RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims at comparing the severity score assessed using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the first of December 2021 to first of February 2022, we conducted a single-center retrospective analysis on COVID-19 patients who accessed ED services. The hospital in question is a level II facility with a catchment area of around 200,000 people. According to the Italian recommendations, patients were divided into four groups based on the CT score of Micheal Chung. The sum of acute inflammatory lung lesions involving each lobe was scored as 1 (0-25%), 2 (26-50%), 3 (51-75%) or 4 (76-100%) on a visual quantitative assessment of CT. The total severity score (TSS) was determined by summing the five lobe scores. RESULTS: The study included 134 patients divided into two groups: 67 vaccinated and 67 unvaccinated people. 53 people had incomplete (single dose/double dose) immunization, while 14 people completed the vaccination cycle. It was discovered that the mean CT severity score was lower in fully vaccinated patients compared to partially vaccinated or unvaccinated patients. The mean CT score was significantly lower in fully vaccinated patients aged 60 compared to older patients. The mean CT score was higher in unvaccinated patients compared to fully vaccinated patients. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals who received three doses of COVID-19 vaccination had lower CT severity scores than patients who received only one dose of vaccine or no vaccines at all.

RESUMO

1. In C6 glioma cells exposed to chemical hypoxia a massive release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) occurred at 3 and 6 h, coupled with an increased number of propidium-iodide positive dead cells. 2. Extracellular Na+ removal, which activates the Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger as a Na+ efflux pathway and prevents Na+ entrance, significantly reduced LDH release and the number of propidium iodide positive C6 cells. 3. During chemical hypoxia, in the presence of extracellular Na+ ions, a progressive increase of [Ca2+]i occurred; in the absence of extracellular Na+ ions [Ca2+]i was enhanced to a greater extent. 4. The blockade of the Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger by the amiloride derivative 5-(N-4-chlorobenzyl)-2',4'-dimethylbenzamil (CB-DMB), lanthanum (La3+) and the Ca2+ chelator EGTA, completely reverted the protective effect exerted by the removal of Na+ ions on C6 glioma cells exposed to chemical hypoxia. 5. The inhibition of the Na(+)-Ca2+ antiporter enhanced chemical hypoxia-induced LDH release when C6 glioma cells were incubated in the presence of physiological concentrations of extracellular Na+ ions (145 mM), suggesting that the blockade of the Na(+)-Ca2+ antiporter during chemical hypoxia can lead to increased cell damage. 6. Collectively, these results suggest that activation of the Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger protects C6 glioma cells exposed to chemical hypoxia, whereas its pharmacological blockade can exacerbate cellular injury.

A development-specific protein (SSP) makes up about 35 to 40% of the total protein in sclerotia of the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The protein consists of three charge isomers, with one isomer making up 80 to 90% of the total. In vitro translation of poly(A)+ RNA isolated from cells in early stages of sclerotia formation revealed that 44% of the amino acids incorporated was into SSP. In vivo- and in vitro-synthesized forms of SSP migrated at identical rates on both isoelectric focusing and denaturing polyacrylamide gels, indicating that SSP was not synthesized as a larger precursor. This was significant because SSP accumulated in membrane-bound, organellelike structures which resemble protein bodies found in seeds of many higher plants.

RESUMO

Diffuse encephalitis occurred in a 2 year old girl, with activation of a chorioretinitis, which on clinical and serological grounds was taken to be caused by toxoplasma infection. The small patient presented clinically not only typical ocular lesions (bilateral chorioretinitis) but also neurological complications with status comatosus with some archaic reflexes, diffuse and marked hyperkinesis, right hemiparesis, and frequent epileptic seizures. The encephalitis and the acute ocular inflammation were partially resolved by treatment with spiramycin and cortisone. This is, presumably, an example of reactivation of congenital cerebral toxoplasmosis. A similar course of events was reported--as far as we know--in only two children.
