RESUMO

Incisional iris biopsy was performed for diagnosis of an unusual opaque white mass protruding from the right ventrolateral iris of a 10-year-old neutered male Great Dane dog. Histopathology revealed a diagnosis of bone formation within otherwise normal iris tissue. No underlying etiology was identified. Osseous metaplasia or heterotopic bone formation may be an additional differential diagnosis for a nonneoplastic mass in the eye of a dog.

RESUMO

The effect of trimethoprim-sulfadiazinea on Schirmer tear test (STT) values was studied in a population of dogs treated with the drug for a variety of medical and postsurgical conditions. The objectives of the study were to determine the incidence of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) secondary to trimethoprim-sulfadiazine therapy; to determine if such incidence was related to dose, duration, or both; and to identify any other factors that increased patient risk. The package insert accompanying Tribrissen states that "Dogs can tolerate up to ten times the recommended therapeutic dose without exhibiting ill effects." The results of this study indicated a 15.2% (5/33) incidence of KCS in the population of treated dogs.

RESUMO

Mass-like lesions of the iris were evaluated in 15 horses or ponies of various ages and breeds. Breed or gender predilection was not found. These lesions were most often found in blue irides at the 12 o'clock region. Because the lesions transilluminated and changed shape rapidly with changes in pupillary size, they were hypothesized to be zones of iris hypoplasia. Histologic evaluation of one specimen supported this interpretation. The lesions were not associated with any other ocular or systemic abnormality.

RESUMO

Efficacy of zinc citrate ascorbate was evaluated in 146 dogs (265 eyes) that had various lens opacities. Zinc citrate ascorbate or saline placebo drops were applied topically once or twice daily for 4 to 31 weeks. Of 138 eyes treated with zinc citrate ascorbate, 86 eyes (62.3%) had no change, 48 eyes (34.8%) had increased lens opacity, and 4 eyes (2.9%) had decreased lens opacity. Of 127 eyes treated with a saline placebo, 99 eyes (77.9%) had no change, 25 eyes (19.7%) had increased lens opacity, and 3 eyes (2.4%) had decreased lens opacity. Zinc citrate ascorbate drops were not significantly (P = less than 0.05) more effective in clearing cataracts than were saline drops. Seemingly, zinc citrate ascorbate drops may have caused lens opacities to increase in area and density.

RESUMO

Between the optic nerve and its sheath is a small, CSF-filled space that communicates with the subarachnoid space of the brain. A technique for the radiographic opacification of the optic nerve subarachnoid space following the intrathecal injection of metrizamide was investigated in 8 dogs. The technique enabled indirect visualization of the optic nerves from the optic chiasm to the eyeball and of structures within the subarachnoid basal cisterns of the brain, including the optic chiasm, hypophysis, and blood vessels of the cerebral arterial circle. Displacement and obstruction of the optic nerve subarachnoid space were demonstrated after surgically creating optic nerve lesions to simulate orbital tumors and trauma. The technique was found to be safe, effective, and advantageous over other techniques currently available for the visualization of these structures.

RESUMO

Computed tomography (CT) was used to investigate orbital tumors in 3 dogs. Tumors were clearly defined on transverse CT scans by their inherent density and gross distortion of normal orbital anatomy. Dorsal images synthesized from the original transverse scans were also used to visualize size and extent of tumors. Use of an iodinated contrast medium did not appear to improve localization of tumors in the orbit but was useful for identification of tumor extension into the calvaria. It was concluded that CT offered advantages over existing methods of radiographic diagnosis of orbital tumors and exophthalmos.
