RESUMO

Introduction: Patients with schizophrenia require extended treatment and recovery, leaving their families and support systems feeling helpless. Integrative empowerment is a strategy that utilizes outside-in and inside-out empowerment to increase the ability of families to care for their loved ones and prevent relapse. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of integrative empowerment intervention on enhancing the family's ability to care for and prevent relapse in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The research sample was comprised of 70 individuals from nuclear families residing in Semarang, all of whom were responsible for the care of individuals with schizophrenia. The participants were divided into two groups: the treatment group, consisting of 35 individuals, and the control group, also comprising 35 individuals. Participant selection was carried out using purposive sampling. Module and booklet were produced as an intervention tools. The integrative empowerment intervention program spanned a period of 5 weeks, involving one session per week, each lasting approximately 60-90 min. Data analysis was conducted through the utilization of the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The significance level for the study was set at p<.05. Results: There was a significant change in the family's ability to care for patients with schizophrenia before and after the integrative empowerment intervention (p<.001), while there was no change in the control group's ability to care for patients with schizophrenia (p>.05). Integrative empowerment had a significant impact on increasing the family's ability to care for and prevent relapse in patients with schizophrenia (p<.001). Conclusions: Nurses can help families strengthen their positive caregiving experiences through the home visit program by utilizing integrative empowerment. This study's findings highlight the importance of integrative empowerment in enhancing the family's ability to care for and prevent relapse in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Self-care behavior is crucial in preventing chronic diseases, such as hypertension, which has become highly prevalent in Indonesia. Hypertension, often referred to as the "silent killer" due to its asymptomatic nature, can easily go unnoticed. Neglecting its treatment can lead to severe complications, including heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Despite adults with hypertension feeling well, embracing self-care behavior, including making healthy lifestyle choices, disease management, and enhancing life quality, remains essential. Objective: This study aimed to describe the self-care behavior of adult patients with hypertension in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 270 participants selected through consecutive sampling. Data were collected between 15 March and 4 April 2023, using the Hypertension Blood Pressure Self Care Profile (HBP-SCP) questionnaire in six public healthcare centers in Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: The self-care behavior among adult patients with hypertension was at a moderate level (Mean = 49.78, SD = 6.64), and it had significant differences according to ethnicity (p = 0.041), marital status (p = 0.017), and body mass index (p = 0.008). Conclusion: The findings highlight the influence of diverse ethnic backgrounds, various marital statuses, and differing body mass index levels, which may lead to distinct approaches to managing hypertension. These results offer valuable insights for nurses and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive strategies to enhance self-care among adult patients with hypertension.

Background: Clinical practice is a demanding academic activity for nursing students, and a variety of factors can affect this perception. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of perceived stress among Indonesian nursing students during their clinical practice. Methods: From September to November 2022, this cross-sectional investigation was carried out. Five questionnaires, including the socio-demographic, the PSS, the GHQ, the CBI, the MSPSS and the RSES, were completed by 208 participants. With significance set to p < 0.05, the Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were carried out. Results: Coping strategies (r = 0.20, p < 0.01), overall health (r = 0.50, p < 0.01), social support (r = -0.34, p < 0.01) and self-esteem (r = -0.51, p < 0.01) were all substantially linked with perceived stress. Furthermore, age (ß = -0.22, p < 0.001), coping style (ß = 0.22, p < 0.001) and self-esteem (ß = -0.42, p < 0.001) substantially predicted perceived stress among nursing students. Conclusion: The study's findings revealed strong relationships between perceived stress and general health, coping mechanisms, self-esteem and social support. These results can be utilised as evidence to help educators and other stakeholders develop programmes that effectively manage stress among nursing students during their clinical rotations.

Background: Emotional and Behavioral Problems (EBPs) are prevalent among adolescents, and adolescents' capacity for adaptation can be influenced by their interactions with their parents, environment, and self-esteem. This link has not been systematically examined among adolescents in West Sumatra, Indonesia. This study aimed to assess the association of parental attachment and self-esteem with EBPs in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to November 2022 in Padang West Sumatra, Indonesia. In total, 854 students from public senior high school 4 Padang were involved in this study and completed questionnaires on demographics, EBPs, parental attachment, and self-esteem. There was a total of five subscales for EBPs, which included emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems and prosocial. Additionally, there were three subscales for parental attachment, which included the mother's attachment, father's attachment, and peer attachment. Spearman's correlation, independent-sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were employed to examine factors associated with EBPs. Results: This study showed that father's attachment (r = -0.191, p < 0.001), mother's attachment (r = -0.241, p < 0.001), and self-esteem (r = -0.437, p < 0.001) were negatively correlated with EBPs. The linear regression analysis showed EBPs was associated with father's education, father's communication, father's alienation, mother's alienation, and self-esteem. All predictors of overall EBPs among adolescents were able to explain 31 % of the variance in EBPs. Conclusion: High self-esteem and a strong parental attachment have positive outcomes in terms of mental health in adolescents. Thus, increasing adolescent self-esteem and establishing a warm parent attachment can be the main target in providing interventions for Indonesian adolescents with EBPs.

Background: Adolescence is a transitional phase from childhood to adulthood, characterized by various biological, psychological, and social changes. Adolescents living in coastal regions are exposed to social-environmental risk factors that can affect their emotional wellbeing, primarily due to the demanding and unpredictable nature of coastal communities. These challenging and volatile circumstances can have a negative impact on adolescents' emotions, making them more vulnerable to mental and emotional disorders. Objective: This study aimed to examine the self-concept and its differences according to sociodemographic factors among adolescents residing in coastal areas of Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed for this study, which involved 644 adolescents living in coastal regions of Indonesia, specifically in the West Sumatra and Bali provinces. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) 2nd Edition Short Form was used to assess self-concept from August to September 2022. Descriptive statistics, Independent-t-test, and One-way ANOVA were utilized for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed that adolescents in coastal areas had a high level of self-concept. A statistically significant difference was discovered in the overall self-concept according to gender (p = 0.002). Similarly, a significant difference was observed in the physical domain based on class level (p = 0.019). Regarding the personal domain, significant differences were identified according to age (p = 0.030), class level (p = 0.030), parent's marital status (p = 0.030), father's education (p = 0.05), and family income (p = 0.01). Furthermore, in the family domain, significant differences were found based on parents' marital status (p <0.001) and adolescents' residence status (p = 0.002). Additionally, a significant difference in the academic domain was observed with respect to gender (p = 0.001). However, no significant differences were noted in the moral ethics and social domains across all sociodemographic variables (p >0.05). Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for attention from various stakeholders, including mental health nurses, to prioritize interventions to promote positive self-concept among adolescents, consider sociodemographic factors that influence self-concept, and address areas of dissatisfaction such as moral behavior and academic/work efficiency. Incorporating family support and nurturing positive parent-child relationships are also important for fostering a healthy self-concept in adolescents.
