Faba bean is a protein-rich starchy grain that is underutilised in the UK. The starch of faba bean can be modified using environmentally friendly methods like dry heat treatment (DHT) to enhance functional and its physicochemical properties. This study investigated the impact of dry heat temperature and time on the structure, functional and physicochemical properties of faba bean starch (FBS) using a two-factor central composite rotatable design. Factors (DHT temperature:100-150 °C and DHT time:0.5-5 h) with their respective α mid-point values led to 13 experimental runs. Selected pasting and functional properties were measured as response variables. Corn starch was included as a reference and compared with the FBS modified using the optimized conditions. DHT increased peak (approx. 2205-2267 cP), final (approx. 3525-3642 cP) and setback (approx. 1887-1993 cP) viscosities but decreased the amylose content of FBS. Colour, as measured by lightness value, morphology and crystalline type were not altered but the starches showed a loss of order and an increase in crystallinity after DHT. FBS appeared resilient to DHT but showed higher swelling power and pasting properties compared to the corn starch control. The optimum DHT conditions to produce starch with desirable properties are a temperature of 100 °C for 0.1716 h, with a desirability factor of 66 %.

Burn wounds are associated with infections, drug resistance, allergic reactions, odour, bleeding, excess exudates, and scars, requiring prolonged hospital stay. It is crucial to develop wound dressings that can effectively combat allergic reactions and drug resistance, inhibit infections, and absorb excess exudates to accelerate wound healing. To overcome the above-mentioned problems associated with burn wounds, SA/PVA/PLGA/Capparis sepiaria and SA/PVA/Capparis sepiaria nanofibers incorporated with Capparis sepiaria plant extract were prepared using an electrospinning technique. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of the extract into the nanofibers without any interaction between the extract and the polymers. The nanofibers displayed porous morphology and a rough surface suitable for cellular adhesion and proliferation. SA/PVA/PLGA/Capparis sepiaria and SA/PVA/Capparis sepiaria nanofibers demonstrated significant antibacterial effects against wound infection-associated bacterial strains: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Mycobaterium smegmatis, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Proteus vulgaris, and Staphylococcus aureus. Cytocompatibility studies using HaCaT cells revealed the non-toxicity of the nanofibers. SA/PVA/PLGA/Capparis sepiaria and SA/PVA/Capparis sepiaria nanofibers exhibited hemostatic properties, resulting from the synergistic effect of the plant extract and polymers. The in vitro scratch wound healing assay showed that the SA/PVA/Capparis sepiaria nanofiber wound-healing capability is more than the plant extract and a commercially available wound dressing. The wound-healing potential of SA/PVA/Capparis sepiaria nanofiber is attributed to the synergistic effect of the phytochemicals present in the extract, their porosity, and the ECM-mimicking structure of the nanofibers. The findings suggest that the electrospun nanofibers loaded with Capparis sepiaria extract are promising wound dressings that should be explored for burn wounds.

South Africa's efforts toward eliminating malaria have positioned the country in the pre-elimination stage. Imported and sub-microscopic cases still contribute to the persistence of malaria in regions of low transmission as identified in this study where diagnostics is built largely on the use of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT). However, the presence of Pfhrp2/3 gene deletion is known to interfere with the accuracy of diagnosis with the use of RDT. Malaria elimination and detection of Pfhrp2/3 gene deletion in the pre-elimination setting requires accurate molecular surveillance. With the core objective of this study being the determination of the presence sub-microscopic malaria cases and deleted Pfhrp2/3 gene markers, a total of 354 samples were collected from five districts of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. These samples were prepared for molecular analysis using primers and PCR conditions specific for amplification of 18S rRNA and msp-1gene. Positive amplicons were analysed for the presence of Pfhrp2/3 and flanking genes, along with Sanger sequencing and phylogenetic studies. Out of 354 samples collected 339 were tested negative with PfHRP2 based RDTs. Of these Pfhrp2 and Pfhrp3 gene deletions were confirmed in 94.7% (18/19) and 100% (19/19) respectively. High migration rate (75%) among the study participants was noted and phylogenetic analysis of sequenced isolates showed close evolutionary relatedness with India, United Kingdom, Iran, and Myanmar and China isolates. Molecular-based test is recommended as an essential surveillance tool for malaria management programs as the target focuses on elimination.

This study investigated the potential of decolourised Moringa oleifera leaf powder (D-MOLP) in cookies to meet consumer demand for healthier food options, addressing the issue of low acceptability due to its green colour. D-MOLP and its non-decolourised counterpart (ND-MOLP) were incorporated into wheat flour to produce cookies. The results showed that neither decolourisation nor addition level (2.5 or 7.5%) significantly affected water activity or flour functionality, though slight differences in cookie colour were observed. The Moringa-enriched cookies exhibited an improved spread ratio as well as higher protein, phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and in vitro protein digestibility compared to control cookies. The detected phenolic acids included chlorogenic, ferulic, and fumaric acids, with the D-MOLP cookies showing superior nutritional properties, likely due to nutrient concentration and reduced antinutrients. Notably, glutamic acid was the major amino acid in all the cookies, but only lysine significantly increased across the cookie types. This suggests D-MOLP could be a promising alternative for food enrichment. Future research should address the consumer acceptability, volatile components, and shelf-life of D-MOLP-enriched cookies.

Nernstian proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental process central to many physical and biological systems, such as electrocatalysis, enzyme operation, DNA biosynthesis, pH-/bio-sensors, and electrochemical energy storage devices. We report herein the discovery of super-Nernstian PCET behavior with two protons per electron transferred in the electrochemical doping of a redox conjugated polymer, phenazine-substituted ladder poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL-P), in aqueous electrolyte. We show that the super-Nernstian response originates from existence of multiredox centers that have a gradient of pKa on the conjugated polymer. Our use of various pH-dependent in operando techniques to probe the nature of charge carriers in n-doped BBL-P found that polarons are the charge carriers at low to intermediate levels of doping (0.1-1.0 electron per repeat unit (eru)) whereas at higher doing levels (1.3 eru), polarons, polaron pairs, and bipolarons co-exist, which evolve into strongly coupled polaron pairs at the highest doping levels (>1.5 eru). We show that PCET-assisted n-doping of BBL-P results in very high redox capacity (>1200 F cm-3) in acidic electrolyte. Our results provide important new insights into PCET in organic materials and the nature of charge carriers in n-doped conjugated polymers while having implications for various electrochemical devices.

Wound healing following skin tumour surgery still remains a major challenge. To address this issue, polysaccharide-loaded nanofibrous mats have been engineered as skin patches on the wound site to improve wound healing while simultaneously eliminating residual cancer cells which may cause cancer relapse. The marine derived polysaccharides kappa-carrageenan (KCG) and fucoidan (FUC) were blended with polydioxanone (PDX) nanofibers due to their inherent anti-cancer activity conferred by the sulphate groups as well as their immunomodulatory properties which can reduce inflammation resulting in accelerated wound healing. KCG and FUC were released sustainably from the blend nanofibers via the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics. MTT assays, live/dead staining and SEM images demonstrated the toxicity of KCG and FUC towards skin cancer MP 41 cells. In addition, MP 41 cells showed reduced metastatic potential when grown on KCG or FUC containing mats. Both KCG and FUC were non- cytotoxic to healthy L 929 fibroblast cells. In vivo studies on healthy Wistar rats confirmed the non-toxicity of the nanofibrous patches as well as their improved and scarless wound healing potential. In vivo studies on tumour xenograft model further showed a reduction of 7.15 % in tumour volume in only 4 days following application of the transdermal patch.

INTRODUCTION: Spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs) represent a distinct subtype of meningioma characterized by their unique multi-compartmental invasion pattern. Previous studies have investigated correlations between SOMs and visual manifestations. However, our comprehension of pain associated with SOMs remains limited. This study aims to provide insight into the pathophysiology underlying SOM-related pain through measurements of tumor volume and superior orbital fissure (SOF) narrowing. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent surgical resection of a SOM between 2000 and 2022. Preoperative CT and/or MRI scans were analyzed, and the tumor volume of each segment was measured. Bony 3D reconstructions were used to measure the area of the SOF, and SOF narrowing was calculated. RESULTS: The study cohort included 66 patients diagnosed with SOMs, among which 25.8% (n = 17) presented with pain. Postoperatively, 14/17 (82.4%) of patients reported pain improvement. There was no significant correlation between the total volume or the volume of tumor within each compartment and the presence of pain on presentation (p > 0.05). The median SOF narrowing was significantly different between patients presenting with and without tumor-associated pain with median of 11 mm2 (IQR 2.8-22.3) and 2 mm2 (IQR 0-6), respectively (p = 0.005). Using logistic regression, a significant correlation between the degree of SOF narrowing and the presence of SOM-associated pain on presentation was identified, with an aOR of 1.2 (95% CI 1.12-1.3, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: While the exact cause of tumor-associated pain remains unclear, SOF narrowing seems to play a role in pain among SOM patients. Based on the radiological characteristics, SOF neurovascular decompression is recommended in SOM patients.

The design of targeted antiangiogenic nanovectors for the delivery of anticancer drugs presents a viable approach for effective management of nonsmall-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Herein, we report on the fabrication of a targeted delivery nanosystem for paclitaxel (PTX) functionalized with a short antimatrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) CTT peptide for selective MMP-2 targeting and effective antitumor activity in NSCLC. The fabrication of the targeted nanosystem (CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@CTT) involved coating of superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) via chemisorption, onto which PTX was adsorbed, and subsequent surface functionalization with carboxylic acid groups for conjugation of the CTT peptide. CLA-coated PTX SPIONs@CTT had a mean particle size of 99.4 nm and a PTX loading efficiency of ∼98.5%. The nanosystem exhibited a site-specific in vitro PTX release and a marked antiproliferative action on lung adenocarcinoma cells. The CTT-functionalized nanosystem significantly inhibited MMP-2 secretion by almost 70% from endothelial cells, indicating specific anti-MMP-2 activity. Treatment of tumor-bearing mice with subcutaneous injection of the CTT-functionalized nanosystem resulted in 69.7% tumor inhibition rate, and the administration of the nanosystem subcutaneously prolonged the half-life of PTX and circulation time in vivo. As such, CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@CTT presents with potential for application as a targeted nanomedicine in NSCLC management.

Most currently known n-type conjugated polymers have a semiflexible chain topology, and their charge carrier mobilities are known to peak at modest chain lengths of below 40-60 repeat units. Herein, we show that the field-effect electron mobility of a model n-type conjugated polymer that has a rigid-rod chain topology grows continuously without saturation, even at a chain length exceeding 250 repeat units. We found the mechanism underlying the novel chain length-dependent electron transport to originate from the reduced structural disorder and energetic disorder with the increasing degree of polymerization inherent to the rigid-rod chain topology. Furthermore, we demonstrate a unique chain length-dependent decay of threshold voltage, which is rationalized by decreased trap densities and trap depths with respect to the degree of polymerization. Our findings provide new insights into the role of polymer chain topology in electron transport and demonstrate the promise of rigid-rod chain architectures for the design of future high-mobility conjugated polymers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spheno-orbital meningiomas arise from the arachnoid villi cap cells at the sphenoid ridge and have the ability to spread through soft tissue extension and cranial bone invasion. Owing to their orbital hyperostosis and intraorbital soft tissue extension, they commonly present with ophthalmologic manifestations. This study aims to investigate the correlation between tumor volume with the presenting symptoms and postoperative outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent surgical resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas. Tumor volumes in different compartments were measured using preoperative and postoperative imaging. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to identify correlations between tumor volumes and presenting symptoms preoperatively and postoperative outcomes. RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were included in this study, of whom 86.4% had proptosis, 80.3% had decreased visual acuity (VA), 30.3% had visual field defects, and 13.6% had periorbital edema. Preoperatively, proptosis linearly correlated with intraosseous tumor volume (coefficient = 0.6, P < .001), while the decrease in baseline VA correlated with the intraorbital tumor volume (coefficient = 0.3, P = .01). The odds of periorbital edema were found to increase with an increase in intraosseous tumor volume with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.4 (95% CI, 1.1-1.7, P = .003), while the odds of visual field defects were found to increase with an increase in intraorbital tumor volume with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.7 (95% CI, 1.3-5.6, P = .01). Postoperatively, the volume of intraosseous tumor resected linearly correlated with the improvement in proptosis (coefficient = 0.7, P < .001), while the volume of intraorbital tumor resected linearly correlated with improvement in VA (coefficient = 0.5, P < .001) and with a larger effect size in patients presenting with moderate-to-severe decrease in VA preoperatively (coefficient = 0.8). CONCLUSION: Underscoring the importance of each tumor compartment relative to the patient's symptomatology serves as a valuable guide in implementing a compartmentalized resection approach tailored to the surgical objectives.

The optimal treatment of diabetes (in particular, type 1 diabetes-T1D) remains a challenge. Closed-loop systems (implants/inserts) provide significant advantages for glucose responsivity and providing real-time sustained release of rapid-acting insulin. Concanavalin A (ConA), a glucose affinity agent, has been used to design closed-loop insulin delivery systems but not without significant risk of leakage of ConA from the matrices and poor mechanical strength of the hydrogels impacting longevity and control of insulin release. Therefore, this work focused on employing a thermoresponsive co-forming matrix between Pluronic F-127 (PL) and structurally robust chitosan (CHT) via EDC/NHS coupling (i.e., covalent linkage of -NH2 from CHT and ConA to the -COOH of PL). The system was characterized for its chemical structure stability and integrity (FTIR, XRD and TGA), injectability, rheological parameters and hydrogel morphology (Texture Analysis, Elastosens TM Bio2 and SEM). The prepared hydrogels demonstrated shear-thinning for injectability with a maximum force of 4.9 ± 8.3 N in a 26G needle with sol-gel transitioning from 25 to 38 °C. The apparent yield stress value of the hydrogel was determined to be 67.47 Pa. The insulin loading efficiency within the hydrogel matrix was calculated to be 46.8%. Insulin release studies revealed glucose responsiveness in simulated glycemic media (4 and 10 mg/mL) over 7 days (97%) (305 nm via fluorescence spectrophotometry). The MTT studies were performed over 72 h on RIN-5F pancreatic cells with viability results >80%. Results revealed that the thermoresponsive hydrogel is a promising alternative to current closed-loop insulin delivery systems.

A design has been established for the surface decoration of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor peptide, HRH, to formulate a targeted paclitaxel (PTX) delivery nanosystem with notable tumor targetability and antiangiogenic activity. The design methodology included (i) tandem surface functionalization via coupling reactions, (ii) pertinent physicochemical characterization, (iii) in vitro assessment of drug release, anti-proliferative activity, and quantification of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) levels, and (iv) in vivo testing using a lung tumor xenograft mouse model. Formulated CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH depicted a size and surface charge of 108.5 ± 3.5 nm and -30.4 ± 2.3 mV, respectively, and a quasi-spherical shape relative to pristine SPIONs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and estimation of free carboxylic groups supported the preparation of the CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH. CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH exhibited high PTX loading efficiency (98.5%) and sustained release in vitro, with a marked dose dependent anti-proliferative activity in A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells, complimented by an enhanced cellular uptake. CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH significantly reduced secretion levels of VEGF-A in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells from 46.9 to 35.6 pg/mL compared to untreated control. A 76.6% tumor regression was recorded in a lung tumor xenograft mouse model following intervention with CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH, demonstrating tumor targetability and angiogenesis inhibition. CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH enhanced the half-life of PTX by almost 2-folds and demonstrated a prolonged PTX plasma circulation time from a subcutaneous injection (SC). Thus, it is suggested that CLA-coated PTX-SPIONs@HRH could provide a potential effective treatment modality for non-small-cell lung carcinoma as a nanomedicine.

Aim: Essential oils are promising antibacterial and wound-healing agents that should be explored for the design of wound dressings. Materials & methods: Topical gels prepared from a combination of carboxymethyl cellulose and poloxamer were incorporated with tea tree and lavender oil together with Ag nanoparticles. In vitro release, cytotoxicity, antibacterial, and wound healing studies were performed. Results: The gels displayed good spreadability with viscosity in the range of 210-1200 cP. The gels displayed promising antibacterial activity against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria used in the study. The % cell viability of the gels was more than 90.83%. Conclusion: The topical gels displayed excellent wound closure in vitro revealing that they are potential wound dressings for bacteria-infected wounds.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are used extensively to achieve site-specific drug delivery with improved bioavailability and reduced toxicity. This work focused on a new approach to provide site-specific stimuli-responsive delivery of SLNs loaded within thermo-sonic nano-organogel (TNO) variants to deliver the model chemotherapeutic agent 5-FU in treating cervical cancer. Pharmaceutically stable nanospherical SLNs comprising poly-L-lactic acid (PLA), palmitic acid (PA), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared and incorporated into TNO variants augmented by external thermal and ultrasound stimuli for release of 5-FU in the cervix. Results revealed that rate-modulated 5-FU release was achieved from SLNs (particle size =450.9 nm; PDI =0.541; zeta potential =-23.2 mV; %DL =33%) within an organogel upon exposure to either a single (thermo-) and/or both (thermo-sonic) stimuli. 5FU was released from all TNO variants with an initial burst on day 1 followed by sustained release over 14 days. TNO 1 provided desirable release over 15 days (44.29% vs. 67.13% under single (T) or combined (TU) stimuli, respectively). Release rates were primarily influenced by the SLN:TO ratio in tandem with biodegradation and hydrodynamic influx. Biodegradation by day 7 revealed that variant TNO 1 (1:5) released 5FU (46.8%) analogous to its initial mass than the other TNO variants (i.e., ratios of 2:5 and 3:5). FT-IR spectra revealed assimilation of the system components and corroborative with the DSC and XRD analysis (i.e., in ratios of PA:PLA 1:1 and 2:1). In conclusion, the TNO variants produced may be used as a potential stimuli-responsive platform for the site-specific delivery of chemotherapeutic agents such as 5-FU to treat cervical cancer.

Bread dough and bread are dispersed systems consisting of starch polymers that interact with other flour components and added ingredients during processing. In addition to gluten proteins, starch impacts the quality characteristics of the final baked product. Wheat starch consists of amylose and amylopectin organized into alternating semicrystalline and amorphous layers in granules that vary in size and are embedded in the endosperm protein matrix. Investigation of the molecular movement of protons in the dough system provides a comprehensive insight into granular swelling and amylose leaching. Starch interacts with water, proteins, amylase, lipids, yeast, and salt during various stages of breadmaking. As a result, the starch polymers within the produced crumb and crust, together with the rate of retrogradation and staling due to structural reorganization, moisture migration, storage temperature, and relative humidity determines the final product's textural perception. This review aims to provide insight into wheat starch composition and functionality and critically review recently published research results with reference to starch structure-function relationship and factors affecting it during dough formation, fermentation, baking, cooling, and storage of bread.

Antecedentes. El confinamiento durante la primera oleada de COVID-19 en España se ha relacionado con niveles mayores de ansiedad en la población general. Sin embargo, no se ha estudiado el impacto emocional en los cuidadores de personas con trastornos del neurodesarrollo (TND).Método. Se distribuyó un cuestionario a las organizaciones que prestan apoyo a las personas con TND y sus familias. Se analizaron los datos de los cuidadores de personas con trastorno del espectro autista (TEA) (N=17), síndrome de Down (N=25) y síndrome de Williams (N=18).Resultados. Los cuidadores informaron de preocupaciones relacionadas con la situación de pandemia y confinamiento. Los cuidadores de personas con TEA mostraron mayor preocupación sobre los conflictos familiares. Los tres grupos informaron de niveles de ansiedad más altos durante el confinamiento. Predijeron la ansiedad el trastorno de ansiedad previo y el diagnóstico del hijo/a. Conclusiones. Los predictores de ansiedad en los cuidadores de individuos con TND difieren de los reportados previamente en la población general española. Los resultados sugieren que el confinamiento fue especialmente duro paralas familias de personas con TEA. Las políticas públicas deberían considerar las necesidades de las personas con TND y sus cuidadores para minimizar las consecuencias negativas de la pandemia. (AU)


Background. The lockdown during the first wave of COVID-19 in Spain has been related to higher levels of anxietyin the general population. However, the emotional impact on Spanish caregivers of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) has not been studied so far. Methods. An online questionnaire was distributed to Spanish organisations providing support to individuals with NDD and their families. Data from caregivers of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (N = 17), Down syndrome (DS)(N = 25) and Williams syndrome (WS) (N = 18) were analysed. Results. All caregivers reported concerns directly related to the pandemic and lockdown situation. Caregivers of individuals with ASD showed higher level of concern about the possibility of family conflict. All three groups reported higher levels of anxiety during the lockdown. Anxiety was predicted by previous anxiety disorder and the child’s diagnosis. Conclusions. Predictors of anxiety in caregivers of individuals with NDD differ from those previously reported in the general Spanish population. The results suggest that confinement in Spain was especially demanding for families of individuals with ASD. Public policies should consider the particular needs of people with NND and their caregivers to minimise the negative consequences of the ongoing pandemic.(AU)

The use of biomass for the development of environmentally friendly and industrially useful materials is still attracting global interest. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals were prepared from Siam weed. The production steps involved dewaxing the biomass sample, bleaching treatment, alkali treatment and acid hydrolysis. The resulting cellulose nanocrystals were characterized using Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. Chemical composition results showed that Siam weed contained 39.6% cellulose, 27.5% hemicellulose, 28.7% lignin and 4.2% extractive. FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of cellulose and absence of lignin and hemicellulose while XRD analysis revealed that the cellulose nanocrystals have crystallinity index of 66.2% and particle size of 2.2 nm. TGA revealed that thermal stability of raw Siam weed is lower than that of its cellulose nanocrystals due to the presence of the non-cellulosic component with lower temperature of degradation. SEM revealed that degradation of cellulosic chain had occurred. TEM confirmed that the crystal size is in the nanoscale with an average size <100 nm. DLS data revealed a nanocellulose with an average hydrodynamic size of 213 nm and a zeta potential at -9.57 mV.

We study the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) performance of the ladder polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in an attempt to better understand how an apparently hydrophobic side-chain-free polymer is able to operate as an OECT with favorable redox kinetics in an aqueous environment. We examine two BBLs of different molecular masses from different sources. Regardless of molecular mass, both BBLs show significant film swelling during the initial reduction step. By combining electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance gravimetry, in-operando atomic force microscopy, and both ex-situ and in-operando grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we provide a detailed structural picture of the electrochemical charge injection process in BBL in the absence of any hydrophilic side-chains. Compared with ex-situ measurements, in-operando GIWAXS shows both more swelling upon electrochemical doping than has previously been recognized and less contraction upon dedoping. The data show that BBL films undergo an irreversible hydration driven by the initial electrochemical doping cycle with significant water retention and lamellar expansion that persists across subsequent oxidation/reduction cycles. This swelling creates a hydrophilic environment that facilitates the subsequent fast hydrated ion transport in the absence of the hydrophilic side-chains used in many other polymer systems. Due to its rigid ladder backbone and absence of hydrophilic side-chains, the primary BBL water uptake does not significantly degrade the crystalline order, and the original dehydrated, unswelled state can be recovered after drying. The combination of doping induced hydrophilicity and robust crystalline order leads to efficient ionic transport and good stability.
