RESUMO
Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y transversal de 147 lactantes egresados con el diagnóstico de bronquiolitis aguda en el periodo comprendido desde el primero de septiembre hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2005. La mayoría de los pacientes debutaron antes de los tres meses de edad, eran del sexo masculino y de procedencia urbana. Se atendieron 45 pacientes complicados, siendo la bronconeumonía bacteriana la complicación más frecuente, seguida de las diarreas, insuficiencia respiratoria aguda con hipoxemia grave, cuatro de los cuales necesitaron ventilación mecánica. Un menor número de pacientes tuvo atelectasia, neumotórax, otitis media aguda e insuficiencia cardíaca. A retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study in 147 patients at the Respiratory Service at Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Teaching Pediatric Hospital from September to December 2005, was carried out. The majority of these patients were diagnosed within the three months of life. The most frequently clinical complications were bacterial bronchopneumonia, diarrhea, acute respiratory failure with severe hypoxemia and four of the patients needed mechanical ventilation. Some patients had atelectasis, pneumothorax, acute otitis media and cardiac insufficiency. Bronchiolitis was moderate or severe in patients with cardiopathy, premature and underweight. A significant part of them with severe bronchiolitis and initial eosinophilia had bronchial asthma. El costo total para el tratamiento de la enfermedad por concepto de hospitalización, medios diagnósticos y medicamentos es de $ 37936.29.
