RESUMO

Reduced serum magnesium concentrations in women with breast cancer compromises one of the antioxidant defense system involved in the carcinogenesis process. To evaluate parameters of magnesium, the enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, and its relation with oxidative stress markers in women with breast cancer. A case-control study was conducted, involving 60 women in the age range between 29 and 65 years, divided into two groups: women with breast cancer (n = 30) and women without breast cancer (n = 30). Plasma; ionized, erythrocytic, and urinary magnesium intake; plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were evaluated. The mean value of the amount of dietary magnesium was below the recommended level in both groups studied, with no statistical difference (p > 0.05). Plasma, ionized, and erythrocyte magnesium concentrations of women with breast cancer were reduced in relation to the control group (p < 0.0001) and inadequate according to the reference values. Urinary excretion was high, with a significant difference between groups (p < 0.0001). The mean concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances was high in the study participants, with no significant statistical difference between the groups (p > 0.05). The mean values of superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were adequate, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Women with breast cancer have impaired magnesium homeostasis, characterized by its reduction in diet, plasma, and erythrocytes and its increase in urine.

RESUMO

Physical exercise can bring benefits to the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal tract. However, little is known about the adequate exercise intensity and how exercise responses are affects by sexual differences. AIMS: To evaluate the effect of an acute treadmill exercise session at ~ 75% of HRmáx on hemodynamic parameters and the gastric compliance of men and women. METHODS: The study included 22 men and women aged 18 to 29 years, physically active. The exercise consisted of a treadmill session at 75% of HRmáx. We monitored blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). During the drink test, volunteers were asked to ingest 15mL of chocolate in 1min intervals, marking their satiety on a graphical scale combining verbal descriptors. RESULTS: There was a significant increase of hemodynamic parameters for both sexes after the exercise session (p <0.05). Exercise was also able to increase total ingested volume, time of ingestion and calories ingested (p < 0.05). Concerning the drink test, no influence of the exercise session on satiety scores was observed in the groups studied (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Acute moderate exercise promoted significant increase in hemodynamic parameters and gastric compliance in subjects of both sexes. However, there was no effect on the satiety scores and the volume ingested at each score

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the relation between dietary intake of vitamin D and insulin resistance in obese and nonobese women. This cross-sectional study included 93 women, aged between 20 and 50 years, who were subdivided into two groups: the obese group (n = 46) and the agematched control group (n = 47). Vitamin D and calcium intake was monitored using 3-day food records and Dietpro software version 5.1. Measurements of serum glucose and serum insulin were based on an enzymatic colorimetric method and a chemiluminescence assay, respectively. Insulin resistance was assessed by means of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The median values of vitamin D content in the diet were found to be lower than those recommended, although there was a significant difference between groups (p < 0.001). The mean values of calcium intake were found to be above the recommendations, although there was no significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). The values of serum glucose, serum insulin, and HOMA-IR were higher in obese women than in the control group. The correlation analysis indicated that the association between the dietary intake of vitamin D and insulin resistance was not significant. The results of this study indicate that dietary vitamin D does not influence parameters of glycemic control in obese women (AU)
