RESUMO

Short-chain fatty acids, such as butyric acid, derived from the intestinal fermentation of dietary fiber, have been proposed as a treatment for certain pathologies of the central nervous system. Our research group has shown that tributyrin (TB), a butyric acid prodrug, reverses deficits in spatial memory and modulates hippocampal synaptic plasticity. In the present work, diets enriched in either saturated (SOLF; Saturated OiL-enriched Food) or unsaturated (UOLF; Unsaturated OiL-enriched Food) fat were supplied during either 2 h or 8 weeks to 5-week-old male and female mice undergoing a treatment schedule with TB. After the dietary treatment, spatial learning and memory (SLM) was assessed in both the Y-maze and the eight-arm radial maze (RAM). Hippocampal expression of genes involved in glutamatergic transmission as well as synaptic plasticity (long-term potentiation -LTP- and long-term depression -LTD-) were also analyzed. Our results show that 2 h of SOLF intake impaired LTP as well as the performance in the Y-Maze in juvenile male mice whereas no effect was found in females. Moreover, TB reversed both effects in SLM and LTP in males. In the case of chronic intake, both SOLF and UOLF deteriorated SLM measured in the RAM in both sexes whereas TB only reversed LTP impairment induced by SOLF in male mice. These results suggest that TB may have a potentially beneficial influence on learning and memory processes, contingent upon the type of diet and the sex of the individuals.

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effect of a synchronous-supervised online home-based exercise program (HBG) during 24 weeks on body composition, physical fitness and adherence compared to an exercise recommendation group (ERG) without supervision with patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. Fifty-nine female breast cancer patients (31 in HBG and 28 in the ERG) undergoing cancer treatments participated in the present randomized clinical trial. The exercise program consisted of a 60 min combined resistance and aerobic supervised exercise session (6-8 points on Borg Scale CR-10, moderate intensity), twice a week during 24 weeks. The exercise recommendation group only received general recommendations to comply with the current ACSM guidelines. Body composition and physical fitness were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks and 24 weeks of the program. Adherence to the intervention was measured according to the minutes of exercise completed per session during each week. A general linear model of two-way repeated measures showed significant improvements (p < 0.05) in physical fitness that were observed in the home-based exercise group at the baseline, 12-week and 24-week assessments compared to the exercise recommendation group. Adherence was also higher in the home-based exercise group. However, no changes (p > 0.05) in body composition between groups and moments were observed. In this sense, supervised home-based exercise interventions can be an interesting strategy to improve physical fitness and adherence rates in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The Aggie Figures Learning Test (AFLT) is a visual memory assessment tool, which was constructed as an analog to the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). Since the test holds close resemblance to the RAVLT, it is possible to make meaningful comparisons between these two tests. These comparisons are notably relevant in the assessment of material-specific memory impairments in epilepsy. However, the AFLT convergent validity has not yet been established. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate the convergent validity of the AFLT and to provide norms for an adult population ranging from 18 to 58. METHOD: 140 healthy volunteers participated in the study. They ranged in age from 18 to 58 years, with 12 to 25 years of education. Subjects were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery which included the ALFT (A version) and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). RESULTS: Positive correlations were found between the scores of both tests for recent memory (r = 0.606, p < 0.01), delayed free recall (r = 0.534, p < 0.01) and recognition memory (r = 0.202, p < 0.05). These results demonstrate the convergent validity of the AFLT. CONCLUSIONS: The AFLT is a visual memory assessment tool with adequate psychometric properties, which allows a comprehensive evaluation of visual memory processes.

BACKGROUND: The C-terminal-binding protein 1/brefeldin A ADP-ribosylation substrate (CtBP1/BARS) acts both as an oncogenic transcriptional co-repressor and as a fission inducing protein required for membrane trafficking and Golgi complex partitioning during mitosis, hence for mitotic entry. CtBP1/BARS overexpression, in multiple cancers, has pro-tumorigenic functions regulating gene networks associated with "cancer hallmarks" and malignant behavior including: increased cell survival, proliferation, migration/invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Structurally, CtBP1/BARS belongs to the hydroxyacid-dehydrogenase family and possesses a NAD(H)-binding Rossmann fold, which, depending on ligands bound, controls the oligomerization of CtBP1/BARS and, in turn, its cellular functions. Here, we proposed to target the CtBP1/BARS Rossmann fold with small molecules as selective inhibitors of mitotic entry and pro-tumoral transcriptional activities. METHODS: Structured-based screening of drug databases at different development stages was applied to discover novel ligands targeting the Rossmann fold. Among these identified ligands, N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-{[(4-nitrophenyl)carbamoyl]amino}benzenesulfonamide, called Comp.11, was selected for further analysis. Fluorescence spectroscopy, isothermal calorimetry, computational modelling and site-directed mutagenesis were employed to define the binding of Comp.11 to the Rossmann fold. Effects of Comp.11 on the oligomerization state, protein partners binding and pro-tumoral activities were evaluated by size-exclusion chromatography, pull-down, membrane transport and mitotic entry assays, Flow cytometry, quantitative real-time PCR, motility/invasion, and colony assays in A375MM and B16F10 melanoma cell lines. Effects of Comp.11 on tumor growth in vivo were analyzed in mouse tumor model. RESULTS: We identify Comp.11 as a new, potent and selective inhibitor of CtBP1/BARS (but not CtBP2). Comp.11 directly binds to the CtBP1/BARS Rossmann fold affecting the oligomerization state of the protein (unlike other known CtBPs inhibitors), which, in turn, hinders interactions with relevant partners, resulting in the inhibition of both CtBP1/BARS cellular functions: i) membrane fission, with block of mitotic entry and cellular secretion; and ii) transcriptional pro-tumoral effects with significantly hampered proliferation, EMT, migration/invasion, and colony-forming capabilities. The combination of these effects impairs melanoma tumor growth in mouse models.  CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies a potent and selective inhibitor of CtBP1/BARS active in cellular and melanoma animal models revealing new opportunities to study the role of CtBP1/BARS in tumor biology and to develop novel melanoma treatments.

Introduction: To use a test in a language or culture other than the original it is necessary to carry out, in addition to its adaptation, a psychometric validation. This systematic review assesses the validation studies of the voice self-report scales in Spanish. Methods: A systematic review was performed searching ten databases. The assessment was carried out following the criteria proposed by Terwee et al. (2007) together with some specifically proposed for this study. Validation studies in Spanish of self-report voice scales published in indexed journals were included and the search was updated on February 2nd, 2023. Results: 15 studies that evaluated 12 scales were reviewed. It was verified that not all the validations were adjusted to the criteria used and that the properties to verify the metric strength of the validations were, in general, few. Conclusions: This systematic review shows that the included studies do not report much evidence of metric quality. It should be considered that different strategies have currently been developed to obtain more and better evidence of reliability and validity. Our contribution is to reflect on the usual practice of validation of self-report scales in Spanish language. The most important weakness is the possibility of using broader and more current evaluation protocols. We also propose to continue this work, completing it with a meta-analytic study.(AU)


Introducción: Para utilizar una prueba en una lengua o cultura distinta de la original es preciso realizar, además de su adaptación, una validación psicométrica. Esta revisión sistemática valora los estudios de validación de las escalas de autoinforme de voz en español. Método: Se realizó una revisión sistemática buscando en diez bases de datos. La valoración se llevó a cabo siguiendo los criterios propuestos por Terwee et al. (2007) junto con algunos específicamente propuestos para este trabajo. Se incluyeron estudios de validación en español de escalas de autoinforme publicados en revistas indexadas. La última búsqueda fue realizada el 2 de febrero de 2023. Resultados: Se revisaron 15 trabajos que evaluaron 12 escalas. Se comprobó que no todas las validaciones se ajustaron a los criterios utilizados y que las propiedades para comprobar la robustez métrica de estas fueron, por lo general, pocas.Conclusiones: Esta revisión sistemática muestra que los estudios incluidos no reportan demasiada evidencia de calidad métrica. Debería considerarse que en la actualidad se han desarrollado diferentes estrategias para obtener más y mejor evidencia de fiabilidad y validez. Nuestra contribución ha sido valorar la práctica de la validación de las escalas de autoinforme en lengua española. La más importante debilidad es la posibilidad de usar algún protocolo más amplio y actual. También proponemos continuar este trabajo con un estudio metaanalítico.(AU)

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to describe our initial experience using magnetic seeds (Magseed®) to guide breast-conserving surgery in non-palpable breast lesions and compare the use of magnetic seed with wires to guide breast-conserving surgery in terms of clinical and pathological characteristics. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study including all breast-conserving surgeries for non-palpable breast lesions under 16 mm from June 2018 to May 2021. We compared breast-conserving surgeries guided with magnetic seeds (Magseed®) to those guided with wires, analyzing tumor and patient characteristics, surgical time, and pathological results of the surgical specimens. RESULTS: Data from 225 cases were collected, including 149 cases guided by magnetic seeds and 76 cases guided by wires. The breast lesion was localized in every case. Both cohorts were similar regarding clinical and pathological characteristics. We found significant statistical differences (p < 0.02) in terms of the median volume (cm3) of the excised specimen, which was lower (29.3%) in the magnetic seed group compared with the wire group (32.5 [20.5-60.0]/46.0 [20.3-118.7]). We did not find significant differences regarding surgical time (min) or the affected or close margins. CONCLUSION: In our experience, the use of magnetic seed (Magseed®) is a feasible option to guide breast-conserving surgery of non-palpable lesions and enabled us to resect less breast tissue.

The plexiform fibromyxoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor in adults that generally originates in the antrum of stomach, being its occurrence in pediatric patients exceptional. It was classified as a distinct entity by World Health Organization in 2010. No recurrences and metastases have been documented in many of the reported patients to date, being the surgical treatment curative. We report the case of a 3-month-old infant who presented to the emergency department with an episode of intestinal subocclusion requiring an emergent surgery. During the surgical intervention, a mass was identified in the jejunum, causing partial occlusion of its lumen. The surgical pathology report revealed an infiltrative tumor composed of spindle-shaped cells disposed in a stroma with a plexiform pattern alternating myxoid areas. These findings and the immunohistochemical characteristics of the neoplastic cells led to classify the tumor as a plexiform fibromyxoma. A description of the immunophenotype of this tumor is made and differential diagnosis with other gastrointestinal tumors is also discussed.

The Cow's Milk-related Symptom Score (CoMiSS) is an awareness tool for evaluating cow's milk-related symptoms. Previous studies have focused on providing CoMiSS values for healthy and symptomatic infants aged 0-6 months. However, there is a notable gap in the literature concerning CoMiSS values for infants older than 6 months. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine CoMiSS values in presumed healthy infants who have completed 6 months and are up to 12 months old, hereafter referred to as 6 to 12 months old. Physicians from six European countries prospectively determined CoMiSS values in infants attending well-child clinics. Exclusion criteria included preterm delivery, acute or chronic disease, and the consumption of a therapeutic formula, dietary supplements (except vitamins), or medication. The following information was collected: gestational age, gender, age, type of feed (breast milk or infant formula), and complementary feeding. Descriptive statistics were summarized with mean and standard deviation for normally distributed continuous variables, median and IQR for non-normally distributed variables, and differences in CoMiSS values were analyzed with appropriate tests. Data from 609 infants were obtained. The overall median (Q1-Q3) CoMiSS values were 3 (1-5). Significant differences were found across age groups (p < 0.001), but not across groups based on gender (p = 0.551) or feeding type (p = 0.880).   Conclusions: This study provided CoMiSS values in presumed healthy infants aged 6-12 months. Additional studies should be conducted to establish the use of CoMiSS to assess cow's milk-related symptoms in infants 6 months and older. What is Known: • The Cow's Milk-related Symptom Score (CoMiSS) is an awareness tool for evaluating symptoms related to cow's milk. • CoMiSS values for presumed healthy infants aged 0-6 months infants are already available. BACKGROUND: While migraine is markedly prevalent in women, gender-related phenotype differences were rarely assessed. For this reason, we investigated, through a multicenter observational cross-sectional study, based on an online questionnaire, gender-related differences in stress factors, emotions, and pain perception in migraine patients and controls and their impact on migraine severity. METHODS: The study was designed as an online questionnaire. The link was emailed to healthy subjects (C) and migraine patients (MIG) (age 18-75, education ≥ 13 years) recruited during the first visit in 8 Italian Headache Centers adhering to Italian Society for Headache Study (SISC). The questionnaire included personal/social/work information, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Romance Quality Scale, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Body Perception Questionnaire, the pain perception, and a self-assessment of migraine severity in the last 3 months. RESULTS: 202 MIG and 202 C completed the survey. Independently from gender, migraine was characterized by higher pain sensitivity and more severe partner relationships. The female gender, in MIG, exhibited higher anxiety scores, body awareness, and reduced emotional suppression. Body awareness and emotional suppression were discriminating factors between genders in control and migraine groups without relevant influence on disease features. Perceived perception of migraine severity was similar between genders. CONCLUSION: Gender-related emotional and stress factors did not contribute to delineate a distinct phenotype in migraine men and women. The possible impact of emotional and stress factors characterizing genders could be considered for a single case-tailored therapeutic approach.

OBJECTIVE: Intestinal inflammation with contradictory data on faecal calprotectin (fCP) levels is documented in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this study was to longitudinally evaluate fCP in a cohort of children with CF and their relationship with clinical variables. DESIGN: Prospective observational study to assess evolution of fCP levels, primary aimed at improving fat absorption. Along 1.5 years of follow-up (November 2016-May 2018) with four study visits pertaining to a pilot study (two of four) and to a clinical trial (two of four), the study outcomes were measured. SETTING: Six European CF centres in the context of MyCyFAPP Project. SUBJECTS: Children with CF and pancreatic insufficiency (2-18 years old). MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: fCP levels, pulmonary function (percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1%)) and coefficient of fat absorption (CFA). Additionally, in the last two visits, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were evaluated through the PedsQL-GI Questionnaire. Linear mixed regression models were applied to assess association between fCP and FEV1, CFA and GI symptoms. RESULTS: Twenty-nine children with CF and pancreatic insufficiency were included. fCP levels were inversely associated with total modified specific PedsQL-GI score (p=0.04) and positively associated with diarrhoea (p=0.03), but not with CFA. Along the four study visits, fCP significantly increased (from 62 to 256 µg/g) and pulmonary function decreased (from 97% to 87%), with a significant inverse association between the two study outcomes (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In children with CF, fCP levels are inversely associated with pulmonary function and thus the specificity of fCP as a marker of intestinal inflammation in paediatric patients with CF warrants further investigation.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic required an immediate response to the healthcare challenges it posed. This study was conducted to identify actions that helped healthcare professionals to overcome the initial impact in Mendoza (Argentina). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a non-random sample of managers and staff of the public health system of Mendoza (Argentina) (n = 134). An ad-hoc and voluntary survey was carried out with 5 multi-response questions that combined questions referring to the management of the pandemic at the organizational level with others referring to coping at the individual level. The survey questions were formulated based on the results of six focus groups that were conducted previously. Descriptive frequency analysis was performed. RESULTS: 60 people agreed to participate and 45 answered the full questionnaire. At both the organizational and individual level, there was consensus with at least 50% of votes. The most outstanding at the organizational level was "Prioritize the need according to risk" and at the individual level it was "Support from family or friends", being also the most voted option in the whole questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: The responses that emerged for coping with COVID-19 must be seen as an opportunity to identify strategies that could be effective in addressing future crisis situations that jeopardize the system's response capacity. Moreover, it is essential to retain both changes at the organizational level (e.g., new protocols, multidisciplinary work, shift restructuring, etc.) and coping strategies at the individual level (e.g., social support, leisure activities, etc.) that have proven positive outcomes.

The clean label approach is behind the development of the new concept, coloring food, in contrast to regulated food colorants, although few data are available regarding its composition. Consequently, twenty-six commercial green foods (including novel foods) have been analyzed to investigate the authentic composition behind the different labels. It has been identified by HPLC-ESI/APCI-hrTOF-MS2 the complete array of chlorophylls in the regulated green food colorants, several of them identified for the first time in foods. The coloring food alternative is based on mixing blue (such as spirulina) and yellow (such as safflower) hues. Our data suggest that in the analyzed samples, spirulina is water or solvent extracted before being added to the food. The obtained results showed for the first time, the authentic data on the chemical composition of the new green foods.

This article explores the new developments and challenges of agricultural Gene Editing (GED) regulation in primarily nine countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Region: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru. As Gene Editing technology develops, Latin America and the Caribbean regulatory regimes struggle to keep pace. Developers and regulators face challenges such as consumer perceptions, intellectual property, R&D funding (private and public), training, environmental and social impact, and access to domestic and international markets. Some Latin America and the Caribbean countries (e.g., Argentina) interpret existing legislation to promulgate regulations for biotechnology and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), while others (e.g., Brazil and Honduras) have specific legislation for Genetically Modified Organisms. In both those cases, often a case-by-case approach is chosen to determine whether a Gene Editing organism is subject to Genetically Modified Organisms regulations or not. Other countries such as Peru have opted to ban the technology due to its perceived resemblance to transgenic Genetically Modified Organisms. After presenting the regulatory landscape for agricultural Gene Editing in Latin America and the Caribbean, this article addresses some of the differences and similarities across the region. Some countries have had more foresight and have dedicated resources to increase capacity and develop regulations (e.g., Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico before 2018) while others struggle with bureaucratic limitations and partisanship of policymaking (e.g., Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico after 2018). We propose that the differences and similarities between these regulatory regimes have emerged in part as a result of policy entrepreneurs (influential individuals actively involved in policy making) taking advantage of policy windows (opportunities for shaping policy and regulation). The third and remaining sections of this study discuss our main findings. Based on 41 semi structured interviews with regulators, scientists, product developers, NGOs and activists, we arrived at three main findings. First, there seems to be a consensus among most regulators interviewed that having harmonized regimes is a positive step to facilitate product development and deployment, leading to commercialization. Second, reducing bureaucracy (e.g., paper work) and increasing flexibility in regulation go hand in hand to expedite the acquisition of key lab materials required by developers in countries with less robust regimes such as Peru and Bolivia. Finally, developing public and private partnerships, fostering transparency, and increasing the involvement of marginalized groups may increase the legitimacy of Gene Editing regulation.

Consumers demand higher levels of food quality and safety, so food legislative organizations need full knowledge of food composition to develop regulations that guarantee quality and safety criteria. This is the context for green natural food colorants and the new category green "coloring foodstuffs". We have exploited the capabilities of targeted metabolomics assisted by powerful software and algorithms to unravel the comprehensive chlorophyll composition in commercial samples of both colorant categories. With the aid of an in-house library, at first, seven new chlorophylls have been identified, among all the samples analyzed, providing data on their structural configuration. Next, taking advantage of an expert-curated database, eight more chlorophylls non-described previously have been found, which will be significant for the chemistry of chlorophylls. Finally, we have deciphered the sequence of chemical reactions that take place during the manufacturing of green food colorants and propose the whole pathway that explains the occurrence of the chlorophylls they contain.

Studies are scarce regarding IgG anti-tissue transglutaminase 2 (tTG) normalization in selective IgA deficient (SIgAD) celiac disease (CD) patients after beginning a gluten free diet (GFD). The aim of this study is to analyse the decreasing dynamics of IgG anti-tTG in patients diagnosed with CD who start a GFD. To achieve this objective, IgG and IgA anti-tTG levels at diagnosis and during follow-up in 11 SIgAD CD patients and in 20 IgA competent CD patients were retrospectively evaluated. At diagnosis, statistical differences were not found when comparing IgA anti-tTG levels of IgA competent subjects with IgG anti-tTG levels of SIgAD subjects. Regarding the decreasing dynamics, even though no statistical differences were found (p = 0.06), normalization rates were slower for SIgAD CD patients. After 1 and 2 years on GFD, respectively, only 18.2% and 36.3% of the SIgAD CD patients normalized IgG anti-tTG levels; otherwise, IgA anti-tTG reached values under the reference values in 30% and 80% of the IgA competent patients in the same time-points. Although IgG anti-tTG has demonstrated a high diagnostic efficiency in SIgAD CD pediatric patients, this test does not appear to be as precise for long-term GFD response monitoring as IgA anti-tTG levels in IgA sufficient patients.

Executive dysfunction (EF) is a common feature of adult traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially in moderate to severe cases. Assessing EF usually requires the administration of an extensive neuropsychological battery, which is time consuming and expensive. The INECO frontal screening (IFS) is a brief, easy-to-administer screening test which has previously shown to be useful in the detection of executive deficits in different psychiatric and neurological populations. The aim of the present study was to assess the usefulness of the IFS in the detection of executive dysfunction in TBI patients. Twenty-eight TBI patients and thirty-two healthy controls were assessed with a battery that included classical executive tests and the IFS. Our results indicated that with a cutoff score of 26.25 points, the IFS showed good sensitivity and specificity in the detection of executive impairments in TBI patients. It also showed good positive and negative predicted values. Our results suggest that the IFS can be considered a useful tool for identifying executive dysfunction in patients with TBI.

BACKGROUND: low evidence on the dose of enzymatic supplements used in pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is available. AIM: assessing if fat, protein and starch absorption could be related to the dose of the enzymatic supplement, the intra-patient variability in the dose and macronutrient intake. METHODS: Four-day food records and 3-day faecal samples were prospectively collected in 69 children with cystic fibrosis. Pearson correlations between enzyme dose and macronutrient absorption, and beta regression models were applied to explain the results. RESULTS: the supply of protease units per protein intake (PU/g protein) in relation to lipase units per fat intake (LU/g fat) was low and the intra-patient variability in the dose of enzymes was ±1331 LU/g fat. Fat and starch absorption was >90% while for protein it was 81.5%. The coefficient of fat absorption was associated with an interaction between the dose of LU/g fat and its variability among different days. Lipid and protein intake were also determinants of the coefficient of fat absorption. CONCLUSION: the dose of PERT should be re-adjusted to the amount of dietary fat of every meal (constant LU/g fat) to minimize variability and increase fat absorption. Also, the supply of protease should be increased to prevent from protein malabsorption.

Green teas are nonfermented teas, the quality of which is measured by the green color. However, this category encompasses a high number of tea varieties that differ in cultivation and processing. For example, leaf or stem/bubble tea, plants cultivated under a light or shadow regime, powdered or unpowdered tea, etc. These variables determine the different qualities among green teas (Matcha, Sencha, Gyokuro, etc.) and consequently their different values on the market. Our purpose is to determine if these variables can exert an influence on the chlorophyll profile and to establish a characteristic profile for specific green teas. With such an aim, we analyzed the chlorophyll profiles of 6 different green tea varieties via HPLC-hr ESI/APCI-MS2 and identified up to 17 different chlorophyll compounds. For the first time, 132-hydroxy-chlorophylls, 132-hydroxy-pheophytins, and 151-hydroxy-lactone-pheophytins have been identified in green teas. Shadow teas (Matcha and Sencha) and light-regimen green teas can be statistically differentiated by the total chlorophyll content and the a/b ratio. However, only Matcha tea contains a higher proportion of chlorophylls a and b among the green tea varieties analyzed, justifying the higher quality and price of this variety. Other chlorophyll metabolites (pheophytins, pyropheophytins, and oxidized chlorophylls) are indicative of the various processing and storage conditions.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the association between serological markers and changes of the intestinal mucosa in children with celiac disease (CD). METHODS: Clinical data from CD patients under 15 years old were collected from the participating centers in an on-line multicenter nationwide observational Spanish registry called REPAC-2 (2011-2017). Correlation between anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (t-TGA) levels and other variables, including mucosal damage and clinical findings (symptoms, age, and gender), was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 2955 of 4838 patients had t-TGA and a small bowel biopsy (SBB) performed for CD diagnosis. A total of 1931 (66.2%) patients with normal IgA values had a Marsh 3b-c lesion and 1892 (64.9%) had t-TGA Immunoglobulin A (IgA) ≥ 10 times upper limit of normal (ULN). There is a statistically significant association between t-TGA IgA levels and the degree of mucosal damage ( P < 0.001), the higher the t-TGA IgA levels the more severe the mucosal damage. Those patients who reported symptoms had more severe mucosal damage ( P = 0.001). On the contrary, there was a negative association between age and changes of the intestinal mucosa ( P < 0.001). No association was found with gender. Regarding the IgA-deficient patients, 47.4% (18 cases) had t-TGA Immunoglobulin A (IgA) ≥ 10 times ULN and a Marsh 3b-c lesion was observed in 68.4% (26 patients). No statistical relation was found between t-TGA IgG levels and the changes of the intestinal mucosa, neither a relation with age, gender, or symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive correlation between t-TGA IgA levels and the severity of changes of the intestinal mucosa. Such correlation was not found in IgA-deficient patients who had positive t-TGA IgG serology. The results in this group of patients support the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition recommendations about the need of performing a SBB in IgA-deficient individuals despite high t-TGA IgG levels.

Introduction and objectives: In recent years, research has reported that between 45% and 70% of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have cognitive deficits, the most prominent being those associated with the frontal lobe. Among these deficits, we can find Theory of Mind (ToM), which is the ability to infer feelings and thoughts of others. Although it has been suggested that ToM relies on more basic skills, such as perspective taking (PT), no studies have investigated this association in patients with MS. The aim of this study was to investigate PT abilities in patients with MS and to establish their relationship with ToM deficits. Material and methods: 36 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and 42 healthy controls matched by age, sex and educational level were evaluated. Both groups were tested to estimate premorbid and current intellectual capacity, PT, ToM (Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test -RMET- and Faux Pas) and complementary scales (fatigue, depression and disability). Results: Patients with RRMS presented significant differences from controls in both PT and ToM tests. The PT test showed positive correlation with RMET, one of our ToM tests. Conclusion: The results show that there is a relationship between ToM and PT abilities. Our findings are of clinical and academic relevance to both the assessment and interpretation as well as the rehabilitation of social deficits in MS.
