Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) is a rare type of potentially fatal childhood brain tumor. The present study aimed to examine the overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) outcomes of pediatric patients with ATRT and to analyze the impact of different prognostic factors, including age, sex, tumor site and size, metastatic disease, the extent of resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, on survival. The present study included 47 patients with ATRT treated at the Children's Cancer Hospital of Egypt (Cairo, Egypt) between July 2007 and December 2017. These patients were treated according to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute protocol 02-294 for 51 weeks. Various prognostic factors, including age, sex, tumor size and initial metastatic status, exhibited no impact on the radiological response measured at 6 weeks and at the end of treatment. The primary tumor site significantly affected the response to treatment at 6 weeks (P=0.008). Toxicity-related mortality occurred in 29.8% of patients. The median duration of the treatment protocol was 66.9 weeks. The duration of treatment was in the present cohort was longer than the actual 51 weeks of the protocol due to prolonged supportive care of the included patients. Patients who encountered toxicity received reduced dose of chemotherapy in the subsequent cycles in the protocol. Age, initial metastatic status, tumor site and resection extent did not significantly affect the patient outcomes. Preoperative tumor size significantly affected the EFS (P=0.03) and OS (P=0.04). Radiotherapy administration significantly affected the OS (P<0.001) and EFS (P<0.001). The median EFS and OS of patients were 9.3 and 10.3 months, respectively. A total of 24 (51.1%) patients exhibited disease progression or recurrence. The progression sites were local (n=6), metastatic (n=9) or both local and metastatic (n=9). The results of the present study demonstrated that the therapeutic regimen should be patient-adjusted to maintain the treatment intensity and avoid toxicity-related mortality. In lower middle-income countries, short and intensified induction followed by consolidation of treatment, either by single or tandem autologous stem cell transplant, is needed to avoid prolonged exposure to myelosuppression and toxicity-related mortality.

Akabane virus (AKAV) is an insect-borne virus belonging to the genus Orthobunyavirus of the family Peribunyaviridae. It is the etiologic agent of Akabane disease (AD), which emerged in Asia, Australia, and the Middle East causing severe economic losses among domestic and wild animals. AKAV has not received enough attention in Egypt, and its evidence among Egyptian animals has never been reported. Therefore, this study used ELISA assay to investigate the seroprevalence of AKAV among Egyptian dairy and beef cattle in eight localities of Beheira province, north Egypt. Out of 368 investigated plasma samples, the overall AKAV seroprevalence was 54.3% (95% CI: 50.8-61.4). AKAV antibodies were detected in all examined cattle farms (7/7) and the majority of abattoirs (8/9). Age, sex, breed, and location of the tested cattle were analyzed as risk factors for AKAV infection. A higher significant increase in seropositivity was obtained in cattle who were aged >5 years (p < 0.0001; OR = 9.4), females (p < 0.0001, OR = 8.3), or Holstein breed (p < 0.0001, OR = 22.6) than in younger ages, males, and Mixed and Colombian zebu breeds, respectively. Moreover, a significant variation in AKAV seroprevalence between the tested locations was noticed. Ultimately, a multivariable analysis concluded that age (p = 0.002, OR = 3.32, 95% CI = 1.57-7.04) and breed (p = 0.03, OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.05-2.72) were significant risks for AKAV infection. In conclusion, this study is the first to detect AKAV infection in Egyptian animals.

In this work, the effect of using Ag-doped TiO2 nanopigments on optical, mechanical and antimicrobial properties of coated paper was explored. Furthermore, the long-term antimicrobial activity of the coated paper was examined for up to 25 years. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been synthesized and doped with different percentages of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using a simple wet chemical approach. The Ag@TiO2 modified nanopigments were in the form of nanorods with an average size of about 20 nm as observed from TEM images. Increasing Ag content from 0.01 to 1.0% showed an increase in the mechanical properties of coated paper in terms of tensile, stretching, tensile energy absorption and burst while preserving the optical properties. Moreover, the antimicrobial inhibition activity increased with increasing the Ag content. The 1% Ag@TiO2 showed a long-lasting antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) Gram-positive bacteria even after 25 years of ageing (93.4% inhibition). Investigation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and reaction mechanism of antimicrobial activity over Ag/TiO2 under visible light is proposed. These results suggest that Ag/TiO2 NPs can be potentially used as a disinfection coating for paper and improving its mechanical properties.
