The evidence on the role of diets in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was limited. The aim of this study was to assess the potential effects of high-fat high-fructose (HFHF), high-fat, and Western diets on the levels of SCFA. A research experiment employing a post-test-only control group design was carried out from January to April 2022. A total of 27 rats were randomly allocated to each study group. SCFA was measured two weeks after diet administration. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to analyze the differences among groups, and the effect estimate of each group was analyzed using post hoc Tukey. The concentrations of SCFAs post HFHF diets were recorded as follows: acetic acid at 54.60±10.58 mmol/g, propionic acid at 28.03±8.81 mmol/g, and butyric acid at 4.23±1.68 mmol/g. Following the high-fat diet, acetic acid measured 61.85±14.25 mmol/gr, propionic acid measured 25.19±5.55 mmol/gr, and butyric acid measured 6.10±2.93 mmol/gr. After the administration of Western diet, the levels of SCFA were 68.18±25.73, 29.69±12.76, and 7.48±5.51 mmol/g for acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid, respectively. The level of butyric acid was significantly lower in HFHF diet group compared to the normal diet (mean difference (MD) 6.34; 95%CI: 0.61, 12.04; p=0.026). The levels of acetic acid (p=0.419) and propionic acid (p=0.316) were not statistically different among diet types (HFHF, high-fat, and Western diet). In conclusion, HFHF diet is associated with a lower level of butyric acid than the normal diet in a rat model.

Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) poses a significant threat to preterm infants, with nonspecific early manifestations complicating timely diagnosis. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel scoring system for early diagnosis of NEC, incorporating clinical and laboratory data with urinary caveolin-1 levels. Material and methods: A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in East Java, Indonesia. NEC diagnosis was established by Bell's criteria and proven gut dysbiosis. Urinary levels of claudin-2, caveolin-1, and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were assessed as potential indicators of tight junction disruption. The selected urine biomarker cutoff value was determined using symbolic classification analysis and combined with clinical and laboratory parameters from Bell's criteria to create an NEC scoring system, validated with the Aiken index. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed. Results: Thirty-four neonates, comprising NEC, preterm non-NEC, and term infants, were included. qPCR analysis highlighted elevated Klebsiella, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, and Bacteroides levels in NEC patients, indicating a gut dysbiosis trend. Among 3 biomarkers, caveolin-1 ≥ 17.81 ng/dl on day 3 demonstrated 72.86% negative predictive value and 87.50% positive predictive value. The combined scoring system which comprised abdominal cellulitis, distension, radiology, advanced resuscitation at birth, prematurity or low birthweight, platelet count, sepsis, orogastric retention, metabolic acidosis and caveolin-1 findings exhibited an AUC of 0.922 (95% CI: 0.81-1.00, p < 0.001), with ≥ 1.81 as the cutoff, offering 93% sensitivity and 94% specificity. Conclusions: Urine caveolin-1 on day 3 signifies enterocyte tight junction damage and the acute phase of NEC in premature infants. The proposed scoring system demonstrates good performance in predicting NEC incidence in preterm infants.

Biofilm-related infections play a significant role in the development and persistence of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) frequently causes biofilm-related infections associated with ventilator tubing. Glucosamine gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) may exhibit antibiofilm properties; however, more studies, including combinatorial therapy with antibiotics, are needed to explore their potential applications in clinical settings. This study aims to investigate the biofilm inhibition properties of glucosamine AuNPs in combination with meropenem against P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 on the endotracheal tube. A biofilm inhibition assay of glucosamine AuNPs at 0.02 mg/mL, both singly and in combination with meropenem at 1 mg/mL, was carried out against P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 on an endotracheal tube using the tissue culture plate method. Scanning electron microscopy was performed for visualization. Glucosamine AuNPs at 0.02 mg/mL combined with meropenem at 1 mg/mL showed greater biofilm inhibition (72%) on the endotracheal tube than glucosamine nanoparticles at 0.02 mg/mL alone (26%) (p = 0.001). The scanning electron microscopic visualization revealed that the untreated P. aeruginosa biofilm was denser than the glucosamine nanoparticles-treated biofilm, whether combined with meropenem or using glucosamine nanoparticles alone. The combination of glucosamine AuNPs and meropenem may have the synergistic effect of inhibiting biofilm production of P. aeruginosa on the endotracheal tubes of patients with mechanical ventilation. Conducting additional experiments to explore the impact of combining glucosamine-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with meropenem on the inhibition of biofilm production by clinical P. aeruginosa isolates would be beneficial.

Antimicrobial resistance may develop in nature including in hospital wastewater through horizontal genetic transfer. Few studies were conducted on the antimicrobial resistance genes in hospital wastewater and wastewater isolates in Indonesia. The prevalence and abundance of beta-lactam resistance genes in hospital wastewater and Enterobacterales wastewater isolates were investigated. Twelve wastewater samples were collected from an influent wastewater treatment plant. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated from the wastewater samples by culture-based methods. DNA was extracted from wastewater samples and the isolates. Nineteen beta-lactam resistance genes were tested by a high throughput qRT-PCR method. blaGES and blaTEM were the most abundant genes detected in hospital wastewater and Escherichia coli, respectively (p < 0.001). The relative abundance of blaCMY_2, blaCTX-M5, blaCTX-M8, blaGES, blaNDM, and blaSHV11 in Klebsiella pneumoniae was higher than in the wastewater and Escherichia coli (p < 0.001; p = 0.006; p = 0.012; p < 0.001; p = 0.005; p < 0.001). Klebsiella pneumoniae might be associated with resistance to piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftriaxone, and cefepime (p < 0.001; p = 0.001; p < 0.001). In conclusion, ESBL genes showed higher abundance than carbapenemase genes in hospital wastewater samples. The ESBL-producing bacteria that were predominantly found in hospital wastewater may originate from clinical specimens. The culture-independent antibiotic resistance monitoring system might be developed as an early warning system for the increasing beta-lactam resistance level in clinical settings.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection is the most common infection due to joint replacement. It has been reported that, over a 5-year time span, 3.7 % of cases occurred annually. This statistic has increased to 6.86 % over 16 years. Thus, an effective method is required to reduce these complications. Several strategies such as coating methods with various materials, such as antibiotics, silver, and iodine, have been reported. However, the best preventive strategy is still undetermined. Therefore, this systematic review aims to evaluate the outcome of coating methods on joint arthroplasty as a treatment or preventive management for infection complications. Methods: Eligible articles were systematically searched from multiple electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane library, and ScienceDirect) up to 2 June 2022. Based on the criterion inclusion, eight articles were selected for this study. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the study, and the meta-analysis test was conducted with Review Manager 5.4. Results: The quality of the articles in this study is in the range of moderate to good. It was found that the application of modified antibiotic coatings significantly reduced the occurrence of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) ( p 0.03), and silver coating could not significantly ( p 0.47) prevent the occurrence of PJI. However, according to the whole aspect of coating modification, the use of antibiotics, silver, and iodine can minimize the occurrence of PJI ( p   < 0.0001 ). Conclusion: Coating methods using antibiotics are an effective method that could significantly prevent the occurrence of PJI. On the other hand, coating with non-antibiotic materials such as silver could not significantly prevent the incidence of PJI.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii)-calcoaceticus complex (CRAb-cc) is an important pathogen causing nosocomial infections worldwide; however, molecular epidemiology of the A. baumannii-calcoaceticus complex in Indonesian hospitals is scarce. This study aimed to determine the clonal relatedness of CRAb-cc in two tertiary care hospitals in Malang and Manado in Indonesia. The CRAb-cc isolates from routine clinical cultures in two tertiary care hospitals in Malang and Manado were identified using the Vitek2® system (bioMérieux, Lyon, France). Multi-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA) typing, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), clonal complex (CC), and phylogenetic tree analysis were conducted for a subset of isolates. Seventy-three CRAb-cc isolates were collected. The CRAb-cc isolates were frequently found among lower-respiratory-tract specimens. We detected the MLVA type (MT) 1, MT3, and MT4 CRAB-cc isolates belonging to the sequence type (ST) 642, and CC1 was the predominant clone in this study. In conclusion, we identified the clonal relatedness of A. baumannii-calcoaceticus complex isolates in two tertiary care hospitals in Malang and Manado in Indonesia. Further study is required to investigate the clinical importance and distribution of ST642 in Indonesian hospitals for developing prevention and control measures.

The prevalence of bacteremia caused by carbapenem-non-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii (CNSAB) continues to increase, and it is associated with a high mortality rate. Early recognition of infection and mortality determinants risk factors is necessary for adequate antibiotic administration. We aimed to determine the risk factors and outcomes of CNSAB bacteremia in Indonesia. A multicenter case-control study was conducted in three referral hospitals in Indonesia. Data were collected retrospectively from January 2019 to December 2021. Cases were defined as patients with bacteremia where CNSAB was isolated from the blood, while the controls were patients with bacteremia caused by carbapenem-susceptible A. baumannii (CSAB). Risk factors for bacteremia and mortality associated with CNSAB bacteremia were determined using univariates analysis (chi-squared and Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney test) and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A total of 144 bacteremia patients were included, of whom 72 patients were for each case and control group. The final model of multivariate regression analysis revealed that bacteremia source from the lower respiratory tract (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 3.24; 95% CI: 1.58-6.63, p = 0.001) and the use of central venous catheter (aOR: 2.56; 95% CI: 1.27-5.18; p = 0.009) were independent risk factors for CNSAB bacteremia. Charlson Comorbidity Index ≥ 4 (aOR: 28.56; 95% CI: 3.06-265.90, p = 0.003) and Pitt Bacteremia Score ≥ 4 (aOR: 6.44; 95% CI: 1.17-35.38; p = 0.032) were independent risk factors for mortality due to CNSAB bacteremia. Only high Pitt Bacteremia Score was an independent risk factor for mortality of CSAB bacteremia. In conclusion, we identified the risk factors for CNSAB-associated bacteremia and the risk factors for death, which are relevant for empiric therapy and infection control prevention, as well as prognosis evaluation of patients with bloodstream infections.

Carbapenem non-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii (CNSAB) is an important pathogen that causes nosocomial bacteremia among critically ill patients worldwide. The magnitude of antibiotic resistance of A. baumanii in Indonesia is expected to be significant; however, the data available are limited. The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic profiles of CNSAB isolates from patients with bacteremia in Indonesia. CNSAB isolates from blood cultures of bacteremia patients in 12 hospitals in Indonesia were included. The blood cultures were conducted using the BacT/Alert or BACTEC automated system. The CNSAB were identified with either Vitek 2 system or Phoenix platform followed by a confirmation test using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, targeting the specific gyrB gene. The carbapenemase genes were detected by multiplex PCR. In total, 110 CNSAB isolates were collected and were mostly resistant to nearly all antibiotic classes. The majority of CNSAB isolates were susceptible to tigecycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), 45.5% and 38.2%, respectively. The blaOXA-51-like gene was identified in all CNSAB isolates. Out of the total, 83.6% of CNSAB isolates had blaOXA-23-like gene, 37.3% blaOXA-24-like gene, 4.5% blaNDM-1 gene, 0.9% blaIMP-1 gene, and 0.9% blaVIM gene. No blaOXA-48-like gene was identified. The blaOXA-23-like gene was the predominant gene in all except two hospitals. The presence of the blaOXA-24-like gene was associated with resistance to tigecycline, amikacin, TMP-SMX and cefoperazone-sulbactam, while blaOXA-23-like gene was associated with resistance to TMP-SMX and cefoperazone-sulbactam. In conclusion, the blaOXA-23-like gene was the predominant gene among CNSAB isolates throughout Indonesia. A continuous national surveillance system needs to be established to further monitor the genetic profiles of CNSAB in Indonesia.

Multinational surveillance programmes for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are dependent on national structures for data collection. This study aimed to capture the diversity of national MRSA surveillance programmes and to propose a framework for harmonisation of MRSA surveillance. The International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC) MRSA Working Group conducted a structured survey on MRSA surveillance programmes and organised a webinar to discuss the programmes' strengths and challenges as well as guidelines for harmonisation. Completed surveys represented 24 MRSA surveillance programmes in 16 countries. Several countries reported separate epidemiological and microbiological surveillance. Informing clinicians and national policy-makers were the most common purposes of surveillance. Surveillance of bloodstream infections (BSIs) was present in all programmes. Other invasive infections were often included. Three countries reported active surveillance of MRSA carriage. Methodology and reporting of antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence factors, molecular genotyping and epidemiological metadata varied greatly. Current MRSA surveillance programmes rely upon heterogeneous data collection systems, which hampers international epidemiological monitoring and research. To harmonise MRSA surveillance, we suggest improving the integration of microbiological and epidemiological data, implementation of central biobanks for MRSA isolate collection, and inclusion of a representative sample of skin and soft-tissue infection cases in addition to all BSI cases.

INTRODUCTION: Citrus hystrix is widely used by Indonesians as a traditional medicine for gastrointestinal diseases, including Salmonella spp. infection. We investigated the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic peel extract of C. hystrix against Salmonella typhimurium. METHODS: The antibacterial activity was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract was determined at a concentration of 0.625% by agar dilution assay. Later, the in vivo antibacterial activity was examined by the administration of 16mg of the extract daily for three consecutive days in a mouse model infected with S. typhimurium. RESULTS: The bacterial loads of S. typhimurium in the ileum, liver, and spleen decreased after 24h of administration of the extract (p=0.00008, p=0.00084, and p=0.00003, respectively). CONCLUSION: The ethanolic peel extract of C. hystrix shows antibacterial activity against S. typhimurium, indicating the potential of C. hystrix as an effective treatment for Salmonella spp. infection.

Introducción: El Citrus hystrix es muy utilizado por los indonesios como medicina tradicional para las enfermedades gastrointestinales, incluida la infección por Salmonella spp. Investigamos la actividad antibacteriana del extracto etanólico de piel de C. hystrix frente a Salmonella typhimurium. Métodos: La actividad antibacteriana se evaluó tanto in vitro como in vivo. La concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) del extracto se determinó a una concentración del 0,625% mediante un ensayo de dilución en agar. Posteriormente, se evaluó la actividad antibacteriana in vivo mediante la administración de 16mg de extracto de forma diaria durante 3 días consecutivos en un modelo murino infectado con S. typhimurium. Resultados: La carga bacteriana de S. typhimurium en el íleo, el hígado y el bazo se redujo 24h después de la administración del extracto (p=0,00008, p=0,00084 y p=0,00003, respectivamente). Conclusión: El extracto etanólico de piel de C. hystrix muestra actividad antibacteriana frente a S. typhimurium, lo que indica el potencial de C. hystrix como tratamiento eficaz para la infección por Salmonella spp.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is endemic in healthcare settings in Indonesia. AIM: To evaluate the effect of a bundle of preventive measures on the transmission and acquisition of MRSA in a surgical ward of a resource-limited hospital in Indonesia. METHODS: The study consisted of a pre-intervention (7 months), intervention (2 months), and post-intervention phase (5 months) and included screening for MRSA among eligible patients, healthcare workers (HCWs), and the hospital environment. In the intervention phase, a bundle of preventive actions was introduced, comprising: a hand hygiene educational program, cohorting of MRSA-positive patients, decolonization therapy for all MRSA-positive patients and HCWs, and cleaning and disinfection of the ward's innate environment. Hand hygiene compliance was assessed throughout the study period. The primary outcome was the acquisition rate of MRSA among patients per 1,000 patient-days at risk. Clonality of MRSA isolates was determined by Raman spectroscopy and multilocus sequence typing. FINDINGS: In total, 1,120 patients were included. Hand hygiene compliance rate rose from 15% pre-intervention to 65% post-intervention (P<0.001). The MRSA acquisition decreased from 9/1,000 patient-days at risk pre-intervention to 3/1,000 patient-days at risk post-intervention, but this difference did not reach statistical significance (P=0.08). Raman type 9 which belonged to ST239 was the single dominant MRSA clone. CONCLUSION: The introduction of a bundle of preventive measures may reduce MRSA transmission and acquisition among surgery patients in a resource-limited hospital in Indonesia, but additional efforts are needed.

OBJECTIVES: To define the role of Staphylococcus aureus in community settings among patients with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) in Indonesia. METHODS: Staphylococcus aureus were cultured from anterior nares, throat and wounds of 567 ambulatory patients presenting with SSTI. The mecA gene and genes encoding Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL; lukF-PV and lukS-PV) and exfoliative toxin (ET; eta and etb) were determined by PCR. Clonal relatedness among methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and PVL-positive S. aureus was analysed using multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA) typing, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for a subset of isolates. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) was determined for all MRSA isolates. Moreover, determinants for S. aureus SSTI, and PVL/ET-positive vs PVL/ET-negative S. aureus were assessed. RESULTS: Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from SSTI wounds of 257 (45.3%) patients, eight (3.1%) of these were MRSA. Genes encoding PVL and ETs were detected in 21.8% and 17.5% of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), respectively. PVL-positive MRSA was not detected. Nasopharyngeal S. aureus carriage was an independent determinant for S. aureus SSTI (odds ratio [OR] 1.8). Primary skin infection (OR 5.4) and previous antibiotic therapy (OR 3.5) were associated with PVL-positive MSSA. Primary skin infection (OR 2.2) was the only factor associated with ET-positive MSSA. MLVA typing revealed two more prevalent MSSA clusters. One ST1-MRSA-SCCmec type IV isolate and a cluster of ST239-MRSA-SCCmec type III were found. CONCLUSIONS: Community-acquired SSTI in Indonesia was frequently caused by PVL-positive MSSA, and the hospital-associated ST239-MRSA may have spread from the hospital into the community.

This study aimed to identify risk factors for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage among patients at admission to the surgery ward in a resource-limited hospital in Indonesia. A case-control study was performed including 65 MRSA carriage patients and 132 non-MRSA carriage patients screened at admission to surgery wards in a hospital in Malang, East Java. For MRSA screening, swabs were obtained from nares and throat, cultured in an enrichment broth followed by subculturing onto CHROMagar™ MRSA; suspected colonies were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. Patients referred from other hospitals, patients transferred from the surgical acute care unit, patients that had a surgical procedure within 3 months before admission, and immunocompromised patients were more likely to be MRSA carriers at admission to the surgery wards. Selective MRSA screening of patients according to such risk factors at admission would efficiently detect MRSA carriers and may help control MRSA dissemination in surgery wards in limited-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is recognized as an important measure to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Hand hygiene adherence among healthcare workers is associated with their knowledge and perception. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three different educational programs on improving hand hygiene compliance, knowledge, and perception among healthcare workers in a tertiary care hospital in Indonesia. METHODS: The study was performed from May to October 2014 and divided into a pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention phase. This cluster randomized controlled trial allocated the implementation of three interventions to the departments, including role model training-pediatrics, active presentation-surgery, a combination of role model training and active presentation-internal medicine, and a control group-obstetrics-gynecology. Both direct observation and knowledge-perception survey of hand hygiene were performed using WHO tools. RESULTS: Hand hygiene compliance was observed during 2,766 hand hygiene opportunities, and knowledge-perception was assessed among 196 participants in the pre-intervention and 88 in the post-intervention period. After intervention, the hand hygiene compliance rate improved significantly in pediatrics (24.1% to 43.7%; P < 0.001), internal medicine (5.2% to 18.5%; P < 0.001), and obstetrics-gynecology (10.1% to 20.5%; P < 0.001). The nurses' incorrect use of hand rub while wearing gloves increased as well (P < 0.001). The average knowledge score improved from 5.6 (SD = 2.1) to 6.2 (SD = 1.9) (P < 0.05). In the perception survey, "strong smell of hand alcohol" as a reason for non-compliance increased significantly in the departments with intervention (10.1% to 22.9%; P = 0.021). CONCLUSION: The educational programs improved the hand hygiene compliance and knowledge among healthcare workers in two out of three intervention departments in a limited-resource hospital in Indonesia. Role model training had the most impact in this setting. However, adjustments to the strategy are necessary to further improve hand hygiene.

Epidemiological data of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage in Indonesian hospitals are still scarce. These data are required for health management of infectious diseases in order to control hospital MRSA. The carriage rate of MRSA in nose and throat of patients on admission to Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya, Indonesia was 8.1% of 643 patients, 5.4% from throat, 3.9% from nose and 1.2% from both sites. Prevalence of MRSA among patients admitted to surgical and non-surgical ward was not different (8.2% and 8.0%, respectively). Although MRSA prevalence in Indonesian hospitals is low compared to many other countries worldwide, appropriate health strategies will be needed to be implemented if this infection is to be controlled.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and clonal distribution of either methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive S. aureus obtained from clinical cultures in Indonesian hospitals. METHODS: S. aureus isolates from clinical cultures of patients in four tertiary care hospitals in Denpasar, Malang, Padang and Semarang were included. We assessed the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles using the Vitek2(®) system, determined the presence of the mecA gene and genes encoding PVL using PCR and analysed the clonal relatedness with Raman spectroscopy. SCCmec typing was performed for all MRSA isolates. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed for a subset of isolates. RESULTS: In total, 259 S. aureus strains were collected. Of these, 17/259 (6.6%) and 48/259 (18.5%) were MRSA and PVL-positive methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), respectively. The prevalence of MRSA and PVL-positive MSSA ranged between 2.5-8.9% and 9.5-29.1%, respectively and depended on geographic origin. PVL-positive MRSA were not detected. Raman spectroscopy of the strains revealed multiple Raman types with two predominant clusters. We also showed possible transmission of a ST239-MRSA-SCCmec type III strain and a ST121 PVL-positive MSSA in one of the hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that MRSA and PVL-positive MSSA are of clinical importance in Indonesian hospitals. A national surveillance system should be set-up to further monitor this. To reduce the prevalence of MRSA in Indonesian hospitals, a bundle of intervention measures is highly recommended.

Data of Staphylococcus aureus carriage in Indonesian hospitals are scarce. Therefore, the epidemiology of S. aureus among surgery patients in three academic hospitals in Indonesia was studied. In total, 366 of 1,502 (24.4%) patients carried S. aureus. The methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) carriage rate was 4.3%, whereas 1.5% of the patients carried Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). Semarang and Malang city (odds ratio [OR] 9.4 and OR 9.0), being male (OR 2.4), hospitalization for more than 5 days (OR 11.708), and antibiotic therapy during hospitalization (OR 2.6) were independent determinants for MRSA carriage, whereas prior hospitalization (OR 2.5) was the only one risk factor for PVL-positive MSSA carriage. Typing of MRSA strains by Raman spectroscopy showed three large clusters assigned type 21, 24, and 38, all corresponding to ST239-MRSA-SCCmec type III. In conclusion, MRSA and PVL-positive MSSA are present among patients in surgical wards in Indonesian academic hospitals.
