RESUMO

Harnessing complex body dynamics has long been a challenge in robotics, particularly when dealing with soft dynamics, which exhibit high complexity in interacting with the environment. Recent studies indicate that these dynamics can be used as a computational resource, exemplified by the McKibben pneumatic artificial muscle, a common soft actuator. This study demonstrates that bifurcations, including periodic and chaotic dynamics, can be embedded into the pneumatic artificial muscle, with the entire bifurcation structure using the framework of physical reservoir computing. These results suggest that dynamics not present in training data can be embedded through bifurcation embedment, implying the capability to incorporate various qualitatively different patterns into pneumatic artificial muscle without the need to design and learn all required patterns explicitly. Thus, this study introduces a novel approach to simplify robotic devices and control training by reducing reliance on external pattern generators and the amount and types of training data needed for control.

RESUMO

Reintroducing apex predators is an important approach in ecosystem restoration; however, it is challenging. Wolves (Canis lupus) were exterminated in Japan around 1900, and since then, there has been a lack of top predators throughout the country. Currently, the wild ungulate population is increasing, causing agricultural and forest damage. This has triggered an ongoing debate among researchers and nongovernmental organizations on whether wolves should be reintroduced to promote self-regulating biodiverse ecosystems. We conducted a nationwide survey to examine public attitudes toward wolf reintroduction (WR) in Japan. We sent online questionnaires to 88,318 citizens across the country. Among the 12,028 respondents, excluding those with invalid or incomplete answers and unqualified respondents, we obtained and analyzed 7500 responses that were representative of Japanese citizens in terms of some key sociodemographic attributes. More respondents disagreed with WR (39.9%) than agreed (17.1%), and many respondents (43.0%) were undecided. Structural equation modeling revealed that risk perceptions affected public attitudes, implying that the greater the perceived threat of wolf attacks, the less likely people are to support WR. In contrast, attitudes toward wolves (e.g., "I like wolves.") influenced by wildlife value orientation and beliefs about the ecological role of wolves (e.g., controlling deer populations) positively affected public attitudes toward WR. Those who had a positive attitude toward WR showed intentions to engage in behaviors that support WR. Our results suggest that the dissemination of information related to the ecological role of wolves and the development of a more mutualistic mindset in people could positively influence public support for WR in Japan.


Actitudes e intenciones públicas respecto a la reintroducción de lobos en Japón Resumen La reintroducción de superdepredadores es una estrategia importante para la restauración de los ecosistemas; sin embargo, representa muchos retos. Los lobos (Canis lupus) fueron exterminados en Japón alrededor de 1900 y desde entonces no ha habido superdepredadores en el país. Hoy en día, la población silvestre de ungulados está incrementando y ocasionando daño agrícola y forestal. Esto ha detonado un debate entre los investigadores y las organizaciones no gubernamentales sobre si se debiesen reintroducir lobos para promover ecosistemas biodiversos autorregulados. Realizamos una encuesta nacional para analizar las actitudes públicas respecto a la reintroducción de lobos (RL) en Japón. Enviamos 88,318 cuestionarios virtuales a ciudadanos de todo el país. De los 12,028 respondientes, excluyendo a aquellos con respuestas inválidas o incompletas y a los respondientes no calificados, obtuvimos y analizamos 7500 respuestas representativas del ciudadano japonés en términos de algunas características sociodemográficas importantes. Hubo más respondientes en contra (39.9%) que a favor (17.1%) de la RL y todavía más respondientes (43.0%) no estaban decididos. El modelo de ecuación estructural reveló que las percepciones de riesgo impactaron sobre las actitudes públicas, lo que implica que entre mayor sea la amenaza percibida de los ataques de lobos, es menos probable que la gente apoye la RL. Agricultural fields in university campuses can improve urban nutrition security, increase greenery, and provide opportunities for students to grow crops and enhance self-management skills. We conducted student surveys among freshmen in two different years (2016 and 2020) to understand their willingness to pay (WTP) for donations toward student-led agricultural activities. In order to mitigate the social desirability bias, we also asked students' inferred WTP and compared that with conventional WTP. We found that inferred values could determine more conservative and realistic estimations of students' donations than conventional WTP. Full model regression analysis using logit model estimation showed that students' interest and engagement in pro-environmental behaviors increased WTP for student-led agricultural activities. In conclusion, such projects are economically feasible through student donations.

Here, we show that AU-1, spirostanol saponin isolated from Agavaceae plants, causes a transient increase in cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKI) p21/Cip1 through the upregulation of miRNAs, miR-34 and miR-21. AU-1 stimulated p21/Cip1 expression without exerting cytotoxicity against different types of carcinoma cell lines. In renal adenocarcinoma ACHN cells, AU-1 transiently elevated the expression level of p21/Cip1 protein without marked increases in p21/Cip1 mRNA levels. Rapid and transient increases in miR-34 and miR-21, both of which are known to upregulate p21/Cip1, were observed in AU-1-treated cells. Inhibitor for miR-34 and for miR-21 significantly blocked the AU-1-caused increase in p21/Cip1, indicating that elevation of p21/Cip1 protein by AU-1 is dependent on these microRNAs. We further clarified that NAD-dependent deacetylase SIRT1, a direct target of miR-34, is decreased by the treatment with AU-1. Furthermore, we found that SIRT1-knockdown increases p21/Cip1 protein levels in an miR-21-dependent manner. On the other hand, ectopic expression of p21/Cip1 resulted in the lowered expression of miR-34 and miR-21, suggesting that reciprocal regulation exists between p21/Cip1 and these miRNAs. We propose that the following feedback network composed of miR-34/SIRT1/miR-21/p21 is triggered by the treatment with AU-1: in cells treated with AU-1, transient elevation of miR-34 leads to the downregulation of SIRT1, thereby miR-21 is freed from SIRT1-dependent suppression. Then, elevated miR-21 upregulates p21/Cip1 protein, followed by the suppression of miR-34 expression.

OBJECTIVES: First, to examine the perioperative association between increased cardiac index (CI) measured using three-dimensional echocardiography (CI3D), two-dimensional echocardiography (CI2D), and FloTrac/Vigileo (CIFT) (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) after cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and decreased brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) 6 months after CRT. Second, to evaluate the accuracy and tracking ability of CI2D and CIFT. DESIGN: A prospective clinical study. SETTING: A cardiac surgery operating room in a single cardiovascular center. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-five patients undergoing elective CRT lead implantation. INTERVENTIONS: CIFT and CI2D were determined simultaneously before and after CRT using CI3D as the reference method. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: BNP was measured before CRT and 6 months after CRT. Areas under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUCs) were calculated for each method of measurement to predict BNP decrease. AUC was largest for CI3D (AUC = 0.735, p = 0.017). Bland-Altman analysis revealed that the percentage error was 58% for CIFT and 28% for CI2D. A polar plot analysis showed that the mean angular bias was -7.26° and 0.64°, the radial limits of agreement were 70° and 29.4°, and the concordance rate was 67.7% and 93.8% for CIFT and CI2D, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: CI significantly increased after CRT in patients whose BNP level decreased 6 months after CRT. However, only CI3D could predict decreases in BNP 6 months after CRT. Although CI2D was acceptable compared with CI3D, the tracking ability of CI changes was just below acceptable. CIFT has a wide limit of agreement with CI3D, with a poor tracking ability.

RESUMO

The patient was a 67-year-old woman with a history of worsening dyspnea over several months. Cardiac echocardiography showed a large, mobile left atrial myxoma. Emergency surgery was performed. Cardiac arrest occurred during repositioning of the heart to cannulate the inferior vena cava and transesophageal echocardiography revealed the large myxoma obstructing the left ventricle. Cardiopulmonary bypass was initiated and spontaneous heartbeat returned shortly afterward. Changing myxoma position and sudden mitral orifice obstruction must be considered in these cases and once the diagnosis is made, patients should be operated on as early as possible.
