RESUMO
Loss of vitreous volume as a result of injury or surgical intervention leads to death of the eye. The authors developed a method for hyalocyte culturing on the glass in culture medium. Culture medium was as follows (100 ml): 50 ml medium 199, 30 ml lactate albumin hydrolysate, and 20 ml human serum, group IV. Vitreous cells were collected from rabbit eyes. Primary and secondary growth zones were distinguished in the course of culture growth. Morphologically intact rabbit hyalocytes in the culture were polymorphous. These results may indicate a possibility of transplanted culture development in a live eye.

Remote results (from 10 to 20 years) after operation in 36 patients with uveal cataracts and adhesion and obliteration of the pupil have shown a slight rise of visual acuity to 0.09-0.1 in 24 eyes, this being connected with lesion of the choroid, retina, atrophy of the optic nerve, cornea, vitreous body, atrophy of the optic nerve. In 19 eyes uveitis recurred. Surgical technique and the choice for the terms of operation are pointed out. A conclusion is made that massive antiinflammatory therapy with prescription of corticosteroids should be carried out in the postoperative period.

Using disc-electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel and immunochemical methods, studies have been made on proteins from the vitreous body of mammals (albino mouse, rat, guinea pig, pig, dog, cat), birds (hen), amphibians (the frog Rana ridibunda) and fish (the perch Perca fluviatilis). It was found that vitreous body proteins in man and animals include both the specific proteins and those of the blood serum. During evolution, specific antigens of the vitreous body attained strict species specificity, although some of them preserved the initial properties.

Sodium or potassium benzylpenicillin in a dose of 200000 units 6 times a day and streptomycin sulfate in a dose of 0.5 g twice a day were used intramuscularly during the postoperative period for prevention of purulent inflammatory complications in 172 out of 187 patients with myopic disease subjected to scleroplastic operations performed according to the methods of Shevelev-Kertin, N. N. Pivovarov and V. I. Savinykh. The antibiotic use decreased the period of the inpatient treatment from 28+/-2 to 14+/-2 days and lowered the levels of tenonitis and edema of the eye mucosa. No purulent dissolution of the orbital tissues was observed in the patients.
