RESUMO

PIP: The relationship between incest and prostitution is discussed in this article through a case study of a 23-year-old incest survivor in South Africa. The first part documents the 2.5-hour interview with Lara Newman (a pseudonym), the woman who was sexually abused by her maternal grandfather. Lara Newman defined herself as a "whore" and narrated how the experience of incestuous abuse can train a victim to become a prostitute. Her story began when her grandfather raped her at the age of 4 and then continued to sexually abuse her for 8 years, until she was 12 years old. She further described the impact of the incestuous abuse on her family relationships, her relationship with her husband, and other psychological consequences she suffered. The last part of this article provides an analysis of Lara's story, which cited relevant literature on the relationship between incest and prostitution.^ieng

RESUMO

Numerous dental remains of Nannopithex zuccolae, n. sp., from the terminal early Eocene locality of Prémontré (Aisne), France, show the lower anterior dentition to be similar to that of other Nannopithex. Similarities include enlarged I1, reduced I2, reduced lower canine, loss of P2, small P3 and large P4. Upper molars, P3 and P4 all present primitive characters, making this species the most primitive as well as the oldest known microchoerid.

RESUMO

Analysis of interviews obtained from a random sample of 930 adult women in San Francisco revealed that 17% or one out of approximately every six women who had a stepfather as a principal figure in her childhood years, was sexually abused by him. The comparable figures for biological fathers were 2% or one out of approximately 40 women. In addition, when a distinction was made between Very Serious Sexual Abuse (including experiences ranging from forced penile-vaginal penetration to non-forceful attempted fellatio, cunnilingus , and anal intercourse) and other less serious forms, 47% of the cases of sexual abuse by stepfathers were at the Very Serious level of violation compared with 26% by biological fathers. Possible explanations for these starting discrepancies are discussed, and some of the implications for remarriage are considered.

RESUMO

Pakicetus inachus from the early Eocene of Pakistan is the oldest and most primitive cetacean known. The dentition of Pakicetus resembles that of carnivorous mesonychid land mammals as well as middle Eocene cetaceans. The otic region of the cranium lacks characteristic specializations of whales necessary for efficient directional hearing under water. Pakicetus occurs with a land-mammal fauna in fluvial sediments bordering epicontinental Eocene remnants of the eastern Tethys seaway. Discovery of Pakicetus strengthens earlier inferences that whales originated from terrestrial carnivorous mammals and suggests that whales made a gradual transition from land to sea in the early Eocene, spending progressively more time feeding on planktivorous fishes in shallow, highly productive seas and embayments associated with tectonic closure of eastern Tethys.

RESUMO

Data obtained from a random sample of 930 adult women in San Francisco provide the soundest basis heretofore available for estimating the prevalence of intrafamilial and extrafamilial sexual abuse of female children. This article describes the methodology of this survey, as well as some of the key findings. For example: 16% of these women reported at least one experience of intrafamilial sexual abuse before the age of 18 years; 12% reported at least one such experience before the age of 14 years; 31% reported at least one experience of extrafamilial sexual abuse before the age of 18 years; and 20% reported at least one such experience before the age of 14 years. When both categories of sexual abuse are combined, 38% reported at least one experience before the age of 18 years; and 28% reported at least one such experience before the age of 14 years. Only 2% of the cases of intrafamilial and 6% of the cases of extrafamilial child sexual abuse were ever reported to the police. A plea is made for the urgent need to recognize the magnitude of the problem of child sexual abuse, and to act to prevent it.
