RESUMO

Understanding gene expression kinetics and the underlying physiological mechanisms in stress combinations is a challenge for the purpose of stress resistance breeding. The novelty of this study is correlating the physiological mechanisms with the expression of key target genes in tall fescue under a combination of various salinity and osmotic stress treatments. Four drought- and salt-responsive genes belonging to different crucial pathways evaluated included one transcription factor FabZIP69, one for the cytosolic polyamine synthetase FaADC1, one for ABA signaling FaCYP707A1, and another one for the specific Na+/H+ plasma membrane antiporter FaSOS1 involve in osmotic homeostasis. FaSOS1, FaCYP707A1, and FabZIP69 were induced early at 6 h after NaCl treatment, while FaSOS1 and FaCYP707A1 were transcribed gradually after exposure to PEG. However, stress interactions showed a significantly increased expression in all genes. Expression of these genes was positively correlated to Pro, SSs, IL, DPPH, and antioxidant enzyme activity and negatively correlated with RWC, total Chl, and MSI. Chemical analyses showed that tall fescue plants exposed to the combination of stresses exhibited increased quantity of reactive oxygen species (H2O2), EL and DPPH, and higher levels of antioxidant enzyme activities (CAT, and SOD), Pro, and SSs content, compared with control seedlings. Under dual-stress conditions, the expression of FabZIP69 was effective in controlling the expression of FaSOS1 and FaADC1 genes differently.

RESUMO

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Iran has led to a lack of intensive care unit (ICU) facilities. This study examines C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and troponin in ICU patients with COVID-19 in comparison to COVID-19 patients admitted to the wards in Iran. Materials and Methods: In a case-control study, troponin, CRP, ESR, and D-dimer were compared in the case samples of 109 COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU, and in the control group, 140 COVID-19 patients admitted to the wards. Results: The mean of CRP (P < 0.001) and D-dimer (P < 0.001) was higher, whereas troponin (P < 0.001) was lower in patients admitted to the ICU, but no significant difference was observed between the values of ESR (P = 0.292) in the two groups. Conclusion: This study showed that the values of CRP and D-dimer were higher in patients admitted to the ICU, but no significant difference was observed between the values of ESR in the two groups.

RESUMO

Introduction: COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Thrombotic complications appear to be of particular importance in patients with COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate Changes in the level of Antiphospholipid antibodies (Anticardiolipin and Anti-ß2-glycoprotein-I) and thromboembolic indices in COVID-19 patients during 3 weeks. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on adults with Covid-19 hospitalized at Al-Zahra Hospital in Isfahan. The case group includes the patients admitted to the internal ward or ICU who despite receiving prophylactic or anticoagulant doses suffer from thrombotic complications and the control group includes COVID-19 patients without thromboembolic events. The sample size of 120 people was considered. Anticardiolipin and anti-ß2-glycoprotein-I antibodies, coagulation profiles including Fibrinogen, PTT, PT Troponin, ESR, CRP, and D-dimer were examined. After collection, the data were entered into spss24 software and analyzed. Results: The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the changes of anticardiolipin and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein in IgM and IgG as well as in the changes of ESR, CRP, PTT, PT, and fibrinogen in the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Our study showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between anti-phospholipid antibodies (anticardiolipin and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein) and thromboembolic events. Therefore anticardiolipin and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein is probably the puzzles causing thrombosis in COVID-19 patients, and other inflammatory responses should be examined among the cases.

RESUMO

Annual global temperature is increasing rapidly. Therefore, in the near future, plants will be exposed to severe heat stress. However, the potential of microRNAs-mediated molecular mechanism for modulating the expression of their target genes is unclear. To investigate the changes of miRNAs in thermo-tolerant plants, in this study, we first investigated the impact of four high temperature regimes including 35/30 °C, 40/35 °C, 45/40 °C, and 50/45 °C in a day/night cycle for 21 days on the physiological traits (total chlorophyll, relative water content and electrolyte leakage and total soluble protein), antioxidant enzymes activities (superoxide dismutase, ascorbic peroxidase, catalase and peroxidase), and osmolytes (total soluble carbohydrates and starch) in two bermudagrass accessions named Malayer and Gorgan. The results showed that more chlorophyll and the relative water content, lower ion leakage, more efficient protein and carbon metabolism and activation of defense proteins (such as antioxidant enzymes) in Gorgan accession, led to better maintained plant growth and activity during heat stress. In the next stage, to investigate the role of miRNAs and their target genes in response to heat stress in a thermo-tolerant plant, the impact of severe heat stress (45/40 °C) was evaluated on the expression of three miRNAs (miRNA159a, miRNA160a and miRNA164f) and their target genes (GAMYB, ARF17 and NAC1, respectively). All measurements were performed in leaves and roots simultaneously. Heat stress significantly induced the expression of three miRNAs in leaves of two accession, while having different effects on the expression of these miRNAs in roots. The results showed that a decrease in the expression of the transcription factor ARF17, no change in the expression of the transcription factor NAC1, and an increase in the expression of the transcription factor GAMYB in leaf and root tissues of Gorgan accession led to improved heat tolerance in it. These results also showed that the effect of miRNAs on the modulating expression of target mRNAs in leaves and roots is different under heat stress, and miRNAs and mRNAs show spatiotemporal expression. Therefore, the simultaneous analysis of miRNAs and mRNAs expressions in shoot and roots is needed to comprehensively understand miRNAs regulatory function under heat stress.

RESUMO

Poa pratensis L. is a perennial turfgrass with high regeneration and fertility, resistance to cold and drought, and quick colonization. By facultative apomixis, this plant can create a wide range of ploidy levels (2n = 22 to 2n = 154), resulting in a wide range of chromosomal numbers and sexual and apomictic reproductive diversity. The plant materials included fifty accessions from Iran's Center, South, North, North-East, North-West, and West ecoregions. UPOV standards were used to measure the qualities that were researched. The squash technique of chromosome counting revealed that Iranian Kentucky bluegrass accessions had chromosomal counts ranging from 24 to 87. The relative sizes of the 2C genomes were measured using laser flow cytometry. The range of DNA content was fairly wide, ranging from 4.92 to 11.52 pg. DNA content has a strong positive correlation with elevation, a moderately positive correlation with flag leaf length and leaf sheath width, and a negative correlation with inflorescence anthocyanin color and leaf anthocyanin color. The genotypes and ecological zones of this plant in Iran were distinguished based on morphological diversity and DNA content. The results from this study could be useful in identifying and studying wild Kentucky bluegrass genotypes. It aids in predicting the location of rare genotypes used as breeding materials. It can also increase the plant's variability for future generations by introducing new ecotypes, with particular genomic and morphological traits, to previously cultivated populations. We expect that the findings of this study will aid in understanding the evolution of this plant in the context of Iran's climatic variety.

RESUMO

The present study aims to validate the diagnostic performance and evaluate the reliability of an artificial intelligence system based on the convolutional neural network method for the morphological classification of sella turcica in CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) images. In this retrospective study, sella segmentation and classification models (CranioCatch, Eskisehir, Türkiye) were applied to sagittal slices of CBCT images, using PyTorch supported by U-Net and TensorFlow 1, and we implemented the GoogleNet Inception V3 algorithm. The AI models achieved successful results for sella turcica segmentation of CBCT images based on the deep learning models. The sensitivity, precision, and F-measure values were 1.0, 1.0, and 1.0, respectively, for segmentation of sella turcica in sagittal slices of CBCT images. The sensitivity, precision, accuracy, and F1-score were 1.0, 0.95, 0.98, and 0.84, respectively, for sella-turcica-flattened classification; 0.95, 0.83, 0.92, and 0.88, respectively, for sella-turcica-oval classification; 0.75, 0.94, 0.90, and 0.83, respectively, for sella-turcica-round classification. It is predicted that detecting anatomical landmarks with orthodontic importance, such as the sella point, with artificial intelligence algorithms will save time for orthodontists and facilitate diagnosis.

RESUMO

Poa pratensis L. is a commonly used cool-season turfgrass and endemic to Iran. This research was carried out to examine the genetic diversity of this plant within and between ecoregions of Iran and the impact of climatic variables and elevation on the distribution of its genotypes, as well as habitat suitability modeling. We used fifty accessions collected from six ecoregions (West, South, North, North-West and North-East) for genetic diversity assessment using 20 ISSR marker primers. The prospective ecoregions for Kentucky bluegrass production were projected using habitat suitability modeling, which took into account important environmental parameters, such as annual mean temperature, annual mean rainfall, and elevation. According to the UPMGA dendrogram, the accessions were divided into two major types and four subclasses. The genetic distance between the North and North-east accessions, as well as the Center accessions, was greater than that of the other genotypes. Center accessions had the greatest levels of polymorphism, effective number of alleles, Shannon index, and Nei's genetic diversity. The FR method was used to create the habitat suitability map based on environmental factors. Rainfall had the largest influence on the genotype distribution of P. pratensis L. The findings of this study can be used as raw materials in future breeding programs to improve and generate new cultivars with superior characteristics. It can also assist programs in identifying rare cultivars as well as preserving and developing native P. pratensis L. genotypes.

RESUMO

Background: The role of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPLs) in the prognosis of COVID-19 patients is controversial. In order to prove the role of this factor, the necessary measures such as early initiation of anticoagulants should be started even in the early stages of the disease and in outpatients or the use of other drugs in addition to anticoagulants. We decided to investigate the role of these antibodies in ICU admission outcomes in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Methods: The case-control study was carried out in Isfahan, Iran, from March to September 2021. One hundred nine patients in the case group were selected, including patients admitted to the ICU with a COVID-19 diagnosis. The 140 patients in the control group were selected from hospitalized and outpatients with COVID-19 with PCR + and pulmonary involvement, similar to the case group without the need for ICU hospitalization. The anti B2GP1 (IgM, IgG) and anti-cardiolipin (IgM, IgG)) were compared in two groups. Results: The frequency percentage of patients in the abnormal group of anti-phospholipid antibodies was about 10% in total. No statistically significant difference in these aPLs in continued measures was observed between the two groups of patients admitted to the ICU and those outside the ICU. Also, in the logistics regression analysis, no significant association was observed. Conclusions: Therefore, the cause of coagulation in patients admitted to the ICU is not related to these aPLs. This means that aPLs could not be a good predictor of patient admission to the ICU.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: 3D Digitization of dental model is growing in popularity for dental application. Classification of tooth type from single 3D point cloud model without assist of relative position among teeth is still a challenging task. METHODS: In this paper, 8-class posterior tooth type classification (first premolar, second premolar, first molar, second molar in maxilla and mandible respectively) was investigated by convolutional neural network (CNN)-based occlusal surface morphology analysis. 3D occlusal surface was transformed to depth image for basic CNN-based classification. Considering the logical hierarchy of tooth categories, a hierarchical classification structure was proposed to decompose 8-class classification task into two-stage cascaded classification subtasks. Image augmentations including traditional geometrical transformation and deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGANs) were applied for each subnetworks and cascaded network. RESULTS: Results indicate that combing traditional and DCGAN-based augmented images to train CNN models can improve classification performance. In the paper, we achieve overall accuracy 91.35%, macro precision 91.49%, macro-recall 91.29%, and macro-F1 0.9139 for the 8-class posterior tooth type classification, which outperform other deep learning models. Meanwhile, Grad-cam results demonstrate that CNN model trained by our augmented images will focus on smaller important region for better generality. And anatomic landmarks of cusp, fossa, and groove work as important regions for cascaded classification model. CONCLUSION: The reported work has proved that using basic CNN to construct two-stage hierarchical structure can achieve the best classification performance of posterior tooth type in 3D model without assistance of relative position information. The proposed method has advantages of easy training, great ability to learn discriminative features from small image region.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare dental and skeletal indices in panoramic radiography between patients undergoing haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and age- and sex-matched control group. METHODS: In this comparative cross-sectional study, quantitative Indices including Antegonial Index (AI), Mental Index (MI), Panoramic Mandibular Index (PMI) and qualitative indices including Mandibular Cortical Index (MCI) and Trabecular Pattern (TP) were evaluated in panoramic images of 32 haemodialysis patients, 14 patients under peritoneal dialysis and 52 healthy individuals. The images were also investigated for pulp canal calcification, pulp stones, soft tissue calcification, changes in or loss of lamina dura, radiolucencies associated with brown tumour and ridge resorption. The indices were compared between the three groups and were investigated for association with the patients' blood test parameters and their diseases causing chronic renal failure (CRF). Intraobserver agreement for the 2-week interval of assessment was calculated for the indices. RESULTS: MI (p = 0.574) and PMI (p = 0.100) were not significantly different, but AI (p = 0.01), MCI (p < 0.001) and TP (p = 0.002) were significantly different between the two case groups and the control group. The prevalence of pulp calcification (p = 0.03) and ridge resorption (p = 0.005) was higher in the haemodialysis group. Soft tissue calcification (p = 0.85) and lamina dura changes (p = 0.9) showed no significant difference. Brown tumours were observed in only one case in the haemodialysis group. CONCLUSIONS: AI, MCI and TP showed a reduction in mineral density of the cortical and trabecular bone in CRF patients and more severely in patients under haemodialysis than those under peritoneal dialysis.

RESUMO

An investigation was conducted to assess proline anabolism and catabolism pathway genes under drought stress. Treatments were irrigation in three levels (25, 50 and 100% field capacity) at 1, 3, 6 and 12 d and two rose species (Rosa canina L. and Rosa damascene Mill.). The results showed that the potential for proline accumulation in R. damascena was higher than R. canina under drought. Simultaneous with proline accumulation, expression of P5CS and P5CR genes increased from 1 to 12 d under 50% FC whereas their expression had an increasing trends from 1 to 6 d at 25% FC and expression of both genes decreased at 12 d in both species. The highest accumulation of proline was observed under 25% FC at 12 d, but expression of genes involved in proline synthesis main pathway decreased on this day. Furthermore, expression of genes (PDH and P5CDH) involved in proline catabolism pathway decreased in 50% FC from 1 to 12 d while their expression remarkably decreased from 1 to 6 d and increased at 12 d under 25% FC. These findings showed that under conditions of 50 and 25% FC, arginine accumulation resulted in the increased expression of the ARG gene, which led to ornithine production. Furthermore, ornithine accumulation increased OAT expression. Therefore, it seems that OAT-induced P5C is transported from the mitochondria to the cytosol and reduced to proline by the P5CR.

RESUMO

To assess the role of genes involved in polyamines synthesis, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), copper amine oxidase activity (CuAO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in regulation of stomatal aperture to drought stress in Rosa canina L., a study was performed at three irrigating levels (25%, 50%, and 100% field capacity) with three replications at 1, 3, 6 and 12 days. The results showed that putrescine (Put) accumulation occurred under both 50% and 25% FC at 1 d. Furthermore, the role of the Put direct biosynthesis pathway ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) was more effective under 50% FC whereas in the 25% FC the Put indirect production pathway (agmatine iminohydrolase (AIH), N-carbamoyl putrescine amidohydrolase (CPA) and arginine decarboxylase (ADC)) was more effective. HPLC results showed that the accumulation of spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) is consistent with the expression of S-adenosyl methionine decarboxylase (SAMDC), spermidine synthase (SPDS) and spermine synthase (SPMS) genes. Spd accumulation under both 50% and 25% FC occurred on the 3 d and then decreased in the other days. Spm content showed an increasing trend from 6 d under 50% FC and from 3 d under 25% FC. Our results suggest that among the measured polyamines, Put oxidation through CuAO activity increased resulted in an increase in H2O2 production. The H2O2 accumulation also as a secondary messenger led to enhance in NOS gene expression. Increase in NOS gene expression can act as a signal resulting in stomatal closure.

RESUMO

The accumulation of dental plaque on a tooth surface plays a crucial role in developing dental caries. In this paper, fluorescence imaging modality with structured light-based intraoral 3D scanner were combined to investigate the 3D distribution of dental plaque. The traditional fluorescence imaging method only reveals the 2D spatial distribution of the dental plaque on a tooth surface. To visualize the 3D distribution of the dental plaque on an occlusal surface, mapping a 2D fluorescence image to a 3D occlusal surface was investigated. An iterative closest point (ICP)-based contour registration method was proposed. A fluorescence camera was calibrated to obtain intrinsic parameters. The rotation and translation matrices for projecting the 3D occlusal surface were optimized to match the contours of the 2D fluorescence image and the 3D projected model. The 3D distribution of occlusal plaque reveals that dental plaque accumulation relates to the local and global morphology of the tooth surface. Thus, the depth of the pit-and-fissure is not the only parameter used to determine plaque content. The investigation of the 3D distribution of occlusal plaque using 2D-3D registration paves the path for the quantitative analysis of the tooth surface morphology to perform plaque-guided caries risk assessment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Conventional hepatitis B virus vaccination fails to achieve efficient protection in about 5%-10% of the world population. Different factors influence the immunogenicity of hepatitis B vaccine. This study aimed to evaluate these factors in health-care workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive study which was implemented among 140 of medical and dental staff working as health-care workers who were low responder after vaccination entered the study. RESULTS: Age (>40 years), weight (body mass index >25), immunodeficiency diseases, (primary immune deficiency and immunosuppressant drugs), diabetes mellitus, and smoking were the important factors. CONCLUSION: In the high-risk group of hepatitis B disease, the risk factors of immunogenicity must be evaluated at vaccination and check titers of antibody after vaccination.

RESUMO

In order to evaluate the genes involved in polyamines synthesis pathway and the role of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and H2O2 in stomatal closure under drought stress, a research conducted with three irrigation levels (100, 50 and 25% field capacity) at 1, 3, 6 and 12 days on Rosa damascena Mill. HPLC and qPCR results showed that putrescine (Put) accumulation occurred at first day in both 50 and 25% of field capacity and then decreased the other days. Furthermore, Put accumulation in the indirect pathway (ADC, AIH and CPA) was more effective related to the direct pathway (ODC) under severe stress. Increased expression of genes involved in production of spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) i.e., SAMDC, SPDS and SPMS correlated with the highest accumulation of Spd and Spm under 50% FC at 6 d and 25% FC at 12 d, respectively. Moreover, results showed that Put reduction simultaneously accumulated H2O2, which subsequently increased NOS expression suggesting a key signal for stomatal closure.

RESUMO

Tall fescue plants are widely exposed to white grubs. Regarding the rate of damage caused by the white grubs to tall fescue and difficulty of its ecological and economical control, production of resistant cultivars is a priority. In this experiment, for the first time, we report production of transgenic lines resistant to white grub using CR8DB gene. For this, mature seeds were placed on MS basal medium with 0-15 mg L-1 2,4-D for callogenesis and 0-1.75 mg L-1 BA for regeneration. 'Asterix' (54.11%) in 7.5 and 'Talladega' (52.53%) in 10 mg L-1 2,4-D showed maximum callogenesis. Regeneration percentage was higher in 0.5 mg L-1 BA. Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 harbouring binary vector pCAMBIA 1301 with CRY8DB gene, which contains HPTII gene and uidA and various types MS media were used for transformation of calli. The highest percentage of gus enzyme activity and hygromycin resistance in calli was related to the modified medium type 11. The PCR and RT-PCR analysis was done to confirm the presence and expression of the target gene in transgenic 5 lines in 'Asterix' and 3 lines in 'Talladega'. According to bioassay, larvae mortality of 91.66% was observed in transgenic plants, whereas it was 15.52% in control plants.

RESUMO

Narcissus spp. are an economically important crop for medicines in relation with the alkaloids production, mainly galanthamine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In this article an extensively study of the phytochemistry of both bulbs of different species and varieties of Narcissus grown in Iran and in vitro culture of these plants was investigated. In particular, the Amaryllidaceae alkaloid profile and the galanthamine and lycorine contents in wild bulbs of Narcissus papyraceus (G5) and four varieties of Narcissus tazetta (N. tazetta var. Shahla (G4), N. tazetta var. Shastpar (G1), N. tazetta var. Meskin (G2), N. tazetta var. Panjehgorbei (G3)), growing in Iran are reported. The alkaloid profiles were investigated by GC-MS and LC-MS and the quantitative analysis was performed using GC-MS. In total, thirty alkaloids were identified among them nine alkaloids were observed with the both methods of analysis. The variety Meskin of N. tazetta (G2), showed the highest diversity of alkaloids and the highest content in galanthamine. On this last species (G2) and on N. tazetta var. Shahla (G4), the effects of auxins 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (Picloram) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) at concentrations of 25 and 50 µM were studied on the induction of callus and its capacity to induce organogenesis and alkaloid diversity. All auxins, at the concentrations of 25 and 50 µM, produced calli. Bulblets and roots were formed on calli grown only in the presence of 25 or 50 µM NAA. GC-MS analyses showed the presence of galanthamine and lycorine in calli, roots and bulblets, with all auxins whatever the concentration used while demethylmaritidine and tazettine were found in differentiated tissue cultures cultivated on the medium containing NAA (25 or 50 µM) or in calli initiated with Picloram (50 µM). Precursor 4'-O-methylnorbelladine (MN) of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids feeding was found to significantly improve the accumulation of both galanthamine (82 µg/g DW) and lycorine (1800 µg/g DW) in bulblets of N. tazetta var. Meskin (G2).

RESUMO

Muscular hydatid cyst is a rare condition mainly secondary to the cysts from other organs. We hereby present an uncommon case of primary hydatid cyst found in the right biceps brachii muscle of a 36-year-old male. Magnetic resonance revealed no Echinococcus involvement in any other part of his body. Chest X-ray was normal, and no trace of cyst was found in the lung. In areas where echinococcosis is endemic, any tumor or mass in any part of the patient's body should be evaluated and examined for Echinococcus infestation. RESUMO

The successful introduction of isopentenyl transferase (IPT) gene into perennial ryegrass, cultivars Numan and Grassland using Agrobacterium tumefaciens via three explants (callus, seed and meristem tip) under three individual experiment was evaluated. In the first experiment, the calli were inoculated with LBA4404 Agrobacterium strain under vacuum, heat and in combination of both at 42 °C for 5 min followed by vacuum treatment (390 mm Hg pressure) for 15 min. Sonication-assisted Agrobacterium-mediated transformation (SAAT) was applied for seed and meristem tip transformation of perennial ryegrass for the first time. Results showed positive effects of heat treatment on transformation efficiency during Agro-infection in both cultivars. However, heat shock treatment was more effective in 'Grassland' than 'Numan' (14.2% vs 9.2%). In addition, high transformation efficiency of about 46.65% and 29.15% was observed using meristem tip explants of 'Grassland' and 'Numan' based on IPT and RD29A positive PCR results, respectively. Seed transformation efficiency in 'Grassland' and 'Numan' under SAAT method reached to 37.5% and 16.65%, respectively. Results of these experiments revealed that LBA4404 strain was more efficient than GV3101 in transformation of both perennial ryegrass cultivars. The DNA-blot analysis confirmed that a single T-DNA copy of the IPT gene was integrated into the genomic DNA of the positive transgenic T0 plants which obtained from callus and meristem tip explants of 'Grassland' after heat and SAAT treatment, respectively. Because monocots are not the host of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, this novel protocol can be used in further experiments on genetic transformation of perennial ryegrass cultivars.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mastitis is an inflammatory disorder in breast tissues due to bacterial factors, mycobacterial infections or autoimmune diseases. Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a form of mastitis which may be affected by systematic diseases such as sarcoidosis, and infectious causes such as mycobacterium and fungus. This study evaluates the efficacy of medical therapy with a combination of corticosteroid and Azithromycin in patients with IGM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a clinical trial research carried out in Alzahra Hospital (Isfahan, Iran) in 2013 on granulomatous mastitis patients. It was administered 250 mg of Azithromycin per 12 hour and 60 mg of Prednisolone per day within 2 weeks. Next, they took 40 mg/day within 8 weeks, and this dosage was tapered during 6 months and the patients clinically and radiologically followed up. The studied patients were examined within 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months, from the beginning of treatment. RESULTS: This study investigated granulomatous mastitis patients in Alzahra hospital in 2013. The mean age of these patients was 33.6 ± 8.9, and their age range was 18-56 years old. Among 26 studied patients, 24 persons (92.3%) according to follow-up the patients by physical examination and sonography responded to treatment of corticosteroid and Azithromycin. The remaining (7.7%) underwent surgery. Treatment periods in case of drug use were respectively, 8.5 ± 0.71 months. CONCLUSION: Treatment with corticosteroid and Azithromycin is an effective and appropriate treatment for IGM.
