A rare case of primary hydatid cyst of the mesentery is described. Though cystic echinococcosis infestation can occur in any part of the body primary peritoneal involvement is rare. The mechanism of primitive peritoneal infection by the parasite is still unclear. The hypotheses which can explain this rare primary localization, the sensitivity and the specificity of the serological and instrumental tests and the therapeutic management of this atypical lesion are discussed.

The Authors report a case of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the testis. Although lymphoma is a rare neoplasm, it is commonest tumor in the elderly age. Surgical therapy is essential but some times it can be associated to radio-chemotherapy.

The efficacy of short term prophylaxis in the prevention of infection has been tested in 72 patients who underwent surgical treatment for colorectal pathology. General tolerance to the antibiotics was good. The Authors took this remark as a starting point for reviewing the literature and making comments.

The Authors have reported a case of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma. The retroperitoneal localization is quite unusual and early diagnosis is difficult. Only surgery operation and radio-chemotherapy can improve the prognosis. Tumor size is the major prognostic factor.

Personal experience in the treatment of 93 cases of cancer of the large bowel and rectal localization is reported 32 patients (A group) received blood transfusions, 61 patients (B group) hadn't any transfusions or autotransfusions. Postoperative morbidity was 34.37% in A group and 14.75% in B group. The Authors stress the basic importance of autotransfusions as well in patients surgically treated for colorectal cancer.

Lipomas are an uncommon cause of small-bowel obstruction. The symptoms are intermittent and nonspecific. The Authors report a case in which intussusception was diagnosed with echography and the obstruction was treated with resection. They conclude that lipomas must always be considered in the differential diagnosis of intrabdominal neoplasms and in intestinal obstructions.

The symptomatology of Eating Disorders (ED) varies considerably and it is of interest to determine whether one can attribute this to different personality structures and hence establish the most effective treatment. The present study investigates the psychopathological characteristics of clinical ED subjects divided by diagnostic subtypes, age at onset and duration of disorder on admission. Three hundred and twenty-seven women were administered the EAT 40 and MMPI. One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc multiple comparisons were performed on subsamples: no significant differences emerged with regard to age at onset and duration of ED, whereas the diagnostic subtypes obtained significantly different MMPI validity scale scores. These results can be referred to a common core of ED represented by cognitive organization and personal meaning.

Results from retirement research suggest the following conclusions about health, retirement, and the likely effects of the changes in retirement age made by the 1983 Social Security Amendments. First, after controlling for non-health-related factors, it is clear that older workers who are in poor health retire earlier than workers with similar economic circumstances who are in good health. Second, the research reviewed here tends to indicate that the response of the average worker to the changes made in the social security full retirement age by the 1983 amendments will be small. Estimates suggest than the average increase in the retirement age will be between zero and 3 months. Finally, while the evidence is much less certain, research results suggest that older workers in poor health may respond even less than the average worker. It is not possible to say precisely what will happen to lifetime incomes as a result of these changes. A small labor supply response suggests that not much of the lost social security benefits will be made up by additional earnings, either for workers on average or for workers in poor health. However, earnings are only part of the total income picture. Other than a brief mention, this article has not addressed how workers may adjust their savings behavior, or how private pensions may adjust, and particularly whether the potential for adjustment through these avenues is the same for workers in poor health as for the average worker.

A classic case of stylohyoid syndrome, in which the patient complained of vague oral pain, dysphagia, and pain when turning the head to either side, is presented. Although radiographic evidence confirmed the diagnosis, a number of practitioners failed to identify the cause of the patient's discomfort, which ultimately led to her death.

A case of a sclerotic mandibular bone lesion interpreted as a true osteoma has been described, along with the differential diagnosis and treatment. Because the radiographic appearance is not specific for any one lesion, microscopic examination is essential to establish the definitive diagnosis.
