To translate the the Utah Photophobia Symptom Impact Scale-12 questionnaire into Persian and assess the psychometric aspects to check its validity and reliability based on the Rasch modelling method. Translation and cultural adjustment of the English language UPSIS-12 questionnaire to Persian was undertaken. A total of 61 patients with complaints of photophobia participated in evaluating validity and reliability aspects. All the participants were asked to complete the Persian translation of the UPSIS-12 questionnaire. Rasch analyses of the survey items were conducted using WINSTEPS. All items fit the Rasch model. Point-measure correlation values varied from 0.41 to 0.77, providing a preliminary indication of adequate construct validity. All factor loadings were found more than 0.4. All items obtained infit and outfit mean square (MnSq) values of < 2.0. All participants except 5 had normal outfit values. Patients' abilities relative to the items' difficulty were analysed. Item difficulty was estimated and item characteristic curves were included. Sufficient unidimensionality, hierarchical order, and equal interval scoring were obtained. In conclusion, the Persian UPSIS-10 questionnaire has excellent psychometric properties and it will be valuable in both clinical practice and research. It will help Persian practitioners to assess their patients' photophobia.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The visual system plays an important role in the development of the vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR). In clinical practice, the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) test is used to assess contralateral VOR. BACKGROUND: This study sought to compare the oVEMP in patients with anisometropic, strabismic, and mixed amblyopia using unilateral and bilateral (simultaneous binaural) stimulation. METHODS: Forty-two amblyopic patients (20 males and 22 females) with a mean age of 10.48 ± 4.00 years (range: 5 - 20 years) were examined. The Titmus stereopsis test, alternate cover test, and best-corrected visual acuity were evaluated. Patients were divided into three groups: anisometropic, strabismic, and mixed amblyopia. The oVEMP responses including the amplitude of electrical activity (n1-p1 complex) and the latencies (n1 and p1) of the VOR responses were recorded under unilateral and bilateral stimulations. RESULTS: In the anisometropic and strabismic group, n1 latency was significantly faster in the non-amblyopic eyes compared to amblyopic eyes (Z = -2.04, p = 0.042, andZ = -2.54, p = 0.024 respectively). Mean p1 latency was significantly faster in the non-amblyopic eyes compared to the amblyopic eyes of the strabismic group (Z = -2.31, p = 0.011)In all groups, the p1 latency was faster in the non-amblyopic eye compared to bilateral stimulation (all, p < 0.05). In all groups, the n1-p1 amplitude was not significantly different between the two eyes, and between each eye and bilateral stimulation (all, p > 0.05). No significant correlation was found between the depth of amblyopia and n1 and p1 responses (all, p > 0.05). In all groups there was no significant difference in the latency of n1 and p1 between the amblyopic eye and bilateral stimulation (all, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Regardless of its type, amblyopia affects vestibular-ocular reflex responses. Further research is warranted to clarify the effect of the disease and its treatment on the ocular-vestibular system.

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout and oil spill began on April 20, 2010 in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) deep sea (1525 m). Previous studies documented an impacted area of deep-sea floor totaling 321 km2 and were based on taxonomy at the macrofauna family level and the meiofauna major taxonomic level. In the present study, finer taxonomic resolution of the meiofauna community was employed, specifically harpacticoid copepod family biodiversity. Severe or moderate impacts to harpacticoid family biodiversity were observed at 35 of 95 sampling stations, covering an estimated area of 2864 km2, 8.9 times greater impacted area than previously reported. Sensitive and tolerant harpacticoid families were observed in the impact zone. The present study greatly expands the understanding of DWH deep-sea impacts in 2010 and demonstrates that the harpacticoid family-level response is the most sensitive indicator (reported to date) of this oil spill pollution event.

Shifts in flowering time among plant communities as a result of climate change, including extreme weather events, are a growing concern. These plant phenological changes may affect the quantity and quality of food sources for specialized insect pollinators. Plant-pollinator interactions are threatened by habitat alterations and biodiversity loss, and changes in these interactions may lead to declines in flower visitors and pollination services. Most prior research has focused on short-term plant-pollinator interactions, which do not accurately capture changes in pollination services. Here, we characterized long-term plant-pollinator interactions and identified potential risks to specialized butterfly species due to habitat loss, fragmented landscapes, and changes in plant assemblages. We used 21 years of historical data from museum specimens to track the potential effects of direct and indirect changes in precipitation, temperature, monsoons, and wildfires on plant-pollinator mutualism in the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada. We found decreased pollen richness associated with butterflies within sites, as well as an increase in pollen grain abundance of drought-tolerant plants, particularly in the past 10 years. Moreover, increased global temperatures and the intensity and frequency of precipitation and wildfires were negatively correlated with pollen diversity. Our findings have important implications for understanding plant-pollinator interactions and the pollination services affected by global warming.

Tröger's base (TB) and its derivatives have been studied extensively due to their unique concave shape stemming from the endomethylene strap. However, the strap-clipped TB chemistry has been largely overlooked in metal-organic framework (MOF) solids, leading to a gap in our knowledge within this field. In this work, we report the in situ strap elimination of a carboxylate-carrying TB in the presence of formic acid, both in solution and in Zr(IV)-based MOFs. In the solution system, the methanodiazocine nucleus can be exclusively transformed into an N,N'-diformyl-decorated phenhomazine derivative, regardless of the solvent used (DMF, DMA, or DEF), as unambiguously uncovered by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In contrast, while in the MOF synthetic system, the degree of derivatization reaction can be effectively controlled to give either the secondary diamine or formyl-decorated diamine, depending on the solvent used (DMF or DEF), resulting in the formation of two Zr-MOFs with 8-connected bcu (NU-1900) and 12-connected fcu (NU-407) topologies, respectively. The derivatization mechanism is proposed to be topology-guided and dependent on the local acid concentration during the MOF formation processes. Moreover, we discovered a novel post-synthetically water-induced in situ linker formylation process in NU-1900 through sequential formic acid elimination, migration, and condensation processes, affording an isostructural framework with the same linker as in NU-407, which further corroborates our proposed mechanism. Additionally, the highly defective NU-1900 with abundant accessible Zr sites was demonstrated to be an outstanding catalyst for the detoxification of a nerve agent simulant with a half-life of less than 1 min.

Industrial-scale thermal separation processes have contributed greatly to the rise in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of targeted species with high selectivity. Here, we report the synthesis of the channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which are constructed from three-dimensional (3D) linkers, to separate the industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions by leveraging sub-Ångstrom differences in the sizes of each isomer. While the rotation of two-dimensional (2D) linkers in MOFs often affords changes in pore apertures and pore sizes that are substantial enough to hinder separation efficiency, increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to three-dimensional (3D) enables precise control of the MOF pore size and aperture regardless of the linker orientation, establishing this design principle as a broadly applicable strategy.

Three achiral polycyclic aromatic fluorophores─namely, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, and perylene-3,9-dicarboxylic acid─were chosen based on their desired properties before being incorporated into the construction of a K+-carrying gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD)-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1) and γ-CD-containing hybrid frameworks (CD-HFs). Among these fluorophores, only the pyrene-carrying one shows significant noncovalent bonding interactions with γ-CD in solution. This fluorophore is encapsulated in a CD-HF with a trigonal superstructure instead of the common cubic CD-MOF-1 found in the case of the other two fluorophores. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the trigonal CD-HF reveals a π-stacked chiral positioning of the pyrene-carrying fluorophore inside the (γ-CD)2 tunnels and held uniformly around an enantiomorphous 32 screw axis along the c direction in the solid-state structure. This helix-like structure demonstrates an additional level of chirality over and above the point-chiral stereogenic centers of γ-CD and the axial chirality associated with the self-assembled π-stacked fluorophores. These arrangements result in specifically generated photophysical and chiroptical properties, such as the controlled emergence of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission. In this manner, a complete understanding of the mechanism of chirality transfer from a chiral host (CD-HF) to an encapsulated achiral fluorophore has been achieved, an attribute which is often missing in the development of materials with CPL.

The main environmental variables controlling benthic foraminiferal distributions were identified and used to assess their influence on ecological indices developed as predictors of Ecological Quality Status (EcoQS) in marine ecosystems. Gradient forest and random forest models were applied to assess the predictive value of a selection of abiotic (environmental) and biotic (foraminifera) variables in a costal marine area in the central Adriatic Sea (Italy). This approach yields evidence that the predictor variables sand, silt, Pollution Load Index, and TN have the greatest influence on the distribution of benthic foraminifera in this area. In addition, we identify thresholds for the most important environmental variables that influence ecological indices. These findings contribute to efforts to determine how to best improve sediment quality and environmental stability for marine conservation. Further application of these approaches represents a useful tool for policymakers to survey the diversity of marine organisms and to improve the ability to protect and restore marine ecosystems by identifying predictors of diversity and identifying key thresholds in these predictors.

Atmospheric heavy metals have important environmental and health threats. To investigate atmospheric deposition and contamination of heavy metal elements in the glaciers of the eastern Tibetan Plateau (ETP), we collected the surface snow (cryoconites) samples in the Lenglongling Glacier (LG), the Gannan Snowpack (GS), the Dagu Glacier (DG), the Hailuogou Glacier (HG) and Yulong Snow-mountain Glacier (YG) in summer 2017. Samples were analyzed for concentrations and enrichment factors (EFs) of Al and trace elements (Pb, Co, Cd, Ba, Mn, Ga, Sc, V, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Rb, Sb, Cs, As, Mo, Li) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results showed that the concentrations and EFs of heavy metals (e.g. Sb, Cu, Cr, Ni, As, Mo) were generally high value in YG, GS and LG, while were relatively low value in DG and HG, implying that ETP glaciers may have been affected by atmospheric anthropogenic pollutants deposition to varying degrees. Comparing the heavy metal concentrations in the glaciers with those in the precipitation of middle/eastern China cities and also the South Asian cities, we find that the glacial heavy metal concentrations were generally low level, though the anthropogenic pollutants were still significantly enriched. Taking the spatial distribution of As and Ni concentration/EFs in the glaciers and surrounding urban precipitation as an example, we find that the heavy metal pollutants were probably transported to the glaciers through three routes from the surrounding densely populated area of Asia. The MODIS AOD and NCEP/NCAR wind vector also demonstrated that the atmospheric pollutants originated from anthropogenic emissions of urban areas of both South Asia, and northwest and east China, mainly caused by the large scale atmospheric circulation (e.g. the South Asian Monsoon, westerlies and Eastern Asian Summer Monsoon). Therefore, control of these potential pollution emission sources of the surrounding densely populated areas in Asia could be important to ETP glaciers in future perspectives.

This study employs the grain size distributions and the concentrations and isotopic compositions of Sr, Nd, and Pb in the precipitation samples collected from the Laohugou Glacier (LHG) in northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) during August 2014-2015 to investigate seasonal variability in the insoluble precipitation particle sources. Fine dust particle (0.57-27 µm) depositions dominated in autumn and winter, whereas both fine and coarse dust particle (27-100 µm) depositions were found in spring and summer. Furthermore, the concentrations of Sr, Nd, and Pb also varied seasonally-the highest and lowest Sr and Nd concentrations were recorded in spring and autumn, respectively, whereas the highest and lowest Pb concentrations were recorded in winter and summer, respectively. The Sr and Nd isotopes revealed that the dust in the winter precipitation originated predominately from the Taklimakan Desert and that in spring originated from the Badain Jaran and Qaidam deserts. The precipitation residues in summer were derived from a complex mixture of dust sources from the Gobi and other large deserts in northwest China. Autumn residues were predominately sourced from local soil near the LHG as well as from the Qaidam Basin and the northern TP surface soil. The Taklimakan, long suspected as a major source of long-range transported dust, was an insignificant contributor to the precipitation over LHG during spring, summer, and autumn. Further, the Pb isotopic ratios indicated a primary impact of anthropogenic pollutants for most part of the year (except spring). Meteorological data and the MODIS AOD model are in good agreement with the results from the analyses of the Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes for the LHG particle source, and further clarify the source regions. Thus, this study thus provides new evidence on the seasonal variability of the sources of the residual particles in remote glaciers in Central Asia.

To investigate the large-scale trace element deposition and anthropogenic pollution in mountain glaciers of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its surrounding regions, we analyzed Al and 13 trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn) in glacier snowpacks collected at the Yuzhufeng, Laohugou No.12, and Qiyi glaciers (YG, LG12, and QG, respectively) in the northeastern TP as well as in the Miaoergou Glacier (MG) in the eastern Tianshan Mountains in June 2017. The concentrations and enrichment factors (EFs) of most trace elements (e.g., As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Sb) showed that the largest value appeared in the MG, followed by LG12, and the lowest value appeared in the QG, thereby implying a decreasing influence of anthropogenic emissions on these elements from the west (MG) to the east (QG). The YG inversely exhibited high concentrations but low EFs for As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Pb, and Sb. Compared to the surrounding regions of the southern and western TP (e.g., NamCo, Mt. Everest, and Pamirs), Japan, and Kathmandu, the trace element concentrations were relatively higher at the YG and MG but relatively lower at the LG12 and QG. The spatial distribution characteristics of trace elements (e.g., Pb and Sb) exhibited a gradually decreasing concentration from west to east in the Tianshan Mountains, and from south to north in the TP, implying two potential transport routes of atmospheric pollutants from Central and South Asia to the northeastern TP. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) backward trajectory model and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations/Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIPSO/CALIOP) data reflected that these trace elements in the MG, LG12, and QG predominately originated from the western and surrounding areas, whereas in the YG they were mainly derived from a local source and South Asia through long-distance transport.

Green sulfur bacteria are an iconic example of nature's adaptation: thriving in environments of extremely low photon density, the bacterium ranks itself among the most efficient natural light-harvesting organisms. The photosynthetic antenna complex of this bacterium is a self-assembled nanostructure, ≈60 × 150 nm, made of bacteriochlorophyll molecules. We study the system from a computational nanoscience perspective by using electrodynamic modeling with the goal of understanding its role as a nanoantenna. Three different nanostructures, built from two molecular packing moieties, are considered: a structure built of concentric cylinders of aggregated bacteriochlorophyll d monomers, a single cylinder of bacteriochlorophyll c monomers, and a model for the entire chlorosome. The theoretical model captures both coherent and incoherent components of exciton transfer. The model is employed to extract optical spectra, concentration and depolarization of electromagnetic fields within the chlorosome, and fluxes of energy transfer for the structures. The second model nanostructure shows the largest field enhancement. Further, field enhancement is found to be more sensitive to dynamic noise rather than structural disorder. Field depolarization, however, is similar for all structures. This indicates that the directionality of transfer is robust to structural variations, while on the other hand, the intensity of transfer can be tuned by structural variations.

RESUMO

3-Methyl-1-sulfonic acid imidazolium nitrate ([Msim]NO(3)) as a new Brønsted acidic ionic liquid and nitrating agent was prepared and used for the efficient nitration of aromatic compounds (even aniline derivatives). The dramatic effect of this reagent by in situ generation of nitrogen dioxide as a radical on aromatic compounds to give nitroarenes has been studied.
