Lucilia cuprina is a vector of important diseases in humans and animals that causes myiasis in sheep, leading to enormous damage to the sheep sector. Chemical products are used to control these flies; however, there are reports of resistance in addition to these products causing toxicity to the environment, humans, and animals, so alternative controls have been studied to reduce these impacts. Pleurotus spp. are basidiomycete fungi and present bioactive compounds with medicinal properties. Due to the potential use of fungi to control Diptera, this study aimed to verify the activity of Pleurotus florida, P. ostreatus, and P. djamor in the control of larvae and adults of L. cuprina, as well as the effects of aqueous extracts of the fungi P. ostreatus, P. djamor, and P. florida on larvae and adults of L. cuprina. The aqueous extract from P. florida was the only one that showed larvicidal activity against L. cuprina, with a half-maximal effective concentration of 11.42 mg/mL. In the test with adult stages, 30 insects were used for each solution concentration, sprinkled with 1 mL of the solution. All aqueous extracts showed adulticidal activity at all concentrations, P. ostreatus showing the best results, with adult mortality ranging from 75.86 to 100%. Our results demonstrated an important larvicidal effect of P. florida and an adulticidal effect of all AE, with emphasis on P. ostreatus.

Cyathostomins are common intestinal nematodes that parasitize horses and can affect animal health and welfare. Alternative treatments are essential for sustainable parasite control, reducing the indiscriminate use of anthelmintics and their impacts on the environment, animals, and humans. Pleurotus spp. are edible medicinal mushrooms that possess several therapeutic properties, including antiparasitic and nematocidal activities. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and nematocidal activity of aqueous extracts of three oyster species (P. florida, P. ostreatus, and P. djamor) on cyathostomine eggs in vitro. P. florida showed the highest activity against test organisms, inhibiting the hatching of eggs in up to 92.19% at the highest concentration (10%) of aqueous extract, with a mean lethal concentration (LC50) of 2.13%. In the aqueous extracts of P. ostreatus and P. djamor, nematocidal activity was reduced, inhibiting egg hatching by 55.46% (LC50, 7.44%) and 23.67%, respectively, at a concentration of 10%. P. florida showed higher antioxidant activity than that of the other species tested. Thus, P. florida may be considered a potential alternative for biological control in in vivo experiments with cyathostomins.

The treatment of cutaneous wounds is part of the veterinary routine from initial scientific reports due to being regularly present condition. Currently, several types of treatments are available to accelerate the healing process. This report presents the case of a dog with multiple lesions in the thoracic limbs resulting from a car accident, who underwent larval therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The animal was a 2-year-old female mixed breed dog presenting severe skin degloving, fracture in the left thoracic limb (LTL), with abrasion lesions and dislocation in the right thoracic limb (RTL). The animal underwent multiple modality therapies, such as HBOT sessions associated with larval therapy; even after the LTL presented gangrene, this treatment resulted in optimal viability of the non-necrotic tissue adjacent to the gangrene. Due to chronic pain unresponsive to drug control and the presence of a fracture at a location where a possible exoprosthesis was supposed to be fixed, the LTL ended up being amputated. There are several reports of the use of HBOT or larval therapy in traumatized limbs; however, the combination of both therapies has not been previously described in the veterinary literature. Thus, we demonstrate through this report that it was possible to quickly recover the animal with good wound resolution through tissue oxygenation and a healthy granulation bed, both provided by the therapeutic combination.

The insecticidal activity of Myristica fragrans (Houtt) essential seed oil, (Nutmeg) was evaluated against Musca domestica (Linnaeus) and Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann); both important infectious pathogenic disease vectors. The oil was extracted by distillation, and 21 components were identified during chemical analysis; principally ß-pinene (26%), α-pinene (10.5%), Sabinene (9.1%) and γ-terpinen (8.5%). Insecticidal properties were identified through larvicide and adulticide tests. Using the immersion method, the oil at 5% was found to be very effective (90 ± 1%) against M. domestica larvae. The results for adulticide activity varied by fly species, dosage, time, and method of exposure. Topical application (on the insect thorax) was more toxic to C. albiceps, where the lethal concentration at 50% (LC50) was 2.02 ± 0.56, and 8.57 ± 2.41 for the common flies. When the insects were exposed to oil impregnated paper, the results were similar for M. domestica and C. albiceps adults with respective LC50 values of 2.74 ± 0.24, and 3.65 ± 0.48. Thus, the results demonstrated that M. fragrans oil presents insecticidal activity and can be used for control of Musca domestica and Chrysomya albiceps.

The aims of this study were to evaluate if the use of copper oxide wire particles, isolated or in association with closantel, in lambs infected with Haemonchus contortus enhances the anthelmintic efficacy of closantel, as well as to evaluate the effects of treatment in hepatic energy metabolism, inflammatory markers and hematological and biochemical tests. The lambs were randomly divided into five groups (6 animals each), as follows: uninfected animals (Control); animals infected with H. contortus (HC); infected and treated with closantel (HC + CL); infected and treated with copper oxide wire particles (HC + Cu); and infected and treated with closantel plus copper oxide wire particles (HC + CL + Cu). The animals of infected groups were infected orally with H. contortus (5,000 L3 -larvae) and on day 14 post infection (p.i) the treatments were initiated. The egg per gram of feces (EPG), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), myeloperoxidase (MPO), adenylate kinase (AK) and pyruvate kinase (PK) activities and hematological and biochemical tests were evaluated. Treatments with copper oxide (isolated and associated) were able to reduce the EPG count on days 28, 35, 42 and 49 p.i when compared to HC group, while closantel was able to reduce EPG only from day 35 p.i. Moreover, treatment with closantel (isolated or associated) was able to prevent the inhibition of hepatic AK and PK activities caused by H. contortus infection, which may contribute to efficient intracellular energetic communication in order to maintain the balance between cellular ATP consumption and production. Butyrylcholinesterase and MPO activities were higher in infected lambs compared to uninfected, while treated groups showed lower enzymatic activity compared to the group HC. The use of all therapeutic protocols was able to reduce the EPG count. Based on these evidences, the use of copper oxide plus closantel may be considered an alternative to treat lambs infected by H. contortus.

Essential oils are considered an alternative for replacement of conventional insecticides that have provoked an increasing number of resistant species and damages to health. The objective of this work was to investigate the insecticidal activity of Lavandula dentata L. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae) oil against the species Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) and Chrysomya albiceps Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Extraction of the essential oil from the aerial parts of the plant was carried out using hydro-distillation. Its principal compounds (1,8-cineol, camphor, and linalool oxide) were identified. Insecticidal activity was determined by evaluating adulticidal effect using topical application methods and exposure to impregnated paper; larvicidal effect was determined using immersion method. The essential oil presented toxicity in M. domestica and C. albiceps adults; the lethal concentration values (LC50) in the superficial application method were respectively 3.13 ± 0.64 and 1.39 ± 0.19% live weight (l/v). Toxicity was also found in the oil impregnated paper exposure test; the LC50 results for M. domestica and C. albiceps were respectively 4.15 ± 0.64 and 5.14 ± 0.81%. Larvicidal effect was observed on third stage M. domestica larvae when exposed to an oil concentration of 2.5% (m/v). In addition, the oil was evaluated for cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and genotoxicity in human cells, and the in vitro safety of this oil in human cells was verified. Thus, L. dentata oil presented insecticidal activity in M. domestica and C. albiceps and can be used as an alternative for control of these dipterans.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of specific avian polyclonal antibodies (IgY) against Trypanosoma cruzi and their interaction with ecto-enzymes of the purinergic system (NTPDase and adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities) in splenic lymphocytes. For this, mice were divided into six groups: three non-infected (A, B, and C) and three infected (D, E, and F). The groups A and D were composed by negative and positive controls, respectively; while the groups B and E were treated prophylactically with IgY (50 mg/kg), and the groups C and F were treated therapeutically with IgY (50 mg/kg). Treatment with IgY reduced parasitemia on day 6 post-infection (PI) compared to the infected control group, but it was similar on day 8 PI. Moreover, infected and treated animals (the groups E and F) did not show neither amastigotes in the cardiac tissue nor cardiac lesions when compared to the positive control group (the group D). The E-NTPDase (ATP and ADP as substrate) and ADA activities in splenic lymphocytes increased significantly in the positive control group (the group D) compared to the negative control group (the group A). The therapeutic treatment of IgY (the group F) was able to prevent the increase of E-NTPDase and E-ADA activities compared to the positive control group (the group D), but this finding was not observed in animals that received the prophylactic treatment (the group E). The therapeutic treatment of IgY may be considered an interesting approach to improve the immune response of mice experimentally infected by T. cruzi.
