RESUMO
In this work, we will show that the concept of nematic order parameter and a generalization of the concept of optical indicatrix, largely used in optics of anisotropic crystals, can be joined to give a new geometrical representation to the anisotropies found in lyotropic liquid crystals. Our theoretical approach will be illustrated using refractive index data of reentrant isotropic-calamitic (discotic) nematic phase transitions of potassium laurate, decanol, and heavy water mixtures.
RESUMO
Collapsing glomerulopathy is a severe form of glomerular injury, closely associated with HIV infection, characterized by the collapsing feature of glomerular damage with frequent tubulointerstitial involvement and rapid progression to terminal renal failure. The etiopathogenesis in non-HIV infected patients remains obscure. We reported a patient whose diagnosis of collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was done simultaneously and described the diseases characteristics suggesting that SLE could be an etiologic factor for the induction of this glomerulopathy, clinical evolution and treatment.

In this work experimental and theoretical results will be used to show that under convenient conditions; appropriated geometry, well chosen boundary conditions, and suitable external fields, the elastic and dynamic behavior of a sample of a biaxial nematic liquid crystal can become similar to the one observed on usual uniaxial nematic liquid crystals. It is shown that this result can be used to determine the values of some combinations of the rheologic parameters of the biaxial phase.
