cost-effectiveness, morbidity, and patient satisfaction following many orthopaedic procedures. The aim of this study was to identify attributes in patients with the shortest LOS following THA, with a view to targeting those with the potential for early discharge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1280 THA cases over one year at one institution were reviewed in a retrospective case note study. Of these, 131 patients had LOS=2 days. Various factors (age, gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, primary diagnosis, body mass index (BMI), socio-economic status) were compared between this group and the rest of the cohort. Further characteristics of the short LOS group were also explored to identify trends for future study. RESULTS: Lower age, male gender, and low ASA grade were significantly associated with the short LOS group (all p<0.001). BMI, primary diagnosis, and socioeconomic status showed no significant differences. Short LOS patients were also noted to have few comorbidities, family at home, and independent transport. CONCLUSION: Younger age, male gender, and lower ASA grade are associated with early discharge following THA, and could be used to identify patients suitable for early discharge.

RESUMO

The first Cenozoic ice sheets initiated in Antarctica from the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains and other highlands as a result of rapid global cooling ∼34 million years ago. In the subsequent 20 million years, at a time of declining atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and an evolving Antarctic circumpolar current, sedimentary sequence interpretation and numerical modelling suggest that cyclical periods of ice-sheet expansion to the continental margin, followed by retreat to the subglacial highlands, occurred up to thirty times. These fluctuations were paced by orbital changes and were a major influence on global sea levels. Ice-sheet models show that the nature of such oscillations is critically dependent on the pattern and extent of Antarctic topographic lowlands. Here we show that the basal topography of the Aurora Subglacial Basin of East Antarctica, at present overlain by 2-4.5 km of ice, is characterized by a series of well-defined topographic channels within a mountain block landscape. The identification of this fjord landscape, based on new data from ice-penetrating radar, provides an improved understanding of the topography of the Aurora Subglacial Basin and its surroundings, and reveals a complex surface sculpted by a succession of ice-sheet configurations substantially different from today's. At different stages during its fluctuations, the edge of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet lay pinned along the margins of the Aurora Subglacial Basin, the upland boundaries of which are currently above sea level and the deepest parts of which are more than 1 km below sea level. Although the timing of the channel incision remains uncertain, our results suggest that the fjord landscape was carved by at least two iceflow regimes of different scales and directions, each of which would have over-deepened existing topographic depressions, reversing valley floor slopes.

RESUMO

Theoretical models for the description of microdialysis outflow:inflow (O/I) ratio for 3H2O and [14C]ethanol were developed, taking into account the nutritive fraction of total blood flow in muscle. The models yielded an approximately exponential decay expression for the O/I ratio, dependent on the physical dimensions of a linear probe (length and radius), the flow rate through the probe, muscle blood flow (including the nutritive fraction) and the diffusion coefficients for the tracer in the probe and muscle. The models compared favourably with experimental data from the constant-flow perfused rat hindlimb. Estimates of the nutritive fraction of total blood flow from experimental data were determined by minimizing the error between model and experimental data. The nutritive fraction was found to be 0.22 +/- 0.04 under basal perfusion conditions. When 70 nM noradrenaline (norepinephrine) was included in the perfusion medium, the nutritive fraction was 0.91 +/- 0.06 (P < 0.05). The inclusion of 300 nM serotonin, decreased the nutritive fraction to 0.05 +/- 0.01 (P < 0.05). This model can be applied to the determination of nutritive fraction of skeletal muscle blood flow in physiologically relevant microvascular conditions such as during exercise and in disease states.
