The present study aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology, risk factors, and haemato-biochemical changes in anaplasmosis in Indian dromedary camels. Blood samples collected from 103 camels were analysed using blood smear examination and semi-nested PCR based on the 16s rRNA gene to diagnose anaplasmosis. The prevalence of anaplasmosis was estimated to be 42.72% (95% CI: 33.59-52.37) by PCR assay and 16.5% (95% CI: 10.47-24.95%) by blood smear examination. Phylogenetic analysis of six partial sequences of 16s rRNA gene obtained in the present study indicated the involvement of multiple Anaplasma species, including A. marginale and A. platys, showing genetic similarity with cattle strains. A novel genotype related to A. camelii/A. cinensis/A. platys group was also identified. Hemato-biochemical examination revealed mild anaemia, increased serum urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, and decreased total protein and albumin levels in Anaplasma-positive animals. The infections were largely subclinical in nature, except in one camel that revealed fever, inappetence, and pale mucous membrane and responded well to treatment with oxytetracycline. To our knowledge, this is the first molecular study on camel anaplasmosis in India, indicating a high prevalence of infection and involvement of multiple Anaplasma species with potential risk for interspecies transmission.

Availability of ample and nutritious fodder for livestock is always a challenge in arid region. Choice of crops such as groundnut that can fulfil the requirement of fodder with its crop residues along with human needs can be a viable option to bridge the gap between availability and requirement of fodder. The fodder yield and quality largely depend on soil moisture and nutrient supply especially sulphur (S), a key nutrient for improving groundnut fodder quality. However, no researchers have given emphasis on coupling effect of drip irrigation (DI) and sulphur on fodder yield, quality, digestibility and water use efficiency (WUE). Therefore, the study was conducted to determine the effects of different regimes of DI and S on productivity and quality of fodder. Results revealed that higher regimes of DI i.e. 0.8 +1.0 PE(pan evaporation) and 1.0 PE level of irrigation along with 40 kg S ha-1 significantly improved the yield, primary quality traits (crude protein, ether extract and ash), digestibility indices and significant reduction in Fibers which indicates improvement in quality of fodder. Fodder productivity was 27.0 and 25.6% higher in 1.0 PE and 0.8+1.0 PE level of irrigation, respectively, as compared to 0.6 PE level (lower water regime) of irrigation, although 0.6 PE level of irrigation recorded higher WUE and was at par with 0.8 PE and 0.6 +1.0 PE level of DI. By changing the levels of DI from 1.0 PE to 0.8+1.0 PE, considerable water can be saved without affecting the yield and quality of fodder. Similarly, crop responded to S up to 60 kg ha-1 but at par with 40 kg S ha-1 indicating that application of extra S after 40 kg did not warrant any extra benefit in terms of fodder yield, WUE and quality of fodder. Thus, adjusting the PE levels of DI for water saving and optimal S application can be a sustainable strategy to improve the productivity and quality of groundnut fodder in arid region.

Camel invokes fascinating chapter of Indian desert history and is integral component of its ecosystem. Camel population has reached a crisis point after three decades of decline (75%) causing major concern to the policy makers. >28% of Indian camel is not yet characterized. It is imperative to describe country's camel germplasm and its existing diversity for designing conservation plan. One such population is Sindhi, distributed along border with Pakistan. Twenty five microsatellite markers being valuable tool for estimating genetic diversity were selected to elucidate genetic variability and relationship of Sindhi with two registered camel breeds of India- Marwari and Kharai. The standard metrics of genomic diversity detected moderate variability in all the three populations. A total of 303 alleles with a mean of 8.116 ± 0.587 alleles per locus were found in total of 143 animals. Sindhi population had intermediate allelic diversity with 8.522 ± 1.063 alleles per locus. Corresponding values in Marwari and Kharai were 8.783 ± 0.962 and 7.043 ± 1.030, respectively. Genetic variability within the breeds was moderate as evidenced by the mean observed heterozygosity of 0.556 ± 0.025. Sindhi camel population harbors higher genetic variability (Ho = 0.594) as compared to the two registered camel breeds (Marwari, 0.543 and Kharai, 0.531). Mean expected heterozygosity under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was higher than the observed values across the three camel groups, indicating deviations from assumptions of this model. In fact, average positive F value of 0.084 to 0.206 reflected heterozygote deficiency in these populations. These Indian camel populations have not experienced serious demographic bottlenecks in the recent past. Differences among populations were medium and accounted for 7.3% of total genetic variability. Distinctness of three camel populations was supported by all the approaches utilized to study genetic relationships such as genetic distances, phylogenetic relationship, correspondence analysis, clustering method based on Bayesian approach and individual assignment. Sindhi camel population was clearly separated from two registered breeds of Indian camel. Results conclude Sindhi to be a separate genepool. Moderate genetic diversity provides an optimistic viewpoint for the survival of severely declining indigenous camel populations with appropriate planning strategies for conserving the existing genetic variation and to avoid any escalation of inbreeding.

Accurate early antemortem diagnosis of tuberculosis in dromedary camels is difficult due to the lack of reliable diagnostic test. The present study aimed to evaluate a lateral flow assay-based kit (rapid assay kit) in tuberculosis diagnosis that employs immuno-chromatographic detection of antibodies in serum, plasma, or whole blood. In a dromedary camel herd comprising 337 animals located at Bikaner, Rajasthan, India, 50 adult weak camels (11 males and 39 females) were tested by applying a single intradermal tuberculin test (SIDT) and rapid assay kit. A total of 14 animals (2 males, 12 females) were found positive in rapid assay. In SIDT, four animals revealed a positive reaction in the neck region and seven animals in the tail base. Another male animal was found SIDT positive but negative in rapid assay; it died after 12 months. Nine rapid assay positive animals died asymptomatically in 1- to 11-month period revealing postmortem tuberculosis lesions that were confirmed by Ziehl-Neelsen staining and histopathology. No tuberculous lesion was evident in the animal found positive in SIDT alone. Results of the present study indicated that serological tests like rapid assay kit can serve as a reliable test for antemortem diagnosis of tuberculosis in dromedary camel.
