We assessed newborn lambs from two hair-coat sheep breeds, the black Santa Ines (n = 29) and white Dorper (n = 26), to determine how they behaviourally and physiologically respond to the prevailing thermal conditions in an equatorial semi-arid environment. Measurements of hair-coat surface temperature, rectal temperature and the lambs' exposure to sun were recorded across the first 24 h of life every hour, after the lambs had received colostrum. Lambs and ewes were kept in a lambing pen and could freely move between a shaded area or be exposed to sun. During the study period, the air temperature ranged between 20 ºC and 34 ºC. When exposed to sun, lambs and ewes could experience as much as 1200 W m-2 of solar irradiance. Santa Ines lambs exhibited higher (highest density interval at 95%, HDI) hair-coat surface temperatures than did Dorper lambs. Overall, both Santa Ines and Dorper lambs sustained homeothermy, with a mean rectal temperature ranging from 38.7 ºC to 39.1 ºC between night and daytime phase, and a mean amplitude of ~ 0.8 ºC. Nevertheless, from 10:00 to 15:00, some lambs were found to be moderately hyperthermic. Five Santa Ines and three Dorper lambs had rectal temperatures above 40 ºC, and one Santa Ines lamb, while exposed to sun, had a rectal temperature of 41.3 ºC. Over this time period, lambs were more likely to move to shade (HDI at 95%). From 00:00 to 06:00, despite the air temperature being lower than the hair-coat surface, favouring high rates of sensible heat loss to the environment, no lamb exhibited signs of hypothermia (rectal temperature < 37.5 ºC). In conclusion, haired newborn lambs coped well with high levels of radiant heat during the daytime and lower temperatures at night. However, providing access to shade during the daytime is important to improve the welfare of newborn lambs delivered in equatorial semi-arid regions.

El diagnóstico de retinopatía aguda zonal oculta externa (AZOOR) se presenta como un desafío en la práctica del oftalmólogo. En esta enfermedad fueron descritos varios hallazgos atípicos, pero el edema del disco óptico es raro. Pretendemos describir un diagnóstico desafiador de AZOOR. Presentamos el caso de una mujer de 19 años con pérdida de visión del ojo derecho, sin dolor, con 2 semanas de evolución. El fondo de ojo presentaba edema con hiperemia del disco óptico y la campimetría demostraba una mancha ciega aumentada. Se ha considerado como diagnóstico neuritis óptica, sin causa infecciosa, por lo que ha realizado tratamiento con corticoide. Después de 4 meses, la agudeza visual había mejorado, pero persistían las alteraciones en la campimetría con hiperautofluorescencia alrededor del disco óptico. La tomografía óptica de coherencia demostró pérdida generalizada de las capas externas de la retina y disminución de la reflectancia de la región correspondiente. Se concluye que el edema de la papila no es un hallazgo frecuente de AZOOR, por lo que representa una enfermedad de difícil diagnóstico (AU)

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical Bayesian approach for modeling the evolution of the 7-day moving average for the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in a country, state or city. The proposed approach is based on a Gaussian process regression model. The main advantage of this model is that it assumes that a nonlinear function f used for modeling the observed data is an unknown random parameter in opposite to usual approaches that set up f as being a known mathematical function. This assumption allows the development of a Bayesian approach with a Gaussian process prior over f. In order to estimate the parameters of interest, we develop an MCMC algorithm based on the Metropolis-within-Gibbs sampling algorithm. We also present a procedure for making predictions. The proposed method is illustrated in a case study, in which, we model the 7-day moving average for the number of deaths recorded in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Results obtained show that the proposed method is very effective in modeling and predicting the values of the 7-day moving average.

In this study we pretend to describe a challenging diagnosis of AZOOR. In our case, a 19-year-old female presented painless vision loss in her right eye for 2 weeks. Fundus examination revealed optic disc hyperaemic edema and the visual field (VF) an enlarged blind spot. Non-infectious optic neuritis was assumed and intravenous corticotherapy administered. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biochemical and hormonal variables of Moxotó and Canindé goats submitted to two temperatures - 26.0±0.6 (thermoneutral) and 32.0±1.2°C (above thermal comfort zone) - and consuming water with three levels of salinity (1.0, 6.0 and 12.0 dSm-1). Thirty-six animals (18 of each breed) were used, with an average age of 5.0±0.6months and an average weight of 20.0±2.3kg, housed in metabolic cages inside a climate chamber. The animals were distributed in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial scheme (2 breeds, 2 temperatures and 3 levels of salinity) and three replications. The glucose and urea had a significant effect (P>0.05) according to water salinity. Glucose, cholesterol, protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase and hormones (T4, T3 and cortisol) varied according to temperature (P<0.05). There was a significant effect of time on hormonal variables (P<0.05). Biochemical and hormonal variables changed according to temperature and day shift, so that metabolism was reduced in the animals under thermal stress and accelerated when animals were in the thermal comfort zone.(AU)


O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as variáveis bioquímicas e hormonais de caprinos das raças Moxotó e Canindé, submetidos a duas temperaturas (26,0±0,6ºC e 32,0±1,2ºC), termoneutra e acima da zona de conforto térmico, respectivamente), consumindo água com três níveis de salinidade (1,0, 6,0 e 12,0dSm-1), utilizando-se 36 animais (18 de cada raça), com idade média de 5,0±0,6 meses e peso médio de 20,0±2,3kg, alojados em gaiolas metabólicas no interior de uma câmara climática. Os animais foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com esquema fatorial de 2 x 2 x 3 (2 raças, 2 temperaturas e 3 níveis de salinidade) e três repetições. A glicose e a ureia apresentaram efeito significativo (P<0,05) em função da salinidade da água. Glicose, colesterol, proteína, albumina, globulina, AST e hormônios (T4, T3 e cortisol) variaram conforme as temperaturas (P<0,05). Observou-se efeito significativo do horário sobre as variáveis hormonais (P<0,05). As variáveis bioquímicas e hormonais sofrem alterações em função da temperatura e do turno do dia, de modo que o metabolismo é reduzido em animais sob estresse térmico e acelerado quando os animais encontram-se na zona de conforto térmico.(AU)

Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are an essential part of defense mechanisms within the lungs and their phagocytic activity is important for organ homeostasis. The phagocytic ability of AMs obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage from 17 mature mixed-breed pleasure horses (8 healthy and 9 diagnosed with mild equine asthma) was studied through assays with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis promastigotes, which enabled the calculation of a phagocytic index (PI) and a survival index (SI). Results indicate that phagocytic activity of AMs in asthma affected horses is similar to healthy horses, while leishmanicidal activity is significantly increased in horses with asthma.(AU)


Os macrófagos alveolares (MAs) são uma parte essencial dos mecanismos de defesa dentro dos pulmões e sua atividade fagocítica é importante para a homeostase desse órgão. A capacidade fagocitária dos MAs obtidos do lavado broncoalveolar de 17 equinos adultos, sem raça definida (oito saudáveis e nove com diagnóstico de asma equina leve), foi estudada por meio de ensaios com promastigotas de Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis. Foi calculado o índice fagocítico e o índice de sobrevivência. Os resultados indicam que a atividade fagocítica de MAs em cavalos com asma é semelhante a cavalos saudáveis, enquanto a atividade leishmanicida está significativamente aumentada em cavalos com essa enfermidade.(AU)

Extracellular traps (ETs), web-like structures composed of DNA and histones, are released by innate immune cells in a wide range of organisms. ETs capture microorganisms, thereby avoiding their spread, and also concentrate antimicrobial molecules, which helps to kill microbes. Although vertebrate innate immune systems share homology with the insect immune system, ETosis have yet to be characterized in insects. Here, we report that the hemocytes of the hemimetabolous insect Periplaneta americana release ETs upon in vitro stimulation. We further discuss the relationship between ETs and nodulation and in controlling bacterial spread in vivo.

Animal bites are a serious public health issue, and prevention strategies have been consistently documented worldwide. The aim of this study was to characterize human anti-rabies treatment in 11 counties of the Salgado microregion, Pará state, Brazil, which borders the Bragantina microregion, where exposures of human rabies were reported in 2004 and 2005. A descriptive retrospective study was conducted using anti-rabies treatment notifications registered in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) database of the State Department of Public Health of Pará (SESPA) from January 2000 to December 2014. In this period, 13,403 exposures were reported, with a growing annual trend (Y = 68.571x + 344.96). The years 2012 and 2013 presented the highest exposure incidence. Salinópolis was the county with the highest average annual incidence per 10,000 persons (62.83), followed by São João de Pirabas (43.28) and São Caetano de Odivelas (41.27). Most patients were males (59.6%) and were 1-19 years old (48.7%). The main species involved in aggressions were dogs (74.1%), followed by bats (13.1%) and cats (7.4%). Biting was the most common kind of exposure, mostly on the lower limbs (39.6%). This study shows that aggression by bats was the second most common cause of demand for the service in the region for the past 14 years. The low quality of records may increase the difficulty of rabies surveillance in Pará.

Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Leishmania and includes cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral clinical forms. The drugs currently available for leishmaniasis treatment are pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B and miltefosine, which present high toxicity, elevated cost and development of parasite resistance. The natural products constitute an important source of substances with leishmanicidal potential. Here we evaluated in vitro the anti-Leishmania amazonensis activity of crude extracts of branches, leaves and fruits of Guatteria latifolia. The branch extract (GCE) exhibited promising leishmanicidal activity against promastigotes (IC50 51.7 µg/ml), and was submitted to fractionation guided by in vitro assays. Among the seven subfractions obtained, GF1 and GF2 were the most actives against promastigotes with IC50 25.6 and 16 µg/ml, respectively. Since GCE, GF1 and GF2 were not toxic for macrophages, next, we tested their effect on intracellular amastigotes, and the IC50 values obtained were, respectively 30.5, 10.4 and 7.4 µg/ml, after 24 h treatment. The selectivity index for GCE, GF1 and GF2 were >6.5, >19.2 and > 27, respectively. Additionally, GCE, GF1 and GF2 affected the division pattern of the promastigotes by increasing 6.7, 9.4 and 7-fold the cells in Sub-G0/G1 phase, and decreasing 1.6, 2.5 and 1.8-fold the cells in G0/G1 phase, respectively. To assess the GCE and GFs capacity to modulate microbicidal mechanisms of macrophages, nitric oxide (NO) and TNF-α production were tested. Our results indicated that at the IC50s GCE, GF1 and GF2 decreased NO production of infected macrophages stimulated with IFN-γ and LPS, besides, only GF1 decreased the production of TNF-α. Our data warrant further studies of GCE, GF1 and GF2 to identify active compounds against Leishmania parasites.

The objective of this study was to confirm the influences of stress from labor and climate on the formation of the mother-offspring bond in Morada Nova sheep in the first 2 h after delivery or at the moment of the first suckling of the newborn. The data were collected from 80 Morada Nova ewes (25 primiparous and 55 multiparous) and their lambs in 2 periods of the year. On the basis of the average length of parturition and the black globe temperature-humidity index (BGTHI) at the time of the birth, the ewes were grouped into 3 classes corresponding to the length of parturition, classified as short (less than 15 min), medium (between 15 and 30 min), or long (more than 30 min). Similarly, the BGTHI at the moment of birth was classified into 1 of 3 ranges: low (less than 65), intermediate (greater than 65 but less than 80), and high (greater than 80). For the characterization of mother-offspring behavior, evaluations were performed in the first 2 h after birth or until the moment of the first suckling of the newborn. Maternal factors such as maternal grooming, facilitating sucking, frequency of low-pitched bleats, and latency to groom were recorded. For the lamb, attempts to seek the udder, the frequency of low-pitched bleats, latency to first reaction, latency to stand, and latency to suckle were recorded. The lambs were slower (P < 0.05) to stand and suckle when they were born in conditions of a BGTHI below 65. The latencies to stand and suckle were greater (P < 0.05) in newborn lambs born during labor that took more than 30 min. For maternal behaviors, activities such as maternal grooming and the facilitation of suckling were greater (P < 0.05) during the time periods with higher bioclimatic index values. Moreover, the dams cleaned or licked (maternal grooming) the newborns for a lower percentage of time (P < 0.05) when the labor lasted longer than 30 min. From the present study, it can be concluded that newborn Morada Nova lambs are slower to stand and suckle when born under BGTHI conditions below 65. Furthermore, prolonged labor harms the mother-offspring bond, especially in terms of the dam's ability to clean (maternal grooming) her lamb's body and facilitate its first suckling.

AIM: To verify the orofacial and dental complex in individuals affected by leprosy concerning lesions, prevalence of dental caries and biofilm storage. METHODS: This study was performed on 56 patients with leprosy: 28 under treatment and 28 treated for the disease. A clinical form was prepared to include demographic and leprosy data. The prevalence of caries was analyzed using the decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index and oral hygiene was evaluated using the Plaque Control Record. The statistical significance was measured by chi-square and Student's t-test. RESULTS: The mean age was 56.4 years, and there was predominance of males. The treatment group had more women (Pearson ÷2=12.47, p=0.0004) and younger patients (Pearson ÷2=9.688, p=0.0079) than the healed group. As much as 30.4% of patients had orofacial complaints related to the disease. The most often observed variations of normality as racial melanin pigmentation (67.8%) and lingual varices (32.1%), and lesions such as atrophy of the anterior nasal spine (25%), inflammatory papillary hyperplasia (17.8%), and collapse of the nasal bridge (14.3%). There were no specific oral lesions among leprosy patients. The mean DMFT was 20.8 and the Plaque Control Record was 70.2%. The treated group had higher DMFT than the treatment group (Student's t p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The oral health status of individuals with leprosy is poor, with high levels of plaque and DMFT. No oral lesions associated with the disease were seen.

Strigomonas culicis is a monoxenous trypanosomatid that co-evolves with a symbiotic bacterium in a mutualistic relationship that is characterized by intense metabolic exchanges between both partners. S. culicis infects and colonizes the Aedes aegypti mosquito midgut, reaches its hemocoel and then invades the salivary glands. An artificial aposymbiotic strain is unable to colonize insects, reinforcing the idea that the bacterium influences the protozoan surface composition and cell interaction. Here, we report the characterization of the hydrolytic activity of ecto-phosphatases evaluated in symbiont-bearing and aposymbiotic strains of S. culicis by incubating the protozoa with p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP) at different pH levels, in the presence of phosphatase inhibitors, and with several divalent metals. The symbiont-bearing and aposymbiotic cells differ in their ecto-phosphatase enzymes, based on their activities and specificities. Furthermore, the ability of the protozoan to bind to the mosquito midgut and salivary glands was impaired by ecto-phosphatase inhibition. Taken together, our data suggest that the symbiont influences the host protozoan ecto-phosphatase activity and indicate a possible role of this enzyme during mosquito tissue colonization by S. culicis.

Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação dietética de fontes orgânicas de microminerais para galinhas poedeiras sobre o desempenho e a qualidade do ovo. Foram utilizadas 216 aves de linhagem comercial, distribuídas num delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e nove repetições, com seis aves por parcela. O experimento teve duração de 140 dias, divididos em cinco ciclos de 28 dias. Os tratamentos consistiram de uma dieta basal formulada para atender às exigências nutricionais das aves, suplementada com minerais na forma inorgânica ou porcentagens de minerais orgânicos: T1 - Basal + 100% minerais inorgânicos; T2 - Basal + 100% minerais orgânicos; T3 - Basal + 66% minerais orgânicos; T4 - Basal + 33% minerais orgânicos. A produção de ovos, peso do ovo, massa de ovo, conversão alimentar por massa e dúzia de ovo, porcentagem de albúmen, gravidade específica, espessura de casca e margem bruta relativa apresentaram melhores resultados quando os minerais inorgânicos são substituídos em 66% pelos orgânicos.


This study evaluated the effect of the supplementation with organic microminerals on performance and egg quality of semi-heavy layers. Dekalk Brown layers (n=216) were distributed according to a completely randomized design into four treatments, nine repetitions and six birds per repetition. The experiment lasted 140 days and was comprised of five 28 day cycles. The basal diet was formulated to fulfill the nutritional requirements and was supplemented with organic or inorganic minerals, resulting in four treatments: T1 - basal + 100% inorganic minerals; T2 - basal + 100% organic minerals; T3 - basal + 66% organic minerals; T4 - basal + 33% organic minerals. Egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion for dozen and mass, albumen percentage, specific gravity, shell thickness and relative gross margin have better results when the inorganic minerals are replaced with 66% organic.

RESUMO

Hemangioma de mama é um tumor benigno raro que apresenta pouca ou nenhuma captação de 18F-flúor-2-deoxi-Dglicose (FDG) na tomografia por emissão de pósitrons (PET). Relatamos um nódulo mamário compatível, patologicamente, com hemangioma, em uma mulher cuja PET scan demonstrou captação elevada de FDG (simulando tumor maligno). Também fizemos breve revisão das causas que levam a resultados falso-positivos e falso-negativos pela PET.


Breast hemangioma is a rare benign tumor that presents either absent or low 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake at positron emission tomography (PET). The authors report the case of a breast nodule pathologically compatible with hemangioma in a woman whose PET-scan has demonstrated increased FDG uptake (simulating a malignant tumor). A brief review of factors leading to false positive and false negative PET results is also undertaken.

Leishmaniasis is a tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania which affects 12 million people worldwide. The discovery of drugs for the treatment of leishmaniasis is a pressing concern in global health programs. The aim of this study aim was to evaluate the leishmanicidal effect of piperine and its derivatives/analogues on Leishmania amazonensis. Our results showed that piperine and phenylamide are active against promastigotes and amastigotes in infected macrophages. Both drugs induced mitochondrial swelling, loose kinetoplast DNA, and led to loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. The promastigote cell cycle was also affected with an increase in the G1 phase cells and a decrease in the S-phase cells, respectively, after piperine and phenylamide treatment. Lipid analysis of promastigotes showed that piperine reduced triglyceride, diacylglycerol, and monoacylglycerol contents, whereas phenylamide only reduced diacylglycerol levels. Both drugs were deemed non toxic to macrophages at 50 µM as assessed by XTT (sodium 2,3,-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-5-[(phenylamino)-carbonyl]-2H-tetrazolium inner salt), Trypan blue exclusion, and phagocytosis assays, whereas low toxicity was noted at concentrations higher than 150 µM. None of the drugs induced nitric oxide (NO) production. By contrast, piperine reduced NO production in activated macrophages. The isobologram analysis showed that piperine and phenylamide acted synergistically on the parasites suggesting that they affect different target mechanisms. These results indicate that piperine and its phenylamide analogue are candidates for development of drugs for cutaneous leishmaniasis treatment.

AIM: To demonstrate that the evaluation of erythrocyte dysmorphism by light microscopy with lowering of the condenser lens (LMLC) is useful to identify patients with a haematuria of glomerular or non-glomerular origin. METHODS: A comparative double-blind study between phase contrast microscopy (PCM) and LMLC is reported to evaluate the efficacy of these techniques. Urine samples of 39 patients followed up for 9 months were analyzed, and classified as glomerular and non-glomerular haematuria. The different microscopic techniques were compared using receiver-operator curve (ROC) analysis and area under curve (AUC). Reproducibility was assessed by coefficient of variation (CV). RESULTS: Specific cut-offs were set for each method according to their best rate of specificity and sensitivity as follows: 30% for phase contrast microscopy and 40% for standard LMLC, reaching in the first method the rate of 95% and 100% of sensitivity and specificity, respectively, and in the second method the rate of 90% and 100% of sensitivity and specificity, respectively. In ROC analysis, AUC for PCM was 0.99 and AUC for LMLC was 0.96. The CV was very similar in glomerular haematuria group for PCM (35%) and LMLC (35.3%). CONCLUSION: LMLC proved to be effective in contributing to the direction of investigation of haematuria, toward the nephrological or urological side. This method can substitute PCM when this equipment is not available.

Leishmanicidal activity of 6alpha, 7alpha, 15beta, 16beta, 24-pentacetoxy-22alpha-carbometoxy-21beta,22beta-epoxy-18beta-hydroxy-27,30-bisnor-3,4-secofriedela-1,20 (29)-dien-3,4 R-olide (LLD-3 (1)) isolated from Lophanthera lactescens Ducke, a member of the Malpighiaceae, was demonstrated against intramacrophage amastigote forms (IC(50) of 0.41mug/mL). The in vitro leishmanicidal effect of Glucantime, the first choice drug for leishmaniasis treatment, was increased by LLD-3 (1) association. The leishmanicidal effect of LLD-3 (1) was not due to stimulation of nitric oxide production by macrophages. LLD-3 (1) was also not cytotoxic for mouse peritoneal macrophages or B cells as assessed by the XTT and Trypan blue exclusion assays. LLD-3 (1) was unable to affect proliferation of naïve or activated B and T cells, as well as the B cells immunoglobulin synthesis. Cellularity of different tissues, liver and kidney functions were not altered in mice treated with LLD-3 (1), as well as the histology pattern of different organs. Our results add LLD-3 (1) as a potential drug candidate for treatment of leishmaniasis.

Leishmania proteinase activity is known as parasite differentiation marker, and has been considered relevant for leishmanial survival and virulence. These properties suggest that Leishmania proteinases can be promising targets for development of anti-leishmania drugs. Here, we analyze the activities of four proteinases during the early phase of the Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes differentiation into amastigotes induced by heat shock. We have examined activities of cysteine-, metallo-, serine-, and aspartic-proteinase by hydrolysis of specific chromogenic substrates at pH 5.0 and at the optimal pH for each enzyme. Our results show that metallo-, serine-, and aspartic-proteinases activities were down-regulated during the shock-induced transformation of promastigotes into amastigotes. In contrast, cysteine-proteinase activity increased concomitantly with the promastigote differentiation. Immunocytochemical localization using two anti-cysteine-proteinase monospecific rabbit antibodies detected the enzyme in several cell compartments of both parasite stages. Our results show different proteinase activity modulation and expression during the early phases of the shock-induced parasite transformation.

O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi verificar a conicidade e irregularidades dos canais radiculares instrumentados pelos sistemas, Pow-R.04, Profile.04,. Utilizou-se 45 raízes de pré-molares inferiores humanos unirradiculares, divididas em grupos de 15 espécimes, sendo as coroas seccionadas no limete amelo-cementário. Realizou-se a odontometria pela técnica visual direta com a lima n° 10 e intrumentação pela técnica Escalonada Dinâmica preconizada pela Disciplina de Endodontia da FOP/UPE (sistema Pow-R e Profile). Quanto aos espécimes do grupo Protaper, foram instrumentados pela técnica preconizada pelo fabricante. Em seguida, foi injetado no interior os canais, silicona de condensação através de seringa apropiada. Após a presa do material, as raízes foram seccionadas e a mensuração dos moldes realizada através do uso de um paquímetro nos terços médio e cervical. Estes valores foram analisados estatisticamente pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis, com nível de significância de 5 por cento, onde no grupo I (Protaper) obteve-se como valores médios para o terço cervical 2,30mm e terço médio 1,23mm; grupo II (Pow-R.04) no terço cervical 2,50mm e terço médio 1,17mm e no grupo III (Profile.04) observou-se para o terço cervical 2,73mm e terço médio 1,20mm. Pôde-se concluir que o grupo III apresentou melhor conicidade cérvico-apical quando comparado aos grupos I e II, não sendo porém estatisticamente significante

Leishmania metacyclogenesis is associated with changes in morphology, gene expression, and structural alterations of the lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the promastigote most abundant surface glycolipid. Purification of metacyclics is accomplished using lectins or monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that exploit stage-specific differences in the LPG. Besides, LPG displays extensive interspecies polymorphisms and is synthesized by promastigotes of all species investigated to date. In this work we studied the species- and stage-specificity of two MAbs (3A1-La and LuCa-D5) used to purify metacyclics of Leishmania amazonensis. Their ability to recognize different members of the Trypanosomatidae family was tested by direct agglutination, indirect immunofluorescence, and dot-blot analysis of LPG. We found that both MAbs were highly selective for L. amazonensis: 3A1-La recognized only promastigotes and LuCa-D5 labeled amastigote and promastigote stages of this species. These MAbs might be useful for Leishmania typing.
