O objetivo deste trabalho foi mapear e descrever a ocorrência de roedores e seus ectoparasitas nas regiões norte do departamento de La Paz, Bolívia. De abril a maio e julho a agosto de 2017, 80 indivíduos da espécie Oligoryzomys microtis foram capturados em armadilhas vivas. Uma amostra aleatória de 36 indivíduos foi analisada quanto à presença de ectoparasitas, encontrando um total de 458 ectoparasitas. Os roedores foram capturados em dois tipos de ambientes: floresta secundária e áreas cultivadas, sendo a área cultivada a área com maior captação de roedores. Dos ectoparasitas, Laelaps sp. foi o gênero com maior abundância e Mysolaelaps sp. o mais prevalente; o gênero Polygenis sp. é aparentemente descrito pela primeira vez na selva amazônica, exigindo estudos adicionais para entender melhor os patógenos que são transmitidos no parasitismo desta pulga em roedores devido à sua importância no ecossistema e para a saúde pública.(AU)


The objective of this work was to map and describe the occurrence of rodents and their ectoparasites in regions to the North of the department of La Paz in Bolivia. From April to May and July to August 2017, 80 Oligoryzomys microtis rodents were captured and 36 random samples of their ectoparasites were analyzed, totaling 458 ectoparasites. Rodents were captured in two types of environments: secondary forest and crops areas, being the second one with greater amount of capture of rodents. Among the ectoparasites, Laelaps sp was the genus with the highest abundance and Mysolaelaps sp with the highest prevalence; the genus Polygenis sp is apparently described for the first time in the Amazon rainforest, requiring more studies to better understand the pathogens transmitted in the parasitism of this flea in rodents due to their importance in the ecosystem and public health.(AU)

The flea genus Neotyphloceras Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Ctenophthalmidae) includes five species and two subspecies distributed from Venezuela to southern Chile and Argentina. Only Neotyphloceras crassispina hemisus Jordan has been registered in Bolivia. The present study examines species of Neotyphloceras collected in Bolivian localities in the Departments of La Paz, Cochabamba and Tarija, and describes the morphology of the modified abdominal segments in males and females of Neotyphloceras rosenbergi Rothschild on the basis of type material and specimens collected from Tarija. A new species, Neotyphloceras boliviensis n. sp., is described and new host associations are reported for N. rosenbergi, Neotyphloceras crassispina crassispina and N. crassispina hemisus. Neotyphloceras c. crassispina and N. rosenbergi are reported for the first time in Bolivia. The distribution of N. rosenbergi is extended 1600 km to the south. Given the potential medical and veterinary significance of fleas as disease vectors, and considering that in the Departments of La Paz and Tarija several human cases of plague have been reported, and species of flea have been identified as main vectors of these diseases, the new records of fleas in Bolivia reported herein may be useful for epidemiological studies on flea-borne diseases.

Field mice of the genus Calomys are small, mostly granivorous rodents common to several habitats in South America. To date, phylogenies for the genus have been proposed on the basis of morphological, chromosomal, and biochemical data, often with contradictory results due to incomplete species sampling or methodological shortcomings. In this paper, we propose relationships among 10 species of Calomys based on the complete cytochrome b gene sequence. Our analyses show that Calomys is constituted by two major clades, one mostly associated with mountain habitats with subsequent invasions to lowland habitats and another with species restricted to lowland habitats both north and south of the Amazon basin. The evolution of the genus was likely accompanied by a reduction of chromosome diploid numbers that occurred independently in each of the two evolutionary lineages. A "clock" calibrated on the split between Auliscomys and Loxodontomys suggests that the almost nonexistent fossil record for the genus greatly underestimates divergence times among its species.
