RESUMO

Understanding how function and structure are organized and their coupling with clinical traits in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a primary goal in network neuroscience research for ASD. Atypical brain functional networks and structures in individuals with ASD have been reported, but whether these associations show heterogeneous hierarchy modeling in adolescents and adults with ASD remains to be clarified. In this study, 176 adolescent and 74 adult participants with ASD without medication or comorbidities and sex, age matched healthy controls (HCs) from 19 research groups from the openly shared Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange II database were included. To investigate the relationship between the functional gradient, structural changes, and clinical symptoms of brain networks in adolescents and adults with ASD, functional gradient and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analyses based on 1000 parcels defined by Schaefer mapped to Yeo's seven-network atlas were performed. Pearson's correlation was calculated between the gradient scores, gray volume and density, and clinical traits. The subsystem-level analysis showed that the second gradient scores of the default mode networks and frontoparietal network in patients with ASD were relatively compressed compared to adolescent HCs. Adult patients with ASD showed an overall compression gradient of 1 in the ventral attention networks. In addition, the gray density and volumes of the subnetworks showed no significant differences between the ASD and HC groups at the adolescent stage. However, adults with ASD showed decreased gray density in the limbic network. Moreover, numerous functional gradient parameters, but not VBM parameters, in adolescents with ASD were considerably correlated with clinical traits in contrast to those in adults with ASD. Our findings proved that the atypical changes in adolescent ASD mainly involve the brain functional network, while in adult ASD, the changes are more related to brain structure, including gray density and volume. These changes in functional gradients or structures are markedly correlated with clinical traits in patients with ASD. Our study provides a novel understanding of the pathophysiology of the structure-function hierarchy in ASD.

Introduction: Tasks involving mental practice, relying on the cognitive rehearsal of physical motors or other activities, have been reported to have similar patterns of brain activity to overt execution. In this study, we introduced a novel imagination task called, acupuncture imagery and aimed to investigate the neural oscillations during acupuncture imagery. Methods: Healthy volunteers were guided to watch a video of real needling in the left and right KI3 (Taixi point). The subjects were then asked to perform tasks to keep their thoughts in three 1-min states alternately: resting state, needling imagery left KI3, and needling imagery right KI3. Another group experienced real needling in the right KI3. A 31-channel-electroencephalography was synchronously recorded for each subject. Microstate analyses were performed to depict the brain dynamics during these tasks. Results: Compared to the resting state, both acupuncture needling imagination and real needling in KI3 could introduce significant changes in neural dynamic oscillations. Moreover, the parameters involving microstate A of needling imagery in the right KI3 showed similar changes as real needling in the right KI3. Discussion: These results confirm that needling imagination and real needling have similar brain activation patterns. Needling imagery may change brain network activity and play a role in neural regulation. Further studies are needed to explore the effects of acupuncture imagery and the potential application of acupuncture imagery in disease recovery.

Electroencephalogram-microstate analysis was conducted using low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA)-KEY to evaluate dynamic brain network changes in patients with acute large artery atherosclerotic cerebral infarction (LAACI) during the rest and sleep stages. This study included 35 age- and sex-matched healthy controls and 34 patients with acute LAACI. Each participant performed a 3-h, 19-channel video electroencephalogram test. Subsequently, 20 epochs of 2-s sleep spindles during stage N2 sleep and five epochs of 10-s electroencephalogram data in the resting state for each participant were obtained. In both the resting state and sleep spindles, patients with LAACI displayed altered neural oscillations. The parameters of microstate A (coverage, occurrence, and duration) increased during the resting state in the patients with LAACI compared with healthy controls. The coverage and occurrence of microstate B and D were reduced in the LAACI group compared with the healthy controls (p < 0.05). Moreover, during sleep spindles, the duration of microstate A and the transition probability from microstate A and B to C decreased, but the coverage of microstate B and the transition rate from microstate B to D increased (p < 0.05) in the LAACI group compared with the healthy controls. These results enable better understanding of how neural oscillations are modified in patients with LAACI during the resting state and sleep spindles. Following LAACI, the dynamic brain network undergoes changes during sleep spindles and the resting state. Continued long-term investigations are required to determine how well these changes in brain dynamics reflect the clinical characteristics of patients with LAACI.

OBJECTIVE: The changes in resting-state functional networks and their correlations with clinical traits remain to be clarified in migraine. Here we aim to investigate the brain spatio-temporal dynamics of resting-state networks and their possible correlations with the clinical traits in migraine. METHODS: Twenty Four migraine patients without aura and 26 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. Each included subject underwent a resting-state EEG and echo planar imaging examination. The disability of migraine patients was evaluated by Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS). After data acquisition, EEG microstates (Ms) combining functional connectivity (FC) analysis based on Schafer 400-seven network atlas were performed. Then, the correlation between obtained parameters and clinical traits was investigated. RESULTS: Compared with HC group, the brain temporal dynamics depicted by microstates showed significantly increased activity in functional networks involving MsB and decreased activity in functional networks involving MsD; The spatial dynamics were featured by decreased intra-network FC within the executive control network( ECN) and inter-network FC between dorsal attention network (DAN) and ECN (P < 0.05); Moreover, correlation analysis showed that the MIDAS score was positively correlated with the coverage and duration of MsC, and negatively correlated with the occurrence of MsA; The FC within default mode network (DMN), and the inter-FC of ECN- visual network (VN), ECN- limbic network, VN-limbic network was negatively correlated with MIDAS. However, the FC of DMN-ECN was positively correlated with MIDAS; Furthermore, significant interactions between the temporal and spatial dynamics were also obtained. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed the notion that altered spatio-temporal dynamics exist in migraine patients during resting-state. And the temporal dynamics, the spatial changes and the clinical traits such as migraine disability interact with each other. The spatio-temporal dynamics obtained from EEG microstate and fMRI FC analyses may be potential biomarkers for migraine and with a huge potential to change future clinical practice in migraine.

Gastric cancer (GCa) is the most common human health-threatening malignancy, and its high incidence and poor prognosis. Previous studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are aberrantly expressed in a variety of tumors and are involved in tumor progression. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory role of LINC01420 in GCa cell proliferation migration and invasion, and search for new prognostic biomarkers for GCa. The expression levels of LINC01420 and miR-149-5p in GCa cells were analyzed with reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. Kaplan Meier survival analysis and Cox regression were used to analyze the prognostic value. Luciferase reporter assay was used to detect the interaction between LINC01420 and miR-149-5p. The effects of LINC01420/miR-149-5p axis on GCa cell proliferation, migration and invasion were assessed by CCK-8 and Transwell assays. LINC01420 expression levels were significantly increased in tissues and cell lines of GCa. Kaplan Meier curve results showed that overexpression of LINC01420 predicted poor prognosis. Silencing LINC01420 could inhibit the proliferation migration and invasion of GCa cells. The luciferase reporter assay results indicated that miR-149-5p might be a target of LINC01420 and mediate the effects of LINC01420 on GCa cell proliferation and migration and invasion. In conclusion, this study demonstrates an important regulatory role of the LINC01420/miR-149-5p axis in GCa progression and it provides a novel and significant biomarker for GCa treatment and prognosis.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has became a major problem affecting global health security.To assess the differences and dynamic changes of blood coagulation function in COVID-19 patients with different severity.A total of 261 COVID-19 patients from January 24 to March 25, 2020 in Huangshi, Hubei Province were enrolled.We designed a retrospective observational study. Clinical information, including age, blood routine and blood coagulation function, were collected. According to the Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for COVID-19 (seventh version) that issued by the National Health Committee of the People's Republic of China, patients were divided into 3 subgroups: 186 ordinary, 45 severe and 30 critical ones. We compared the differences in blood coagulation factors among groups.Average age in critical group (71.47 ±â€Š11.48 years) was the oldest of 3 subgroups. At admission, statistically differences could be observed among ordinary, severe and critical patients in D-dimer (0.18 ±â€Š0.33, 0.63 ±â€Š1.13 and 1.16 ±â€Š1.58 mg/L), fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products (FDP) (3.11 ±â€Š5.30, 9.82 ±â€Š23.91 and 21.94 ±â€Š40.98 µg/ml), platelet [(169 ±â€Š62.85), (188 ±â€Š71.56) and (117 ±â€Š38.31) × 10/L)] and lymphocyte count [(1.18 ±â€Š0.46), (0.82 ±â€Š0.35) and (0.75 ±â€Š0.39) × 10/L)], respectively (P < .05). During hospitalization, the peak values of coagulation and valley values of blood routine were monitored. There were significant differences among ordinary, severe and critical patients in D-dimer (0.26 ±â€Š0.46, 1.39 ±â€Š1.51 and 2.89 ±â€Š1.68 mg/L), FDP (3.29 ±â€Š5.52, 23.68 ±â€Š39.07 and 56.11 ±â€Š49.94 µg/ml), platelet [(164 ±â€Š55.53), (171 ±â€Š69.96) and (84 ±â€Š57.80) × 10/L)] and lymphocyte count [(1.10 ±â€Š0.46), (0.65 ±â€Š0.35) and (0.55 ±â€Š0.31) × 10/L)], respectively (P < .001). D-dimer and FDP in the course of disease in severe/critical groups showed a first upward and then downward trend.We concluded that coagulation function indexes such as D-dimer and FDP could be served as markers to estimate COVID-19 patients condition. Close monitoring of coagulation function may be helpful for early diagnosis of severe patients and guidance of treatments.

Current understanding on the fate and behavior of microplastics (MPs) in complex soil media remains inadequate. We characterized the aging and hetero-aggregation of a MP sampled in farmland soil, and explored its vertical downward transport in natural loamy sand. The MP was identified with FTIR spectrum as polypropylene, a plastic lighter than water. FTIR spectrum combined with SEM imaging confirmed the MP was highly aged, generating colloidal plastic fibers and carbonyl groups. SEM imaging coupled with EDX analysis suggested hetero-aggregation of the MP with soil minerals. Soil leaching tests performed with the clean MP (without soil minerals) (CMP), the raw MP (RMP) (with soil minerals), and the RMP with humic acid (HA) (RMP + HA) demonstrated that the mobility was insignificant for the CMP, moderate for the RMP and highest for the RMP + HA, resulting in a maximal downward traveling distance of 0 cm, 3-4 cm, and 9-10 cm, respectively. Correlation between the maximal traveling distance and zeta potential of the CMP, RMP, and RMP + HA confirmed surface charge as a dominant control on the MP mobility; while the increasing density of the MP, due to hetero-aggregation with soil minerals, was identified as a driving mechanism for its downward transport, despite its intrinsic density lower than water. Occurrence of only the lower-sized rod-shaped plastic fibers at the maximal traveling distance suggested the natural aging, a process leading to plastic vibration and fragmentation, was conducive to plastic translocation. The three explored classes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (tetracycline, beta-lactam and sulfonamide) were all detected in the plastic surface, suggesting the MP may function as a potential pathway for the dissemination of ARGs to the deeper soil layer. These findings are important to understand the concentration distribution of both the MPs and ARGs in agriculture impacted soils, a natural reservoir of both emerging contaminants.

Background and Aims: Recent reports have indicated that hepatic dysfunction occurred in a proportion of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to compare and describe the liver biomarkers in different subtypes of COVID-19 patients. Methods: This study enrolled 288 COVID-19 patients in Huangshi Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All patients were divided into ordinary, severe, and critical groups according to the Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 7). Demographic, clinical characteristics and liver biomarkers were compared among the three groups. Results: During hospitalization, AST, TBiL, and ALP levels in ordinary and severe patients fluctuated within the normal range with a rising trend in critical patients except AST. ALT and GGT levels fluctuated within the normal range showing an upward trend, while LDH levels in the critical group exceeded the normal range. Prealbumin showed an upward trend, especially in the severe group. At discharge, AST and LDH levels in ordinary and severe groups were lower than their baselines but increased in the critical group. In contrast to albumin, TBiL levels were increased in ordinary and critical groups while decreased in the severe group. The stratified analysis revealed factors affecting liver function in critical cases included highest temperature ≥38.0°C, age ≥60 and symptom of hypoxemia. Conclusions: COVID-19 can cause severe hepatic dysfunction in critical patients, requiring early monitoring and intervention. LDH, ALP, GGT, TBiL, prealbumin, and albumin may be helpful for evaluating and predicting disease prognosis due to their correlation with disease severity in COVID-19.

Environmental processes of nanoplastics in heterogeneous natural groundwater systems remain unclear. In this study, the control of particle size and surface functional groups on the fate and transport of nanoplastics in an organic matter (OM) rich aquifer was explored using batch and column tests. The carboxyl-modified 200 nm (200CNP), carboxyl-modified 50 nm (50CNP), and amino-modified 50 nm (50ANP) polystyrene latex beads were used as surrogates for nanoplastics of contrasting sizes and surface functional groups. Aquifer sand and natural groundwater sampled from an agriculture-impacted shallow sandy aquifer were processed to obtain granule beds with/out surface minerals and groundwater containing different-sized fractions of OM. Results show that particle size controlled the hetero-aggregation rate of nanoplastics with OM and Ca2+: a larger size resulting in a lower reaction rate led to a higher stability of 200CNP than 50CNP and 50ANP. Meanwhile, surface functional groups appeared to affect the affinity of OM and Ca2+ to nanoplastics, i.e. the amino group allowed the adsorption of dissolved OM on the particle but inhibited the adsorption of Ca2+ and suspended OM, while the carboxyl group allowed adsorption of the all. The resulting variable OM coatings formed on the different nanoplastics played a critical role in determining the particle stability and mobility, i.e. the suspended OM increased both the particle stability and mobility while the dissolved OM reduced both. These findings suggest that: 1. Depending on the OM properties, the influence of particle size and surface group on the nanoplastic processes might be secondary to the OM impact; 2. In evaluating the OM impact, not only the OM concentration but also the size and surface physiochemistry of the OM should be characterized. The insight gained is important to predict the concentration evolution pattern of weathered nanoplastics in OM-impacted sandy aquifers.

OBJECTIVE: To study sialic acid and iron content in breastmilk in Chinese women during different lactation stages. METHODS: Sialic acid and iron content of colostrum, transitional milk, mature milk, and involutional milk were determined using a neuraminidase assay kit and the ferrozine method, respectively in 88 lactating women (58 Term, 30 Preterm). RESULTS: The mean (SD) sialic acid levels of colostrum, transitional milk, mature milk, and involutional milk were 2201.4 (676.6) mg/L, 1445.9 (423.4) mg/L, 395.3 (96.0) mg/L and 273.0 (76.9) mg/L, respectively. The median iron content were 0.05 mg/L, 0.06 mg/L, 0.25 mg/L and 0.35 mg/L, respectively, in successive stages of lactation. Sialic acid and iron were significantly higher in breast milk of preterm mothers compared to term mothers. CONCLUSION: Sialic acid and iron content in breast milk vary greatly throughout the lactation stages, which probably reflects the infants' needs for growth and development at different stages.

A series of unique flake-tube structured p-n heterojunctions of BiOI/TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) were successfully prepared by loading large amounts of BiOI nanoflakes onto both the outer and inner walls of well-separated TiO2 nanotubes using anodization followed by the sequential chemical bath deposition (S-CBD) method. The as-prepared BiOI/TNTAs samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen sorption. The photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity and stability of the BiOI/TNTAs samples toward degradation of methyl orange (MO) solutions under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) were evaluated. The visible-light PEC performance of BiOI/TNTAs samples was further confirmed by the transient photocurrent response test. The results from the current study revealed that the 5-BiOI/TNTAs sample exhibited the best PEC activity, favourable stability, and the highest photocurrent density among all the BiOI/TNTAs heterostructured samples. The combined effects of several factors may contribute to the remarkable visible-light PEC performance for the 5-BiOI/TNTAs sample including a 3D connected intertube spacing system and an open tube-mouth structure, strong visible-light absorption by BiOI, the formation of a p-n junction, larger specific surface area, and the impact of the applied external electrostatic field.
