RESUMO

In this study, we developed a novel nanocomposite, polyurethane foam impregnated with zero-valent iron nanoparticles (PU@nZVI), for the effective removal of chromium(VI) from various water sources. The characterization of nanocomposite (PU@nZVI) was performed by XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM and FT-IR techniques. Using the response surface methodology, we optimized the removal conditions, achieving an optimal pH of 2 and a dose of 0.5 g/L. The PU@nZVI demonstrated an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 600.0 mg/g for Cr6+. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were best described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich isotherm, respectively. Significantly, the nanocomposite removed 99.98% of Cr6+ from tap water, 96.81% from industrial effluent, and 94.57% from treated sewage wastewater. Furthermore, the PU@nZVI maintained its efficiency over five adsorption-desorption cycles, highlighting its reusability. These results suggest that the PU@nZVI nanocomposite is a highly efficient and sustainable option for chromium(VI) removal in water treatment applications.

RESUMO

Black sand along the Red Sea is often composed of volcanic minerals and heavy minerals. The Red Sea region is known for its unique geological features, and black sand beaches can be found in various areas along its shores. The study presents a comprehensive semi-quantitative chemical analysis of black sand samples collected from various locations along the red sea, revealing significant variations in their elemental compositions. The main oxides were identified in each sample, determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses, indicate diverse mineralogical compositions. The spatial distribution of minerals at each site is depicted through mapping. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra offer information on the functional groups present in the samples, revealing the existence of hydroxyl groups, aliphatic compounds, and adsorbed water molecules. For Qusier-Elsharm Alqbly, Safaga, Marsa Alam, Gabal Alrosass, Hurghada Titanic, Hurghada Elahiaa, Gemsa, and Ras Elbehar samples, the results highlight the presence of various minerals, such as Quartz, Calcite, Titanium Dioxide, Magnetite, Hematite, Aluminum Oxide, Zirconium Dioxide, Chromium (III) Oxide, and others, providing insights into the geological characteristics of each location. The differences in mineral content among the examined sites are linked to the geological and mineralogical makeup of the source rocks upstream and midstream in the basins that discharge into the surveyed regions. So, variations in black sand concentrations among different locations offer insights into the geological and mineralogical diversity of the studied areas along the Red Sea coast. This study addresses the existing knowledge gap by focusing on the preliminary exploration and description of the occurrence, distribution, and composition of black sand along the Red Sea in Egypt. whereas the results provide valuable insights into the geological diversity of black sand deposits in the surveyed areas, underscoring the need for additional research and interpretation of these variations. Therefore, the in-depth examination of mineralogical composition and crystal structures establishes a foundation for future investigations in the field of geology and earth sciences.

RESUMO

A new optical sensor was developed for the rapid sensing of total phenolic content, which is simple, cheap, and sensitive, using the Eu(III)-(NTA)2-(Phen) complex [NTA = 1-(2-naphthoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoroacetone and Phen = 1,10 phenanthroline] as a luminescent probe at pH 7.5 using PIPES buffer. This method was based on luminescence quenching. The type of quenching during the reaction between the Eu(III)-(NTA)2-(Phen) complex and the phenolic compounds is dynamic quenching; the binding site is close to 1, and the reaction is endothermic, spontaneous, and involves hydrophobic attraction forces. The calibration curves were plotted using a sigmoidal fit giving an LOD of 0.01 µg mL-1, and the correlation coefficients are more than 0.99. For the first time, the time-resolved fluorescence technique was utilized in microtiter plates to enable the determination of 96 samples within two minutes with high sensitivity and selectivity. The proposed method was applied to three industrial wastewater samples and compared with the standard method for phenolic content determination, yielding high recoveries. This is the first luminescence method based on lanthanide complexes as probes for determining the total phenolic content in water samples.

RESUMO

The current work was designed to evaluate the pollution status of the coastline region of the Egyptian Red Sea through monitoring the trace elements in sediments and mussels (Brachidontes variabilis and Modiolus auriculatus) that sampled during winter and summer 2019 from nineteen stations along the investigated area. The analyzed elements showed an annual mean of 20.21, 2.08, 4.79, 46.41, 11.35, 18.14, 128.93 and 12,520.07 µg/g (sediments), 1.02, 0.39, 3.35, 23.73, 0.59, 1.14, 1.43 and 81.94 µg/g (B. variabilis) and 1.39, 0.47, 1.70, 24.69, 0.77, 1.66, 2.16 and 119.80 µg/g (M. auriculatus) for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn and Fe, respectively. The summer recorded highest values of all studied elements in the mussels' species with significant temporal variations (p < 0.05) for the most investigated elements. The pollution indices like CF, PLI, MPI, Igeo and EF were calculated to evaluate the elements contamination degree in the examined areas.

RESUMO

Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the basic anticancer drugs, nonetheless its use is restricted due to noxious side effects. Kidney failure is one of the main side effects that restrict its medical use. The current study assessed the nephroprotective effects of fenofibrate and pioglitazone against the renal injury induced by doxorubicin in rats and illustrated the probable mechanisms underlying these protective effects. For this purpose, Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing (200-230 g) were allocated into seven groups treated for 15 days as following: control (50% corn oil + 50% DMSO p.o), fenofibrate (100 mg/kg p.o) and pioglitazone (10 mg/kg p.o) as well as four groups of DOX (15 mg/kg i.p on 11th day). DOX groups included DOX alone and DOX with protective drugs fenofibrate, pioglitazone or both of them. As a result of doxorubicin nephrotoxicity; serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were remarkably elevated. Moreover, renal glutathione was significantly reduced while tissue lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-α, nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65), interleukin-1ß, p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) and caspase-3 (Casp-3) were significantly augmented. Treatment with fenofibrate and pioglitazone either alone or in combination markedly attenuated DOX-induced injury by suppression of oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis. The above-mentioned biochemical markers were affirmed by histological assessment. In conclusion, fenofibrate, pioglitazone, and their combination possess potential prophylactic effects against doxorubicin-induced renal injury through modulation of p38-MAPK/NF-κB p65 pathway with superiority to the combination.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive report describing the clinical and imaging features of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related acute invasive fungal sinusitis (AIFS) and associated comorbidities. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 25 patients (12 males and 13 females, mean age of 53.9±9.1 years). All patients had positive polymerase chain reaction test for COVID-19 and histopathological proof of AIFS. Patients underwent computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance examinations to assess sinonasal, orbital, and cranial spread. RESULTS: The most prevalent comorbidity among the study cohort was diabetes mellitus (DM). Twenty-one patients (84%) were diagnosed in the post-COVID-19 period after hospital discharge, with a mean interval of 19.1±9.2 days. Steroid treatment was given to 19 patients (76%). Orbital manifestations were the presenting symptoms in all patients, followed by facial edema, nasal discharge, and neurological symptoms. Sinonasal involvement ranged from mucosal thickening to complete sinus opacification by a predominant isodensity on CT, low T1, and high T2 signal intensity with variable enhancement patterns. Twenty-four patients had a unilateral orbital extension, and 12 patients showed signs of intracranial extension. Bone involvement was detected in 16 patients (64%). Follow-up scans in 18 patients (72%) showed rapid progression of the disease. Eight patients (32%) died, six from neurological complications and two from severe respiratory failure. CONCLUSION: Steroids, DM, and severe COVID-19 are the major risk factors of AIFS in the post-COVID-19 era. Imaging scans in all patients revealed different sinonasal, facial, orbital features, and intracranial involvement with rapid progression of the findings on follow-up scans.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with immune-mediated mechanism. Endocan is a soluble dermatan sulfate proteoglycan expressed by endothelium of blood vessels. AIMS: The present study aims to evaluate immunohistochemical localization of endocan in psoriatic skin in comparison with normal skin and to correlate its expression with the clinical and pathological data of psoriasis. PATIENTS/METHODS: Skin biopsies from 36 psoriatic patients and 40 normal subjects were taken and processed for immunohistochemical staining of endocan. RESULTS: Endocan was expressed in 63.9% and in 36.1% of epidermal keratinocytes and dermal endothelial and inflammatory cells of psoriatic skin, respectively, compared with its expression in 30% of epidermis of normal skin. Diffuse epidermal expression of endocan was in favor of cases with more angiogenesis and its intense expression was in favor of marked acanthosis and with cases affecting trunk as main presentation. Positive dermal endocan expression was significantly associated with marked parakeratosis and with more angiogenesis. CONCLUSION: Endocan is over-expressed in psoriatic skin from epidermal keratinocytes and dermal endothelial and inflammatory cells. Endocan enhances angiogenesis and proliferation of psoriatic skin contributing to pathogenic mechanisms of psoriasis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) represent a breakthrough in hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment as they directly inhibit HCV nonstructural (NS) proteins (NS3/4A, NS5A, and NS5B). However, ongoing debates exist regarding their relationship with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) whose incidence is widely debated among investigators. This study was conducted to identify host pharmacogenetic factors that may influence HCC incidence upon using HCV DAAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Details regarding 16 HCV DAAs were collected from literature and DrugBank database. Digital structures of these drugs were fed into the pharmacogenomics/pharmacovigilance in - silico pipeline (PHARMIP) to predict the genetic factors that may underpin HCC development. RESULTS: We identified 184 unique genes and 40 unique variants that may have key answers for the DAA/HCC paradox. These findings could be used in different methods to aid in the precise application of HCV DAAs and minimize the proposed risk for HCC. All results could be accessed at: https://doi.org/10.17632/8ws8258hn3.2. DISCUSSION: All the identified factors are evidence related to HCC and significantly predicted by PHARMIP as DAA targets. We discuss some examples of the methods of using these results to address the DAA/HCC controversy based on the following three primary levels: 1 - individual DAA drug, 2 - DAA subclass, and 3 - the entire DAA class. Further wet laboratory investigation is required to evaluate these results.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The causal relationship between obesity and high blood pressure is established; however, the detailed pathways for such association are still under research. This work aims to assess the changes in neprilysin, vasoconstrictor and vasodilatory molecules in obese hypertensive patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). PATIENTS: The present prospective study was done on 59 hypertensive obese patients in whom LGS was performed. Blood pressure, as well as blood samples for neprilysin, angiotensinogen, angiotensin II, renin, endothelin-1 "ET-1", aldosterone, atrial natriuretic peptide "ANP" and B-type natriuretic peptide "BNP", were assessed before and 15 months after surgery. Patients were divided into two groups according to the remission of hypertension (HTN). RESULTS: After 15 months, remission of hypertension was seen in 42 patients (71%). The declines in the following measurements were significantly higher in patients with remission than those with persistent HTN: aldosterone (p = .029567), angiotensin II (p < .000001), angiotensinogen (p = .000021), neprilysin (p = .000601), renin (p = .000454) and endothelin-1(p = .000030). There was a significantly higher increment in ANP (p = .000002) and a non-significant increment in BNP (p = .081740). Angiotensin II 15 months after LSG and Δ ANP % were significant independent predictors of persistent HTN. CONCLUSION: In the setting of LSG, aldosterone, angiotensinogen, angiotensin II, renin and neprilysin were significantly lower in patients with remission of HTN after 15 months than those with persistent HTN, and natriuretic peptides were significantly higher. A lower postoperative level of angiotensin II and a larger percentage increment of ANP are independently associated with hypertension remission after LSG.

RESUMO

Pharmacovigilance is the pharmacological science that focuses on the safe and appropriate use of drugs.Variability in response to drug therapy in both terms of safety and efficacy is highly related to patient's personal genomics. Hence, pharmacovigilance considers pharmacogenomics methodologies in the evaluation of medicinal products. The aim of this work is to introduce the pharmacovigilance/ pharmacogenomics insilico pipeline (PHARMIP) that uses the drug (or drug candidate) digital structure and the advances in bioinformatics tools and databases to figure-out the genetic factors underlying the drug reported adverse reactions (ADRs).PHARMIP uses user-friendly freely available bioinformatics resources to help pharmacovigilance and pharmacogenomics scientists with minimal bioinformatics experience to retrieve helpful information for their daily basis activities. Also, PHARMIP could help the advances in precision medicine in a drug-centric approach as it can be used to reveal genetic risk factors for certain drug ADRs. Domperidone was used as an example to the application of PHARMIP as the pipeline was initially developed during the insilico exploration of domperidone cardiotoxic ADRs. Method is composed of 3 main steps: •Preparing the drug off-label targets (OLT) list.•Retrieving the related diseases/ adverse reactions (DA) list.•Analysis of DA list to get answers.

RESUMO

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant primary bone tumour in humans and dogs. Several studies have established the vital role of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and its receptor (PTHR1) in bone formation and remodeling. In addition, these molecules play a role in the progression and metastasis of many human tumour types. This study investigated the expression of PTHR1 and PTHrP in canine OS tissues and assessed their prognostic value. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 50 dogs diagnosed with primary OS were immunolabeled with antibodies specific for PTHR1 and PTHrP. The immunostaining intensity of tumours from patients with OS was correlated with survival time. Both PTHR1 and PTHrP were detected in all OS samples (n = 50). Dogs with OS tumours showing high immunostaining intensity for PTHR1 (n = 36) had significantly shorter survival times (p = 0.028, Log Rank; p = 0.04, Cox regression) when compared with OS that had low immunostaining intensity for PTHR1 (n = 14).PTHrP immunostaining intensity did not correlate with survival time (p > 0.05). The results of this study indicate that increased expression of PTHR1 antigen in canine OS is associated with poor prognosis. This suggests that PTHR1 may be useful as a prognostic indicator in canine OS.

RESUMO

Mixed tumors are characterized by the histological identification of two or more cell types. Commonly, a mixture of epithelial and myoepithelial cells is included in abundant stroma, which can consist of myxoid, chondroid or bony matrices. Spontaneously arising mixed tumors are rare lesions in the human breast but are common in human salivary glands and canine mammary glands. Subtle histopathological characteristics and overlapping attributes of malignant lesions with other benign lesions can lead to a diagnostic challenge. Mixed tumors can present as benign or malignant. While malignant mixed tumors are quite rare in the human breast they have a poor prognosis. Benign mixed mammary tumors occur more frequently in female dogs than in humans and are usually associated with a good prognosis. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of mixed mammary tumors, across various mammalian species.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The progression of fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is a multifactorial process. The high adverse effects and the cost of standard health care increase the demand to discover new predictors for the progression of fibrosis in CHC patients. Our study aims to establish the relation between the angiogenic marker [vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) represented by the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and whether these 2 markers can be used as predictors for the progression of fibrosis in patients with CHC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses were used for examining the morphology and the expression of VEGF and α-SMA in 60 CHC biopsies procured from CHC patients. Multivariate analysis was used to correlate the protein expression with staging and grading of liver fibrosis. Cutoff values of α-SMA and VEGF were determined by the receiver operating characteristics curve. RESULTS: There was a positive correlation between VEGF and HSCs expressing α-SMA (ρ=0.287, P=0.026) and both factors were correlated with the stage of fibrosis (P<0.001). Using the receiver operating characteristics curve, both VEGF (area under the curve=0.71, P<0.006) and α-SMA (area under the curve=0.82, P<0.001) were positive predictors for moderate and severe fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the relation between VEGF expression and the activated HSCs denoted by the expression of α-SMA in CHC biopsies and together can be used as a predictor for the progression of fibrosis.

RESUMO

The 4-hydroxysalicylidenechitosan Schiff-base (2CS-Hdhba) was prepared by the condensation of 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde with chitosan, and its metal complexes, [M(2CS-dhba)Cl(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (M(III)=Fe, Ru, Rh), [M'(2CS-dhba)(AcO)(H(2)O)(2)] (M'(II)=Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), [Pd(2CS-dhba)Cl(H(2)O)] and [Au(2CS-dhba)Cl(2)], are reported. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, by spectral data (FTIR, solid-phase (13)C NMR, UV-vis and ESR spectroscopy), by morphological observations (SEM and XRD), and by magnetic and thermal measurements. The Schiff base (2CS-Hdhba) behaves as a bidentate chelate with a single negative charge. The azomethine nitrogen and the deprotonated 2-hydroxy centres with the pendant glucosamine hydroxy functionality play no role in coordination. The dissociation constants of 2CS-Hdhba and the stability constants of some of its metal complexes have been determined pH-metrically.
