RESUMO

In the present study we synthesized new methoxy derivatives of trans 2,3-diaryl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, starting from suitable trans 2,3-diaryloxiranes, using regio- and stereoselective nucleophilic oxiranyl ring-opening reactions. The compounds were tested as anti-inflammatories in U937 cells. All compounds showed a significant role in inhibiting the NF-κB pathway and were able to restore normal ROS and NO level upon LPS activation. Moreover, regarding inhibition of ACLY, enantioenriched (50% ee) 7a50 showed more potency than the racemic counterpart 7arac, together with a higher reduction of prostaglandin E2 production, thus suggesting a stereoselective interaction in this pathway.

RESUMO

Background: Health authorities and organizations consider non-medical face masks as an additional passive means to prevent virus diffusion. Communication strategies disseminate information among the population that such masks are essential for mitigating virus diffusion. However, scientific studies are not conclusive in showing the undisputed filtration efficiency of fabric/cloth facial masks (both commercial and homemade). Objectives: This study examines scientific data about the effectiveness of face masks before and during the COVID-19 emergency. Present trends in the making of commercial and homemade fabric/cloth face masks are also examined. Methods: Statistical data of published studies are analyzed and compared. Main considerations and sugge-stions are also extracted and discussed. Current approaches are examined for assessing the characteristics and effectiveness of fabric/cloth commercial and homemade face masks intended for the population. Results: Conflicting data exist as to whether non-medical masks have a protective effect from the spread of respiratory viruses. Both medical masks (MDs) and respiratory personal protection equipment (PPE) show a given effectiveness value. Conclusion: Concerning commercial and homemade fabric/cloth masks, giving general indications on the choice of materials and their assemblage is difficult as it is not possible to assess the effectiveness of the filter media with respect to the kind of multiphase fluid that may be emitted upon breathing, sneezing, or coughing under different environmental conditions. This is particularly important because airflow rate, temperature, humidity, and duration of use will affect the performance of filter media. Moreover, while a mask may have excellent filter media, droplets may leak into the face-piece unless there is an adequate facial seal. In the presence of leaks, any type of mask may actually offer less protection independently of its nominal filtering effìciency.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The health emergency caused by the spread of SARS-COV-2 virus has required the adoption of passive measures against contagion, such as social distancing. The use of filtering masks, of the different types available on the market, such as surgical and facial filtering masks (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3), is also recommended. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper, within the Italian and European regulatory reference framework, is to suggest a rational application of existing methodologies that enable to know and assess the features and/or make a face mask intended to be used by the community. In addition to this, the study aims to provide a correct regulatory framework and useful information for a correct use and disposal of face masks. Another purpose is the assessment of the hygienic, sanitary and regulatory aspects related to the use and disposal of face masks. METHODS: The analysis of filtering masks is based on the review of scientific literature, the state of art of technology and the filtering means/materials available. Reference is made to filtering mechanisms and devices, the testing methods, the technical, manufacturing and performance features, and to the Italian and European regulatory reference framework. Reference is also made to the hygienic, sanitary and regulatory aspects related to the use and disposal of face masks. RESULTS: Surgical masks or, alternatively, filtering masks with a filtration efficiency between 90% and 95% for 3-µm particles, are the most practicable choice with minor contraindications. The reusable type of mask is conceptually superior compared to single-use masks, but cleaning procedures to be followed are quite complex and not always described in a clear way. CONCLUSIONS: The definition of rigorous and repeatable tests on mask filtration capacity, breathability, wearability, duration of use, regeneration, as well as safe disposal methods, are the main way to provide users with correct selection and use criteria. The results must be disclosed and disseminated quickly.

RESUMO

In this study indoor and outdoor air carbonyl compounds concentrations data are processed by means of principal component analysis (PCA). The analysis pointed to the carbonyl compounds sources as well as to their mutual interrelations. A global six sources (components) solution, accounting for the joint variability of the measured variables, was obtained. The existence of a linear function connecting outdoor and indoor components allowed for an exchange model between indoor and outdoor carbonyl compounds to be outlined. The different sources of carbonyl compounds were tentatively identified. Overall, this work demonstrates the presence of a delicate balance between indoor and outdoor carbonyl compounds contamination with the two compartments (indoor and outdoor) engaged in a close relationship.

RESUMO

A study was undertaken at the biggest dental hospital in Italy, the "George Eastman Dental Hospital", in order to assess the dentistry environment as it stands with current equipment and dental practice in use. In order to gain information on the possible presence of chemical pollutants from dentistry activity, a simultaneous consecutive 7-day sampling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the dental chair (dentistry indoor) and at the related vicinity outdoor window (dentistry outdoor) was performed. Volatile organic compounds were identified; cyclohexane, benzene, n-eptane, methylcyclohexane, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, trimethylbenzene and methylhexane were quantitatively determined. As a preliminary result, the dentistry indoor (I(D)) and outdoor (O(D)) volatile organic compounds concentrations ratios are always higher than 1 (I(D)/O(D) > 1), pointing to higher VOCs concentrations in dentistry indoor than in outdoor. It should be noted homes indoor/outdoor concentrations ratios (I(D)/O(H) > 1) are usually higher than 1 as well. For an in-depth study, aimed at assessing the level of VOCs in dentistry setting, instantaneous, hourly, daily, and weekly samplings and a greater number of samples are needed.

RESUMO

The number of cremators is set to grow in Italy owing to current increasing demand for cremation, as a system of burial as well as a system of disposal of non-decomposed human remains resulting from operations of exhumation (as provided by the Circular No. 10 of 31 July of 1998 of the Ministry of Health). Some indications on how town planners need to size up the cremation plant with regard to its capacity to face cremation demand, in order to avoid any hygienic-sanitary inconveniences are given. As a matter of fact, for planning the demand for cremation from Circular No. 10 of 31 July of 1998 it is necessary to assess the decomposition time in burial sites.

RESUMO

With the increase in the application of wastewaters for agricultural purposes, the determination of the concentrations of some elements that can be found in such waters and their temporal behavior are of great interest. In this work, treated and untreated sewage samples were analyzed to determine the concentrations of Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Ca, Mg, and Na concentrations were determined to estimate the sodium adsorbed ratio index. Total residue and setteable solids volume in every samples were also determined. With a view to understanding the effects of rainwater on such parameters and on treatment plant process efficiency, rain data for the period of observations were also collected. Analyses were conducted by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. A Perkin-Elmer Model 460 with a nebulizer-flame system and a Perkin-Elmer Model 5000 with an HGA graphite furnace were used to perform analyses. Principal components analysis was performed to simplify the description of the above 13 parameters and gain a better understanding of their interrelationships. Preliminary results showed that rainwater's impact on the concentrations of the investigated elements cannot be considered as simple dilution. Each parameter follows its own evolution; there is no correlation between treated and untreated sewage.

RESUMO

To evaluate the fertilizing and polluting potential of sewage sludge and to establish whether the latter limits the former or not, sludge must be characterized, application rates chosen, and sludge effects monitored. This work emphasizes that chemical analysis aimed at total metal quantification cannot by itself ensure reliable answers about the agricultural value of sludge. The EEC directives about heavy metals in sewage sludge provide the total content limitation of each element without taking into consideration the respective fractions of metals present in their free state constituting the chemical state most directly related to sanitary risk. To evaluate the role of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in a such disposal system, a scheme is proposed.
