RESUMO

The 2,2'-bipyridyl-6,6'-dicarboxylate ligand (bdc) has been shown in prior work to effectively capture the uranyl(VI) ion, UO22+, from aqueous solutions. However, the redox properties of the uranyl complex of this ligand have not been addressed despite the relevance of uranium-centered reduction to the nuclear fuel cycle and the presence of a bipyridyl core in bdc, a motif long recognized for its ability to support redox chemistry. Here, the bdc complex of UO22+ (1-UO2) has been synthetically prepared and isolated under nonaqueous conditions for the study of its reductive chemical and electrochemical behavior. Spectrochemical titration data collected using decamethylcobaltocene (Cp*2Co) as the reductant demonstrate that 1e- reduction of 1-UO2 is accessible, and companion near-infrared and infrared spectroscopic data, along with theoretical findings from density functional theory, provide evidence that supports the accessibility of the U(V) oxidation state. Data obtained for control ruthenium complexes of bdc and related polypyridyl dicarboxylate ligands provide a counterpoint to these findings; ligand-centered reduction of bdc in these control compounds occurs at potentials more negative than those measured for reduction of 1-UO2, further supporting the generation of uranium(V) in 1-UO2. Taken together, these results underscore the usefulness of bdc as a ligand for actinyl ions and suggest that it could be useful for further studies of the reductive activation of these unique species.

Cytokine receptors are associated with tumor cell growth by increasing proliferation, metastasis and regulating self-renewal of cancer stem cells (SCs). There is a strong association between cytokine IL-8 receptor (CXCR1) over-expression and cells displaying SC characteristics. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) causes differentiation, inhibition of cell proliferation and increased apoptosis of the breast epithelium. hCG receptor (LHCGR) expression in breast tumors and in breast cancer cell lines is undetectable or low. In this study, our objective was to assess and compare the effects of hCG and a 15 amino acid hCG fragment of the hormone on mRNA expression of CXCR1 and LHCGR on normal breast epithelial cells (MCF-10F) by real time RT-PCR after treatment with hCG or a hCG fragment for 15 days. Cell proliferation was also measured. hCG and the hCG fragment decreased cell proliferation in both groups. The compounds upregulated LHCGR expression and downregulated CXCR1 expression. It is possible to postulate that an increase of LHCGR mRNA seems to respond to the decrease of CXCR1 expression. These genes probably act synergistically to reduce the amount of cancer SCs in the mammary gland. Thereby, the use of hCG or the hCG fragment as a therapeutic or preventive tool should be considered.

Rabies is fatal in humans and, after exposure, only correct postexposure treatment as outlined in World Health Organization guidelines can prevent the disease. Analysis of case reports of treatment failures has shown that recommendations have not been followed and that patients presenting risk factors should receive additional care. Known risk factors are delay of more than 24 h in starting postexposure treatment, multiple wounds (especially on head, neck, arm or fingers), incorrect initial wound treatment, immunodepression and non-application of anti-rabies immunoglobulins or serum. We present a case, recently reported from India to Drug Surveillance Behringwerke AG, Marburg, Germany, in which surgery under ketamine anaesthesia might have been an additional risk factor for postexposure treatment failure.
