RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Foot massage is known to be effective on the emotional state (anxiety, depression, etc.) in the postoperative period. However, studies on its effect on functional level are insufficient. AIM: The study aimed to investigate the impact of foot plantar massage on functional recovery in older adults undergoing general surgery, employing a randomized clinical trial design. METHODS: A total of 70 older adults aged 65 years and above who underwent abdominal surgery were included. Various assessments were conducted, including pain levels (Visual Analogue Scale), fear of mobility (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia), functional independence (Functional Independence Measure), balance (Berg Balance Scale), basic mobility (Rivermead Mobility Index), mental function status (Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination), and delirium (Nu-DESC). RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were observed in some assessment parameters within the groups during the 2nd and 3rd measurement times, with the intervention group demonstrating significant mean differences. DISCUSSIONS: The literature underscores the increase in kinesiophobia scores post-general/abdominal surgery in older adults, emphasizing the importance of evaluating functional level and kinesiophobia to expedite discharge processes and potentially plan early post-discharge rehabilitation to mitigate readmissions for functional reasons. CONCLUSIONS: Ultimately, foot massage was found to be effective in reducing kinesiophobia, improving balance, mobility, daily living skills, and mental status in older adults post-abdominal surgery, thereby advocating for the facilitation of post-discharge rehabilitation programs or the reduction of readmission rates. THE CLINICAL TRIALS NUMBER: NCT05534490.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Further data on the causes of functional independence or disability after surgery are needed to explain the clinical decision-making process for older patients, their families, and policy-makers. There are a limited number of studies showing the relationship between kinesiophobia, functional status, pain and mobility in older adults after surgery. AIMS: The study aims to investigate relationships among kinesiophobia, pain, mobility, and functional status in older adults after surgery. METHODS: A comparative-descriptive and cross-sectional study. The research was conducted with 99 older adults in the general surgery clinic after surgery. A Visual Analogue Scale was used to evaluate pain levels, the Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination to evaluate mental function status, the Functional Independence Measure to assess functional independence in daily activities, the Rivermead Mobility Index to evaluate basic mobility in daily life, and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia to assess fear of mobility. RESULTS: Regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between social security and kinesiophobia, and also between functional level and type of anesthesia and mental status in older women (R2 = - 0.185, p = 0.005; R2 = - 0.167, p = 0.011 and p = 0.005, respectively). DISCUSSION: In the literature, there are no standardized procedures during the evaluation and rehabilitation of older adults after abdominal or thoracic surgery, etc. operations. This study will contribute to the current literature by attracting interest in this field and increasing the evaluations performed. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings emphasize the importance of evaluating the functional, mobility, mental and kinesiophobic status of older adults after surgery in clinics, rehabilitation centers, or research.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Pilates exercise program on health-related quality of life, pain, functional level, and depression status in university students. DESIGN AND METHODS: The exercise programs were carried out for 12 weeks. The scales of Nottingham Health Profile, Visual Analog Scale, Oswestry Disability Index, and Beck Depression Inventory were used at the baseline and after training. FINDINGS: Exercise should be encouraged to reduce pain and depression and improve the quality of life in healthy university students. Both Pilates and therapeutic exercises approach can be preferred. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The results of this study show the inability to identify clear different effects from therapeutic exercises on university students for Pilates exercises.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the dependency levels of older adults living in nursing homes and home environments in their daily life activities, and the relationship involving pain, sleep, depression, and mental status affecting these levels. METHODS: The comparative-descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in Cinarcik district of Yalova province, Turkey, from February to May 2016, and comprised older adults living in a nursing home and those in home environments. Data was collected using face-to-face interviews, a questionnaire, Barthel Index, Visual Analogue Scale, Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 185 subjects, 100(54%) were living in nursing homes and 85(46%) in home environments. Overall, there were 101(54.6%) women and 84(45.4%) men, and 97(52.4%) were aged >75 years. There was a significant positive relationship between Barthel Index and Standardised Mini Mental State Examination scores (p<0.05) and a significant negative relationship between Barthel Index and Geriatric Depression Scale scores among those living in nursing homes. Among those living in home environments, there was a statistically significant negative relationship involving Barthel Index, Visual Analogue Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and the Geriatric Depression Scale scores (p<0.05). Also there was a significant positive relationship between Barthel Index and Standardised Mini- Mental State Examination scores (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The dependency levels in daily life activities were found to be associated with mental status and depression in older adults living in nursing homes, while it was associated with pain, mental status, sleep and depression in those living in home environments.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The foot and ankle are important factors that provide balance and functional performance in older adults at risk of falling. It is important that proper posture of the foot via techniques such as taping and orthoses to increase contact with the ground. The purpose of this study was to investigate for a two-week period and prolonged effects (fourteen days) of Kinesio tape on the level of functional performance, balance, muscle strength of the lower extremities, pain, and functional independence when Kinesio tape was applied to the foot and ankle of older adults. METHODS: Randomized trial. Forty-two older adults aged 65 years or more were selected randomly into one of two groups (KT: N.=22, control: N.=20). KT was used on the ankle and food of older adults for a two-week period. Participants were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale, Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Mini-Mental State Examination, 30-Second Sit to Stand test and Functional Independent Measurement instrument. RESULTS: A significant difference was found between baseline and following application in the TUG and the BBS scores (P=0.001 and P<0.0001, respectively) in the Kinesio tape group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that KT improves balance and functional performance and reduces the risk of falling among older adults.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare classification levels and trunk stabilization of wheelchair basketball players and to identify their norm values of trunk balance. PARTICIPANTS: 113 wheelchair basketball players in the super and first Turkish leagues. INTERVENTIONS: A modified Wheelchair Skills Test (WST) (version 4.1) was used to evaluate trunk stabilization. Two skills were chosen that correspond to the stationary wheelie activity in WST, the 30-s stationary wheelie and stationary wheelie in 180°. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: There are no statistical differences between WST rates and point means. RESULTS: The skills and success and safety rates of the players with 1.5 points (51.9%, 44.4%) were lower than those of the players with 1.0 point (70%, 66.7%). In players with 2.5 and 2.0 points, the most successful and safest percentage values were 78.6%, 78.6% and 82.1%, 75%. CONCLUSIONS: Although it is expected that trunk stabilization would be better in players with high points, in our study we encountered conflicting results between the points and sitting balance or trunk stabilization. Our study supports the studies in the literature suggesting modifications in the functional-classification system.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of wheelchair basketball sport on the functional abilities of wheelchair users. METHOD: This is a randomized controlled study. Wheelchair basketball players (n = 111) and non-player (n = 85) were included in this study. We administered the questionnaire version of the wheelchair skills test questionnaire (WST_Q), recording the participants' capacity and performance scores on each of 32 skills. RESULTS: Player group have the baseline values of WST_Q higher than control group. The mean total percentage score of player group was significantly greater than control group (p < 0.05). The get over 15 cm level (respectively, rations of capacity and performance of groups: player/control: 50.5-20% and 54.1-24.7%) and the ascends 10° incline (player/control 96.4-48.2% and 98.2-54.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Participation in regular wheelchair basketball sport may preserve and augment functional abilities in with wheelchair user Implications for rehabilitation The skills-sports relationship is reciprocal. With increased wheelchair skills, people may be more inclined to engage in sports; subsequently, with greater sports, wheelchair skills could improve. Wheelchair mobility skills during clinical rehabilitation should reflect the daily activities and needs of each wheelchair user. WST-Q provides advantages in terms of requiring less time and material in using of clinical.
