RESUMO

This study assessed qualitative and quantitative leukocyte evaluation as potential broiler chicken welfare indicators, contributing to the limited literature on white blood cell (WBC) morphology as a diagnostic tool for welfare. Broiler chicken welfare within four poultry houses (PH) 1 to 4, each on a different farm, was assessed using on-field indicators of affective states and health, and WBC morphology was examined. Affective states were evaluated using the Qualitative Behavior Assessment (QBA), with 25 behavioral expressions scored on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and grouped into two categories. Health indicators included assessments of lameness, footpad dermatitis, dermatitis on the breast and abdominal areas, hock burn, and feather cleaning. Blood samples were collected, differential leukocyte counts were performed, and a cell score was created for the recognition, classification, and interpretation of morphologic diversity of heterophils and lymphocytes. The heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H/L) was also determined. Descriptive statistics and generalized linear models for binomial responses were used to analyze the results. PH4 differed from the other farms, showing a higher frequency of birds within QBA group 1 ('Attentive'to 'Desperate'), while birds in PH1, PH2, and PH3 were more frequent in QBA group 2 ('Relaxed' to 'Positively occupied'). Elevated proportions of heterophils in birds from PH4 (0.61, CI95%: 0.58; 0.64) and PH3 (0.60, CI95%: 0.57; 0.63) suggested higher stress levels and inflammatory responses. Birds in PH2 and PH4 exhibited higher frequencies of health issues such as dermatitis and lameness, and higher proportions of abnormalities in WBC number and morphology. PH3 and PH4 exhibited higher H/L ratios of 3.03 and 2.58, respectively, consistent with the on-field health and behavioral indicators. Blood samples from birds in PH2 and PH4 showed a proportion of 90% toxic change in heterophils, while in PH1 and PH3 it was 70%, indicating high levels of abnormal WBC morphology across all PHs. The findings emphasize the multifactorial nature of welfare impairments, including environmental conditions, health, and affective states. This highlights the need for indicators that reflect multiple welfare impacts, such as WBC counts and morphological alterations, which can serve as powerful tools in the complex task of assessing animal welfare.

Information on the knowledge and ways of using food and medicinal plants by traditional populations, family farmers and Brazilian native population in the Amazon is essential to guarantee the food sovereignty of these groups. This study was conducted using semi-structured interviews applied to local respondents. A total of 269 species of both non-conventional food plants and medicinal plants were identified, distributed in 83 botanical families and 198 genera. The Arecaceae and Lamiaceae families had the highest species richness (11 and 7, respectively). The Shannon-Wiener (H') and Pielou (J') diversity indices were considered high (5.02 and 0.9, respectively) when compared to other ethnobotanical works. In the environment in which these families are found, these species become the only food and medicinal resources available.


La información sobre los saberes y formas de uso de las plantas alimenticias y medicinales por parte de las poblaciones tradicionales, agricultores familiares e indígenas brasileños en la Amazonía es fundamental para garantizar la soberanía alimentaria de estos grupos. Este estudio se realizó utilizando entrevistas semiestructuradas aplicadas a encuestados locales. Se identificaron un total de 269 especies tanto de plantas alimenticiasno convencionales como de plantas medicinales, distribuidas en 83 familias botánicas y 198 géneros. Las familias Arecaceae y Lamiaceae tuvieron la mayor riqueza de especies (11 y 7, respectivamente). Los índices de diversidad de Shannon-Wiener (H') y Pielou (J') fueron considerados altos (5,02 y 0,9, respectivamente) en comparación con otros trabajos etnobotánicos. En el ambiente en que se encuentran estas familias, estas especies se convierten en los únicos recursos alimenticios y medicinales disponibles.

In response to the rapid emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes (ARGs), integrated surveillance systems are needed to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the One Health Era. Wastewater analyses enable biomarker monitoring at the sewershed level, offering timely insights into pathogen circulation and ARB/ARGs trends originating from different compartments. During two consecutive epidemic waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal, taxonomic and functional composition of raw urban wastewater from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) representing one million in equivalent population, located in the main urban areas of the country, were profiled by shotgun metagenomics. Hospital wastewater from two central hospitals located in the WWTPs catchment areas were also sequenced. The resistome and virulome were profiled using metagenomic assemblies without taxonomic constraint, and then specifically characterized for ESKAPE pathogens. Urban and hospital wastewater exhibited specific microbiota signatures, Pseudomonadota dominated in the first and Bacteroidota in the latter. Correlation network analyses highlighted 85 (out of top 100) genera co-occurring across samples. The most frequent ARGs were classified in the multidrug, tetracyclines, and Macrolides, Lincosamides, Streptogramins (MLS) classes. Links established between AMR determinants and bacterial hosts evidenced that the diversity and abundance of ARGs is not restricted to ESKAPE, being also highly predominant among emergent enteropathogens, like Aeromonas and Aliarcobacter, or in the iron (II) oxidizer Acidovorax. The Aliarcobacter genus accumulated high abundance of sulphonamides and polymyxins ARGs, while Acinetobacter and Aeromonas hosted the highest abundance of ARGs against beta-lactams. Other bacteria (e.g. Clostridioides, Francisella, Vibrio cholerae) and genes (e.g. vanA-type vancomycin resistance) of public health interest were detected, with targeted monitoring efforts being needed to establish informative baseline data. Altogether, results highlight that wastewater monitoring is a valuable component of pathogen and AMR surveillance in healthy populations, providing a community-representative snapshot of public health trends beyond priority pathogens.

Monitoring the herd during supplementation is essential to understanding animals' ingestive activities, making decisions when choosing the supplement parameters, and correctly managing the livestock and agriculture processes. Programmable Automatic Feeders (PAFs) are important tools that support stakeholders in the treatment process, decreasing the time and cost compared to traditional supplementation methods. This paper presents a dataset that consists of data acquired from a supplementation experiment using a PAF with a Nelore herd in a paddock of 16 ha with brachiaria Decumbens forage. The experiment was performed in the Midwest region of Brazil (20°26'37.7″S 54°50'58.5″W) and according to the Köppen climate classification system, the region has a tropical wet and dry climate (Aw). This climate type is typically associated with high temperatures throughout the year. The herd had free access to water and the forage. The PAF supplemented the herd three times a day and collected data such as the frequency and time spent in the feeder of each animal. The experiment data started in December 2022 up to October 2023. The animals were weighed every 13-28 days, and the animals' Average Daily Gain (ADG) was registered. In addition, spectral and weather parameters were acquired via geoprocessing and meteorological (Application Programming Interfaces - APIs). This dataset can support stakeholders in understanding the bovines' collective behaviour at the supplementation process and designing and developing machine-learning models to estimate the quantity of supplementation ingested by the herd.

MOTIVATION: Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are the most widely used vehicles for mRNA vaccine delivery. The structure of the lipids composing the LNPs can have a major impact on the effectiveness of the mRNA payload. Several properties should be optimized to improve delivery and expression including biodegradability, synthetic accessibility, and transfection efficiency. RESULTS: To optimize LNPs, we developed and tested models that enable the virtual screening of LNPs with high transfection efficiency. Our best method uses the lipid Simplified Molecular-Input Line-Entry System (SMILES) as inputs to a large language model. Large language model-generated embeddings are then used by a downstream gradient-boosting classifier. As we show, our method can more accurately predict lipid properties, which could lead to higher efficiency and reduced experimental time and costs. Two cohorts of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) larvae were sampled in 2017 and 2018 during the peak of spawning in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). We examined environmental variables, daily growth, otolith biometry and stable isotopes and found that the GOM18 cohort grew at faster rates, with larger and wider otoliths. Inter and intra-population analyses (deficient vs. optimal growth groups) were carried out for pre- and post-flexion developmental stages to determine maternal and trophodynamic influences on larval growth variability based on larval isotopic signatures, trophic niche sizes and their overlaps. For the pre-flexion stages in both years, the optimal growth groups had significantly lower δ15N, implying a direct relationship between growth potential and maternal inheritance. Optimal growth groups and stages for both years showed lower C:N ratios, reflecting a greater energy investment in growth. The results of this study illustrate the interannual transgenerational trophic plasticity of a spawning stock and its linkages to growth potential of their offsprings in the GOM.

OBJECTIVE: The present study probes into the association between children's fundamental movement skills (FMS) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during weekdays and weekends. METHODS: This cross-sectional sample included 1014 children aged 6-10 years from the REACT project. Physical activity was assessed with accelerometry, and five FMS (stationary dribble, kick, catch, overhand throw, and underhand roll) were assessed with the digital platform Meu Educativo®. Three groups were formed based on the frequency of FMS that each child mastered: group 1 (wizard level in four or five FMS); group 2 (wizard level in two or three FMS); and group 3 (wizard level in at most one skill). Multilevel models were used to analyze the data treating children (level-1) nested within schools (level-2). RESULTS: Compared to group 1, groups 2 (-12.9 ± 2.3 min day-1) and 3 (-23.9 ± 2.4 min day-1) were less physically active during weekdays and weekends (group 2: -14.7 ± 2.7 min day-1 and group 3: -22.4 ± 2.9 min day-1), independent of age and sex. There was a decline in MVPA during the weekend. Further, on average, boys were more active than girls, and with increasing age, children were less active. CONCLUSION: On average, children with higher FMS levels are generally more physically active than their peers with lower FMS levels. Even though MVPA tends to decline on weekends, FMS proficiency is a significant factor in maintaining 60 min of MVPA on weekends.

The increasing lifespan of women and their extended time spent in menopause pose significant challenges for health care systems, primarily due to the impacts of postmenopausal estrogen deficiency and aging on health. Menopause's onset is linked to a heightened prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Diet is particularly relevant during menopause given its impact on quality of life and longevity and its modifiability. Because the Mediterranean diet is currently regarded as one of the healthiest dietary models in the world, the aim of this systematic review was to assess current evidence regarding the effectiveness of studies on the Mediterranean diet as an intervention for menopausal women. A systematic review of intervention-based studies involving the Mediterranean diet among menopausal women was performed in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science. The results of seven that met the inclusion criteria suggests that adherence to the Mediterranean diet can have beneficial impacts on menopausal women's health, including reductions in weight, blood pressure, blood ω6: ω3 ratio, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL levels. Those results seem to be relevant for public health interventions aimed at improving menopausal women's quality of life.

Estimating pasture parameters is essential for decision-making in the management of livestock and agriculture. Despite that, the time-consuming acquisition of outdoor forage samples and the high cost of laboratory analysis make it infeasible to predict parameters of quality and quantity forage recurrently and with great accuracy. Previous work has shown that multispectral and weather data have correlation with forage parameters, enabling the design of supervised machine learning models to predict forage conditions. Nevertheless, datasets with pasture yield and nutritional parameters, remote sensing and weather information are scarce and rarely available, limiting the design of prediction models. This paper presents a dataset with more than 300 samples of pasture laboratory analyses collected over nearly twelve months from two paddocks. Latitude and longitude coordinates were collected for each sample using GPS coordinates, and this data helped acquire multispectral band signals and eight vegetation index values extracted from Google Earth Engine (Sentinel-2 satellite) for each pixel of each sample. Furthermore, the dataset has weather data from APIs and a meteorological station. These data can also motivate new studies that aim determine pasture behaviour, joining this dataset with larger datasets that have similar information.

The aim of this study was to investigate the measures of displacement, time and velocity of hyoid bone movement in female thyroidectomy patients. Fifty-eight ultrasound videos of 29 women during swallowing were analyzed. The sample was divided into experimental group (EG), composed of 12 women following total or partial thyroidectomy; and control group (CG) of 17 healthy women. The kinematic measures of displacement, time and velocity of hyoid bone displacement were tracked during swallowing of 10 ml of liquid (water) and 10 ml of thickened liquid (honey) in both groups for comparisons. Additional analysis included bolus consistency effect and relationship with clinical characteristics. Ultrasound videos were analyzed according to a standardized protocol using ImageJ software. Displacement, time and velocity of hyoid movement during swallowing of 10 ml of liquid or thickened liquid were not statistically different between female thyroidectomy patients and healthy women. There is no bolus consistency effect on kinematic measures in both groups, but among thyroidectomy patients, velocity of hyoid bone movement is significantly faster in those with swallowing complaints.

This study delves into the photoluminescent characteristics of solid-state hybrid carbon dots/LAPONITE® (CDLP). These hybrid materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method with a precise pH control set at 8.5. The LAPONITE® structure remains intact without structural collapse, and we detected the possible deposition of carbon dots (CDs) aggregates on the clay mineral's edges. The use of different concentrations of citric acid (10-, 6-, 2- and 1-times weight/weight of LAPONITE® mass, maintaining the 1 : 1 molar ratio with ethylenediamine) during synthesis results in different CDs concentrations in CDLP-A (low precursors concentration) and CDLP-D (high concentration) with an amorphous structure and average size around 2.8-3.0 nm. The CDLP displayed visible photoluminescence emission in aqueous and powder, which the last underwent quenching according to lifetimes and quantum yield measurements. Low-temperature measurements revealed an enhancement of the non-radiative pathways induced by aggregation. Energy transfer modelling based on Förster-Dexter suggests an approximate mean distance of 9.5 nm between clusters of CDs.

Introduction: Gliomas are the most common primary tumors of the central nervous system. The majority are formed by glioblastomas, with high degrees of proliferation and invasion, with biological heterogeneity and little response to current treatments. Immunotherapy and genetherapy have not shown efficacy and, therefore, it is necessary to seek knowledge of new molecules and genes involved in their carcinogenesis. Objectives: To evaluate whether the alpha 5 gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABRA5) is a potential therapeutic target or biomarker for gliomas of different subgroups, and the correlation between GABRA5 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels and overall survival. Methods: Integrative review carried out on virtual platforms in Portuguese and English, carried out using descriptors related to the topic, described in DeCS as "glioma, central nervous system, glioblastoma, GABA, GABRA5" with AND or OR search, initially considering the title and/or summary. Afterwards, in those that were most related to the topic, the texts were read in full. Results: 36 articles were included. Conclusion: GABRA5 mRNA levels in glioma samples from all histological subgroups are lower compared to control. No correlation was observed between GABRA5 mRNA levels and overall survival in the evaluated subgroups.


Introdução: Gliomas são os tumores primários mais comuns do sistema nervoso central e a maioria é formada por glioblastomas, com graus elevados de proliferação e invasão, com heterogeneidade biológica e pouca resposta aos tratamentos atuais. Imunoterapia e geneterapia não têm mostrado eficácia e, por isso, é necessário buscar conhecimento de novas moléculas e genes envolvidos na sua carcinogênese. Objetivos: Avaliar se o receptor do ácido gama-aminobutírico alfa 5 (GABRA5) é potencial alvo terapêutico ou biomarcador para gliomas de diferentes subgrupos, e a correlação entre os níveis de ácido ribonucleico mensageiro (mRNA) de GABRA5 com a sobrevida global. Métodos: Revisão integrativa feita em plataformas virtuais, em português e inglês, realizada por descritores relacionados ao tema, descritos no DeCS como "glioma, sistema nervoso central, glioblastoma" com busca AND ou OR, considerando-se inicialmente o título e/ou resumo. Após, naqueles que tinham maior relação ao tema, foi realizada a leitura na íntegra dos textos. Resultados: Foram incluídos 36 artigos. Conclusão: Os níveis de mRNA de GABRA5 em amostras de gliomas de todos os subgrupos histológicos são menores, em comparação ao controle. Não foi observada correlação entre os níveis de mRNA de GABRA5 com a sobrevida global dos subgrupos avaliados.

Although lung cancer (LC) is one of the most common and lethal tumors, only 15% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage. Smoking is still responsible for more than 85% of cases. Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduces LC-related mortality by 20%, and that reduction reaches 38% when LCS by LDCT is combined with smoking cessation. In the last decade, a number of countries have adopted population-based LCS as a public health recommendation. Albeit still incipient, discussion on this topic in Brazil is becoming increasingly broad and necessary. With the aim of increasing knowledge and stimulating debate on LCS, the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Brazilian Thoracic Association, and the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging convened a panel of experts to prepare recommendations for LCS in Brazil. The recommendations presented here were based on a narrative review of the literature, with an emphasis on large population-based studies, systematic reviews, and the recommendations of international guidelines, and were developed after extensive discussion by the panel of experts. The following topics were reviewed: reasons for screening; general considerations about smoking; epidemiology of LC; eligibility criteria; incidental findings; granulomatous lesions; probabilistic models; minimum requirements for LDCT; volumetric acquisition; risks of screening; minimum structure and role of the multidisciplinary team; practice according to the Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System; costs versus benefits of screening; and future perspectives for LCS.

INTRODUCTION: The Categories of Auditory Performance II (CAP-II) scale and the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Audit Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) are simple and quick questionnaires that allow assessment of the auditory performance of children with cochlear implant (CI). The aim of this study was to translate, adapt and validate the European Portuguese version of the CAP-II and IT-MAIS scales. METHODS: A total of 85 participants completed the European Portuguese version of the CAP-II and IT-MAIS questionnaires, of which 45 were parents of children with pediatric cochlear implants (9.84 ± 4.22 years) and another 40 were parents of children with normal hearing (8.35 ± 3.56 years). Inter-rater reproducibility, test-retest reproducibility, comparison of study group versus control group results, internal consistency and correlation of the new scales were evaluated. RESULTS: The CAP-II and IT-MAIS scales showed high reliability and reproducibility, respectively, with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.979 (p < 0.001) and a Spearman's correlation of 0.924 for the CAP-II scale, and an ICC of 0.932 (p < 0.001) and Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.732 for the IT-MAIS scale. The IT-MAIS and CAP-II versions showed strong internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient value of 0.887 for the CAP-II scale and Spearman's positive correlation of 0.677 for the IT-MAIS scale, respectively) and allowed for the differentiation between children with normal hearing and post-implantation children (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001 respectively for each of the scales). There was no association between parental education and the results on the scales (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrated that the European Portuguese version of these scales is a valid and reliable tool for assessing auditory performance in European Portuguese-speaking children with hearing loss.


Introdução: As escalas Categories of Auditory Performance II (CAP-II) e Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) são questionários simples e de rápida aplicação que permitem avaliar o desempenho auditivo de crianças com implante coclear (IC). O objetivo deste estudo foi a tradução, adaptação e validação da versão em português europeu das escalas CAP-II e IT-MAIS. Métodos: Um total de 85 participantes completaram a versão em português europeu dos questionários CAP-II e IT-MAIS, dos quais 45 eram pais de crianças com IC pediátrico (9,84 ± 4,22 anos) e outros 40 eram pais de crianças com audição normal (8,35 ± 3,56 anos). Foi avaliada a reprodutibilidade entre avaliadores, a reprodutibilidade teste-reteste, a comparação dos resultados do grupo de estudo versus grupo de controlo, a consistência interna e a correlação das novas escalas. Resultados: As escalas CAP-II e IT-MAIS apresentaram uma elevada confiabilidade e reprodutibilidade, respetivamente com coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) de 0,979 (p < 0,001) e correlação de Spearman de 0,924 para a escala CAP-II, e ICC de 0,932 (p < 0,001) e coeficiente de correlação de Spearman de 0,732 para a escala IT-MAIS. As versões do IT-MAIS e do CAP-II apresentaram uma forte consistência interna (valor do coeficiente α de Cronbach de 0,887 para a escala CAP-II e correlação positiva de Spearman de 0,677 para a escala IT-MAIS, respetivamente) e permitem diferenciar entre crianças com audição normal e crianças pós-implantação (p = 0,001 e p < 0,001 respetivamente para cada uma das escalas). Não se verificou existir associação estatisticamente significativa entre a escolaridade e o resultado nas escalas (p > 0,05). As the COVID-19 pandemic reached its peak, many countries implemented genomic surveillance systems to track the evolution and transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Transition from the pandemic to the endemic phase prioritized alternative testing strategies to maintain effective epidemic surveillance at the population level, with less intensive sequencing efforts. One such promising approach was Wastewater-Based Surveillance (WBS), which offers non-invasive, cost-effective means for analysing virus trends at the sewershed level. From 2020 onwards, wastewater has been recognized as an instrumental source of information for public health, with national and international authorities exploring options to implement national wastewater surveillance systems and increasingly relying on WBS as early warning of potential pathogen outbreaks. In Portugal, several pioneer projects joined the academia, water utilities and Public Administration around WBS. To validate WBS as an effective genomic surveillance strategy, it is crucial to collect long term performance data. In this work, we present one year of systematic SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance in Portugal, representing 35 % of the mainland population. We employed two complementary methods for lineage determination - allelic discrimination by RT-PCR and S-gene sequencing. This combination allowed us to monitor variant evolution in near-real-time and identify low-frequency mutations. Over the course of this year-long study, spanning from May 2022 to April 2023, we successfully tracked the dominant Omicron sub-lineages, their progression and evolution, which aligned with concurrent clinical surveillance data. Our results underscore the effectiveness of WBS as a tracking system for virus variants, with the ability to unveil mutations undetected via massive sequencing of clinical samples from Portugal, demonstrating the ability of WBS to uncover new mutations and detect rare genetic variants. Our findings emphasize that knowledge of the genetic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 at the population level can be extended far beyond via the combination of routine clinical genomic surveillance with wastewater sequencing and genotyping.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implant surgery is guided by principles of atraumatic insertion as to protect the inner ear. Previous studies suggest the potential benefit of steroids in patients undergoing cochlear implantation (CI), although the optimal route of administration has yet to be determined. We aim to systematically review the human studies of hearing and vestibular function preservation in patients undergoing CI receiving perioperative steroids and to discuss their role. DATA SOURCES: Search performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL databases in December 2023. REVIEW METHODS: Studies comparing several methods of steroid delivery and conventional management for patients undergoing CI were identified. Primary outcomes included hearing and vestibular function preservation. Secondary outcomes included reported adverse events, routes of steroid administration, and the presence of a control group without steroid administration. RESULTS: A total of 15 studies (N = 659) met inclusion criteria. Methodology, doses, route of steroid administration, and follow-up duration differed between most studies. Audiometric, vestibular, and hearing preservation (HP) results were inconsistent. In 12 studies, perioperative steroids were associated with either increased HP or vestibular function preservation. Only two studies reported adverse events related to oral corticosteroid therapy. CONCLUSIONS: There is a tendency for perioperative steroids to have a positive impact, at least in the short term, on hearing and vestibular function preservation in CI. Topical corticosteroid therapy appears to have a superior risk-benefit profile. There is a need for future carefully designed randomized controlled trials to determine the ideal route of steroid administration and its real impact in the long term. Cardiac surgery patients are highly prone to severe complications post-discharge. Close follow-up through remote patient monitoring can help detect adverse outcomes earlier or prevent them, closing the gap between hospital and home care. However, equipment is limited due to economic and human resource constraints. This issue raises the need for efficient risk estimation to provide clinicians with insights into the potential benefit of remote monitoring for each patient. Standard models, such as the EuroSCORE, predict the mortality risk before the surgery. While these are used and validated in real settings, the models lack information collected during or following the surgery, determinant to predict adverse outcomes occurring further in the future. This paper proposes a Clinical Decision Support System based on Machine Learning to estimate the risk of severe complications within 90 days following cardiothoracic surgery discharge, an innovative objective underexplored in the literature. Health records from a cardiothoracic surgery department regarding 5 045 patients (60.8% male) collected throughout ten years were used to train predictive models. Clinicians' insights contributed to improving data preparation and extending traditional pipeline optimization techniques, addressing medical Artificial Intelligence requirements. Two separate test sets were used to evaluate the generalizability, one derived from a patient-grouped 70/30 split and another including all surgeries from the last available year. The achieved Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve on these test sets was 69.5% and 65.3%, respectively. Also, additional testing was implemented to simulate a real-world use case considering the weekly distribution of remote patient monitoring resources post-discharge. Compared to the random resource allocation, the selection of patients with respect to the outputs of the proposed model was proven beneficial, as it led to a higher number of high-risk patients receiving remote monitoring equipment.
