OBJECTIVE: To identify whether tessellated fundus unrelated to myopia modifies the rate of diabetic patients with retinopathy. METHOD: Diabetic patients evaluated ophthalmoscopically for the first time from September 1998 to December 1999 were retrospectively reviewed, and the presence of diabetic retinopathy was compared with those with tessellated fundus (group 1) and without (group 2). Duration of diabetes and presence of retinopathy were evaluated. Differences were analysed with x2. RESULTS: 621 patients were evaluated, 138 of whom (22%) had tessellated fundus. The rate of patients with diabetic retinopathy was statistically lower in group 1 than in group 2 (p = 0.00); this difference was maintained after correction for cumulated diabetes duration. DISCUSSION: The presence of tessellated fundus was associated with a lower rate of patients with diabetic retinopathy and with delayed onset. Manifestations of diabetic retinopathy in patients with tessellated fundus might have a different expression, and this expression might not necessarily reflect the microvascular status of the patient.

Corneal autotransplantation is a process in practice for various years. This procedure has the advantage of providing corneal tissue which will not be immunologically rejected in the host. This paper reports five cases in which this procedure was undertaken by changing a transparent cornea from a blind eye on the other side.

Traditionally intraocular ophthalmologic surgery has been performed on hospitalized patients. Nevertheless, surgical advances now allow ambulatory management with the same effectiveness. This communication about our experience with outpatient intraocular surgery shows that there were no complications but several advantages among which is mentioned the optimal use of the hospital facilities, mainly for those patients whose serious condition require hospitalization.

Se hizo un estudio doble ciego en veinticuatro pacientes con diagnostico de conjuntivitis primaveral. Se separaron en forma oleatoria en dos grupos. A los de un grupo se administro solucion oftalmica de cromoglicato disodico al cuatro por ciento en los dos ojos durante catorce dias, y a los del otro se les administro placebo durante el mismo tiempo. Todos los pacientes presentaban actividad del proceso inflamatorio conjuntival al iniciarse el estudio.En los casos del grupo tratado con cromoglicato hubo una clara mejoria clinica en comparacion con los del grupo testigo, asi como disminucion de la IgE serica y desaparicion de los eosinofilos conjuntivales.Se concluye que para el tratamiento de la conjuntivitis primaveral el cromoglicato disodico debe emplearse en aplicacion local para prevenir las recaidas. Lo anterior hace posible evitar el uso frecuente y prolongado de corticoesteroides, agentes tradicionales de tratamiento de este padecimiento, con todos sus inconvenientes

A 13 year-old-boy with poliarticular seronegative juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and bilateral scleromalacia perforans is described. Ocular lesions were thought to be seconadry to vasculitis. Improvement was obtained with systemic and local corticosteroid therapy, and with subconjunctival auto-graft of fascia lata. This is the first report in the literature about scleromalacia perforans in JRA.
