RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of a social cognitive career theory (SCCT)-based educational intervention combined with an evidence-based practice (EBP) continuing professional education (CPE) program (standard-plus group) as compared to the EBPCPE program alone (standard group) and a no-treatment control on research outcome constructs (research self-efficacy, research outcome expectations, research interest and research involvement) in dietitians. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial measured the effect of an online 14-week educational intervention, with measurements made pre- and post-intervention and at 3-month follow-up. A randomly selected list of registered dietitians (RDs), who reported clinical nutrition as their primary practice area, was obtained from the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Subjects (n=580) were randomly assigned to three study groups, and 47.2% (n=272) completed data collection. RESULTS: The treatment effect between the groups was significantly different for research self-efficacy (p<0.001) and research involvement (p=0.005), with positive effects observed in the standard-plus and standard groups. There were no significant effects for research outcome expectations and research interest. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first known application of SCCT to RD research involvement as a career-related behavioral outcome, and it demonstrated that a significant increase in research self-efficacy occurs following participation in an educational intervention on EBP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identity barriers to implementing the social support intervention, Circle of Support, in supported employment (SE) services for people with psychiatric disabilities. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were administered to SE staff at three month intervals up to one year. Two focus groups were held with service recipients who did not participate in a circle of support. Interviews were conducted with two individuals receiving SE services who participated in a pilot project in which study researchers implemented circles of support. RESULTS: Common themes regarding the barriers to implementing a circle of support developed from the data. Service recipients who did not participate in a circle of support and those who did expressed the perceived and actual barriers to this approach as being: time, too much focus on the participant, and lack of control/facilitation of circle activities. Service recipients who participated in a pilot who had circles of support reported that this intervention was beneficial to them. Staff and service recipients identified time, running of the actual circle of support meetings, and supporter issues as barriers to implementing this technique. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Although certain barriers to this technique were identified, there were features of this approach that both staff and service recipients, who had a circle of support, found beneficial. Since ongoing support is a critical component of successful employment, individuals may benefit from the use of these Circles of Support techniques.

RESUMO

Readiness in the work domain has been a controversial issue for the psychiatric rehabilitation community. Judgments of a lack of readiness have relegated many persons to lives of continued unemployment and service dependency. Conversely, proponents of the rapid placement strategy of supported employment have down-played the importance of readiness. Yet, a careful review of the supported employment research suggests that readiness may indeed be an important factor in vocational outcomes. This paper presents evidence that the screening criteria employed in SE studies are often related to readiness factors and that these criteria are highly predictive of vocational outcomes. Acceptance of the importance of readiness for success in the vocational arena implies new service strategies and may serve to improve vocational outcomes in general.
