RESUMO

Large sample datasets of in situ evapotranspiration (ET) measurements with well documented data provenance and quality assurance are critical for water management and many fields of earth science research. We present a post-processed ET oriented dataset at daily and monthly timesteps, from 161 stations, including 148 eddy covariance flux towers, that were chosen based on their data quality from nearly 350 stations across the contiguous United States. In addition to ET, the data includes energy and heat fluxes, meteorological measurements, and reference ET downloaded from gridMET for each flux station. Data processing techniques were conducted in a reproducible manner using open-source software. Most data initially came from the public AmeriFlux network, however, several different networks (e.g., the USDA-Agricultural Research Service) and university partners provided data that was not yet public. Initial half-hourly energy balance data were gap-filled and aggregated to daily frequency, and turbulent fluxes were corrected for energy balance closure error using the FLUXNET2015/ONEFlux energy balance ratio approach. Metadata, diagnostics of energy balance, and interactive graphs of time series data are included for each station. Although the dataset was developed primarily to benchmark satellite-based remote sensing ET models of the OpenET initiative, there are many other potential uses, such as validation for a range of regional hydrologic and atmospheric models.

Rice paddies are one of the major sources of anthropogenic methane (CH4 ) emissions. The alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation management has been shown to reduce CH4 emissions and total global warming potential (GWP) (CH4 and nitrous oxide [N2 O]). However, there is limited information about utilizing AWD management to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from commercial-scale continuous rice fields. This study was conducted for five consecutive growing seasons (2015-2019) on a pair of adjacent fields in a commercial farm in Arkansas under long-term continuous rice rotation irrigated with either continuously flooded (CF) or AWD conditions. The cumulative CH4 emissions in the growing season across the two fields and 5 years ranged from 41 to 123 kg CH4 -C ha-1 for CF and 1 to 73 kg CH4 -C ha-1 for AWD. On average, AWD reduced CH4 emissions by 73% relative to CH4 emissions in CF fields. Compared to N2 O emissions, CH4 emissions dominated the GWP with an average contribution of 91% in both irrigation treatments. There was no significant variation in grain yield (7.3-11.9 Mg ha-1 ) or growing season N2 O emissions (-0.02 to 0.51 kg N2 O-N ha-1 ) between the irrigation treatments. The yield-scaled GWP was 368 and 173 kg CO2 eq. Mg-1 season-1 for CF and AWD, respectively, showing the feasibility of AWD on a commercial farm to reduce the total GHG emissions while sustaining grain yield. Seasonal variations of GHG emissions observed within fields showed total GHG emissions were predominantly influenced by weather (precipitation) and crop and irrigation management. The influence of air temperature and floodwater heights on GHG emissions had high degree of variability among years and fields. These findings demonstrate that the use of multiyear GHG emission datasets could better capture variability of GHG emissions associated with rice production and could improve field verification of GHG emission models and scaling factors for commercial rice farms.

Seventeen piglets were infected with a continuous intravenous infusion of live group B beta-hemolytic streptococci (GBS). Hemodynamic changes were recorded, and blood samples were drawn for measurement of thromboxane B2 (TxB2) (stable metabolite of thromboxane A2) and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha (stable metabolite of prostacyclin). Control animals (n = 9) received only bacteria, while treatment animals (n = 8) received indomethacin, 3 mg/kg IV, 15 min after the start of the bacterial infusion. Control animals responded to the bacteria within 15 min with marked elevation in mean pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa) from 15 +/- 8 to 39 +/- 6 mm Hg and decline in PaO2 from 80 +/- 11 to 51 +/- 6 mm Hg and cardiac output (CO) from 0.24 +/- 0.07 to 0.13 +/- 0.07 liters/min/kg. Mean arterial blood pressure (AoP) significantly decreased from baseline value of 95 +/- 13 to 51 +/- 32 mm Hg by 180 min. In animals treated with indomethacin, these changes were reversed or significantly attenuated. The hemodynamic changes were associated temporally with elevations in plasma concentrations of TxB2 or 6-keto-PGF1 alpha. In the first 60 min, TxB2 levels in both groups correlated with Ppa (r = 0.72, p less than 0.001) and PaO2 (r = -0.60, p less than 0.001). A strong negative correlation between TxB2 and CO was observed over the first 180 min (r = -0.73, p less than 0.001). There was a statistically significant correlation between AoP and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha concentration between 60 and 180 min (r = -0.54, p less than 0.002). Indomethacin improved the hemodynamic function in this model of GBS sepsis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The short-term effects of muscle relaxation with pancuronium bromide on arterial blood gas values, heart rate, and arterial blood pressure were studied in 49 neonates receiving mechanical ventilation. After pancuronium administration, mean PaO2 increased from 61.9 +/- 30.0 to 80.9 +/- 52.8 mm Hg (P = 0.006), mean PaCO2 decreased from 40.1 +/- 13.0 to 37.5 +/- 13.3 mm Hg (P = 0.03), and mean heart rate rose from 146.2 +/- 24.9 to 161.0 +/- 20.5 beats/min (P less than 0.001). Arterial blood pressure did not change significantly. When results were analyzed by diagnosis (meconium aspiration syndrome, hyaline membrane disease, pneumonia), only infants with meconium aspiration syndrome had a significant improvement in oxygenation (P = 0.008). Six of 18 patients with hyaline membrane disease responded to muscle relaxation, with a decrease in PaO2 of 10 mm Hg or more. No significant correlation was found between change in PaO2 and birth weight, gestational age, postnatal age, or change in heart rate. A weak correlation (r = -0.37, P less than 0.006) was observed between change in PaO2 and change in PaCO2. Although the reasons for the divergence in response in different groups of patients are not entirely clear, the risk of deterioration with pancuronium therapy should be kept in mind, particularly if treatment in an infant with hyaline membrane disease is being considered.
