BACKGROUND: Jaboticaba (Myrciaria trunciflora) belongs to the family Myrtaceae and is a fruit native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The aim of this study was evaluate the activity of the extract of jaboticaba against different stresses in Caenorhabditis elegans. METHODS: Initially, the toxicological profile of the extract was analyzed, evaluating survival, reproduction, and longevity. After the tests of resistance to oxidative stress, thermal and against ultraviolet radiation were carried out. In order to discover a signaling pathway involved in this process the DAF-16 pathway was analyzed. RESULTS: It was found that the extract has no toxicity and is still able to prolong longevity in concentrations of 50 and 100 µg of GAE/mL. It was able to protect against damage from the juglone, temperature and UV radiation. This effect is mediated by the activation of the translocation of the DAF-16 factor to the cell nucleus and subsequent activation of defense pathways. CONCLUSIONS: Together, it is possible to verify that the extract of jaboticaba is important for the protection of the damages to which were daily exposed, in order to decrease the free radicals and consequently the damages that lead to aging and/or the appearance of diseases.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) has been used in folk medicine to treat fertility disturbances, a claim that has been evidenced in some studies. However, the clinical trials validating this use have shown paradoxical findings and then maca safety is not well known. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms by which maca affects the reproductive system using an in vivo model, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Tuber maca powder, obtained from local commerce, was used to prepare the aqueous extract. Worms were acutely exposed to maca extracts (40, 120, 240, and 330 µg/µl), and 48 h after treatments, physiological and biochemical assays were conducted. Maca extract caused a significant decrease in total number of eggs and in the number of eggs per worm. These effects were associated to increased lipid peroxidation, reduced triacylglycerol levels, and also impaired vit-2 (vitellogenin) expression, besides increase in the number of apoptotic germline cells. We have found quantifiable levels of alkaloids in this maca extract, which presence could be related to this toxicity. Collectively, our data suggest that maca extract exposure causes reproductive toxicity to worms that could be, at least in part, associated to both an increase in apoptosis of germline cells and also to a decrease in vitellogenin expression, needed for egg yolk production and, consequently, successful reproduction.

The use of sunscreen is one of the photoprotection measures most used by the population, so these products must offer broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB radiation. Encholirium spectabile, popularly known as "macambira-de-flecha," is a species characterized by its rocky outcrops and found in the Caatinga. This biome is known for extreme droughts and dry periods, and for this reason, its vegetation needed to develop resistance mechanisms. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of E. spectabile incorporated in O/W emulsion as a potential photoprotective agent and their antioxidant activity. Four chemical constituents (ferulic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid and apigenin) were identified by HPLC-DAD analysis, and emulsions containing different concentrations (1%, 2.5% and 5%) of the extract without and with the addition of chemical filters (octyl methoxycinnamate and benzophenone-3) were prepared and submitted to the test of preliminary stability. The Q formulation demonstrated little variation in the preliminary stability test and was selected for estimated your protection against UVB and determination of in vitro protection factor UVA. The formulations remained stable during the freeze-thaw cycle; the extract despite maintaining the UVA-PF and decreasing the wavelength showed an increase in FPS from 14.4 (control) to 18.8 (control+ Es-HA80).

Methods: Pre- and post-transport quality control laboratory parameters, visual appearance, transport time and temperature of the packed red blood cells (RBCs), thawed fresh plasma (TFP), cryoprecipitate (CR), and platelet concentrate (PC) were evaluated. Parameters were compared between transport via pneumatic tube and courier. Results: A total of 23 units of RBCs, 50 units of TFP, 30 units of CR and ten units of PC were evaluated. No statistically significant differences were found between pre- and post-transport laboratory results. There was also no difference in laboratory parameters between transport modalities (PTS versus courier). All blood components transported matched regulatory requirements for quality criteria. The temperature during transport remained stable and the transport time via PTS was significantly shorter than the courier's transport time (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The PTS was considered a fast, safe and reliable means of transportation for blood components, also securing quality prerequisites.

Goji berry fruit is considered a healthy food. However, studies on its effects on aging and safety are rare. This study is the first to evaluate the effects of goji berry juice (GBJ) on oxidative stress, metabolic markers, and lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans. GBJ caused toxicity, reduced the lifespan of C. elegans by 50%, and increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by 45-50% at all tested concentrations (1-20 mg/µL) of GBJ. Moreover, the highest concentration of GBJ increased lipid peroxidation by 80% and altered the antioxidant enzymes. These effects could be attributed to a pro-oxidant effect induced by GBJ polyphenols and carotenoids. Moreover, GBJ increased lipofuscin, glucose levels, number of apoptotic bodies, and lipase activity. The use of mutant strains demonstrated that these effects observed in the worms treated with GBJ were not associated with the Daf-16/FOXO or SKN-1 pathways. Our findings revealed that GBJ (mainly the highest concentration) exerted toxic effects and promoted premature aging in C. elegans. Therefore, its consumption should be carefully considered until further studies in mammals are conducted.

Introdução: Sobreviventes do câncer de cavidade oral (SCCO) em controle normalmente apresentam inúmeras sequelas derivadas do tratamento oncológico, o que pode comprometer sua alimentação e, por extensão, o atendimento às diretrizes de alimentação e peso adequado emitidas pelo Fundo Mundial para Pesquisa do Câncer/Instituto Americano de Pesquisa para o Câncer (WCRF/AICR). Objetivo: Avaliar o perfil alimentar e o estado nutricional de sobreviventes de câncer de cavidade oral e verificar o grau de sua adesão, as diretrizes de alimentação saudável e peso corporal emitidas pela WCRF / AICR. Método: Estudo transversal que avaliou o estado nutricional pela Avaliação Subjetiva Global produzida pelo paciente (ASG-PPP) e índice de massa corporal (IMC) de 20 pacientes. Dados como condição social e histórico clínico foram coletados em prontuário. O consumo alimentar foi avaliado por meio de um diário alimentar de 30 dias. Os dados alimentares e o peso corporal receberam um escore de pontos conforme maior ou menor grau de adesão às recomendações WCRF / AICR. Resultados: 80% dos pacientes encontravam-se com desnutrição moderada ou suspeita de desnutrição pela ASG-PPP. Pelo IMC, 10% dos participantes estavam desnutridos, 45% eutróficos e 35% apresentavam sobrepeso. Foi encontrado escore médio 2,64 ±0.55 de adesão às recomendações de peso adequado e alimentação saudável, demonstrando atendimento de menos de 50% das recomendações WCRF / AICR. Conclusão: Os pacientes SCCO do presente estudo apresentam risco de desnutrição ou estão com desnutrição moderada; e possuem alta sintomatologia, que impacta negativamente na ingestão alimentar e na adesão às recomendações da WCRF / AICR. Introduction: Survivors of oral cavity cancer (OCC) under control usually have numerous sequelae resulting from oncological treatment, which can compromise their diet and, by extension, meet the guidelines for diet and proper weight issued by the World Cancer Research Fund International-WCRF and the American Institute for Cancer Research-AICR. Objective: To evaluate the dietary profile and nutritional status of oral cancer survivors and verify the degree of their adherence, the guidelines for healthy eating and body weight issued by WCRF/AICR. Method: Cross-sectional study which assessed the nutritional status by the Subjective Global Assessment produced by the patient (PG-SGA) and body mass index (BMI) of 20 patients. Data such as social condition and clinical history were collected from medical records. Food consumption was assessed using a 30-day food diary. Food data and body weight received a score of points according to a greater or lesser degree of adherence to WCRF/AICR recommendations. Results: 80% of patients were moderately malnourished or suspected of malnutrition by PG-SGA. According to BMI 10% of participants were malnourished, 45% eutrophic and 35% were overweight. An average score of 2.64 ± 0.55 adherence to the recommendations of adequate weight and healthy eating was found, showing compliance with less than 50% of the WCRF/AICR recommendations. Conclusion: Survivor patients of OCC patients from the present study are at risk of malnutrition or have moderate malnutrition; and have high symptomology, which negatively impacts food intake and adherence to recommendations of WCRF/AICR. Plants are widely used in folk medicine because of their pharmacological properties. Ceiba speciosa, popularly known as paineira-rosa or tree-of-wool, is a species found in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, being native of the upper Uruguay River, Brazil. The tea obtained from the stem bark is employed in folk medicine to reduce cholesterol, triacylglycerides, and glucose levels. However, there are no studies in the literature proving its efficacy or the safety of its use. For this study, we used Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model considering its advantages for risk assessment and pharmacological screenings. For the toxicological tests, C. elegans N2 (wild type) was treated with the aqueous extract of the stem bark of C. speciosa (ECE) at the first larval stage (L1) at concentrations of 5, 25, 50, and 250 µg/mL. To evaluate biological activities, we challenged the extract for oxidative stress resistance in the presence of paraquat (0.5 mM), H2O2 (1 mM), and against glucose-induced toxicity. Our results demonstrated that ECE did not alter survival rate, pharyngeal pumping, and reproduction of the nematodes. The extract was not able to protect the nematodes against the toxicity induced by prooxidants. Notably, ECE protected against glucotoxicity by increasing worms' life span and by reducing glucose levels. On the other hand, ECE treatment did not reduce lipid accumulation induced by exogenous glucose feeding, as observed in worms which lipid droplets were tagged with GFP. Based on our results, we believe that the extract is indeed promising for further studies focusing on carbohydrates metabolism; however, it needs to be carefully evaluated since the extract does not seem to modulate lipid accumulation.

Butiá (Butia eriospatha) is a fruit of a palm tree belonging to the family Arecaceae, native to South America. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of butiá extract using Caenorhabditis elegans as animal model. Initially, we performed survival experiments, reproduction, resistance to oxidative stress (post or pre-treatment with paraquat or hydrogen peroxide), longevity, superoxide dismutase, and catalase GFP reporters' expression. We observed that butiá extract did not affect the worms' survival. Similarly, egg laying also showed no significant difference between treatments. None of the extract concentrations tested was able to significantly protect or reverse paraquat-induced oxidative stress. However, they were able to reverse the oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide. In addition, butiá extract increased C. elegans lifespan under stress and not per se. Our results demonstrate that the Butiá is able to extend the lifespan of the nematode C. elegans and that this effect may be mediated by an induced resistance to oxidative stress. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The practical applications of this research are to expand and bring scientific knowledge to the population about the benefits of the consumption of this native fruit from the southern region of Brazil. Many fruits and other plant foods are consumed and spread with benefits without proper scientific proof of these benefits. This fruit is widely cultivated and its production and consumption can be expanded from these results. Still, we point out that this is the first time that the benefits of this fruit are studied.

Organic selenium compounds have several pharmacological activities already described, as anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities, which have been attributed to their antioxidant effects. Because they are promising in pharmacology, the synthesis of these compounds has increased significantly. As many new molecules are synthesized the use of a simple model like Caenorhabditis elegans is highly advantageous for initial evaluation of the toxicity and therapeutic potential of these molecules. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity and antioxidant capacity of a series of selenotriazoles compounds in C. elegans. The animals were exposed to the compounds in liquid medium for only 30 min at the first larval stage (L1). The compounds had no toxic effects at the concentrations tested. Treatment with selenotriazoles (10 µM) partially reversed the stress induced by the pesticide paraquat (1 mM). Se-Tz Ia compound partially increased the survival of worms treated with H2O2 (0.5 mM). The compounds also increased the longevity of mev-1 mutants, which have a reduced life span by the production of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria caused by a mutation in complex II of the electron transport chain. In addition, the compounds reduced the levels of ROS determined by the fluorescent probe DCF-DA as well as also reduced catalase enzyme activity in these animals. Based on the results found, it is possible to conclude that the compounds have antioxidant activity mainly in oxidative stress condition generated by a mitochondrial dysfunction in C. elegans.

BACKGROUND: Salvia hispanica seeds have been commonly used by people that seek healthy habits through natural foods to reduce cholesterol and triacylglycerides levels, however, the evidences that support this assumption are still scarce in literature. Here, we aimed to evaluate the lipid lowering effects of chia by using Caenorhabditis elegans as animal model, a nematode that has proven its usefulness for lipid metabolism studies. METHODS: We prepared hexane (HE) and Bligh-Dyer (BDE) extracts, evaluated and compared their safety, antioxidant potential and their lipid-lowering activity in the worms. RESULTS: The characterization of both extracts demonstrated that there were no differences in their lipid composition; however, BDE depicted better antioxidant potential. Both extracts reduced worm's survival from 2%, and reproduction was reduced following treatment with both extracts, though a more notable effect was observed in HE-treated worms. In addition, the non-toxic concentration of both extracts (1%) increased stress resistance against paraquat toxicity in an antidote paradigm. Notably, this same concentration of both extracts reduced lipid accumulation in obese worms, which was not caused by food deprivation. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our data demonstrate that both extraction methods from chia seeds result in oils that are rich in mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which may modulate lipid accumulation and provide antioxidant resistance in C. elegans.

Pitanga, a fruit of the pitangueira tree (Eugenia uniflora L.), is native to Brazil and has a high antioxidant capacity due to the elevated amount of anthocyanins. The present study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of the purple pitanga fruit and to evaluate its antioxidant effect in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. We observed that the ethanolic extract of purple pitanga did not cause any toxic effects but notably increased worm lifespan. The extract improved the survival, reproduction and lifespan of the worms in pre- and post-exposure to stressors H2O2 and juglone, as well as improved the lifespan of the oxidative stress hypersensitive strain mev-1. Notably, PPE extract decreased reactive oxygen species by DCF-DA probe and protein carbonyl content from worms stressed with H2O2. The extract also affected the expression of superoxide dismutase SOD-3 and heat shock protein HSP-16.2 levels, daf 16 target genes that modulate lifespan and antioxidant metabolism. In addition, we demonstrate that these effects are dependent on DAF-16, as PPE extract did not provide protection in daf-16 mutants. Therefore, these results suggest that PPE significantly protected against oxidative stress modulating daf-16 target genes.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze patients after cardiac surgery that needed endotracheal reintubation and identify factors associated with death and its relation with the severity scores. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of information of 1,640 patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery between 2007 and 2015. RESULTS: The reintubation rate was 7.26%. Of those who were reintubated, 36 (30.3%) underwent coronary artery bypass surgery, 27 (22.7%) underwent valve replacement, 25 (21.0%) underwent correction of an aneurysm, and 8 (6.7%) underwent a heart transplant. Among those with comorbidities, 54 (51.9%) were hypertensive, 22 (21.2%) were diabetic, and 10 (9.6%) had lung diseases. Among those who had complications, 61 (52.6%) had pneumonia, 50 (42.4%) developed renal failure, and 49 (51.0%) had a moderate form of the transient disturbance of gas exchange. Noninvasive ventilation was performed in 53 (44.5%) patients. The death rate was 40.3%, and mortality was higher in the group that did not receive noninvasive ventilation before reintubation (53.5%). Within the reintubated patients who died, the SOFA and APACHE II values were 7.9 ± 3.0 and 16.9 ± 4.5, respectively. Most of the reintubated patients (47.5%) belonged to the high-risk group, EuroSCORE (> 6 points). CONCLUSION: The reintubation rate was high, and it was related to worse SOFA, APACHE II and EuroSCORE scores. Mortality was higher in the group that did not receive noninvasive ventilation before reintubation.


OBJETIVO: Analisar pacientes em pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca que necessitaram de reintubação endotraqueal, e identificar os fatores associados com óbito e seu relacionamento com escores de severidade. MÉTODOS: Análise retrospectiva de informações referentes a 1.640 pacientes em pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca no período entre 2007 e 2015. RESULTADOS: A taxa de reintubação foi de 7,26%. Dentre os pacientes reintubados, 36 (30,3%) foram submetidos à cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica, 27 (22,7%) à substituição valvar, 25 (21,0%) à correção de um aneurisma e oito (6,7%) a um transplante cardíaco. Dentre os pacientes com comorbidades, 54 (51,9%) eram hipertensos, 22 (21,2%) diabéticos e 10 (9,6%) tinham doença pulmonar. Dentre os pacientes que tiveram complicações, 61 (52,6%) tiveram pneumonia, 50 (42,4%) desenvolveram insuficiência renal e 49 (51,0%) tiveram uma forma moderada de distúrbio transitório da troca gasosa. Foi realizada ventilação não invasiva em 53 (44,5%) pacientes. A taxa de óbitos foi de 40,3%, e a mortalidade foi mais elevada no grupo que não recebeu ventilação não invasiva antes da reintubação (53,5%). Dentre os pacientes reintubados que morreram, os valores do SOFA e do APACHE II foram, respectivamente, de 7,9 ± 3,0 e 16,9 ± 4,5. A maior parte dos pacientes reintubados (47,5%) pertencia ao grupo de risco mais elevado (EuroSCORE > 6 pontos). CONCLUSÃO: A taxa de reintubação foi elevada e se relacionou com o SOFA e o APACHE II mais graves. A mortalidade foi mais elevada no grupo que não recebeu ventilação não invasiva antes da reintubação.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar pacientes em pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca que necessitaram de reintubação endotraqueal, e identificar os fatores associados com óbito e seu relacionamento com escores de severidade. Métodos: Análise retrospectiva de informações referentes a 1.640 pacientes em pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca no período entre 2007 e 2015. Resultados: A taxa de reintubação foi de 7,26%. Dentre os pacientes reintubados, 36 (30,3%) foram submetidos à cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica, 27 (22,7%) à substituição valvar, 25 (21,0%) à correção de um aneurisma e oito (6,7%) a um transplante cardíaco. Dentre os pacientes com comorbidades, 54 (51,9%) eram hipertensos, 22 (21,2%) diabéticos e 10 (9,6%) tinham doença pulmonar. Dentre os pacientes que tiveram complicações, 61 (52,6%) tiveram pneumonia, 50 (42,4%) desenvolveram insuficiência renal e 49 (51,0%) tiveram uma forma moderada de distúrbio transitório da troca gasosa. Foi realizada ventilação não invasiva em 53 (44,5%) pacientes. A taxa de óbitos foi de 40,3%, e a mortalidade foi mais elevada no grupo que não recebeu ventilação não invasiva antes da reintubação (53,5%). Dentre os pacientes reintubados que morreram, os valores do SOFA e do APACHE II foram, respectivamente, de 7,9 ± 3,0 e 16,9 ± 4,5. ABSTRACT Objectives: To analyze patients after cardiac surgery that needed endotracheal reintubation and identify factors associated with death and its relation with the severity scores. Methods: Retrospective analysis of information of 1,640 patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery between 2007 and 2015. Results: The reintubation rate was 7.26%. Of those who were reintubated, 36 (30.3%) underwent coronary artery bypass surgery, 27 (22.7%) underwent valve replacement, 25 (21.0%) underwent correction of an aneurysm, and 8 (6.7%) underwent a heart transplant. Among those with comorbidities, 54 (51.9%) were hypertensive, 22 (21.2%) were diabetic, and 10 (9.6%) had lung diseases. Among those who had complications, 61 (52.6%) had pneumonia, 50 (42.4%) developed renal failure, and 49 (51.0%) had a moderate form of the transient disturbance of gas exchange. Noninvasive ventilation was performed in 53 (44.5%) patients. The death rate was 40.3%, and mortality was higher in the group that did not receive noninvasive ventilation before reintubation (53.5%). Within the reintubated patients who died, the SOFA and APACHE II values were 7.9 ± 3.0 and 16.9 ± 4.5, respectively. Most of the reintubated patients (47.5%) belonged to the high-risk group, EuroSCORE (> 6 points). Conclusion: The reintubation rate was high, and it was related to worse SOFA, APACHE II and EuroSCORE scores. Mortality was higher in the group that did not receive noninvasive ventilation before reintubation.

The current study aimed to evaluate the bending resistance and the cyclic fatigue life of a new heat-treated reciprocating instrument (ProDesign R). Untreated ProDesign R, Reciproc R25, and WaveOne Primary instruments were used as reference instruments for comparison. The bending resistance was performed in ten instruments of each system by using a universal testing machine and a proper apparatus. The cyclic fatigue resistance was tested measuring the number of cycles to failure in an artificial stainless steel canal. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to determine the mode of fracture and possible deformations at the helical shaft. Statistical analysis was performed by using parametric methods; one-way analysis of variance plus post hoc pair-wise Tukey test for multiple comparisons (p < 0.05). Untreated ProDesign R presented significantly higher bending resistance than the other tested systems (p < 0.05). No differences were observed between ProDesign R and Reciproc files regarding the bending resistance (p > 0.05). Moreover, ProDesign R revealed a significantly longer cyclic fatigue life (p < 0.05). In contrast, Untreated ProDesign R and WaveOne instruments presented significantly lower cyclic fatigue life than Reciproc (p < 0.05). The new heat-treated reciprocating instrument ProDesign R have higher cyclic fatigue resistance than Untreated ProDesign R, Reciproc, and WaveOne instruments. OBJECTIVE: A retrospective cohort study was preformed aiming to verify the presence of transient dysfunction of gas exchange in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery and determine if this disorder is linked to cardiorespiratory events. METHODS: We included 942 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery and cardiac procedures who were referred to the Intensive Care Unit between June 2007 and November 2011. RESULTS: Fifteen patients had acute respiratory distress syndrome (2%), 199 (27.75%) had mild transient dysfunction of gas exchange, 402 (56.1%) had moderate transient dysfunction of gas exchange, and 39 (5.4%) had severe transient dysfunction of gas exchange. Hypertension and cardiogenic shock were associated with the emergence of moderate transient dysfunction of gas exchange postoperatively (P=0.02 and P=0.019, respectively) and were risk factors for this dysfunction (P=0.0023 and P=0.0017, respectively). Diabetes mellitus was also a risk factor for transient dysfunction of gas exchange (P=0.03). Pneumonia was present in 8.9% of cases and correlated with the presence of moderate transient dysfunction of gas exchange (P=0.001). Severe transient dysfunction of gas exchange was associated with patients who had renal replacement therapy (P=0.0005), hemotherapy (P=0.0001), enteral nutrition (P=0.0012), or cardiac arrhythmia (P=0.0451). CONCLUSION: Preoperative hypertension and cardiogenic shock were associated with the occurrence of postoperative transient dysfunction of gas exchange. The preoperative risk factors included hypertension, cardiogenic shock, and diabetes. Postoperatively, pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, renal replacement therapy, hemotherapy, and cardiac arrhythmia were associated with the appearance of some degree of transient dysfunction of gas exchange, which was a risk factor for reintubation, pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and renal replacement therapy in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery and cardiac procedures.

Objetivo: Estudo de coorte retrospectivo com objetivo de verificar a presença de disfunção transitória da troca gasosa no pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca e determinar se esse transtorno está relacionado a eventos cardiorrespiratórios. Métodos: Foram incluídos 942 pacientes consecutivos submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca e procedimentos cardíacos, encaminhados para a Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, entre junho de 2007 e novembro de 2011. Resultados: A síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo foi observada em 15 (2%) pacientes, 199 (27,75%) pacientes apresentaram disfunção transitória da troca gasosa leve, disfunção transitória da troca gasosa moderada foi observada em 402 (56,1%) pacientes e disfunção transitória da troca gasosa grave em 39 (5,4%). A presença de hipertensão arterial sistêmica e choque cardiogênico foi associada ao surgimento de disfunção transitória da troca gasosa moderada no período pós-operatório (P=0,02 e P=0,019, respectivamente) e foram considerados fatores de risco para essa disfunção (P=0,0023 e P=0,0017, respectivamente). A presença de diabetes mellitus também foi considerada um fator de risco para disfunção transitória da troca gasosa (P=0,03). Houve correlação entre a presença de pneumonia e a presença de disfunção transitória da troca gasosa moderada em 8,9% dos casos (P=0,001). Crianças que apresentam insuficiência hepática e transplante de fígado tem uma condição sistêmica comprometida. Algumas alterações bucais podem ocorrer nessas crianças, inclusive hiperplasia gengival. OBJETIVO: Utilizar um gel de clorexidina para controlar e minimizar a hiperplasia gengival ocasionada pelo uso de ciclosporina associada a corticosteróide. RELATO DO CASO: Em uma criança de 2 anos e 8 meses, submetida a transplante de fígado com prescrição de ciclosporina associada à corticosteróide, que apresentava hiperplasia gengival em que a opção de remoção cirúrgica do aumento gengival não foi autorizada, foi aplicado gel inibidor de placa clorexidina, uma vez por semana durante quatro semanas. CONSIDERAÇÕES FINAIS: O gel de clorexidina mostrou-se eficaz como auxiliar na terapêutica de impedir a hiperplasia gengival...


Oroantral communication is a pathological communication that occurs between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. When this communication suffers epithelialization it is called oroantral fistula. It can occur mainly after extraction of posterior maxillary teeth, due to the close relationship between their roots and the maxillary sinus floor. Aim: To present the surgical options for the treatment of oroantral communication and report a case of a large oroantral fistula, explaining the technique step. Case Report: Female patient female, 37-year-old, presented bucossinusal fistula in the left upper molars area and was surgically treated for its closure. Under local anesthesia an incision was made around the fistula, cutting epithelial tissue to allow the union of the wound edges, and it was sutured by layers: initially sinus mucosa with 4-0 catgut and then the gums, with nylon. The suture was removed 10 days later and by this time the complete closure of the fistula was observed. Conclusion: The decision of which treatment modality to use for oroantral communication is influenced by many factors, such as its size, the tissue conditions and the surgeon’s skills. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The amount of data collected previously for Velloziaceae neither clarified relationships within the family nor helped determine an appropriate classification, which has led to huge discordance among treatment by different authors. To achieve an acceptable phylogenetic result and understand the evolution and roles of characters in supporting groups, a total evidence analysis was developed which included approx. 20 % of the species and all recognized genera and sections of Velloziaceae, plus outgroups representatives of related families within Pandanales. METHODS: Analyses were undertaken with 48 species of Velloziaceae, representing all ten genera, with DNA sequences from the atpB-rbcL spacer, trnL-trnF spacer, trnL intron, trnH-psbA spacer, ITS ribosomal DNA spacers and morphology. KEY RESULTS: Four groups consistently emerge from the analyses. Persistent leaves, two phloem strands, stem cortex divided in three regions and violet tepals support Acanthochlamys as sister to Velloziaceae s.s., which are supported mainly by leaves with marginal bundles, transfusion tracheids and inflorescence without axis. Within Velloziaceae s.s., an African Xerophyta + Talbotia clade is uniquely supported by basal loculicidal capsules; an American clade, Barbacenia s.l. + Barbaceniopsis + Nanuza + Vellozia, is supported by only homoplastic characters. Barbacenia s.l. (= Aylthonia + Barbacenia + Burlemarxia + Pleurostima) is supported by a double sheath in leaf vascular bundles and a corona; Barbaceniopsis + Nanuza + Vellozia is not supported by an unambiguous character, but Barbaceniopsis is supported by five characters, including diclinous flowers, Nanuza + Vellozia is supported mainly by horizontal stigma lobes and stem inner cortex cells with secondary walls, and Vellozia alone is supported mainly by pollen in tetrads. CONCLUSIONS: The results imply recognition of five genera (Acanthochlamys (Xerophyta (Barbacenia (Barbaceniopsis, Vellozia)))), solving the long-standing controversies among recent classifications of the family. They also suggest a Gondwanan origin for Velloziaceae, with a vicariant pattern of distribution.

Avaliar a articulação temporomandibular (ATM) e a função respiratória no pré e pós-operatório de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca eletiva, com intubação orotraqueal (IOT) e verificar se há correlação entre o índice de disfunção clínica craniomandibular (IDCCM) com a função respiratória. Foram avaliados pacientes no pré, primeiro e segundo dias de pós-operatório (PO1, PO2) de cirurgia cardíaca com até 24 horas IOT. Na avaliação da ATM foi utilizado o IDCCM e para a avaliação respiratória foram utilizados a cirtometria axilar, xifoideana e umbilical, ventilometria, incluindo capacidade vital (CV), volume minuto (VM) e frequência respiratória (FR). Completaram o estudo 13 pacientes. Não foi encontrada diferença estatística entre o IDCCM nos diferentes períodos de avaliação. Houve diminuição significativa dos valores de cirtometria nas três medidas e da CV com p<0, 001. A FR apresentou aumento significativo, com p=0,01. Foi encontrada correlação negativa entre o IDCCM no PO1 e a cirtometria axilar no PO1; correlação negativa entre o IDCCM no PO2 e a cirtometria xifoideana no PO2, e correlação positiva entre o IDCCM no PO2 e FR no PO2. Pode-se concluir que o IDCCM não se alterou significativamente após intubação orotraqueal ao longo dos tempos estudados. A função respiratória apresentou diminuição dos volumes e capacidades pulmonares. A cirtometria axilar e xifoideana, assim como a FR apresentaram correlação com o IDCCM em diferentes tempos.


To evaluate the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and respiratory function in pre-and postoperative patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery with tracheal intubation (TI) and verifying the correlation between Clinical dysfunction index (CDI) with lung function. Patients were evaluated during the first and second days after surgery (PO1, PO2) of cardiac surgery with 24 hours of intubation. For the evaluation of the TMJ was used CDI and for respiratory function were used cirtometry axillary, xiphoid and umbilical, and respirometry, including vital capacity (VC), minute volume (MV) and respiratory rate (RR). Thirteen patients completed the study. There was no statistical difference between the CDI at different stages of evaluation, and when evaluated the 5 sub-items, only the item assessing function showed significant result, p = 0.01. There was a significant decrease of the values of circumferences in the three measures and CV p <0.001. Negative correlation was found between the CDI and circumference in PO1 axillary; negative correlation between the CDI in PO2 and PO2 in xifoideana circumference, and a positive correlation between the CDI in PO2 and PO2 in the FR. It can be concluded that the CDI did not change significantly after tracheal intubation through the ages studied. Respiratory function showed a decrease in volumes and lung capacities. Cirtometry axillary and xifoideana and the FR were correlated with the CDI at different times.
