RESUMO

32 patients with traumatic injuries of the cervical spine were investigated by CT. All patients were initially examined by plain films. CT was definitely superior to conventional radiology in compressive fractures of vertebral bodies. In flexion-extension injuries CT was useful showing fractures of the posterior elements in great detail. Conventional tomography was superior to CT in patients with complex dislocations of vertebral bodies. In the absence of fracture CT failed to detect disruptions of ligaments, which were readily shown by functional examination.

RESUMO

In two female patients a diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome secondary to hepatic echinococcosis was established by CT. One patient developed acute Budd-Chiari syndrome secondary to E. granulosus lesions of the liver. The second patient presented with a picture of chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome secondary to alveolar echinococcosis. CT findings of Budd-Chiari syndrome included ascites, low density areas in the liver parenchyma, hypertrophy of the caudate lobe, non visualisation of the hepatic veins, occlusion of the retrohepatic inferior vena cava and enlarged retroperitoneal veins.

RESUMO

The radiographic findings in the hand of 12 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis are described. 8 patients had osteopenia, one of these radiographic signs of hyperparathyroidism. Erosive arthritis was present in 5 of the 12 cases. Hyperostosis at ligamentous attachments was seen in 3 patients. Chondrocalcinosis was present in one case.

RESUMO

The absorption values of cancellous bone of the third lumbar vertebral body were measured in 80 patients by CT. It was possible to demonstrate a statistically significant linear correlation between absorption values and patient age. The older the patient, the lower the average absorption values of cancellous bone. The average absorption values in patients between 20 and 30 Jrs. were found to be about 200 HU, between 30 and 50 Jrs. 180, between 60 and 70 Jrs. 120 and between 70 and 80 Jrs. 100 HU. Although correlation between calcium salt content and absorption of bone under CT are well known, there are other factors (mainly fatty involution of bone marrow) who influences the absorption behaviour of cancellous bone.
