RESUMO

High entropy alloys (HEAs) of the type CrCuFeNiTi-Alx were processed through mechanical alloying. The aluminum concentration was varied in the alloy, to determine its effect on the HEAs' microstructure, phase formation, and chemical behavior. X-ray diffraction studies performed on the pressureless sintered samples revealed the presence of structures composed of face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) solid-solution phases. Since the valences of the elements that form the alloy are different, a nearly stoichiometric compound was obtained, increasing the final entropy of the alloy. The aluminum was partly responsible for this situation, which also favored transforming part of the FCC phase into BCC phase on the sintered bodies. X-ray diffraction also indicated the formation of different compounds with the alloy's metals. Bulk samples exhibited microstructures with different phases. The presence of these phases and the results of the chemical analyses revealed the formation of alloying elements that, in turn, formed a solid solution and, consequently, had a high entropy. From the corrosion tests, it could be concluded that the samples with a lower aluminum content were the most resistant to corrosion.

RESUMO

Adsorption stand out among other standard techniques used for water treatment because of its remarkable simplicity, easy operation, and high removal capability. Expanded graphite has been selected as a promising agent for oil spill adsorption, but its production involves the generation of corrosive remnants and massive amounts of contaminated washing waters. Although the advantageous use of the H2O2-H2SO4 mixture was described in 1978, reported works using this method are scarce. This work deals with the urgent necessity for the development of alternative chemical routes decreasing their environmental impact (based on green chemistry concepts), presenting a process for expanded graphite production using only two intercalation chemicals, reducing the consumption of sulfuric acid to only 10% and avoiding the use of strong oxidant salts (both environmentally detrimental). Three process parameters were evaluated: milling effect, peroxide concentration, and microwave expansion. Some remarkable results were obtained following this route: high specific volumes elevated oil adsorption rate exhibiting a high oil-water selectivity and rapid adsorption. Furthermore, the recycling capability was checked using up to six adsorption cycles. Results showed that milling time reduces the specimen's expansion rate and oil adsorption capacity due to poor intercalant insertion and generation of small particle sizes.

RESUMO

Ceramic-metal (CaO·Al2O3-Al and CaO·Al2O3-Ag) compounds were prepared by mechanical milling and consolidated through an in-situ sintering process. The aim of this work is to study the effects of the Al and Ag particles to ceramic-base compound, primarily in the microstructure, and its mechanical and antimicrobial properties. Chemical systems with a 1:1 M ratio between CaCO3 and Al2O3 powder were formed, with the addition of 10 wt% Al or 10 wt% Ag, respectively. The compound material that consolidated were microstructurally characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, optic microscopy, and X-ray computed tomography. In addition, the hardness, the fracture toughness, the transversal elastic modulus, and the antimicrobial property were evaluated. The results of X-ray diffraction identified the formation of the calcium aluminate phases, such as CaO·6Al2O3 (hibonite:CA6), CaO·2Al2O3 (grossite:CA2), and CaO·Al2O3 (krotite:CA); as well as Al and Ag were identified in its respective system. In addition, the mechanical properties show changes compared to the reference material that was synthesized under the same conditions and, finally, these materials also have an antimicrobial effect, against the Staphylococcus bacterium that is common in the oral cavity, when studied in synthetic saliva.

RESUMO

The development of photovoltaic panels has improved the conversion of solar radiation into electrical energy. This paper deals with the electrical and thermal characteristics (voltage, current, and temperature) of photovoltaic solar cells sensitized with natural pigments (dye-sensitized solar cell, DSSC) based on a titanium dioxide semiconductor. Several natural pigments (blackberry, beets, eggplant skin, spinach, flame tree flower, papaya leaf, and grass extracts) were evaluated to determine their sensitizing effect on titanium dioxide. The results showed the great potential of natural pigments for use in solar cells. The best results were obtained with the blackberry pigment, reaching a value of 7.1 mA current, open-circuit voltage (Voc ) of 0.72 V in 2 cm2 , and fill factor (ff) of 0.51 in the DSSC. This performance is well above than that currently offers by actual cells.
