RESUMO

This study seeks a comprehensive exploration of genome-wide selective processes impacting morphometric traits across diverse cattle breeds, utilizing an array of statistical methods. Morphometric traits, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative variables, play a pivotal role in characterizing and selecting livestock breeds based on their external appearance, size, and physical attributes. While qualitative traits, such as color, horn structure, and coat type, contribute to adaptive features and breed identification, quantitative traits like body weight and conformation measurements bear a closer correlation with production characteristics. This study employs advanced genotyping technologies, including the Illumina BovineSNP50 Bead Chip and next-generation sequencing methods like Reduced Representation sequencing, to identify genomic signatures associated with these traits. We applied four intra-population methods to find evidence of selection, such as Tajima's D, CLR, iHS, and ROH. We found a total of 40 genes under the selection signature, that were associated with morphometric traits in five cattle breeds (Kankrej, Tharparkar, Nelore, Sahiwal, and Gir). Crucial genes such as ADIPDQ, DPP6, INSIG1, SLC35D2 in Kankrej, LPL, ATP6V1B2, CDC14B in Tharparkar, HPSE2, PLAG1 in Nelore, PCSK1, PRKD1 in Sahiwal, and GNAQ, HPCAL1 in Gir were identified in our study. This approach provides valuable insights into the genetic basis of variations in body weight and conformation traits, facilitating informed selection processes and offering a deeper understanding of the evolutionary and domestication processes in diverse cattle breeds.

The domestication of animals marks a pivotal moment in human history, profoundly influencing our demographic and cultural progress. This process has led to significant genetic, behavioral, and physical changes in livestock species compared to their wild ancestors. Understanding the evolutionary history and genetic diversity of livestock species is crucial, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has emerged as a robust marker for investigating molecular diversity in animals. Its highly conserved gene content across animal species, minimal duplications, absence of introns, and short intergenic regions make mtDNA analysis ideal for such studies. Mitochondrial DNA analysis has uncovered distinct cattle domestication events dating back to 8000 years BC in Southwestern Asia. The sequencing of water buffalo mtDNA in 2004 provided important insights into their domestication history. Caprine mtDNA analysis identified three haplogroups, indicating varied maternal origins. Sheep, domesticated 12,000 years ago, exhibit diverse mtDNA lineages, suggesting multiple domestication events. Ovine mtDNA studies revealed clades A, B, C, and a fourth lineage, group D. The origins of domestic pigs were traced to separate European and Asian events followed by interbreeding. In camels, mtDNA elucidated the phylogeographic structure and genetic differentiation between wild and domesticated species. Horses, domesticated around 3500 BC, show significant mtDNA variability, highlighting their diverse origins. Yaks exhibit unique adaptations for high-altitude environments, with mtDNA analysis providing insights into their adaptation. Chicken mtDNA studies supported a monophyletic origin from Southeast Asia's red jungle fowl, with evidence of multiple origins. This review explores livestock evolution and diversity through mtDNA studies, focusing on cattle, water buffalo, goat, sheep, pig, camel, horse, yak and chicken. It highlights mtDNA's significance in unraveling maternal lineages, genetic diversity, and domestication histories, concluding with insights into its potential application in improving livestock production and reproduction dynamics.

Morgagni hernias (MHs) are rare and constitute about 2% of all diaphragmatic hernias. Although uncommon, it has potential for considerable morbidity if the diagnosis is missed. An elderly woman with known history of chronic asthma and constipation presented to us with vague right-sided chest pain. General physical examination was unremarkable and coincidentally diagnosed to have diabetes mellitus. Chest roentgenogram posteroanterior view revealed a right paracardiac opacity and right lateral view showed the opacity in the peridiaphragmatic area of anterior mediastinum. Computed tomographic scan of the chest and abdomen revealed a right-sided MH containing omental fat. Standard right posterolateral thoracotomy was done, and there was a rent at the medial end of the xiphoid process with hernia sac containing the omentum, which was compressing adjacent lungs and heart. The sac was opened; redundant omentum was resected, and rent closed with intercostal muscle with prolene. MH being rare must be addressed with appropriate investigation to prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality.

AIM: Yucca schidigera extract has been successfully used as feed additives in the poultry industry. It enhances the growth and productivity in broiler production. Hence, the present study was designed to analyze the effect of Y. schidigera extract in growth, carcass quality and behavior along with its economical utility in broiler rearing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total, 120 numbers of day-old broiler chicks of equal sex ratio were randomly divided into Yucca supplemented treatment and control group, each having 60 birds in three replications of 20 numbers. The feeding management and rearing conditions were similar for all the groups as per the standard except the Yucca supplementation in the treatment group @ 125 mg/kg of feed. The parameters with respect to growth, carcass, behavior, and litter content were recorded as per standard procedures. RESULTS: The Yucca supplementation can effectively enhance growth of 173 g in 6(th) week by utilizing lesser feed intake than control group, which ultimately proves better feed conversion rate, protein efficiency ratio, and energy efficiency ratio in broiler production. Eviscerated weight of 58.50% for the treatment group was significantly higher (p<0.05) than 54.10% in the control group. The breast meat yield of Yucca group (32.23%) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than control (30.33%). More frequency of agonistic behavioral expressions was noticed in the control group than the treatment group. A profit of 43.68% was received by usage of Yucca supplementation in the diet on live weight basis. Numerically, lower percentage of moisture was present in Yucca treated group than the control. CONCLUSION: From this study, it can be concluded that Yucca supplementation has an important role in augmenting broiler's growth performance, efficiency to utilize feed, protein and energy, and survivability. Hence, use of Yucca powder in broiler ration could be beneficial to maintain the litter quality, which directly enhances the productivity in broiler production without any adverse effect.

Tuberculosis continues to be the biggest public health problem worldwide. Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis (TVC) is a verrucose form of cutaneous tuberculosis that occurs in previously sensitised individuals due to exogenous reinfection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium bovis, and it reflects good cell-mediated immunity. An elderly man presented with multiple fungating growths, which were painless but associated with mild itching and serous discharge, on the right foot for 40 years. The lesions were free from deeper structures and no inguinal lymphadenopathy was observed. A provisional diagnosis of epithelioma was made based on the features described. However, incisional biopsy indicated that the lesions were tuberculous. As part of the anti-tubercular therapy, the lesions were excised and the wounds covered with split-thickness skin graft. The patient's recovery was uneventful, with no graft loss or infection reported. This case illustrates the importance of recognising cutaneous forms of tuberculosis, especially TVC, as an important differential diagnosis of epithelioma.

Spontaneous perforation of uterus is rare, its incidence being about 0.01%-0.5%. We report a rare case of diffuse peritonitis and pneumoperitoneum caused by spontaneously perforated pyometra. A 50-year postmenopausal lady with abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital. Laparotomy was performed because of the suspicion of gastrointestinal perforation with generalized peritonitis. At laparotomy about 1,500 ml of pus present in peritoneal cavity and whole of alimentary tract and gallbladder were normal.A total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingooopherectomy was performed. Histopathological study revealed chronic suppurative endometritis with myometritis of the uterus with no evidence of malignancy. Although spontaneously perforated pyometra is rare, a perforated pyometra should therefore be considered when elderly female presents with acute abdomen.
