RESUMO

In this work, 10 chemometric models based on Raman spectroscopy were constructed to predict the physicochemical properties of honey produced in the state of Campeche, Mexico. The properties of honey studied were pH, moisture, total soluble solids (TSS), free acidity, lactonic acidity, total acidity, electrical conductivity, Redox potential, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and ash content. These proprieties were obtained according to the methods described by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Codex Alimentarius, and the International Honey Commission. For the construction of the chemometric models, 189 honey samples were collected and analyzed in triplicate using Raman spectroscopy to generate the matrix data [X], which were correlated with each of the physicochemical properties [Y]. The predictive capacity of each model was determined by cross validation and external validation, using the statistical parameters: standard error of calibration (SEC), standard error of prediction (SEP), coefficient of determination of cross-validation (R2cal), coefficient of determination for external validation (R2val), and Student's t-test. The statistical results indicated that the chemometric models satisfactorily predict the humidity, TSS, free acidity, lactonic acidity, total acidity, and Redox potential. However, the models for electric conductivity and pH presented an acceptable prediction capacity but not adequate to supply the conventional processes, while the models for predicting ash content and HMF were not satisfactory. The developed models represent a low-cost tool to analyze the quality of honey, and contribute significantly to increasing the honey distribution and subsequently the economy of the region.

RESUMO

This paper documents the first report of Sarcocysti s cruzi infection in domesticated cattle (Bos taurus) in the Philippines. Fusiform-shaped microscopic sarcocysts (183-578 microns long and 20-98 microns wide) with distinct septae were found in the skeletal, striated and heart muscle. The sarcocyst wall or parasitophorous vacuolar membrane, 1.37-2.75 microns thick consisted of closely-packed villar protrusions 80-400 nm in dm. Middle and distal segments of VP were bent approximately 90 degrees parallel to the cyst wall surface. The villar core lacked microtubules, and at some points, the distal ends of the VP collectively formed conical tufts. Primary cyst wall had numerous 70-100 nm bubble-like undulations, and the ground substance was 0.25-0.5 micron in thickness. The ultrastructure of S. cruzi cyst wall typifies the Type 7 sarcocyst wall, and bears close similarities with the Philippine and the Vietnam strain of bubaline Sarcocystis levinei.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The bipolar disorder is an important health problem. It presents with severe sintoms, and it tends to cronify. Although lithium has a prophilactic role, it has not controlled the development of severe psychosocial complications. It is necessary to study the psychosocial aspects related to this disorder, to define the areas in which the psychosocial interventions are needed, and the types of psychosocial approaches that can be useful. METHODS: Review of the literature, through MEDLINE database in the last fifteen years, about psychosocial complications of bipolar disorder and its treatment. RESULTS: Many articles emphasize the important psychosocial deficits that appear in patients with bipolar disorder. These deficits concern to all social functions and persist for a long time. The patients are more vulnerable to stressing events, that can have devastating consecuences. The articles report the influence in the evolution and prognosis of this disorder, by the comorbidity of other medical and pschiatric problems. The psychotherapeutical interventions can be of interest to treat the social aspects that lithium fails to control. CONCLUSIONS: Our approach would tend to integrate in the clinical practice both, the biomedical and psychosocial theories. This permits an integral treatment of all the factors implicated in the genesis, maintenance, and consecuences of the mental disorders.
