RESUMO

Deep-water sampling of the Orinoco River main channel resulted in the collection of an unexpectedly high abundance and diversity of specialized fishes. Twenty-eight of the more than 60 species collected belong to the Gymnotiformes(New World electric or knife fishes). One of the more numerous of these, a recently described species of the genus Rhabdolichops, consumes large numbers of very small planktonic Crustacea and insect larvae. These items are captured in the very swift, turbid, and deep waters of the Orinoco. Although the strong dependence of the river food web on terrestrial and floodplain food sources is well known, the specialized capabilities of Rhabdolichops and of other fishes that occur with it indicate a significant extension of the river food web into the main channel.

RESUMO

Based on a long-standing cooperation in medicine and public health between the United States and the Soviet Union, and on the potential contributions to be made by scientists from both of these countries, the World Health Organization invited an American-Soviet collaborative team to recommend a cancer control program for the Government of India. The consultants defined the importance of cancer of the cervix uteri and of the oral cavity, which comprise one-half of India's cancer cases, as the basis for a cancer control program. They recommended incorporation of cancer control functions into the organizational structure of the Ministry of Health as well as specific recommendations in education, prevention, and early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiologic studies. The mission underscores the value of multinational cooperation on health care problems that are faced in common by the United States, the Soviet Union, and other countries of the world. In addition it serves as a basis for international friendship and understanding in the context of mutually productive activities which may provide a benefit for all nations.

RESUMO

Tests were carried out on pocket mice to ascertain their tolerance to elevated oxygen pressures alone and to a combination of hyperoxta and heat in excess of that expected during the flight of the mice on Apollo XVII. the mice withstood oxygen partial pressures up to 12 pst at normal room temperature (24 degrees C, 75 degrees F) over a period of 7 days. A few mice previously exposed to increased PO2 died in the course of exposure to an oxygen pressure of 10 pst or 12 psi (517 mm or 620 mm Hg) for 13 d in ambient heat of 32 degrees C (90 degrees F). Supplemental vitamin E and physiological saline loading given prior to exposure had no apparent protective effect. The overall conclusion was that the pocket mice which were to go on Apollo XVII could readily survive the ambient atmosphere to which they would be exposed.
