RESUMO

A versatile, robust, and stable tetrabutylammonium difluorotriphenylsilicate (TBAT) catalyst has been deployed for efficient depolymerization of silicones. This catalyst is soluble in a variety of organic solvents and is stable up to 170 °C, enabling a wide range of reaction conditions under which F--catalysed siloxane bond cleavage can be initiated. This effort offers significant advancement overcoming the traditional limitations of silicone depolymerization, such as high catalyst loading, storage and handling, and few viable reaction media.

Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8) associated angio-proliferative disorder commonly seen in patients with HIV. It most commonly involves the skin as classic purple lesions but occasionally involves the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. To date, published data is scarce on primary GI KS. Using a national database, this study analyzes the incidence, demographics, and survival of primary GI KS. We conducted a retrospective analysis (1975-2019) on biopsy-proven primary GI KS cases from 17 registries from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. A total of 685 patients with GI KS were identified. Female gender, Non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander (NHAPI), married marital status, and large bowel site-specific primary KS to have better overall survival. Luminal gastrointestinal KS was more frequent (84.96%) than solid organ involvement (3.07% of all cases). This study is the most extensive population-based study about the epidemiological and survival data of patients with primary GI KS, revealing GI KS to be a young male disease with best outcomes in the large bowel and anal canal KS while inferior outcomes in extraintestinal GI KS.

Hot-iron branding uses thermal injury to permanently identify cattle causing painful tissue damage. The primary objective was to examine the physiological and behavioral effects of oral meloxicam (MEL), compared to a control, administered at the time of hot-iron branding in Angus and Hereford steers and heifers. The secondary objectives were to investigate breed and sex effects on pain biomarkers. A total of 70 yearlings, consisting of 35 heifers and 35 steers (Angus, Hereford, or Angus × Hereford), were enrolled in the study. Animals were blocked by sex, randomized across weight, and assigned to receive MEL (1 mg/kg) or a placebo (CON). Biomarkers were assessed for 48 h after branding and included infrared thermography (IRT), mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), accelerometry and a visual analog scale (VAS), and serum cortisol and prostaglandin E2 metabolites (PGEM). Wound healing was assessed for 12 wk. Hair samples to quantify cortisol levels were taken prior to and 30 d post-branding. Responses were analyzed using repeated measures with calf nested in treatment as a random effect, and treatment, time, treatment by time interaction, breed, and sex as fixed effects. There was a treatment by time interaction for PGEM (P < 0.01) with MEL having lower values than CON at 6, 24, and 48 h (MEL: 18.34 ± 3.52, 19.61 ± 3.48, and 22.24 ± 3.48 pg/mL, respectively; CON: 32.57 ± 3.58, 37.00 ± 3.52, and 33.07 ± 3.48 pg/mL; P < 0.01). MEL showed less of a difference in maximum IRT values between the branded (2.27 ± 0.29 °C) and control site (3.15 ± 0.29 °C; P < 0.01). MEL took fewer lying bouts at 0-12 h (4.91 bouts ± 0.56) compared with CON (6.87 bouts ± 0.55; P < 0.01). Compared with Hereford calves, Angus calves exhibited greater serum but lower hair cortisol, greater PGEM, more lying bouts, and less healed wound scores at 3, 4, and 5 wk. Compared with heifers, steers exhibited lower PGEM, lower branding site and ocular IRT, higher MNT, and lower plasma meloxicam levels. Steers spent more time lying, took more lying bouts and had greater VAS pain, and more healed wound scores at 5 wk than heifers. Meloxicam administration at branding reduced branding and control site temperature differences and reduced lying bouts for the first 12 h. Breed and sex effects were observed across many biomarkers. Changes from baseline values for IRT, MNT, lying time, step count, VAS pain, and wound scoring all support that branding cattle is painful.

MEL administration reduced IRT differences from the branding and control site and reduced lying bouts. Breed and sex effects were observed across a wide range of biomarkers and should be considered in future pain studies. The practicality of administering a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug once at the time of branding is attractive. However, a multimodal approach using a combination of analgesics or longer acting analgesic option warrants further investigation to alleviate pain and discomfort caused by hot-iron branding.

Hot-iron branding is a traditional form of permanent cattle identification in the United States. There is a need for science-based determination of cattle brand age. Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used to obtain information about animal tissues and healing processes. Height-width allometry and NIRS were applied to hot-iron cattle brand scars to determine if either or both of these methods can be used to non-invasively establish the interval sincethe application of hot-iron cattle brands. Length and width of a brand routinely applied to calves (~30-60 d old) were established and then the same measurements were recorded on 378 calfhood branded cattle of known age ranging from 0.5 to > 6.5 yr-of-age. Brand width and height increased over the original measurements by > 100% between calfhood application and 2.5 yr-of-age (P < 0.001). Brand size did not change dramatically between 2.5 and > 6.5 yr, however, both width and height were (P < 0.05) greater at maturity than at weaning. Near infrared spectra were collected from a) branded skin b) non-clipped (hair), non-branded skin, and c) hair clipped, non-branded skin on Bos taurus cross calves. Individual trial calibrations yielded high R 2 and low SE of calibration values as well as similar cross validation performance (P < 0.001). Numerically lower but still strong performance (P < 0.001) resulted from combined data set calibrations. Cross-trial prediction of brand age was unsuccessful. One single year calibration underpredicted (P < 0.001) brand age of an independent validation set by 2.83 d, and another single year calibration underpredicted (P < 0.001) the same validation set by 9.91 d. When combined, these two datasets resulted in a calibration that overpredicted brand age in the validation set by 6.9 d (P < 0.02). Discriminant analyses for identification of skin surface type yielded success rates of 90% for branded, 99% for non-clipped, non-branded, and 96% for clipped, non-branded (P < 0.01). Discriminant analyses were also performed on samples grouped into a) less than 33 d, b) 141-153 d, and c) 169 d categories. All group membership identifications were successful at greater than 90% (P < 0.01). Preliminary results indicate that brand size could be used to indicate brand age and that NIRS can predict brand age as well as discriminate between broad brand age groups in cattle. More work will need to be done before these techniques can be used in real-world forensic applications.

Farm-scale and agent-based models draw typically on detailed and preferably spatially explicit single farm data. Data protection standards however restrict or exclude their access, as for example in Germany. We provide data on a synthetic farm population of the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, mainly based on the German Farm Structure Survey 2016 and plot specific crop data from 2019/2020. The population is derived from farm typology at administrative unit level to which the observed plots are allocated afterwards. The data contains 25,858 farms and covers 1.3 million ha of agricultural land, provided at plot scale in a geospatial vector and at farm scale in tabular format. For each plot, the managing farm (including the estimated farm's location), the number of livestock, the cultivated crop, as well as the corresponding administration units are indicated. Furthermore, spatial data such as yield information, soil characteristics, as well as monitoring data on environmental status are attached. The provided data allows for diverse analysis on the farm population in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia with farm, agent-based or different bio-physical models. Furthermore, it can serve as a test data set for models which require detailed and spatially explicit farm data.

Fluoride-bearing apatite minerals such as fluorapatite (FAP: Ca10(PO4)6F2) and related carbonate-rich fluorapatites (CFA: Ca10(PO4)5(CO3,F)F2), which occur ubiquitously as trace components of rocks and sediments, may act as sources for geogenic groundwater fluoride contamination. CFA dissolution often occurs in conjunction with declining dissolved calcium concentrations. Therefore, managed aquifer recharge (MAR) operations using deionised or low calcium source water are at risk of disturbing the naturally persisting geochemical equilibrium between CFA and the ambient groundwater and induce fluoride mobilisation. In this study, we employ reactive transport modelling to investigate how an engineered manipulation of the MAR source water composition might mitigate such groundwater fluoride contamination. Based on a previously developed and calibrated model for Australia's largest groundwater replenishment operation, we investigate the efficiency of (i) raising aqueous calcium concentration through the addition of CaCl2 or Ca(OH)2 amendment, (ii) raising aqueous sodium concentrations through the addition of NaCl or sea salt amendment and (iii) raising the pH. The modelling results illustrate in detail how the geochemical zonation around injection boreholes evolves over time and how this affects fluoride release and attenuation for the different amendment types. Treatments involving the addition of calcium and sodium in the source water are both found to be effective at reducing maximum groundwater fluoride concentrations during MAR, with calcium generally producing the greatest reduction in maximum fluoride concentrations. In contrast, increasing the injectate pH was found to be inefficient in reducing fluoride concentrations significantly due to the strong pH buffering effect of the aquifer sediments.

The objectives were to determine if strategic supplementation of range cows in central Arizona with either two or four long acting (6 mo) trace mineral rumen boluses containing Cu, Se, and Co would: 1) decrease yearly calving interval; 2) increase cow body condition, milk production, or calf adjusted weaning weights; and 3) to see if any of the above traits varied by cow breed. There were 194 Hereford (H) and 132 Composite (CGC; 50% Red Angus, 25% Tarentaise, 25% Charolais) control cows, 173 H and 125 CGC 1X treated (2 boluses in late winter) cows, and 183 H and 117 CGC 2X treated (2 boluses in autumn and 2 in late winter) cows used over the 4-yr period. Cows were weighed and scored for body condition (1-9, 9 = fattest) in February, May, and September of each year. Milk production was determined by weigh-suckle-weigh on a subset of cows (n = 169) at an average of 50 d lactation. The outcomes were analyzed using a restricted maximum likelihood-based mixed-effects model that included the categorical, fixed effects of breed, bolus, and year with the interactions of breed × bolus, and breed × year. For adjusted weaning wt (WW), year × bolus was added. The random effect of cow was also included. Calving interval had only the breed × bolus interaction added to the main effects. Age of dam was added as a covariate to all models. Milk production used the same model as calving interval with the added covariate of postpartum interval. Cow body condition score and calf adjusted weaning weights differed by breed and treatment (P < 0.05) with WW being greater (P < 0.05) for calves from 2X cows than for control calves. Milk production differed by year (P < 0.0001) but did not differ by either breed or treatment (P > 0.05). Calving interval was 389 ± 2.7, 382 ± 3.2, and 378 ± 3.2 d for control, 1X, and 2X treatments, respectively and calving interval declined (P < 0.05) from the control to the 2X treatment group. Strategic supplementation via a long-acting trace mineral bolus was successful in decreasing calving interval and increasing calf-weaning weights from cattle grazed in an extensive rangeland environment.

In water-scarce areas, the reclamation of wastewater through advanced water treatment and subsequent reinjection into depleted aquifers is an increasingly attractive water management option. However, such injection can trigger a range of water-sediment interactions which need to be well understood and quantified to ensure sustainable operations. In this study, reactive transport modeling was used to analyze and quantify the interacting hydrogeochemical processes controlling the mobilization of fluoride and phosphate during injection of highly treated recycled water into a siliciclastic aquifer. The reactive transport model explained the field-observed fluoride and phosphate transport behavior as a result of the incongruent dissolution of carbonate-rich fluorapatite where (i) a rapid proton exchange reaction primarily released fluoride and calcium, and (ii) equilibrium with a mineral-water interface layer of hydrated dibasic calcium phosphate released phosphate. The modeling results illustrated that net exchange of calcium on cation exchange sites in the sediments postbreakthrough of the injectant was responsible for incongruent mineral dissolution and the associated fluoride and phosphate release. Accordingly, amending calcium chloride into the injectant could potentially reduce fluoride and phosphate mobilization at the study site. Insights from this study are broadly applicable to understanding and preventing geogenic fluoride mobilization from fluoride-bearing apatite minerals in many other aquifers worldwide.

This work examines the extent to which thermal boundary layer effects limit the performance of micromachined microphones. The acoustic impedance of the cavity formed by the microphone enclosure is calculated using both analytical and finite-element methods. A thermal correction to the cavity impedance is included to account for the transition of compression and expansion within the enclosure from adiabatic to isothermal when the thermal boundary layer that forms at the walls of the enclosure becomes large compared to the enclosure dimensions. The thermal correction to the cavity impedance contains a resistive term that results from thermal relaxation losses and contributes thermal-acoustic noise to the system. A lumped-element network model for the microphone response which includes the thermally corrected enclosure impedance is presented and compared to measured results for a case study device. The relative noise power contribution of each noise source considered in the model is calculated. It is shown that the noise due to the resistive term of the enclosure cavity impedance becomes significant when the enclosure volume is small. This sets a theoretical limit on the noise floor that can be achieved by a micromachined microphone with given enclosure dimensions.

RESUMO

After surviving a severe brain injury from a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) blast and working daily to reclaim his life, one of the military's finest was ready to pursue community employment. At 27-years-old, he completed an 8-year-long, comprehensive traumatic brain injury rehabilitation program by making an autobiographical documentary. The documentary served as a stepping stone for his community employment as well as a means to encourage others to keep working toward their goals. He is now successfully employed, on a part-time basis, with a local retailer, in his home community. This paper outlines the progression from initial concept to a completed documentary. It tracks his experiences and accomplishments through years of rehabilitation therapy, through making an autobiographical documentary, to bridging a transition from his identity as a rehabilitation patient to a working member of his home community.

Femtosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation provided by the free-electron laser FLASH was used for digital in-line holographic microscopy and applied to image particles, diatoms and critical point dried fibroblast cells. To realize the classical in-line Gabor geometry, a 1 microm pinhole was used as spatial filter to generate a divergent light cone with excellent pointing stability. At a fundamental wavelength of 8 nm test objects such as particles and diatoms were imaged at a spatial resolution of 620 nm. In order to demonstrate the applicability to biologically relevant systems, critical point dried rat embryonic fibroblast cells were for the first time imaged with free-electron laser radiation.

The flexor-pronator mass is thought to be the primary dynamic valgus stabilizer of the elbow and protects the ulnar collateral ligament. However, in vivo multiaxis actions of individual muscles of the flexor-pronator group and their roles in valgus stability have not been investigated quantitatively. This study tested the hypothesis that individual muscles of the flexor-pronator muscle group produce a significant varus moment that provides elbow valgus stability. The flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis, and pronator teres were selectively activated, and the resulting multiaxis moments at the elbow measured at 0 degrees , 30 degrees , 60 degrees , and 90 degrees of elbow flexion using a six-axis force sensor were analyzed for their role in generating varus moment and protecting the ulnar collateral ligament. Considerable offaxis moments were generated by each muscle tested. Through the range of elbow flexion, the varus moment was the major component of the multiaxis action of the flexor carpi ulnaris (p < .001). The flexor carpi radialis and pronator teres had significant actions as elbow flexors and pronators (p < or = .032); these muscles also had a significant varus contribution at 90 degrees elbow flexion (p < or = .019). The results suggest that the flexor-pronator muscle group plays an important role in valgus stability of the elbow. In particular, the flexor carpi ulnaris creates a significant varus moment, which is important in unloading and protecting the ulnar collateral ligament. Rehabilitation and strengthening of the flexor-pronator muscle group may help prevent failure of the ulnar collateral ligament and may also help compensate for a medially insufficient elbow.

We report on a soft x-ray microscope using a gas-discharge plasma with pseudo spark-like electrode geometry as a light source. The source produces a radiant intensity of 4 x 10(13) photons/(sr pulse) for the 2.88 nm emission line of helium-like nitrogen. At a demonstrated 1 kHz repetition rate a brilliance of 4.3 x 10(9) photons/(microm2 sr s) is obtained for the 2.88 nm line. Ray-tracing simulations show that, employing an adequate grazing incidence collector, a photon flux of 1 x 10(7) photons/(microm2 s) can be achieved with the current source. The applicability of the presented pinch plasma concept to soft x-ray microscopy is demonstrated in a proof-of-principle experiment.

We present an algorithm to reconstruct helical cone beam computed tomography (CT) data acquired at variable pitch. The algorithm extracts a halfscan segment of projections using an extended version of the advanced single slice rebinning (ASSR) algorithm. ASSR rebins constant pitch cone beam data to fan beam projections that approximately lie on a plane that is tilted to optimally fit the source helix. For variable pitch, the error between the tilted plane chosen by ASSR and the source helix increases, resulting in increased image artifacts. To reduce the artifacts, we choose a reconstruction plane, which is tilted and shifted relative to the source trajectory. We then correct rebinned fan beam data using John's equation to virtually move the source into the tilted and shifted reconstruction plane. Results obtained from simulated phantom images and scanner images demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm.

Study of individual elbow muscles' mechanical actions is important in understanding the muscles' fundamental roles in performing various motor tasks. It also helps us gain insights into the compensatory mechanisms for elbow injuries like the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury, which is a common sports-related injury. The mechanical actions of individual elbow muscles and their roles in loading/unloading the UCL were studied through in vivo experiments.

The effectiveness of a steam pasteurization process for reducing naturally occurring bacterial populations on freshly slaughtered beef sides was evaluated in a large commercial facility. Over a period of 10 days, 140 randomly chosen beef sides were microbiologically analyzed. Each side was sampled immediately before, immediately after, and 24 h after steam pasteurization treatment. Total aerobic bacteria (APC), Escherichia coli (generic), coliform, and Enterobacteriaceae populations were enumerated. The process significantly (P ≤ 0.01) reduced mean APCs from 2.19 log CFU/cm2 before treatment to 0.84 log CFU/cm2 immediately after and 0.94 log CFU/cm2 24 h after treatment. Before pasteurization (8 s steam exposure), 16.4% of carcasses were positive for generic E. coli (level of 0.60 to 1.53 log CFU/cm2), 37.9% were positive for coliforms (level of 0.60 to 2.26 log CFU/cm2), and 46.4% were positive for Enterobacteriaceae (level of 0.60 to 2.25 log CFU/cm2). After pasteurization, 0% of carcasses were positive for E. coli , 1.4% were positive for coliforms (level of 0.60 to 1.53 log CFU/cm2), and 2.9% were positive for Enterobacteriaceae (level of 0.60 to 1.99 log CFU/cm2). Of the 140 carcasses evaluated, one carcass was positive for Salmonella spp. before treatment (0.7% incidence rate); all carcasses were negative after steam treatment. This study indicates that steam pasteurization is very effective in a commercial setting for reducing overall bacterial populations on freshly slaughtered beef carcasses. The system may effectively serve as an important critical control point for HACCP systems at the slaughter phase of beef processing. In conjunction with other antimicrobial interventions (mandated by USDA to achieve zero tolerance standards for visible contamination) and good manufacturing practices, this process can play an important role in reducing the risk of pathogenic bacteria in raw meat and meat products.

The effectiveness of a recently invented "steam pasteurization" (S) process in reducing pathogenic bacterial populations on surfaces of freshly slaughtered beef was determined and compared with that of other standard commercial methods including knife trimming (T), water washing (35°C; W), hot water/steam vacuum spot cleaning (V), and spraying with 2% vol/vol lactic acid (54°C, pH 2.25; L). These decontamination treatments were tested individually and in combinations. Cutaneus trunci muscles from freshly slaughtered steers were inoculated with feces containing Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, Escherichia coli OI57:H7, and Salmonella typhimurium over a predesignated meat surface area, resulting in initial populations of ca. 5 log CFU/cm2 of each pathogen. Tissue samples were excised from each portion before and after decontamination treatments, and mean population reductions were determined. Treatment combinations evaluated were the following (treatment designations within the abbreviations indicate the order of application): TW, TWS, WS, VW, VWS, TWLS, and VWLS. These combinations resulted in reductions ranging from 3.5 to 5.3 log CFU/cm2 in all three pathogen populations. The TW, TWS, WS, TWLS, and VWLS combinations were equally effective (P > 0.05), resulting in reductions ranging from 4.2 to 5.3 log CFU/cm2. When used individually, T, V, and S resulted in pathogen reductions ranging from 2.5 to 3.7 log CFU/cm2 Steam pasteurization consistently provided numerically greater pathogen reductions than T or V. Treatments T, V, and S were all more effective than W (which gave a reduction on the order of 1.0 log CFU/cm2). Steam pasteurization is an effective method for reducing pathogenic bacterial populations on surfaces of freshly slaughtered beef, with multiple decontamination procedures providing greatest overall reductions.
