The cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of three organic platinum(II) complexes 1-3 have been studied in two strains of murine lymphoma L5178Y cells. (1) [Pt(Amp)Cl] (S,N,N) (Amp, ampicillin); (2) [Pt(Met(O))Cl2] (S,N), (met(O), L-methionine sulfoxide); (3) [Pt(Met(O))(R-IDA)] (S,N) [N,N), (R-IDA, 2,4-N-(dimethylacetanilide)-iminodiacetic acid). It has been confirmed that the cytotoxic and mutagenic action of Pt-complexes depends on the structure of stable ligand and the number and structure of the leaving groups. The highest cytotoxicity and mutagenicity was found in cells treated with the dichloromethioninesulfoxideplatinum(II) complex.

The authors investigated the immunological and pharmacological activity of N-/2, 4-dimethylacetanilido/iminodiacetic complex compounds with calcium and zinc (HEPIDA-Ca and HEPIDA-Zn). An antiinflammatory, therapeutic effect of these compounds and also an immunosuppressive action were observed. Both complex compounds inhibited the GvH reaction in rats and attenuated the transplantation barrier.

Biodistribution studies of 169Yb-dichlorodimethioninoplatin (II) in mice, bearing Ehrlich or leukemia tumors, showed increased uptake of the complex in the tumors. A large difference in the retention of the total injected activity was found depending on the optical isomeric form of the methionine part of the complex.

The contents of Se, Zn, Co, Fe and Rb in several organs of Wistar rats were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) after injections of SeO2 and glutathione (GSH). Se was incorporated in all the examined organs, and the efficiency of incorporation does not depend upon the sequence of injection with SeO2 and GSH. The sequence of these injections affects the contents of the other elements in all the examined organs.

The concentrations of Yb, Se and Zn in the brains of rats were determined after the injection of ytterbium chloride and selenodiglutathione--single or together--by neutron activation analysis. Both Yb and Se were incorporated in all the investigated brain tissues and they also caused changes in the Zn concentration.

The incorporation of Se and Yb into the eyes of mice has been studied. Selenodiglutathione, (GS)2Se, or ytterbium chloride, YbCl3, were injected intraperitoneally into mice: either alone, combined, or after various time intervals. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was applied as the analytical method for the determination of the levels of Se and Yb. The concentrations of both investigated elements were highest in the retinal tissue of the eye. YbCl3 influenced the distribution of Se in the eye.
