RESUMO

Although MXene materials are considered an emerging research topic, they are receiving considerable interest because, like metals and graphene, they are good electronic conductors but with the particularity that they have a marked hydrophilic character. Having a structural organization and properties close to those of clay minerals (natural silicates typically with a lamellar morphology), they are sometimes referred to as "conducting clays" and exhibit colloidal, surface and intercalation properties also similar to those of clay minerals. The present contribution aims to inform and discuss the nature of MXenes in comparison with clay phyllosilicates, taking into account their structural analogies, outstanding surface properties and advanced applications. The current in-depth understanding of clay minerals may represent a basis for the future development of MXene-derived nanoarchitectures. Comparative examples of the preparation, and studies on the properties and applications of various nanoarchitectures based on clays and MXenes have been included in the present work.

RESUMO

Sepiolite and palygorskite fibrous clay minerals are 1D silicates featuring unique textural and structural characteristics useful in diverse applications, and in particular as rheological additives. Here we report on the ability of grinded sepiolite to generate highly viscous and stable hydrogels by sonomechanical irradiation (ultrasounds). Adequate drying of such hydrogels leads to low-density xerogels that show extensive fiber disaggregation compared to the starting sepiolite-whose fibers are agglomerated as bundles. Upon re-dispersion in water under high-speed shear, these xerogels show comparable rheological properties to commercially available defibrillated sepiolite products, resulting in high viscosity hydrogels that minimize syneresis. These colloidal systems are thus very interesting as they can be used to stabilize many diverse compounds as well as nano-/micro-particles, leading to the production of a large variety of composites and nano/micro-architectured solids. In this context, we report here various examples showing how colloidal routes based on sepiolite hydrogels can be used to obtain new heterostructured functional materials, based on their assembly to solids of diverse topology and composition such as 2D and 1D kaolinite and halloysite aluminosilicates, as well as to the 2D synthetic Mg,Al-layered double hydroxides (LDH).

RESUMO

Nitrogen-doped porous carbons were prepared using a chitosan biopolymer as both a carbon and nitrogen precursor and metallic salts (CaCl2 and ZnCl2-KCl) as a templating agent with the aim of evaluating their performance as catalyst supports. Mixtures of chitosan and templating salts were prepared by simple grinding subjected to pyrolysis and finally washed with water to remove the salts. The resulting materials were characterized, showing that homogeneous nitrogen doping of carbon was achieved (7-9% wt.) thanks to the presence of a nitrogen species in the chitosan structure. A lamellar morphology was developed with carbon sheets randomly distributed and folded on themselves, creating slit-shaped pores. Substantial porosity was observed in both the micropore and mesopore range with a higher surface area and microporosity in the case of the materials prepared by ZnCl2-KCl templating and a larger size of mesopores in the case of ZnCl2. Catalysts with well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles (around 10 nm in diameter size) were synthesized using the chitosan-based carbons obtained both by salt templating and direct chitosan pyrolysis and tested in the aqueous phase hydrodechlorination of 4-chlorophenol. The fast and total removal of 4-chlorophenol was observed in the case of catalysts based on carbons obtained by templating with CaCl2 and ZnCl2-KCl in spite of the low metal content of the catalysts (0.25% Pd, wt.).

RESUMO

Individual and combined photo(electro)chemical reduction treatments of graphene oxide thin films have been performed to modulate the type of defects introduced into the graphene sheets during the reduction. These were characterized by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies, nuclear reaction analysis and electrochemical methods. Illumination of the graphene oxide thin film electrodes with low irradiance simulated solar light provoked the photoassisted reduction of the material with negligible photothermal effects. The photoreduced graphene oxide displayed a fragmented sp2 network due to the formation of a high density of defects (carbon vacancies) and the selective removal of epoxides and hydroxyl groups. In contrast, the electrochemical reduction under mild polarization conditions favored the formation of sp3 defects over vacancies, with a preferential removal of carbonyl and carboxyl groups over hydroxyl/epoxides. Used in conjunction, mild photochemical and electrochemical treatments allowed the obtainment of reduced graphene oxides with varied reduction degrees (ca. C/O ratio ranging from 4.9 to 2.2), and surface defects. Furthermore, the electrochemical reduction prevented the formation of vacancies during the subsequent illumination step. In contrast, both types of defects were accumulated when the GO electrode was first exposed to illumination and then polarized.

RESUMO

Researchers, engineers, and medical doctors are made aware of the severity of the COVID-19 infection and act quickly against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 using a large variety of tools. In this review, a panoply of nanoscience and nanotechnology approaches show how these disciplines can help the medical, technical, and scientific communities to fight the pandemic, highlighting the development of nanomaterials for detection, sanitation, therapies, and vaccines. SARS-CoV-2, which can be regarded as a functional core-shell nanoparticle (NP), can interact with diverse materials in its vicinity and remains attached for variable times while preserving its bioactivity. These studies are critical for the appropriate use of controlled disinfection systems. Other nanotechnological approaches are also decisive for the development of improved novel testing and diagnosis kits of coronavirus that are urgently required. Therapeutics are based on nanotechnology strategies as well and focus on antiviral drug design and on new nanoarchitectured vaccines. A brief overview on patented work is presented that emphasizes nanotechnology applied to coronaviruses. Finally, some comments are made on patents of the initial technological responses to COVID-19 that have already been put in practice.

RESUMO

The present work refers to clay-graphene nanomaterials prepared by a green way using caramel from sucrose and two types of natural clays (montmorillonite and sepiolite) as precursors, with the aim of evaluating their potential use in hydrogen storage. The impregnation of the clay substrates by caramel in aqueous media, followed by a thermal treatment in the absence of oxygen of these clay-caramel intermediates gives rise to graphene-like materials, which remain strongly bound to the silicate support. The nature of the resulting materials was characterized by different techniques such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy and TEM, as well as by adsorption isotherms of N2, CO2 and H2O. These carbon-clay nanocomposites can act as adsorbents for hydrogen storage, achieving, at 298 K and 20 MPa, over 0.1 wt% of hydrogen adsorption excess related to the total mass of the system, and a maximum value close to 0.4 wt% of hydrogen specifically related to the carbon mass. The very high isosteric heat for hydrogen sorption determined from adsorption isotherms at different temperatures (14.5 kJ mol(-1)) fits well with the theoretical values available for hydrogen storage on materials that show a strong stabilization of the H2 molecule upon adsorption.

RESUMO

Two Gram-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacteria (strains CR-119(T) and CR-95(T)) were isolated from brackish sediments in the mouth of the river Velez in Malaga, southern Spain, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phenotypic tests showed that these strains were related to other Bacillus species at a similarity level of less than 87.6 %. Both strains are halotolerant, aerobic, chemoheterotrophic, motile with peritrichous flagella and biosurfactant producers. Their endospores are oval, subterminal and non-deforming structures. The predominant menaquinone in both strains is MK-7. The fatty-acid profiles of both strains contain large quantities of branched and saturated fatty acids. The major fatty acids (%) are 15 : 0 anteiso (32.4), 15 : 0 iso (16.8), 17 : 0 iso (13.4), 16 : 0 (11.5) and 17 : 0 anteiso (10.2) in strain CR-119(T) and 15 : 0 anteiso (37.5), 17 : 0 iso (16.0) and 17 : 0 anteiso (15.8) in strain CR-95(T). The G + C contents of strains CR-119(T) and CR-95(T) are 41.0 and 42.5 mol%, respectively. RAPD analysis confirmed the low degree of similarity between the two strains and also amongst other Bacillus species. 16S rRNA gene analysis of strain CR-119(T) showed the highest sequence similarity to be 97.4 %, with Bacillus mojavensis and Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii. In the case of strain CR-95(T), the maximum similarity value was 99.5 %, with B. mojavensis. DNA-DNA hybridization of strains CR-119(T) and CR-95(T) with the above species produced values lower than 46.9 %. Therefore, on the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic data and genomic distinctiveness, we conclude that these Bacillus strains merit classification as novel species, for which we propose the names Bacillus axarquiensis sp. nov. (type strain CR-119(T) = CECT 5688(T) = LMG 22476(T)) and Bacillus malacitensis sp. nov. (type strain CR-95(T) = CECT 5687(T) = LMG 22477(T)).

RESUMO

Two Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterial strains, CR-502T and CR-14b, which produce surfactant molecules are described. Phenotypic tests and phylogenetic analyses showed these strains to be members of the genus Bacillus and related to the species Bacillus atrophaeus, Bacillus mojavensis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus vallismortis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, although they differ from these species in a number of phenotypic characteristics. DNA-DNA hybridization confirmed that they show less than 20 % hybridization with the above-mentioned species and therefore represent a novel species of Bacillus. The DNA G+C content is 46.4 mol% in strain CR-502T and 46.1 mol% in strain CR-14b. The main fatty acids in strain CR-502T are 15 : 0 anteiso (32.70 %), 15 : 0 iso (29.86 %) and 16 : 0 (13.41 %). The main quinone in strain CR-502T is MK-7 (96.6 %). In the light of the polyphasic evidence gathered in this study, it is proposed that these strains be classified as a novel species of the genus Bacillus, with the name Bacillus velezensis sp. nov. The type strain (CR-502T=CECT 5686T=LMG 22478T) was isolated from a brackish water sample taken from the river Vélez at Torredelmar in Málaga, southern Spain.
