RESUMO

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) prognosis is disappointing, with current treatment strategies being based on a "fit for all" principle and not taking distinct sarcoma subtypes specificities and genetic/metabolic differences into consideration. The paucity of precision therapies in STS reflects the shortage of studies that seek to decipher the sarcomagenesis mechanisms. There is an urge to improve STS diagnosis precision, refine STS classification criteria, and increase the capability of identifying STS prognostic biomarkers. Single-omics and multi-omics studies may play a key role on decodifying sarcomagenesis. Metabolomics provides a singular insight, either as a single-omics approach or as part of a multi-omics strategy, into the metabolic adaptations that support sarcomagenesis. Although STS metabolome is scarcely characterized, untargeted and targeted metabolomics approaches employing different data acquisition methods such as mass spectrometry (MS), MS imaging, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provided important information, warranting further studies. New chromatographic, MS, NMR-based, and flow cytometry-based methods will offer opportunities to therapeutically target metabolic pathways and to monitorize the response to such metabolic targeting therapies. Here we provide a comprehensive review of STS omics applications, comprising a detailed analysis of studies focused on the metabolic landscape of these tumors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the predictability, through the analysis of the medical records, the risk factors and the acquiring of osseointegration of dental implants installed in maxillary sinuses submitted to grafting, by using, as the only graft material, the bovine inorganic matrix Geistlich Bio-Oss®ï¸, Geistlich Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland). From 45 records of patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral maxillary sinus elevation operation, data from 116 implants installed in 60 grafted maxillary sinuses were analyzed. The attainment of osseointegration and the possible influence of the variables gender, age, smoking, the occurrence of intraoperative perforation of the sinus mucosa, the waiting time between the grafting and the installation of the implants, diameter, length, and primary stability obtained of the installed implants were analyzed. The data collected were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis using Pearson's chi-squared (x²) test. The results obtained showed osseointegration in 97,78% (n=113) of the evaluated implant. The length was the only parameter that showed statistical significance in the sample. Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that the installation of implants osseointegrated in maxillary sinuses grafted with isolated bovine inorganic matrix has high predictability of obtaining osseointegration and that the length of the installed implants is the only statistically significant factor to its obtainment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: According to some authors, the indication of an arthroplasty maintaining the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) demands adequate structural preservation and proprioceptive function of this ligament. The nervous fibers contained in the synovial neurovascular bundle (NVB) around the PCL are involved in proprioception. A study evaluating the grade of PCL and NVB degeneration by using clinical, radiological, and perioperative parameters in knee arthritis patients, in theory, could help surgeons in the decision of preserving or not preserving the PCL in a particular patient. QUESTIONS: (1) Can the degree of the PCL collagen fibers degeneration be predicted by clinical, radiographic, and perioperative parameters in knee arthritis patients? (2) Is the NVB histological degeneration status predictable using clinical, radiographic, and perioperative parameters in the same subset of patients? (3) Is there a correlation between the degree of the PCL collagen fibers degeneration and NVB status in knee arthritis patients? METHODS: Eighty-nine PCLs (85 patients) obtained from total knee replacement surgery were studied. The histologic degeneration of PCL collagen fibers and the NVB status (preserved, degenerated, not detected) were evaluated. These histological degeneration patterns were correlated with clinical and radiographic parameters and with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) status. RESULTS: A small prevalence of preserved NVB was related to Grades IV and V of Ahlbäck's classification, ACL absence, and severe PCL degeneration. The clinical and radiological parameters studied were not able to predict the grade of histological degeneration of the PCL. CONCLUSIONS: Ahlbäck's classification and ACL status provided useful information about NVB integrity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Basic Science Level IV.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Many authors recommend posterior cruciate ligament-retaining arthroplasty with the intention to maintain the proprioception properties of this ligament. Preservation of the neuroreceptors and nervous fibers may be essential for retaining the proprioception function of the posterior cruciate ligament. The present study was thus developed to evaluate the presence of neural structures in the posterior cruciate ligament resected during posterior stabilized arthroplasty in osteoarthritis patients. In particular, clinical, radiographic and histological parameters were correlated with the presence or absence of neural structures in the posterior cruciate ligament. METHODS: In total, 34 posterior cruciate ligament specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Gomori trichrome. An immunohistochemical analysis using antibodies against the S100 protein and neurofilaments was also performed. The presence of neural structures was correlated with parameters such as tibiofemoral angulation, histological degeneration of the posterior cruciate ligament, Ahlbäck radiological classification, age, gender and the histologic pattern of the synovial neurovascular bundle around the posterior cruciate ligament. RESULTS: In total, 67.5% of the cases presented neural structures in the posterior cruciate ligament. In 65% of the cases, the neurovascular bundle was degenerated. Nervous structures were more commonly detected in varus knees than in valgus knees (77% versus 50%). Additionally, severe histologic degeneration of the posterior cruciate ligament was related to neurovascular bundle degeneration. CONCLUSIONS: Severe posterior cruciate ligament degeneration was related to neurovascular bundle compromise. Neural structures were more commonly detected in varus knees. Intrinsic neural structures were detected in the majority of the posterior cruciate ligaments of patients submitted to knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis.

The pequi oil has red-orange color due to carotenoids content. Possible chemical modifications on these compounds during processing may influence physical modifications to the product when this oil is submitted to heating. This study aimed to use kinetic parameters to evaluate carotenoids degradation and color change of the pequi oil submitted to heating at frying temperature. To evaluate the effect of heating, pequi oil was heated at 180°C in 10 minutes increasing intervals until one hour. Analyses were performed for total carotenoids and color and these results were used to determine kinetic parameters. Along the heating the carotenoids content was almost completed degraded and consequently, the color changed significantly. Kinetics of carotenoids degradation was of first order and the color change was of zero order. These kinetics reflected the visual observations of pequi oil samples obtained after each treatment.

The article compares the roles that literary critic Moysés Vellinho and author Érico Veríssimo played in affirming intellectual legitimacy in a period when the Brazilian cultural context was marked by the notion of 'province-nation,' focusing on 1930 to 1964. These two figures were chosen because they were protagonists on both the regional and national cultural stages during this time. The meaning of their texts is examined against the backdrop of the social space that produced them: a society that was witnessing both the institutionalization of the university and the start of specialization within the humanities, as well as the expansion of the literature market and the re-interpretation of Rio Grande do Sul regionalism.
