RESUMO

The effect of 17 beta-estradiol 3-benzoate (10 micrograms.01 ml of sunflower oil-1 x 100 g body wt-1) on the temporal pattern of exercise-induced tissue glycogen depletion and tissue lipid availability during submaximal treadmill running was determined in male rats. Animal were administered estradiol or oil for 5 days and were then time matched for motorized treadmill running for 30, 60, 90, or 120 min. Significant depletion of liver, soleus muscle, and red and white vastus lateralis muscle tissue glycogen occurred in oil-administered animals run between 30 and 120 min. The greatest extent of tissue glycogen depletion occurred during the first 30 min of exercise with the rate of glycogen depletion slowing between 30 and 120 min of exercise. Administration of estradiol attenuated the temporal pattern of glycogen depletion in both liver and muscle tissues. Significant depletion of red and white vastus glycogen of estradiol-administered animals did not occur until 90 and 120 min of exercise, respectively. Administration of estradiol significantly increased resting plasma free fatty acids and red and white vastus triacylglycerol content. These data indicate that estradiol administration for 5 days resulted in significant glycogen sparing of liver and muscle tissues during submaximal treadmill running for up to 120 min by altering the temporal pattern of glycogen depletion of male rats secondary to an estradiol-mediated increase in availability of lipid substrate during exercise.

RESUMO

Three cases of temporomandibular joint disc replacement with a polymer glenoid fossa prosthesis, followed by rapid condylar degeneration, are reported. The relationship between this degeneration and a consistent foreign body reaction to fragments caused by implant wear is postulated.

RESUMO

Twenty-one patients with Crohn's disease have been studied with respect to caries activity and, when compared to two separate age-matched control groups, have evidenced a significantly greater number of decayed, missing, or filled teeth. Potential contributing factors, such as saliva constituents, oral hygiene, and diet, are discussed and implications for further research are presented.

RESUMO

A group of anticoagulated patients undergoing general dental procedures was monitored for assessment of postoperative hemorrhagic complications. The anticoagulant regimen was not altered, but patients were checked by prothrombin time laboratory tests immediately prior to dental visits to assure that each patient was below the maximum therapeutic level of anticoagulation. Patients were monitored following seventy-four separate visits, which included eighty-five procedures. All episodes of hemorrhage were easily controlled locally without complication.

RESUMO

A pilot project was undertaken to assess the feasibility of providing dental care for the mentally handicapped patient on an outpatient basis. The advantages, both immediate and long-term, to patients and practitioners are discussed.

RESUMO

Hornblende deformation twins with twin planes parallel to ( 101) are produced experimentally in single crystals by compression parallel to the c axis. Twinning occurs at confining pressures from 5 to 15 kilobars and temperatures from 400 degrees to 600 degrees C (strain rate, 10(-5) per second).

RESUMO

The emittance of well-sized corundum powders in the range between 1-30 micro has been measured by ir interferometry in the 7.5-25 micro region of the spectrum (400-1300 cm(-1)). The spectral features persist for all particle sizes with some interesting relative intensity variations. The temperature of the radiating surface is determined by setting the emittance equal to unity at 1035 cm(-1). At this point it is known that both orientations of corundum have a refractive index close to unity and the absorption coefficient is quite small. Thus both the volume and the surface reflectance terms are negligible and hence the emittance is approx. 1. The same powders have been measured in reflectance using a Cary-White spectrometer. A quantitative comparison is made between the two techniques and Kirchhoff's law is shown to apply experimentally.

RESUMO

The recently reported Pronounced decrease in shear strength of serpentine-bearing rocks at 30 to 40 kilobars in the temperature range 300 degrees to 520 degrees C may be attributed to the transformation of serpentine to a Pressure-dependent, 10-angstrom,2: 1 layer silicate plus brucite and periclase. This reaction increases density by about 8.5 percent.

RESUMO

A shear press has been used to determine the mechanical behavior of serpentinized dunite and forsterite at normal pressures to 50 kilobars, temperatures to 900 degrees C; and strain rates from 10(-1) to 10(-4) per second. The shear strength of dunite, containing less than 5 percent by volume of serpentine, is reduced by at least 30 percent as the temperature is raised from 300 degrees to 520 degrees C. Abundant kink bands develop at normal pressures above 35 kilobars at 27 degrees C and at lower pressures as the temperature is increased.
