RESUMO

The use of robotic thoracic surgery as an alternative to open resections or video assisted thoracoscopy has increased in recent years due to its many potential benefits to patients. These benefits include less pain and therefore less use of pain medication, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and fewer complications.  This video tutorial describes the robotic resection of a 37-mm by 30-mm esophageal leiomyoma.

RESUMO

A 45-year-old man suffered compartment syndrome of the hands as a complication of prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was admitted following a hypothermic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to cold-water submersion. The patient was in cardiac arrest for 4 h with mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation delivered using the Lund University Cardiac Arrest System (Jolife AB, Lund, Sweden). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation along with aggressive rewarming achieved return of spontaneous circulation. He developed compartment syndrome in his left hand which was likely exacerbated by having his arm strapped to the Lund University Cardiac Arrest System device throughout the resuscitation. The compartment syndrome was managed conservatively. Despite preservation of neurological function the patient died of complications from the cardiac arrest after an extended intensive care unit stay. We recommend healthcare providers unstrap patient's hands during prolonged mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

RESUMO

We report measurements of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) for the D2 line of 87Rb atoms in an antirelaxation-coated vapor cell in the presence of a radio-frequency (rf) field. The experimental NMOR signals as a function of rf field frequency for various rf field powers are compared to a theoretical model based on the density-matrix formalism. The comparison between experiment and theory enables understanding of the ground-state atomic spin polarization dynamics, illustrated using plots of the probability distribution of the atomic angular momentum.

RESUMO

Optical magnetometers measure magnetic fields with extremely high precision and without cryogenics. However, at geomagnetic fields, important for applications from landmine removal to archaeology, they suffer from nonlinear Zeeman splitting, leading to systematic dependence on sensor orientation. We present experimental results on a method of eliminating this systematic error, using the hexadecapole atomic polarization moment. In particular, we demonstrate selective production of the atomic hexadecapole moment at Earth's magnetic field and verify its immunity to nonlinear Zeeman splitting. This technique promises to eliminate directional errors in all-optical atomic magnetometers, potentially improving their measurement accuracy by several orders of magnitude.

RESUMO

We report the use of an atomic magnetometer based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with frequency-modulated light to detect nuclear magnetization of xenon gas. The magnetization of a spin-exchange-polarized xenon sample (1.7 c m(3) at a pressure of 5 bars, natural isotopic abundance, polarization 1% ), prepared remotely to the detection apparatus, is measured with an atomic sensor. An average magnetic field of approximately 10 nG induced by the xenon sample on the 10 cm diameter atomic sensor is detected with signal-to-noise ratio approximately 10 , limited by residual noise in the magnetic environment. The possibility of using modern atomic magnetometers as detectors of nuclear magnetic resonance and in magnetic resonance imaging is discussed. Atomic magnetometers appear to be ideally suited for emerging low-field and remote-detection magnetic resonance applications.

We consider the limitations due to noise (e.g., quantum projection noise and photon shot-noise) on the sensitivity of an idealized atomic magnetometer that utilizes spin squeezing induced by a continuous quantum nondemolition measurement. Such a magnetometer measures spin precession of N atomic spins by detecting optical rotation of far-detuned light. We show that for very short measurement times, the optimal sensitivity scales as N(-3/4); if strongly squeezed probe light is used, the Heisenberg limit of N-1 scaling can be achieved. However, if the measurement time exceeds tau(rel)/N(1/2) in the former case, or tau(rel)/N in the latter, where tau(rel) is the spin relaxation time, the scaling becomes N(-1/2), as for a standard shot-noise-limited magnetometer.

RESUMO

We describe a method of selective generation and study of polarization moments of up to the highest-rank kappa=2F possible for a quantum state with total angular momentum F. The technique is based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with frequency-modulated light. Various polarization moments are distinguished by the periodicity of light-polarization rotation induced by the atoms during Larmor precession and exhibit distinct light-intensity and frequency dependences. We apply the method to study polarization moments of 87Rb atoms contained in a vapor cell with antirelaxation coating. Distinct ultranarrow (1-Hz wide) resonances, corresponding to different multipoles, appear in the magnetic-field dependence of the optical rotation. The use of the highest-multipole resonances supported by a given system has important applications in quantum and nonlinear optics and in magnetometry.

RESUMO

The 34-kDa protein encoded by the I3 gene of vaccinia virus is expressed at early and intermediate times postinfection and is phosphorylated on serine residues. Recombinant I3 has been expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to near homogeneity, as has the protein from infected cells. Both recombinant and endogenous I3 protein demonstrate a striking affinity for single-stranded, but not for double-stranded, DNA. The interaction with DNA is resistant to salt, exhibits low cooperativity, and appears to involve a binding site of approximately 10 nucleotides. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicate that numerous I3 molecules can bind to a template, reflecting the stoichiometric interaction of I3 with DNA. Sequence analysis reveals that a pattern of aromatic and charged amino acids common to many replicative single-stranded DNA binding proteins (SSBs) is conserved in I3. The inability to isolate viable virus containing an interrupted I3 allele provides strong evidence that the I3 protein plays an essential role in the viral life cycle. A likely role for I3 as an SSB involved in DNA replication and/or repair is discussed.

A dihydropyridine-affinity column was prepared by coupling a physiologically active and vasoselective amino-derivative of felodipine to divinylsulfone-activated Trisacryl GF2000. Calmodulin (CaM) as well as the homologous calcium-binding proteins skeletal and cardiac Troponin C (sTnC and cTnC) and S100b bound to this resin in a calcium-dependent manner. In contrast, other homologous proteins such as parvalbumin and the intestinal calcium-binding protein did not bind. Competition studies showed that CaM had a higher affinity for the felodipine-column than sTnC or cTnC. Through studies with a series of proteolytic fragments of CaM and sTnC, it was found that the felodipine binding site is located in the amino-terminal domain of the protein. These results illustrate the utility of affinity-chromatography for the study of dihydropyridine-binding proteins.

RESUMO

Studies of filled and silent pauses performed in the last two decades are reviewed in order to determine the significance of pauses for the speaker. Following a brief history, the theoretical implications of pause location are examined and the relevant studies summarized. In addition, the functional significance of pauses is considered in terms of cognitive, affective-state, and social interaction variables.
