RESUMO

PURPOSE: Targeting inflammatory crosstalk between tumors and their microenvironment has emerged as a crucial method for suppressing pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) progression. Berberine (BBR) is a natural pentacyclic isoquinoline alkaloid known for its anti-inflammatory and antitumor pharmacological effects; however, the mechanism underlying PAAD suppression remains unclear. We aim to investigate the effects of BBR on PAAD progression and their underlying mechanisms. METHODS: The prognostic value of inflammation-related genes in PAAD was assessed using bioinformatics analyses, then the pharmacological effects and potential mechanisms of BBR on PAAD will be investigated in silico, in vitro, and in vivo. RESULTS: Fifty-eight prognostic inflammation-related genes were identified in PAAD, which were shown to have good sensitivity and specificity using a novel inflammation-related gene risk-prognosis prediction model. Among these, four candidate genes (CAPS3, PTGS2, ICAM1, and CXCR4) were predicted as targets of BBR in PAAD in silico. Molecular docking simulations showed that the four key targets docked well with BBR. Further BBR treatment suppressed cell proliferation, colony formation, and induced cell cycle arrest in vitro. Moreover, BBR exhibited a significant tumor-suppressive effect in murine subcutaneous xenografts without macroscopic hepatic and renal toxicities. In addition, BBR downregulated CAPS3, PTGS2, ICAM1, and CXCR4 protein expression. CONCLUSION: This study not only elucidated the prognostic value of inflammation-related genes in PAAD but also demonstrated the potential of BBR to inhibit PAAD by targeting these genes.

OBJECTIVE: This study used random forest model to explore the feasibility of radial artery calcification in prediction of coronary artery calcification in hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled hemodialysis patients and performed ultrasound examinations on their radial arteries to evaluate the calcification status using a calcification index. All involved patients received coronary artery computed tomography scans to generate coronary artery calcification scores (CACS). Clinical variables were collected from all patients. We constructed both a random forest model and a logistic regression model to predict CACS. Logistic regression model was used to identify the risk factors of radial artery calcification. RESULTS: One hundred eighteen patients were included in our analysis. In random forest model, the radial artery calcification index, age, serum C-reactive protein, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, and hypertension history were related to CACS based on the average decrease of the Gini coefficient. The random forest model achieved a sensitivity of 76.9%, specificity of 75.0%, and area under receiver operating characteristic of 0.869, while the logistic regression model achieved a sensitivity of 75.2%, specificity of 68.7%, and area under receiver operating characteristic of 0.742 in prediction of CACS. Sex, BMI index, smoking history, hypertension history, diabetes history, and serum total calcium were all the risk factors related to radial artery calcification. CONCLUSIONS: A random forest model based on radial artery calcification could be used to predict CACS in hemodialysis patients, providing a potential method for rapid screening and prediction of coronary artery calcification.

El síndrome de Jarcho-Levin es un epónimo usado para describir un espectro de displasias esqueléticas de tórax pequeño con el compromiso variable de vertebras y costillas. Inicialmente considerado letal, actualmente es compatible con la vida en sus presentaciones más leves. Las alteraciones óseas que conllevan un patrón respiratorio restrictivo, las infecciones respiratorias de repetición y el fenotipo particular pueden dificultar el manejo anestésico perioperatorio. Es de especial interés la adecuada valoración de la vía aérea por presentar predictores de vía aérea difícil, así como la prevención, el diagnóstico precoz y el tratamiento adecuado de la insuficiencia respiratoria. Presentamos el caso de un paciente con síndrome de Jarcho-Levin intervenido de distracción vertebral, con sus implicaciones más destacables en el manejo anestésico.(AU)

Initially considered lethal, it is currently compatible with life in its mildest forms. Bone alterations that lead to a restrictive respiratory pattern, recurrent respiratory infections and particular phenotype, can make perioperative anesthetic management difficult. The proper assessment of the airway is of special interest because it presents predictors of a difficult airway, as well as the prevention, early diagnosis and adequate treatment of respiratory failure. We present the case of a patient with Jarcho-Levin Syndrome who underwent vertebral distraction surgery, with its most notable implications in anesthetic management.

This study aimed to observe the mechanism and effect of circ_0004771 on cardiomyocyte injury in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The differences in circ_0004771 expression in the blood of AMI patients and healthy volunteers were observed by Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction. AMI cell models were constructed by hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced injury in human cardiomyocytes (AC16 cells). The changes of circ_0004771 expression in AMI cells were observed. After transfection with the knockdown or overexpression of circ_0004771 vector in AMI cells, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and propidium iodide/FITC-Annexin V staining were performed to detect cell proliferation and apoptosis levels, extracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Expression levels of Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway-related proteins (p-MEK1/2, MEK1/2, p-ERK1/2, ERK1/2), and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress proteins (GRP78 and CHOP-1) were observed in each group of cells by western blot method. The expression level of circ_0004771 was significantly reduced in both clinical samples and cells of AMI. When circ_0004771 was knocked down in AMI cells, it resulted in a decrease in cell proliferation level and significant increase in apoptosis level. The inhibition of circ_0004771 expression caused leakage of LDH in AMI cells, accumulation of intracellular MDA, and inhibition of SOD activity. In addition, the knockdown of circ_0004771 significantly increased the levels of p-MEK1/2, p-ERK1/2, GRP78, and CHOP-1 in H/R-induced AC16 cells. However, the overexpression of circ_0004771 resulted in the opposite result as when circ_0004771 was knocked down. A low level of circ_0004771 in AMI activates the MAPK signaling pathway in cardiomyocytes as well as encourages intracellular oxidative stress and ER stress, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting apoptosis.

The ecological restoration and protection of territorial space is a systematic project for the protection and restoration of ecosystems damaged or degraded by human disturbance. Effectiveness evaluation is of great significance to the optimization, adjustment, and sustainability of ecological restoration and protection. Current research and practices tend to focus on a single element and the site scale. Based on the study on the connotation of ecological restoration and protection of territorial space and the multi-scale characteristics of ecosystems, we constructed a multi-scale effectiveness evaluation system for ecological restoration and protection of territorial space and a full-cycle monitoring system for effectiveness evaluation. The multi-scale effectiveness evaluation system consisted of the regional/watershed scale, the protection and restoration unit scale, and the sub-project scale. The full-cycle monitoring system contained the basic information investigation system before construction, the construction monitoring system during construction, and the multi-scale effectiveness evaluation system after construction. At the regional/watershed scale, structure, quality, and services of ecosystem were concerned and remote sensing was used as the main method to capture data. At the protection and restoration unit scale, ecological stress factors, ecosystem quality and services were concerned, and the main methods were remote sensing combined with field survey. At the sub-project scale, engineering technology measures were concerned and the field survey was used as the main method. In the implementation of the multi-scale effectiveness evaluation, it would be necessary to focus on and solve the key issues including the spillover effect, transmission mechanism, and potential impact of ecological restoration.

The passivation effect of Fe3O4/mulberry pole biochar (Fe-MBC) prepared at different carbonization temperatures on soil available arsenic content was studied through soil culture experiments, and Fe-MBC-800 (prepared by carbonization at 800℃) with good passivation effect was selected and characterized. The effects of 1%-7% (mass fraction of biochar to soil) Fe-MBC-800, MBC-800, and Fe3O4 on soil pH value, soil electrical conductivity, soil arsenic form, rice biomass, and total arsenic (As) content in rice were studied using a pot experiment. The results showed that:①Fe-MBC-800 successfully loaded Fe3O4, and its main functional groups were C=O double bond, O-H bond, C-O bond, and Fe-O bond. The specific surface areas of Fe-MBC-800, MBC-800, and Fe3O4 were 209.659 m2·g-1, 517.714 m2·g-1, and 68.025 m2·g-1, respectively. ②The addition of Fe-MBC-800 could increase the soil pH value, decrease the soil EC value, increase the content of residual arsenic in soil, and reduce the content of water-soluble arsenic and available arsenic in the soil. Under the treatment using 7% Fe-MBC-800 (ω) amendments, the content of water-soluble arsenic and available arsenic in the soil decreased by 81.6% and 56.33%, respectively. ③When the addition ratio of Fe-MBC-800 in the soil was 5%-7%, it could promote the growth of rice plants, increase rice biomass, and reduce the bioaccumulation of arsenic by between 62.5% and 68.75%.

Background: Vascular calcification (VC) has been observed in patients with hemodialysis, whereas few studies have investigated calcification in the upper extremity vasculature. Both ultrasound and X-ray are used to investigate the calcification of arteries in patients. However, there is a lack of data on the consistency between these two methods. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of VC in the radial and ulnar arteries of hemodialysis patients and investigate the detection consistency in VC between ultrasound and X-ray. Methods: Ultrasound and X-ray examinations were performed in the radial and ulnar arteries of both the left and right upper extremities of 40 patients on hemodialysis. The calcification status of arteries was evaluated by the calcification index from ultrasound and X-ray respectively. Clinical variables of patients were collected from all the involved patients. Results: Of the 40 patients, VC was detected in 31 patients by ultrasound, while X-ray detected VC in 22 patients. Compared to ultrasound assessment, X-ray assessment was 73.21% sensitive but only 66.35% specific with a positive predictive value of 53.95% for detecting calcifications in the radial or ulnar artery. The level of agreement between ultrasound and X-ray results was fair. In addition, our data showed that more ulnar arteries had VCs than the corresponding radial arteries. Conclusion: Ultrasound is more sensitive in detecting the presence of calcified atherosclerotic lesions. Ultrasound and X-ray exhibited fair consistency. Ultrasound screening for upper extremity radial and ulnar arteries in hemodialysis patients may deserve attention to explore its clinical significance.

Massive proteinuria and hypoalbuminemia are potential risk factors in thromboembolic complications. Venous thrombosis is a frequent complication of thromboembolism in patients with membranous glomerulonephritis, while arterial thrombosis is much less reported. A 35-year-old man presented with nephrotic syndrome and osteofascial compartment syndrome in the right lower limb due to arterial thrombosis. The biopsy findings were consistent with those of stage 2 membranous nephropathy. After immunotherapy (steroids and cyclosporine), the massive proteinuria, renal function, and serum albumin improved markedly. This is the first case of adult membranous glomerulonephritis with unilateral lower extremity arterial thrombosis diagnosed by renal biopsy and arteriography. It further confirms the high incidence of thromboembolic complications with membranous nephropathy.

M. candidum, an evergreen shrubby flower known for its superior adaptation ability in South China, has gained increased attention in garden applications. However, scant attention has been paid to its flower development and color formation process at the non-coding RNA level. To fill this gap, we conducted a comprehensive analysis based on long non-coding RNA sequencing (lncRNA-seq), RNA-seq, small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq), and widely targeted metabolome detection of three different flower developmental stages of M. candidum. After differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs), differentially expressed microRNAs (DEmiRNAs), and differentially synthesized metabolites (DSmets) analyses between the different flower developmental stages, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were conducted to identify some key genes and metabolites in flavonoid, flavone, anthocyanin, carotenoid, and alkaloid-related GO terms and biosynthetic pathways. Three direct-acting models, including antisense-acting, cis-acting, and trans-acting between lncRNAs and mRNAs, were detected to illustrate the direct function of lncRNAs on target genes during flower development and color formation. Based on the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory theory, we constructed a lncRNA-mediated regulatory network composed of DElncRNAs, DEmiRNAs, DEmRNAs, and DSmets to elucidate the indirect role of lncRNAs in the flower development and color formation of M. candidum. By utilizing correlation analyses between DERNAs and DSmets within the ceRNA regulatory network, alongside verification trials of the ceRNA regulatory mechanism, the study successfully illustrated the significance of lncRNAs in flower development and color formation process. This research provides a foundation for improving and regulating flower color at the lncRNA level in M. candidum, and sheds light on the potential applications of non-coding RNA in studies of flower development.

BACKGROUND Intermittent hypoxemia can cause changes in certain brain structures. However, in pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH), there is only limited information on the effect of ATH-induced OSA on brain structures. This study sought to investigate alterations in amygdala and hippocampal volumes in children with OSA by ATH. MATERIAL AND METHODS Magnetic resonance imaging scans were applied in children who had ATH-induced OSA (ATH/OSA) and in healthy children. Amygdala and hippocampus volumes and adenoid sizes were measured on MRI volumetric images. The ratio of adenoid size/nasopharyngeal depth was used to describe the severity of adenoid hypertrophy. The clinical variables of the involved subjects were investigated. RESULTS One hundred ATH/OSA children and 100 healthy children without ATH/OSA participated in the study. The ATH/OSA children had higher amygdala volumes and amygdala/hippocampus volume ratios but lower hippocampus volumes than healthy controls, and the amygdala/hippocampus volume ratios were correlated with disease duration and hypoxemia conditions. However, our data showed that amygdala/hippocampus volume ratios were not correlated with the ratios of adenoid size/nasopharyngeal depth in the ATH/OSA children. In addition, the ratio of adenoid size/nasopharyngeal depths in ATH/OSA children was higher than that in healthy children in each subgroup based on the age of participants. CONCLUSIONS Compared to healthy controls, amygdala/hippocampus volume ratios are increased in children with ATH/OSA.

Despite the importance of enantioenriched alcohols in medicinal chemistry, total synthesis, and materials science, the efficient and selective construction of enantioenriched tertiary alcohols bearing two contiguous stereocenters has remained a substantial challenge. We report a platform for their preparation through the enantioconvergent, nickel-catalyzed addition of organoboronates to racemic, nonactivated ketones. We prepared several important classes of α,ß-chiral tertiary alcohols in a single step with high levels of diastereo- and enantioselectivity through a dynamic kinetic asymmetric addition of aryl and alkenyl nucleophiles. We applied this protocol to modify several profen drugs and to rapidly synthesize biologically relevant molecules. We expect this nickel-catalyzed, base-free ketone racemization process to be a widely applicable strategy for the development of dynamic kinetic processes.

New antimicrobials are urgently needed to combat Gram-negative bacteria, particularly multi-drug resistant (MDR) and phenotypically resistant biofilm species. At present, only sequence-defined alpha-peptides (e.g. polymyxin B) can selectively target Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharides. We show that a copolymer, without a defined sequence, shows good potency against MDR Gram-negative bacteria including its biofilm form. The tapered blocky co-beta-peptide with controlled N-terminal hydrophobicity (#4) has strong interaction with the Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharides via its backbone through electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions but not the Gram-positive bacterial and mammalian cell membranes so that this copolymer is non-toxic to these two latter cell types. The new #4 co-beta-peptide selectively kills Gram-negative bacteria with low cytotoxicity both in vitro and in a mouse biofilm wound infection model. This strategy provides a new concept for the design of Gram-negative selective antimicrobial peptidomimetics against MDR and biofilm species.

Urban renewal can transform areas that are not adapted to modern urban life, allowing them to redevelop and flourish; however, the renewal process generates many new construction sites, producing environmentally harmful construction dust. The widespread use of urban green plastic cover (GPC) at construction sites and the development of high-resolution satellites have made it possible to extract the spatial distribution of construction sites and provide a basis for environmental protection authorities to protect against dust sources. Existing GPC extraction methods based on remote sensing images are either difficult to obtain the exact boundary of GPC or cannot provide corresponding algorithms according to different application scenarios. In order to determine the distribution of green plastic cover in the built-up area, this paper selects a variety of typical machine learning algorithms to classify the land cover of the test area image and selects K-nearest neighbor as the best machine learning algorithm through accuracy evaluation. Then multiple deep learning methods were used and the top networks with high overall scores were selected by comparing various aspects. Then these networks were used to predict the GPC of the test area image, and the accuracy evaluation results showed that the segmentation accuracy of deep learning was much higher than that of machine learning methods, but it took more time to predict. Therefore, combining different application scenarios, this paper gives the corresponding suggested methods for GPC extraction.

BACKGROUND: The aberrantly increased proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) was critically associated with atherosclerosis (AS) progression. MiR-197-3p has been confirmed to regulate various biological processes, such as tumorigenesis; however, whether miR-197-3p is involved with the pathological development of AS remains largely unknown. METHODS: The serum levels of miR-197-3p in AS patients and healthy donors were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The transfection efficacies of miR-197-3p mimic or inhibitor in VSMCs were evaluated by PCR assay. The effects of miR-197-3p on VSMC proliferation and migration were determined by EdU cell proliferation and Traswell migration assays. Western blotting was conducted to evaluate the effect of miR-197-3p on WDR5 expression in VSMCs. RESULTS: In the present study, we found that the expression of miR-197-3p was decreased in the serum of AS patients compared to healthy donors. Overexpression of miR-197-3p inhibited the proliferation and migration of VSMCs, while silencing miR-197-3p showed opposite effects. Mechanistical study revealed that WD Repeat Domain 5 (WDR5) was a target of miR-197-3p. Moreover, miR-197-3p was downregulated in VSMCs upon IL6 treatment and inhibited IL6-induced proliferation and migration in VSMCs. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that miR-197-3p could serve as a promising diagnostic marker for AS and that targeting IL6/miR-197-3p/WDR5 axis might be a potential approach to treat AS.

BACKGROUND: Thrombosis is one of the main complications leading to the failure of autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for patients with renal failure. Thrombectomy is one of the major therapies to remove thrombi to salvage the AVF and prolong its patency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients with AVF thrombosis at the anastomosis were recruited for this study and underwent thrombectomy procedures. Their clinical variables were collected. The vasculature was accessed at the site of the aneurysmal dilatation. Under ultrasound guidance, a scoop thrombectomy procedure was performed by anterograde and retrograde scooping to remove the thrombus using forceps. Then, a sheath was placed in the direct vertical direction. Angioplasty was performed with a balloon to treat the underlying primary arteriovenous stenosis. Patients were followed up for 12 months after surgery. The procedural success, primary and secondary patency rates, and incidence of procedure-related complications were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 2 minor (3.6%) and no major complications. Clinical success was achieved in 55 of the 56 procedures (98.2%). No symptomatic pulmonary embolism or arterial embolization was noted. The primary patency rates at 3, 6, and 12 months were 92.9, 83.8, and 73.3%%, respectively, according to the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. CONCLUSION: Scoop thrombectomy is a safe procedure with high technical success and a low complication rate, and it is an effective method for patients to receive hemodialysis immediately.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. Accumulating studies suggest that the deregulation of circular RNA (circRNA) is involved in DN pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the role of circSMAD4 in DN models. METHODS: Mice were treated with streptozotocin to establish DN models in vivo. Mouse glomerulus mesangial cells (SV40-MES13) were treated with high glucose to establish DN models in vitro. The expression of circSMAD4, miR-377-3p and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) mRNA was measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The releases of inflammatory factors were examined by ELISA. The protein levels of fibrosis-related markers, apoptosis-related markers and BMP7 were checked by western blot. Cell apoptosis was monitored by flow cytometry assay. The predicted relationship between miR-377-3p and circSMAD4 or BMP7 was validated by dual-luciferase reporter assay or pull-down assay. RESULTS: CircSMAD4 was poorly expressed in DN mice and HG-treated SV40-MES13 cells. HG induced SV40-MES13 cell inflammation, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and apoptosis. CircSMAD4 overexpression alleviated, while circSMAD4 knockdown aggravated HG-induced SV40-MES13 cell injuries. MiR-377-3p was targeted by circSMAD4, and miR-377-3p enrichment partly reversed the effects of circSMAD4 overexpression. BMP7 was a target of miR-377-3p, and circSMAD4 regulated BMP7 expression by targeting miR-377-3p. MiR-377-3p overexpression aggravated HG-induced injuries by suppressing BMP7. CONCLUSION: CircSMAD4 alleviates HG-induced SV40-MES13 cell inflammation, ECM deposition and apoptosis by relieving miR-377-3p-mediated inhibition on BMP7 in DN progression.

CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) have shown great potential in various optoelectronic devices due to their excellent photophysical properties. However, the poor stability has severely impeded their practical applications. Much effort has been devoted to the preparation of monodisperse core-shell NCs to improve the stability of CsPbX3 NCs. However, it is still challenging to develop a general method to coat CsPbX3 NCs with oxides at the single-particle level. In this work, we report a simple way to prepare monodisperse CsPbX3@SiO2/Ta2O5/ZrO2 core-shell structure NCs using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) as a bridging ligand. It has been found that careful control of the hydrolysis and condensation process of oxide precursors is critical for the successful preparation of CsPbX3@oxide core-shell NCs. The stability of CsPbI3 NCs upon attack of water, UV-light irradiation, and heating before and after the oxide shell growth has been investigated, demonstrating the efficient protective effect of oxide shells. This work not only provides a novel and universal approach for coating the individual CsPbX3 nanocrystal with various oxide shells but also paves the way for potential practical applications of CsPbX3 NCs because of the enhanced stability.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the effect of local expression of galectin-3 in the development of stenotic arteriovenous fistula (AVF). METHODS: We collected stenotic venous tissues, adjacent nonstenotic venous tissues, and blood samples from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with AVF stenosis, while normal venous tissues and blood samples were collected from ESRD patients before AVF creation as controls. Also blood samples were collected from ESRD patients with nonstenosis functional AVF. Galectin-3, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and α-SMA expression in the venous tissues were examined by immunohistochemistry, and the ERK1/2 pathway activity in the intima was accessed by western blot. Serum galectin-3 level was measured by ELISA. Thereafter, human pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (HPASMCs) were cultured in vitro, and the interaction between Galectin-3 and ERK1/2 pathway in HPASMCs was estimated by western blot. RESULTS: ESRD patients with stenotic AVF had a significant higher serum galectin-3 level than normal controls, and patients with non-stenotic functional AVF. The expression levels of galectin-3, phosphorylated ERK1/2, PCNA, MMP-9, and α-SMA in the stenotic venous tissues were higher than that in the normal venous tissues or the adjacent nonstenotic AVF venous tissues. Correlation analysis showed that the expression of galectin-3 of the neointima was positively correlated with PCNA and α-SMA in the stenotic AVF venous tissues. In HPASMCs, galectin-3 can increase the activity of phosphorylated ERK1/2 and promote the expression of α-SMA. CONCLUSION: In the stenotic AVF of ESRD patients, expression of the galectin-3 was significantly increased, showing a positive relation with neointima development.

The screening and treatment of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) still perplexes clinicians, making it necessary to explore new markers. To this end, this research examined the underlying molecular mechanism of LSCC based on high-throughput datasets (n = 249) from multiple databases. It also identified transcription factors (TFs) independently associated with LSCC prognosis. Through Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses, differential expression genes of LSCC were deemed relevant to the extracellular matrix and its related structures or pathways, suggesting that the extracellular matrix plays an important role in LSCC. At the same time, several hub genes that may also have important roles in LSCC were identified via protein-protein interaction analysis, including CDC45, TPX2, AURKA, KIF2C, NUF, MUC1, MUC7, MUC4, MUC15, and MUC21. Eight unreported LSCC prognostic TFs - BCAT1, CHD4, FOXA2, GATA6, HNF1A, HOXB13, MAFF, and TCF4 - were screened via Kaplan-Meier curves. Cox analysis determined for the first time that HOXB13 expression and gender were independently associated with LSCC prognosis. Compared to control tissues, elevated expression of HOXB13 was found in LSCC tissues (standardized mean difference = 0.44, 95% confidence interval [0.13-0.76]). HOXB13 expression also makes it feasible to screen LSCC from non-LSCC (area under the curve = 0.77), and HOXB13 may play an essential role in LSCC by regulating HOXB7. In conclusion, HOXB13 may be a novel marker for LSCC clinical screening and treatment.
