RESUMO

Commercial backsheets based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) can experience premature field failures in the form of outer layer cracking. This work seeks to provide a better understanding of the changes in material properties that lead to crack formation and find appropriate accelerated tests to replicate them. The PVDF-based backsheet outer layer can have a different structure and composition, and is often blended with a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer. We observed depletion of PMMA upon aging with sequential (MAST) and combined (C-AST) accelerated stress testing. In field-aged samples from Arizona and India, where PVDF crystallizes in its predominant α-phase, the degree of crystallinity greatly increased. MAST and C-AST protocols were, to some extent, able to replicate the increase in crystallinity seen in PVDF after ~ 7 years in the field, but no single-stress test condition (UV, damp heat, thermal cycling) resulted in significant changes in the material properties. The MAST regimen used here was too extreme to produce realistic degradation, but the test was useful in discovering weaknesses of the particular PVDF-based outer layer structure studied. No excessive ß-phase formation was observed after aging with any test condition; however, the presence of ß-phase was identified locally by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). We conclude that both MAST and C-AST are relevant tests for screening outdoor failure mechanisms in PVDF backsheets, as they were successful in producing material degradation that led to cracking.

RESUMO

The spontaneous emission rate of a quantum dot coupled to a structured photonic reservoir is determined by the frequency dependence of its local density of photon states. Through phonon-dressing, a breakdown of Fermi's golden rule can occur for certain photonic structures whose photon decay time becomes comparable to the longitudinal acoustic phonon decay times. We present a polaron master equation model to calculate the photoluminescence intensity from a coherently excited quantum dot coupled to a structured photonic reservoir. We consider examples of a semiconductor microcavity and a coupled cavity waveguide, and show clear photoluminescence intensity spectral features that contain unique signatures of the interplay between phonon and photon bath coupling.

RESUMO

We demonstrate resonant coupling of a Mollow triplet sideband to an optical cavity in the strong coupling regime. We show that, in this regime, the resonant sideband is strongly enhanced relative to the detuned sideband. Furthermore, the linewidth of the Mollow sidebands exhibits a highly nonlinear pump power dependence when tuned across the cavity resonance due to strong resonant interactions with the cavity mode. We compare our results to calculations using the effective phonon master equation and show that the nonlinear linewidth behavior is caused by strong coherent interaction with the cavity mode that exists only when the Mollow sideband is near cavity resonance.

RESUMO

The dominant role of quantum fluctuations in determining the steady-state and transient response of a laser is demonstrated when there is a small number of particles in the system. In this regime, quantum fluctuations are found to suppress the lasing threshold and create a non-Poisson probability distribution for n discrete excited electronic states and s discrete photons. The correlation between n and s damps the averaged dynamic response of laser emission. Random walk calculations verify the master equation predictions and are used to connect to systems containing larger numbers of particles.
