RESUMO

We experimentally confirmed the threshold behavior and scattering length scaling law of the three-body loss coefficients in an ultracold spin-polarized gas of ^{6}Li atoms near a p-wave Feshbach resonance. We measured the three-body loss coefficients as functions of temperature and scattering volume, and we found that the threshold law and the scattering length scaling law hold in limited temperature and magnetic field regions. We also found that the breakdown of the scaling laws is due to the emergence of the effective-range term. This work is an important first step towards a full understanding of the loss of identical fermions with p-wave interactions.

RESUMO

A case of asymptomatic right gastroepiploic artery and vein aneurysms with an arteriovenous (AV) fistula coexisting with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is presented. A 68-year-old man was referred for treatment of AAA (6 cm in diameter) and he was incidentally diagnosed as having right gastroepiploic artery and venous aneurysms (3 cm and 8 cm in diameter, respectively) with an AV fistula. Resection of the aneurysms and closure of the fistula were successfully completed with AAA repair. He had a history of gastrectomy, and these gastroepiploic aneurysms with an AV fistula were considered a late complication due to mass ligation of vessels during gastrectomy.

RESUMO

In many medical institutes the treatment for advanced (not resectable or radical grade C) or recurrent gastric cancer seems to be based on a regional perspective or prognostic restriction, and rarely on large-scale clinical studies; instead the selection is based on effective cases reported in the literature or on own.s own. In the current situation, chemotherapy using new anti-cancer drugs since S-1 has actually appeared to improve the prognosis or to maintain better QOL. We examined 46 cases (28 advanced (not resectable or radical grade C) cases and 18 recurrent cases after curative operation) during the period from January 2001 to December 2005. In 27 chemotherapy cases (1-year survival 52.5%, 2-year survival 31.5%, 3-year survival 19.5%, and MST=344 day), the survival time was significantly extended compared to 19 cases without chemotherapy (1-year survival 10.5% and MST=102 day) (p<0.0001). In the 27 chemotherapy cases, between 5 performance status (PS) 0 cases and 8 PS 1 cases, there was no significant difference in survival. But in 12 PS 2 cases, survival was significantly shorter smaller than that of PS 0 or PS 1 cases (p<0.05, p<0.001). Also, the period in the hospital during survival time of 6 cases, 2-year survival or more, was significantly shorter than that of 10 less than 1-year survival cases treated with chemotherapy. These findings led us to conclude that chemotherapy using new anti-cancer drug since S-1 showed excellent QOL in addition to longer survival benefits at the present time, when a standard treatment for to advanced or recurrent gastric cancer has not yet been established. It seemed that prognostic improvement by maintaining further excellent QOL could be expected if standard treatments based on the results of large-scale clinical studies were established.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ischemic preconditioning (IP) improves tissue tolerance to prolonged ischemia. In this study, we investigated the functional effect of IP on skeletal muscle of rat hind limb by means of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and by measuring myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four separate protocol groups according to different preparations prior to 2 h of global ischemia: a group of ischemic reperfusion without any preparation (I/R), ischemic reperfusion with ischemic preconditioning (IP+IR), ischemic reperfusion with adenosine infusion (ADO+I/R), and sham operation. Ischemia and ischemic preconditioning were induced by clamping infrarenal abdominal aorta and left common iliac artery. For each rat, an exercise test of gastrocnemius muscles was performed by stimulating sciatic nerve before and after global ischemia while performing NIRS. MPO activity of ischemic muscles was also measured. RESULTS: Half-resaturation time after exercise and MPO activity were significantly improved in IP+IR and ADO+I/R groups. Difference of oxyhemoglobin during exercise was also improved in the IP+IR group. CONCLUSION: This study has demonstrated that IP provides the protective effect on in vivo skeletal muscle oxygenation during exercise.
