RESUMO

The present communication deals with the adsorption of tyramine neurotransmitter over the surface of pristine, Boron (B) and Silicon (Si) doped fullerenes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to investigate tyramine adsorption on the surface of fullerenes in terms of stability, shape, work function, electronic characteristics, and density of state spectra. The most favourable adsorption configurations for tyramine have been computed to have adsorption energies of - 1.486, - 30.889, and - 31.166 kcal/mol, respectively whereas for the rest three configurations, it has been computed to be - 0.991, - 6.999, and - 8.796 kcal/mol, respectively. The band gaps for all six configurations are computed to be 2.68, 2.67, 2.06, 2.17, 2.07, and 2.14 eV, respectively. The band gap of pristine, B and Si doped fullerenes shows changes in their band gaps after adsorption of tyramine neurotransmitters. However, the change in band gaps reveals more in B doped fullerene rather than pristine and Si doped fullerenes. The change in band gaps of B and Si doped fullerenes leads a change in the electrical conductivity which helps to detect tyramine. Furthermore, natural bond orbital (NBO) computations demonstrated a net charge transfer of 0.006, 0.394, and 0.257e from tynamine to pristine, B and Si doped fullerenes.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the demographic and clinical profile and ascertain the determinants of outcome among hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) adult patients enrolled in the National Clinical Registry for COVID-19 (NCRC). METHODS: NCRC is an on-going data collection platform operational in 42 hospitals across India. Data of hospitalized COVID-19 patients enrolled in NCRC between 1st September 2020 to 26th October 2021 were examined. RESULTS: Analysis of 29 509 hospitalized, adult COVID-19 patients [mean (SD) age: 51.1 (16.2) year; male: 18 752 (63.6%)] showed that 15 678 (53.1%) had at least one comorbidity. Among 25 715 (87.1%) symptomatic patients, fever was the commonest symptom (72.3%) followed by shortness of breath (48.9%) and dry cough (45.5%). In-hospital mortality was 14.5% (n = 3957). Adjusted odds of dying were significantly higher in age group ≥60 years, males, with diabetes, chronic kidney diseases, chronic liver disease, malignancy and tuberculosis, presenting with dyspnoea and neurological symptoms. WHO ordinal scale 4 or above at admission carried the highest odds of dying [5.6 (95% CI: 4.6-7.0)]. Patients receiving one [OR: 0.5 (95% CI: 0.4-0.7)] or two doses of anti-SARS CoV-2 vaccine [OR: 0.4 (95% CI: 0.3-0.7)] were protected from in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS: WHO ordinal scale at admission is the most important independent predictor for in-hospital death in COVID-19 patients. Anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccination provides significant protection against mortality.

Both intracellular and extracellular heat shock protein-90 (Hsp90) family proteins (α and ß) have been shown to support tumour progression. The tumour-supporting activity of the intracellular Hsp90 is attributed to their N-terminal ATPase-driven chaperone function. What molecular entity determines the extracellular function of secreted Hsp90 and the distinction between Hsp90α and Hsp90ß was unclear. Here we demonstrate that CRISPR/Case9 knocking out Hsp90α nullifies tumour cells' ability to migrate, invade and metastasize without affecting the cell survival and growth. Knocking out Hsp90ß leads to tumour cell death. Extracellular supplementation with recombinant Hsp90α, but not Hsp90ß, protein recovers tumourigenicity of the Hsp90α-knockout cells. Sequential mutagenesis identifies two evolutionarily conserved lysine residues, lys-270 and lys-277, in the Hsp90α subfamily that determine the extracellular Hsp90α function. Hsp90ß subfamily lacks the dual lysine motif and the extracellular function. Substitutions of gly-262 and thr-269 in Hsp90ß with lysines convert Hsp90ß to a Hsp90α-like protein. Newly constructed monoclonal antibody, 1G6-D7, against the dual lysine region of secreted Hsp90α inhibits both de novo tumour formation and expansion of already formed tumours in mice. This study suggests an alternative therapeutic approach to target Hsp90 in cancer, that is, the tumour-secreted Hsp90α, instead of the intracellular Hsp90α and Hsp90ß.

Molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of Brevibacillus borstelensis to survive and adapt to various environmentally relevant stresses are poorly understood. To define organism's molecular response to low temperature, gene expression profile of B. borstelensis at 20 °C was carried out by high-throughput sequencing technology. A total of 4579 transcripts with a maximum transcript length of 9919 bp were annotated. Gene expression profiling identified 712 genes that were significantly up- or down-regulated during cold shock. Functional categorization of the differentially expressed genes revealed that response to stress, regulation of transcription, transport, signal transduction and cytoplasm were the differentially regulated processes. The microbial stress responsive genes (hsp90, hslU, grpE, dnaK, dnaJ, hslV) and genes under regulatory adaptive responses (rpoN) were identified. The gene encoding cold shock protein purine nucleoside phosphorylase was found to be remarkably up-regulated. RT-PCR experiments carried out on genes expressed under cold shock independently verified the transcriptome data results. In addition, a large number of genes encoding hypothetical protein were identified. The brief survey of the transcripts obtained in response to cold shock underlines the survival strategy of thermophilic bacteria exposed to low temperature environment, which is further helpful in generating genetic information associated with this bacteria.

Growth of ZnO nano and microstructures were carried out by low temperature hydrothermal method on glass and silicon substrates without seed layer. Crystallographic orientation and morphology of the samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The transmittance measurements were done by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and a Raman spectrometer was also deployed to understand the vibrational properties of ZnO nanocrystals. XRD and Raman studies showed the formation of hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO on both the substrates. Cactus and needle like nanostructures forming rosette superstructure were observed for ZnO on glass substrate. On Si(100), nanorods, tetrapods and multipodes were found with smaller crystallite size. More preferential growth and crystalline nature of ZnO on silicon substrate is discussed on the basis of lattice compatibility between ZnO and Si. The role of interface SiO2 layer, the effective growth mechanism and properties of these nanostructures are also discussed.

Nonionic surfactant as liquid organic template and tetraethoxysilane as silica precursor were used for the synthesis of mesoporous silica with ordered arrangement of nanopores (diameters are about 1-6 nm). The synthesized mesoporous silica was used as the template for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles using zinc acetylacetonate as ZnO precursor. The as synthesized ZnO incorporated in the mesoporous silica nanocomposite were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, TEM and Photoluminescent spectrum. ZnO introduction has no extensive influence on the mesoporous structure of silica. Quantum confinement effects are observed in the case of ZnO nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous silica. The particle size of ZnO is about 3.2 nm. The band gap is broadening to 3.47 eV.

RESUMO

Performance of a microwave driven upper hybrid resonance multicusp plasma source as a volume negative ion source is reported. Microwaves are directly launched into the plasma chamber predominantly in the TE(11) mode. The source is operated at different discharge conditions to obtain the optimized negative H(-) ion current which is ∼33 µA (0.26 mA∕cm(2)). Particle balance equations are solved to estimate the negative ion density, which is compared with the experimental results. Future prospects of the source are discussed.

In recent years, there have been significant advances in the clinical management of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD)--a rapidly progressing and potentially blinding degenerative eye disease. Wet AMD is responsible for more than half of registered severe sight impairment (blindness) in the United Kingdom, and patients who are being treated for wet AMD require frequent and long-term follow-up for treatment to be most effective. The clinical workload associated with the frequent follow-up required is substantial. Furthermore, as more new patients are diagnosed and the population continues to age, the patient population will continue to increase. It is thus vital that clinical services continue to adapt so that they can provide a fast and efficient service for patients with wet AMD. This Action on AMD document has been developed by eye health-care professionals and patient representatives, the Action on AMD group. It is intended to highlight the urgent and continuing need for change within wet AMD services. This document also serves as a guide for eye health-care professionals, NHS commissioners, and providers to present possible solutions for improving NHS retinal and macular services. Examples of good practice and service development are considered and can be drawn upon to help services meet the recommended quality of care and achieve best possible outcomes.

In this work, we have synthesized multiwall nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (MW-NCNTs) with Fe-catalysts by the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process @950 degrees C and subsequently functionalized with chlorine and oxygen. The dia-magnetic behavioral M-H loop of non-functionalized MW-NCNTs were turn into ferromagnetic behaviors by the process of chlorination and oxidation respectively; which were characterized by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer within the temperature range 5-300 K. A prominent cusp like behavior is also observed at around approximately 45 K in M(FC) and M(ZFC) measurements confirming the ferromagnetic behaviors of these MW-NCNTs after chlorination and oxidation.

Centchroman (CC; 67/20; INN: Ormeloxifene) is a non-steroidal antiestrogen extensively used as a female contraceptive in India. In the present study, we report the anti-proliferative effect of CC in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells. CC inhibited cell proliferation in a dose dependent manner at 24 h of treatment. Further studies showed that CC treatment induced apoptosis, inhibited Akt/mTOR and signal transducers and activators of transcription protein 3 (STAT3) signaling, altered proteins associated with cell cycle regulation and DNA damage and inhibited colony forming efficiency of HNSCC cells. In addition, CC displayed anti-proliferative activity against a variety of non-HNSCC cell lines of diverse origin. The ability of CC to serve as a dual-inhibitor of Akt/mTOR and STAT3 signaling warrants further studies into its role as a therapeutic strategy against HNSCC.

Obstetric fistula is the most devastating form of maternal morbidity. It is an opening in the wall of vagina connecting to bladder or to rectum due to prolonged obstructed labour without timely medical assistance. A few research studies carried out in India and recently conducted DLHS-3 survey (2007-08) has information on obstetric fistula that gives scope for further research. This paper examines prevalence of obstetric fistula and its correlates using DLHS-3 data for selected states in India. Ever experience of obstetric fistula among women in these states ranges from 0.3 percent to 3.4 percent, being highest in Uttarakhand. Women living in rural areas have higher chance of obstetric fistula. Age and physical maturity is important factor in the occurrence of fistula and it is found that those women who were below 18 years at the time of their first birth have higher risk of fistula in comparison to those who had child at 18 or above years. In addition to this, those having problems at the time of delivery are around two times more likely to have fistula. Auxulary Nurse Midwife can be key players in the early detection and referral of cephalo-pelvic disproportion, malpresentation and prolonged, obstructed labour cases.

BACKGROUND: An effort has been made in this paper to examine the impact of community and household vis-à-vis individual-level variables on immunization coverage among Indian children. METHODS: National Family Health Survey-2 data set has been used for the analysis. Multilevel regression analyses have been used to explore the relative effects of community-, household- and individual-level factors on immunization coverage. Three community-level variables, i.e. availability of health facilities, availability of all-weather roads and information, education and communication (IEC) activities conducted during last year, are included in this analysis. RESULTS: Availability of health facility and information, education and communication activities plays a significant role in determining the level of immunization coverage among children. Even with community-level variables in the model, individual-level variables, i.e. parent's education, birth order of child and number of antenatal care visits, retain their predictive role for the potential immunization coverage. CONCLUSIONS: Universal immunization can be achieved by providing services at community level and information about the available services and their benefits to the community. There is a considerable, unexplained variation in the immunization coverage between different communities, even in the most complex model used in this study, which could explain the entire heterogeneity of immunization coverage among Indian states.

Care of persons with haemophilia (PWH) in western countries is the responsibility of the government of those countries with or without funding from health insurers. Haemophilia societies in western countries work as pressure groups to ensure better care, and they disseminate information on the disease and some of the societies even support medical research for haemophilia care. In India, Haemophilia Federation of India (HFI) was established in 1982 with few haemophilia families and sympathizers of their cause; subsequently more than 65 chapters involving more than 12 500 PWH came up under HFI. HFI and its constituent chapters are unique in the world in the sense that they are not only trying to involve state and federal government to take responsibility for delivering haemophilia care, but they are also using various innovative and integrative techniques to deliver haemophilia care to PWH themselves, till the time federal and state governments of the country make suitable arrangement for their care. In this study, several of these approaches are discussed with the understanding that 80% of worlds' haemophilia population needs similar help, and the national haemophilia organizations (NMO) of various developing countries will find some of the approaches useful and adaptable to their own circumstances.

Micron size Fe3O4 powders were chemically prepared and processed by radio frequency (13.56 MHz) oxygen plasma irradiation technique at different elevated temperatures using low radio frequency (RF) power level. Low magnetic field RF superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetization studies were performed up to a maximum magnetic field of 100 Oe, which was well below the magnetic field tolerance factor of human beings and at different temperatures (down to 5 K). Heat-treated powders in RF oxygen plasma showed significant changes in blocking temperature, magnetization and susceptibility, which are important parameters for bio-applications. It is observed that blocking temperature is decreased under identical RF heat treatment in oxygen plasma and noted to be dependent on average particle size. Microscopic rise in electron temperature during RF heating may likely to enhance the electron-hopping rate between Fe(+2) and Fe(+3) in the octahedral site of Fe3O4 molecular crystal structure, which in turn exhibit changes in blocking temperature including low field magnetization and susceptibility. These properties of Fe3O4 fine powder are likely to play important role in generating and processing biocompatible Ferro-fluid down to nanoscopic size for biomaterials applications.
