RESUMO

This study aimed to verify the effects of 4 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), heavy (HRT) and explosive (ERT) resistance training on aerobic, anaerobic and neuromuscular parameters and performance of well-trained runners. Twenty-six male athletes were divided into HIIT (n = 10), HRT (n = 7) and ERT (n = 9) groups. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the corresponding velocity (vVO2max), anaerobic threshold (AT), running economy (RE), oxygen uptake kinetics, lower-body strength (1RM) and power (CMJ), and the 1500m and 5000m time-trial (TT) were determined. Improvements were observed in vVO2max (mean difference (Δ): 2.6%; effect size (ES): 0.63) with HIIT, while AT was incresead in ERT (Δ: 4.3%; ES: 0.73) and HRT (Δ: 6.9%; ES: 0.72) groups. The CMJ performance was increased in ERT (Δ: 13.8%; ES: 1.03), HRT (Δ: 6.9%; ES: 0.55) and HIIT (Δ: 5.4%; ES: 0.34), whereas 1RM increase in HRT (Δ: 38.1%; ES: 1.21) and ERT (Δ: 49.2%; ES: 0.96) groups. HIIT improved the 1500m (Δ: -2.3%; ES: -0.62) and both HRT (Δ: -1.6%; ES: -0.32) and ERT (Δ: -1.7%; ES: -0.31) the 5000m TT. Despite performance adaptations were dependent on the training characteristics, both RT and HIIT model constitute an alternative for training periodization.

RESUMO

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What are the physiological mechanisms underlying muscle fatigue and the increase in the O2 cost per unit of work during high-intensity exercise? What is the main finding and its importance? Muscle fatigue happens before, and does not explain, the V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ slow component ( V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ ), but they share the same origin. Muscle activation heterogeneity is associated with muscle fatigue and V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ . Knowing this may improve training prescriptions for healthy people leading to improved public health outcomes. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to explain the V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ slow component ( V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ ) and muscle fatigue during cycling at different intensities. The muscle fatigue of 16 participants was determined through maximal isokinetic effort lasting 3 s during constant work rate bouts of moderate (MOD), heavy (HVY) and very heavy intensity (VHI) exercise. Breath-by-breath V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ , near-infrared spectroscopy signals and EMG activity were analysed (thigh muscles). V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ was higher during VHI exercise (∼70% vs. ∼28% of V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ reserve in HVY). The deoxygenated haemoglobin final value during VHI exercise was higher than during HVY and MOD exercise (∼90% of HHb physiological normalization, vs. ∼82% HVY and ∼45% MOD). The muscle fatigue was greater after VHI exercise (∼22% vs. HVY ∼5%). There was no muscle fatigue after MOD exercise. The greatest magnitude of muscle fatigue occurred within 2 min (VHI ∼17%; HVY ∼9%), after which it stabilized. No significant relationship between V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ and muscle force production was observed. The τ of muscle V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ was significantly related (R2  = 0.47) with torque decrease for VHI. Type I and II muscle fibre recruitment mainly in the rectus femoris moderately explained the muscle fatigue (R2  = 0.30 and 0.31, respectively) and the V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ (R2  = 0.39 and 0.27, respectively). The V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ is also partially explained by blood lactate accumulation (R2  = 0.42). In conclusion muscle fatigue and O2 cost seem to share the same physiological cause linked with a decrease in the muscle V ̇ O 2 ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}}$ and a change in lactate accumulation. Muscle fatigue and V ̇ O 2 sc ${\dot{V}}_{{{\rm{O}}}_{\rm{2}}{\rm{sc}}}$ are associated with muscle activation heterogeneity and metabolism of different muscles activated during cycling.

RESUMO

This study aimed to examine the differences in physical match activities and heart rate (HR) responses experienced by Brazilian field referees (FRs) and assistant referees (ARs) during official matches from Serie A, Serie B and Regional championships. The sample was composed of 51 FRs and 87 ARs. Match activities derived from Global Position System and HR response were collected during official matches. FRs and ARs covered higher distances at high-intensity running (HIR; d = 1.17 and 2.53, p < 0.001), sprinting (d = 0.82 and 0.48, p < 0.005) and high-intensity activities (HIA; d = 1.07 and 1.97, p < 0.001) in Serie A and Serie B than in Regional. Changes in the distances covered at HIR (0.80 < d < 3.25, p < 0.005), sprinting (d = 0.42, p = 0.050) and HIA (0.93 < d < 3.01, p < 0.005) between half-matches were observed during Serie A and Serie B. The average %HRmax was progressively increased in both half-matches (0.85 < d < 3.54, p < 0.001) during all championships. For FRs, Serie A and Regional elicited the highest average %HRmax (0.80 3C d < 1.37, p < 0.030). For ARs, Serie A and Serie B elicited the highest average %HRmax (2.14 < d< 3.87, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the physical match activities and average %HRmax of Brazilian FRs and ARs differ across championship levels. FRs and ARs acting in Regional championships are likely to need specific preparation to support the higher physical demand observed at higher competition levels.

RESUMO

This study assessed the nitrogen nutrition index, morphogenic characteristics and tiller structure of Alexandergrass (Urochloaplantaginea (LINK) Hitch) pasture submitted to different nitrogen (N) levels (zero, 150 or 300 kg ha-1 of N). The experimental design was entirely randomized with repeated measures arrangement. The experimental animals were Angus heifers under rotational stocking grazing method. The number of animals was variable to keep 30±5 cm post-grazing sward height. Nitrogen nutrition index increased linearly according N levels (Y = 59.8 + 0.1216N; P < 0.0001; r²=0.53). The leaf appearance rate adjusted to a positive linear regression model according the thermal sum (TS) with zero of N (Y0N = 0.0077 + 0.0000087TS; P = 0.0308; r² = 0.72) and 150 kg ha-1 of N (Y150N = 0.0020 + 0.000021 TS; P = 0.0022; r² = 0.92). The use of 300 kg ha-1 of N did not alter the leaf appearance rate (0.0124 leaf degree-days-1). The use of up to 300 kg ha-1 of N increases the Alexandergrass nitrogen content. The leaf appearance rate in Alexandergrass is modified using N while the morphogenic characteristics leaf expansion, stem expansion, phyllochron, leaf lifespan, leaf elongation duration and tiller structure are not altered by N utilization.

The purpose of this study was to verify the heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) kinetics during the fundamental phase in different intensity domains of cycling exercise. Fourteen males performed five exercise sessions: (1) maximal incremental cycling test; (2) two rest-to-exercise transitions for each intensity domain, that is, heavy (Δ30) and severe (Δ60) domains. HRV markers (SD1 and SD2) and HR kinetics in the fundamental phase were analyzed by first-order exponential fitting. There were no significant differences in amplitude values between SD1Δ30 (8.98 ± 3.52 ms) and SD1Δ60 (9.44 ± 3.24 ms) and SD2Δ30 (24.93 ± 9.16 ms) and SD2Δ60 (25.98 ± 7.29 ms). Significant difference was observed between HRΔ30 (52 ± 7 bpm) and HRΔ60 (63 ± 8 bpm). The time constant (τ) values were significantly different between SD1Δ30 (17.61 ± 6.26 s) and SD1Δ60 (13.86 ± 5.90 s), but not between SD2Δ30 (20.06 ± 3.73 s) and SD2Δ60 (19.47 ± 6.03 s) or HRΔ30 (56.75 ± 18.22 s) and HRΔ60 (58.49 ± 15.61 s). However, the τ values for HRΔ30 were higher and significantly different in relation to SD1Δ30 and SD2Δ30, as well as for HRΔ60 in relation to SD1Δ60 and SD2Δ60. The kinetics of the autonomic variable (SD1 marker) was accelerated by the increased intensity. Moreover, significant differences were found for the τ values, with faster HRV markers than HR, in both intensities of Δ30 and Δ60, which suggests that these variables indicate distinct and specific cardiac autonomic response times during different intensity domains in cycling.HIGHLIGHTSThe application of HRV to optimize exercise prescription at different effort intensities is extremely important to obtain assertive and effective results.Analysis of the kinetic responses of HRV is a useful tool for the evaluation of exercise performance and health status.A faster kinetics was found for HRV markers in comparison to HR, for both intensities analysed, which suggests that these variables indicate distinct and specific cardiac autonomic response times during different intensity domains in cycling.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to compare maximal oxygen uptake of a step incremental test with time to exhaustion verification tests (TLIM) performed on the same or different day. Nineteen recreationally trained cyclists (age: 23 ± 2.7 years; maximal oxygen uptake: 48.0 ± 5.8 mL·kg-1·min-1) performed 3 maximal tests as follows: (i) same day: an incremental test with 3-min stages followed by a TLIM at 100% of peak power output of the incremental test (TLIM-SAME) interspaced by 15 min; and (ii) different day: a TLIM at 100% of peak power output of the incremental test (TLIM-DIFF). The maximal oxygen uptake was determined for the 3 tests. The maximal oxygen uptake was not different among the tests (incremental: 3.83 ± 0.41; TLIM-SAME: 3.72 ± 0.42; TLIM-DIFF: 3.75 ± 0.41 L·min-1; P = 0.951). Seven subjects presented a variability greater than ±3% in both verification tests compared with the incremental test. The same-day verification test decreased the exercise tolerance (240 ± 38 vs. 310 ± 36 s) compared with TLIM-DIFF (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the incremental protocol is capable of measuring maximal oxygen uptake because similar values were observed in comparison with verification tests. Although the need for the verification phase is questionable, the additional tests are useful to evaluate individual variability. Novelty Step incremental test is capable of measuring maximal oxygen uptake with similar values during TLIM on the same or different day. Although the necessity of the verification phase is questionable, it can allow the determination of variability in maximal oxygen uptake.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of the Dmax method on heart rate variability (HRV) to estimate the lactate thresholds (LT), during a maximal incremental running test (MIRT). METHODS: Nineteen male runners performed two MIRTs, with the initial speed at 8 km·h-1 and increments of 1 km·h-1 every 3 minutes, until exhaustion. Measures of HRV and blood lactate concentrations were obtained, and lactate (LT1 and LT2) and HRV (HRVTDMAX1 and HRVTDMAX2) thresholds were identified. ANOVA with Scheffe's post hoc test, effect sizes (d), the bias ± 95% limits of agreement (LoA), standard error of the estimate (SEE), Pearson's (r), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated to assess validity. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed between HRVTDMAX1 and LT1 when expressed for speed (12.1 ± 1.4 km·h-1 and 11.2 ± 2.1 km·h-1; p=0.55; d = 0.45; r = 0.46; bias ± LoA = 0.8 ± 3.7 km·h-1; SEE = 1.2 km·h-1 (95% CI, 0.9-1.9)). Significant differences were observed between HRVTDMAX2 and LT2 when expressed for speed (12.0 ± 1.2 km·h-1 and 14.1 ± 2.5 km·h-1; p=0.00; d = 1.21; r = 0.48; bias ± LoA = -1.0 ± 1.8 km·h-1; SEE = 1.1 km·h-1 (95% CI, 0.8-1.6)), respectively. Reproducibility values were found for the LT1 (ICC = 0.90; bias ± LoA = -0.7 ± 2.0 km·h-1), LT2 (ICC = 0.97; bias ± LoA = -0.1 ± 1.1 km·h-1), HRVTDMAX1 (ICC = 0.48; bias ± LoA = -0.2 ± 3.4 km·h-1), and HRVTDMAX2 (ICC = 0.30; bias ± LoA = 0.3 ± 3.5 km·h-1). CONCLUSIONS: The Dmax method applied over a HRV dataset allowed the identification of LT1 that is close to aerobic threshold, during a MIRT.

RESUMO

A link between muscle fatigue, decreased efficiency and the slow component of oxygen uptake (VO2sc) has been suggested. However, a cause-effect relationship remains to be elucidated. Although alterations in VO2 kinetics after elevated baseline work rate have previously been reported, to date no study has observed the effect on muscle force production (MFP) behavior considering physiological differences between male and female subjects. This study investigated the effect of elevated baseline work rate on the VO2 kinetics and MFP in 10 male and 10 female healthy subjects. Subjects performed 4 transitions of very-heavy (VH) intensity cycling in a randomized order after unloaded (U-VH) or moderate (M-VH) exercise. Maximal isokinetic efforts (MIE) were performed before and after each condition at two different cadences (60 or 120 rpm). Whereas baseline VO2 and time constant (τ) were significantly higher in M-VH compared to U-VH, the fundamental amplitude and the VO2 slow component (VO2sc) were significantly lower in M-VH (p < 0.05) in both sexes. Blood lactate concentration ([La]) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were not influenced by condition or sex (p > 0.05). The MFP post-exercise was not significantly influenced by condition in both sexes and cadences (Δtorque for males: at 60 rpm in U-VH = 13 ± 10 Nm, in M-VH = 13 ± 9 Nm; at 120 rpm in U-VH = 22 ± 14 Nm, in M-VH = 21 ± 12 Nm; for females: at 120 rpm in U-VH = 10 ± 9 Nm, in M-VH = 12 ± 8 Nm; p > 0.05), with the exception that female subjects presented smaller decreases in M-UH at 60 rpm compared to U-VH (11 ± 13 vs. 18 ± 14 Nm, respectively, p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the decrease in torque production and VO2 kinetics parameters (p > 0.05). The alterations in VO2 kinetics which have been suggested to be linked to changes in motor unit recruitment after elevated baseline work rate did not reflect alterations in MFP and fatigue in both sexes.

RESUMO

Background: We aimed to investigate the effect of a priming ischemia-reperfusion (IR) model on the kinetics of pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2) and cardiopulmonary parameters after high-intensity exercise. Our primary outcome was the overall VO2 kinetics and secondary outcomes were heart rate (HR) and O2 pulse kinetics. We hypothesized that the IR model would accelerate VO2 and cardiopulmonary kinetics during the exercise. Methods: 10 recreationally active men (25.7 ± 4.7 years; 79.3 ± 10.8 kg; 177 ± 5 cm; 44.5 ± 6.2 mL kg-1 min-1) performed a maximal incremental ramp test and four constant load sessions at the midpoint between ventilatory threshold and VO2 max on separate days: two without IR (CON) and two with IR (IR). The IR model consisted of a thigh bi-lateral occlusion for 15 min at a pressure of 250 mmHg, followed by 3 min off, before high-intensity exercise bouts. Results: There were no significant differences for any VO2 kinetics parameters (VO2 base 1.08 ± 0.08 vs. 1.12 ± 0.06 L min-1; P = 0.30; τ = 50.1 ± 7.0 vs. 47.9 ± 6.4 s; P = 0.47), as well as for HR (MRT180s 67.3 ± 6.0 vs. 71.3 ± 6.1 s; P = 0.54) and O2 pulse kinetics (MRT180s 40.9 ± 3.9 vs. 48.2 ± 5.6 s; P = 0.31) between IR and CON conditions, respectively. Conclusion: We concluded that the priming IR model used in this study had no influence on VO2, HR, and O2 pulse kinetics during high-intensity cycling exercise.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the leaf tissue flows in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), in different phenological stages, grazed by lambs, and managed under three herbage allowances (6, 9 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight under rotational stocking method. The experimental design was completely randomized, with repeated measures arrangement. Forage allowances determined similar growth and intake flows, actual and potential utilization efficiencies of grass and they were different in the phenological stages of Italian ryegrass. The intake of leaf blade, as a percentage of body weight, was higher in the 12% herbage allowance. Considering leaf tissue flows, Italian ryegrass can be managed in forage allowances that vary between 6 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight.

RESUMO

We hypothesized that prior exercise would attenuate the muscle fatigue accompanied by oxygen uptake slow-component (V̇O2SC) behavior during a subsequent very-heavy (VH)-intensity cycling exercise. Thirteen healthy male subjects performed tests to determine the critical power (CP) and the fixed amount of work above CP ([Formula: see text]) and performed 6 square-wave bouts until 3 or 8 min, each at a work rate set to deplete 70% [Formula: see text] in 8 min, with a maximal isokinetic effort before and after the conditions without (VHCON) and with prior exercise (VHEXP), to measure the cycling peak torque decrement. The V̇O2SC magnitude at 3 min (VHCON = 0.280 ± 0.234, VHEXP = 0.116 ± 0.109 L·min-1; p = 0.04) and the V̇O2SC trajectory were significantly lower for VHEXP (VHCON = 0.108 ± 0.042, VHEXP = 0.063 ± 0.031 L·min-2; p < 0.01), leading to a V̇O2SC magnitude at the eighth minute that was significantly lower than VHCON (VHCON = 0.626 ± 0.296 L·min-1, VHEXP = 0.337 ± 0.179; p < 0.01). Conversely, peak torque progressively decreased from pre-exercise to 3 min (Δtorque = 21.5 ± 7.7 vs. 19.6 ± 9.2 Nm) and to 8 min (Δtorque = 29.4 ± 15.8 vs. 27.5 ± 12.0 Nm) at VHCON and VHEXP, respectively, without significant differences between conditions. Regardless of the condition, there was a significant relationship between Δtorque and the V̇O2SC (R2: VHCON = 0.23, VHEXP = 0.25; p = 0.01). Considering that "priming" effects on the V̇O2SC were not accompanied by the muscle force behavior, these findings do not support the hypothesis of a "causal" relationship between the time-course of muscle fatigue and V̇O2SC.

RESUMO

The objective was to analyze the ingestive behavior, forage intake and pasture characteristics when beef heifers are kept exclusively on ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) or receiving ground corn grain as supplement (0.9% of body weight (BW )) with or without addition of crude glycerin (0.2% BW). Experimental animals were Angus heifers with initial age and body weight of eight months and 166.2 ± 9.5 kg, respectively. The grazing method was continuous with variable number of animals. The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures. Dry matter intake was estimated using chromium oxide as an indicator of fecal output. Heifers ingested a similar amount of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber. Forage intake was 19.0% lower when heifers receiving ground corn grain as supplement with or without addition of crude glycerin and these reduction in dry matter intake of forage provided increase of 38.2% in the stocking rate. Heifers that received crude glycerin as a supplement spent more time in the trough than heifers that received only ground corn grain.

To investigate the presence of a relative age effect (RAE) and the influence of birth quarters (BQ), semesters (S) as well as skeletal maturation on anthropometric characteristics and aerobic peak speed (PST-CAR) in youth male soccer players. Methods: One hundred players were recruited to participate in this study. Players were allocated into 4 BQ's and 2 S. Skeletal maturity status was assessed using the Fels method. Assessments for players included determination of body size and composition and PST-CAR. Results: Overall, more players were born in BQ1 (38 %) and S1 (75%). The likelihood of players born in BQ1 and BQ2 being selected was 3.61 to 4.96 times higher than players in BQ3 and BQ4. Players in BQ4 maturing earlier were biologically older than their peers in BQ1. The players in BQ3 and S2 displayed higher PST-CAR compared with players in BQ2 and S1, respectively. However, players of contrasting skeletal maturity status did not differ in aerobic performance. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that coaches and talent scouts are systematically retaining average and early maturing players born in S1 and excluding late maturing players born in BQ4. However, aerobic performance appeared to be dependent on the relative age, but independent of skeletal maturation during puberty.(AU)

RESUMO

To strategically define the best stocking rate management strategy for ryegrass, it is important to know the growth process of forage plants in detail. The study was conducted to analyze the leaf biomass flows and the defoliation intensity and frequency of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) grazed by heifers fed exclusively on pasture or on pasture and supplemented with corn or white oat grain. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measures arrangement with three feeding systems and three area replications. Biomass flows (kg DM leaf blades ha1 day1) for leaf growth (40.6), leaf senescence (40.7), and leaf intake (29.7) were similar in the different feeding systems. Leaf blade intake adjusted to body weight was lower in supplemented heifers regardless of grain type. Actual and potential utilization efficiencies and ryegrass biomass net balance were not affected by feeding system. The leaf intake flow was 1.4 times lower than the growth flow, resulting in an actual utilization efficiency less than one (0.7), whereas the senescence flow was higher than the growth flow, resulting in a negative potential utilization efficiency (0.2). Leaf defoliation intensity was similar (54.4%) across feeding systems and defoliation frequency was higher in supplemented heifers. The 29.2% increase in stocking rate of heifers fed corn or oat grain as supplement did not affect the dynamics of ryegrass biomass flows, but reduced leaf blade intake adjusted to heifer body weight leading to alterations in the defoliation frequency of ryegrass pasture.(AU)

The determination of biomass flows can assist on improving pasture fertilization techniques, contributing to identify the best management methods and, in relation the use of fertilizers. Nitrogen deficiency in pastures can reduce forage production. On the other hand, there is an environmental concern on nitrogen (N) losses when this nutrient is used in excess and this concern guides the search for new grazing systems that optimize its use. Leaf biomass flow, intensity and frequency of defoliation were evaluated in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) fertilized with Zero, 100, 200 or 300 kg/ha nitrogen (N) as urea. The grazing method was put and take stocking in order to keep the forage mass at 3,000 kg/ha DM. The experimental animals were Angus heifers with an initial age of 15 months and body weight of 241.5±5 kg. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with four treatments and variable number of experimental units. The highest growth of leaf blades was achieved with 100 kg/ha N. Senescence and intake flows and defoliation intensity were similar among the N levels used. The frequency of return to the same tiller (days) was influenced by N levels and evaluation periods. Our findings recommend the use of 100 kg/ha N in Alexandergrass pasture.

The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological responses during the time limit at the intensity of the peak velocity of the Carminatti's test (T-CAR). Ten professional futsal players (age, 27.4 ± 5.8 years, body mass, 78.8 ± 8.5 kg, body height, 175.8 ± 6.8 cm, body fat mass, 14.1 ± 2.6%) took part in the study. The players performed three tests, with an interval of at least 48 hours, as follows: the T-CAR to determine the peak velocity and the maximal heart rate; an incremental treadmill protocol to determine the maximal physiological responses; and a time limit running test at the peak velocity reached in the T-CAR. During the last two tests, a portable gas analyzer was used for direct measurement of cardiorespiratory variables. It was shown that the peak velocity was not significantly different from the maximal aerobic speed achieved in the laboratory (p = 0.213). All athletes reached their maximum oxygen uptake during the time limit test. The maximum oxygen uptake achieved during the time limit test was not different from that observed in the laboratory condition (51.1 ± 4.7 vs. 49.6 ± 4.7 ml·kg-1·min-1, respectively, p = 0.100). In addition, Bland and Altman plots evidenced acceptable agreement between them. On average, athletes took ~140 s to achieve maximum oxygen uptake and maintained it for ~180 s. Therefore, the peak velocity intensity can be used as an indicator of maximal aerobic power of futsal athletes and the time limit can be used as a reference for training prescription.

RESUMO

Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the level of agreement between critical power (CP) and intensity corresponding to 50% of the difference (50% ∆) between oxygen uptake (VO2) at lactate threshold (LT) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in untrained subjects during cycling exercise. Fifteen healthy male subjects (age: 26.0 ± 3.5 years; body weight: 76.6 ± 10.4 kg; height: 178.2 ± 7.6 cm) volunteered to participate in the study. Each subject performed a series of tests to determine LT, VO2LT, CP, VO2CP, 50% ∆, VO250% ∆, and VO2max. The values LT, CP, VO2CP, 50% ∆, VO250% ∆ and VO2max were 109 ± 15 W, 1.84 ± 0.23 L.min-1, 207 ± 17 W, 2.78 ± 0.27 L.min-1, 206 ± 19 W, 2.77 ± 0.29 L.min-1, and 3.71 ± 0.49 L.min-1, respectively. No signficant difference was found between CP and 50% ∆ (t = 0.16; p = 0.87) or between VO2CP and VO250% ∆ (t = 0.12; p = 0.90). However, the bias ± 95% limits of agreement for comparison between CP and 50% ∆ and between VO2CP and VO250% ∆ were 1 ± 27 W (0.3 ± 14.1%) and 0.01 ± 0.24 L.min-1 (0.2 ± 8.9%), respectively. In summary, the mean CP and 50% ∆ values were not significantly different. However, considering the limits of agreement between the two intensities, CP estimated based on 50% ∆ might result in a remarkable error when the absolute variability of individual differences is taken into account.
